Microsoft: Next Xbox will work even when your Internet doesn’t

Oooh, gotcha gotcha. It sounded like you were just jumping out. That's probably smarter than my pattern of purchases, lol

Last year and the years prior, I would just buy everything and then sell or trade it. With Amazon's incentives, I would often buy a 60 dollar game, Amazon would give me a 20 dollar off code for my next game purchase, I'd beat the game and then sell it on Amazon for 45-50 dollars used. They've since stopped almost all the really good pre-order deals, so I can't really justify the cost anymore. Mainly because I know I wont own the console that game is played on in less than a year. Redbox though has been a god-send. And it's free because I abuse...I mean use...the Bing Rewards program.

Xbox GAF seems to have a persecution complex right now. Did you guys consider the the fact that Durango threads have been negative because most of rumors were negative?

Edit: you will see a major change in perceptions towards Durango if Microsoft does well on the 21st.

I don't know that you fall into this category, but there seems to be an irrational persecution complex among Sony enthusiasts on Gaf, and there are a lot of them, and it universally takes the form of lashing out at other gaming products in a way we don't necessarily see as boldly and commonly with enthusiasts of the other companies. Yes, this is a generalization, but I can't see it being unfair, based on my own observations.
Oh how I loathe this pseudo-psychology bullshit.

You think there is a significant