Wii U Satisfaction Thread

So my Wii U is coming later today. I have to leave for some time in the afternoon, though.

Is it okay to leave my Wii U on for a couple of hours while it's updating, or do I have to watch it at times to press a button or do something to it during this process? I want to play right when I get back, so it would be great if it's all done updating then. I'm also assuming it's initially on firmware 1.0 or something.
You can run the update unattended. It won't go all the way through, so it'll greet you with an error message when you come back, because the GamePad goes into low power mode after a while and the system won't update the GamePad firmware in that state. Simply restart the system and the update will resume.

I knew something will happen --good thing I asked, haha.

Is there a way to prevent the GamePad from going to power-saving mode by leaving it charging and plugged in? And did you mean it will update the Wii U but not the GamePad?

How is Hulu Plus on the Wii U? I'm thinking about subbing and if I did it would be to watch with the Wii U. I searched on youtube for a walk through of the app but no such luck. Does the app work well?

Two small comments. First, the Wii to Wii U transfer states a minimum of 512 MB of free space on your SD card is required... Not a strict requirement apparently as my 256 MB card worked just fine. Second, I cannot get over the smooth edges on the Wii You game discs. So awesome.

You know, I never used a screen protector with my DS Lite and never had any issues. Anyone think it is necessary for the GamePad? I am not sure it is really needed... But, has anyone here found a good/worth the price screen protector that they'd recommend?

Anyone who hasn't touched a Wii U disc has yet to feel the future.

Why not just.....keep the Gamepad charged? Leave it in it's charge stand or plug it in?

I'm so pumped for the VC release of Super Metroid...must be 15 years since my last playthrough. What day is it? I guess it isn't tomorrow, that would be too easy.

Maybe you have to take it off your touch screen panel before switching for it to work. But you definitely can switch it to a button.

It does work, thankyou!

Now that I can play with camera lock on my gamepad, Monster Hunter is going to get a hammering.

Can't understand why people are derisive of the gamepad. Imo it's the best thing about the system. I rarely ever use the tv anymore. Perhaps the screen could be a touch bigger, but I guess that would involve other issues, but otherwise it's fantastic.

Just bought Monster Hunter. Hopefully my Wii U purchase will feel a little more warranted when I start to play.

If you feel the need to take a break then do so. The game while satisfying after a big fight it is extremely repetitive. Personally can't play without something playing on my PC nearby because the game world is for the lack of a better word lifeless even though there are creatures roaming around. The solitude gets to me at times. I guess I wish more things didn't simply react to you. It does make me question if I want to even keep the game. I knew going into it though that doing all of this again might be a chore.

I was able to update my Wii U from 1.0 to 3.0 after around 1.75 hours. During this a lot of errors came up, it restarted a lot without telling me it needs to restart --only said error has occurred and needs to restart.

this is normal right?

I got one of those errors going from 1.0 to 3.0 in the roughly 2 hours it took for my updating to complete. Seems normal to me.

Yeah, it's a big tug of war between "don't make the screen too small!" and "don't make the controller too big!". Messing up with the latter can really kill sales. Raise your hand if you have a GameCube Keyboard Controller.

Incidentally, while I normally play exclusively in off-tv mode with most games, I've found that Arkham City seems really clumsy and annoying to play when I try to play it without having the extra map data and controls on a second screen.

Most never really tried it. I had two random people visiting latelay, one a gamer, the other wasn't except for a few xbox games.
Both were mocking the pad for an hour upon entering my appartment. "So it's just a handheld. So you have a sceen there, so what?" etc.
Then they tried it. Nothing but praise came out of their mouth the rest of the time.

In my experience non gamers can't even begin to imagine what having two screens is for. I mean, they don't even think about it for more than two seconds. They just seem to think you'll always see the same thing on the pad and the TV. A few people were even surprised that you could just play on the pad, that didn't cross their minds.
And let's not even talk about the "one gamepad, 4 wiimotes multiplayer" thing.

It's amazing how people have no clue about the thing. It reminded me a lot of the wiimote reveal "so it's a remote? LOL", except this time that feeling persisted.

Yup... people have no clue about the gamepad. That screen makes for such a great time in local multiplayer. If people still haven't gotten the new Rayman Legends demo, please do. It really shows the power and fun of having different experiences while playing the same game!

Just sell the console without formating it. They'll stay there.

They can also just redownload them as it sticks to console, just remove your cc info if you have any and nintendo club I guess. I guess a format removes everything except nintendo club account I believe.

won't my Nintendo account still be on the system? I know there's no true Nintendo account, but really, I can do this?

You could delete your user profile to be sure, but the console requires at least one at all times. I guess you could create aother random profile and delete your current one, and your credit card info on the eshop.
The new owner will probably create his profile and account anyway.

the games will stay on the menu either way.
Probably the only avantage of games tied to the console. I got Trine 2 that way.

I've been moderately happy with my Wii U since picking it up... I just really wish there was more to do on it.

I knew going in that it was poised to stumble out of the gates with a launch lineup mostly consisting of games I'd already played to death on other consoles, and a lot of ho-hum titles... but I had played Mario and Rayman at the Wii U Experience event in Chicago, and loved them both, so I took the plunge. If I'd have known what was going to happen to poor Rayman, though...

That said, my time with New Super Mario Bros U was just magical - the game doesn't do anything "new" in terms of the Mario formula, but it didn't need to. Just being a modernized take on Super Mario World was enough for me... the game made me happy and made me feel like I was 12 again, and really made the whole purchase worth it for me. As someone that's grown tired of a lot of what the industry's been pumping out, that nostalgic feel with the visual polish of that game was just what I needed to be interested in gaming again.

NintendoLand is a lot of fun, but as a guy that plays mostly singleplayer locally (for some reason all my friends live an hour away, so meetups are bi-weekly at best), it doesn't have a ton of meat on its bones. When it's fun though.... oh is it ever fun!

ZombiU is a bit clunky, but I find it a lot of fun... it looks decent enough and has a lot of great ideas. There's enough there for me to recommend people play it, but sometimes the controls and the "feel" of the game frustrate me. A little more polish on that one and it could've moved some systems.

Other than those three games though... Nothing's really grabbed me. Until the update hit it'd literally been months since I turned it on. I'm chomping at the bit for something new to play, and no one's delivering anything anytime soon. That disappoints me.

I need to make a couple of eShop purchases, like the Nano Assault game which I hear is really fun, and now that the 3DS version of Monster Hunter has me bitten with the Monster Hunting bug again, I need to get that game too (I was going to pass since I invested hundreds of hours in the Wii one only to be left with no way to import my character or even move my save off of the old Wii).

Would I recommend a Wii U to someone that doesn't have one yet? Back in December I would have, but right now I don't think I would unless they really like Mario. The latter half of this year needs to produce some gems for sure. The technology is actually really cool and I love the gamepad a lot more than I expected to. I just, you know, need some games to play!

Nano assault is good but it's best played co-op, so if you're mostly solo....try Toki Tori 2, it's a really good signle player experience if you like to think a bit. Miiverse is really helpful when you're stuck.

Been playing my U a ton thanks to MH3U and now Rayman.

I'd like to try and fill up my friends list with some folk, my NNID is TheLastCandle. Not sure if this is the thread for that but I'm sick of having an empty list. :/

Is there a Google Doc or something where GAF members share their NNIDs?

My NNID is BladeofAura.
I can't play Wii U until Friday, but I hope to add some of you by that time.

Had the Wii U for a couple of days now - a surprise gift from my wife, though I personally suspect she was bored herself and wanted something to play. Only have NintendoLand at the moment, but we've enjoyed it. She espwcially seems to like games in which I'm chasing her around, with Animal Crossing's game getting the majority of the playtime.

So far, I'm fairly impressed, though the system loads slow as hell. Any must-have digital-only titles on the system?

Tried out the Gamepad a few times. I admit it's cool but I wasn't a fan of how it felt. However, some more powerful first party titles and online support might sway me though.

Nano assault Neo(though hard to get into for the wife maybe :p) and Toki Tori 2. Otherwise Runner 2 if you like things like that but it's also available elsewhere.
And of course the free Rayman Challenge (must have x 10)

Edit : added both of you

Thanks for the recommendation - and yes, I would prefer titles that my wife could enjoy too. She loved the ArtStyle games on the Wii if that helps narrow down her interests.

One thing about the Wii U: The Gamepad is amazing. Comfy to hold. Easy to use. Anyone hating on the thing is certifiable.

OK thanks. I found it odd it's not in the OP though.

Haha thanks! I'm pretty sure I found it on Pixiv, but I wasn't able to find it again.
What's cool though is I recently bought the Pikachu 3DS XL, so it makes sense now.

Is it just my GamePad or is the left side a bit more "bumpy" than the right? I mean the transition from the top casing to the bottom casing on the sides. The right side was "smoother," and more comfortable than the left. Is this normal?

This is probably just a placebo thing, but Monster Hunter feels smoother (especially in the Great Jaggy area).

Before the upgrade i don't remember it going 60fps .. its weird!

I don't know if it's normal, but it is probably no big deal. Your probably over analyzing it, which I tend to do as well :)

Definitely give the Rayman Challenge App a try. Your wife will probably like it and co op is amazing. New levels everyday. If you don't like scoring the app comes with three regular levels anyway.

Toki Tori 2 would be a good thing if you like to think together or something.

I always forget Trine 2, it's stunningly beautiful and has co op, and also a bit of puzzle thinking. It's on sale for cheap too at the moment.

Nothing else really for now.

Have you updated it to the latest version yet?

I'm having a problem with the eShop, I bought a game on it the other night and downloaded it fine. However I never got an email receipt and none of my credit cards were charged after 2 days..

Tried the Monster Hunter demo the other night. First time I've ever touched the series. Probably a personal perspective thing, but is every weapon meant to be unappealing relative to the Sword & Shield, or should I just buy the game and run with a Sword & Shield, having found my personal favorite on the first go?

I like how quick it is. Couldn't get into the slower weapons, but then I've always prioritized movement over power in games.
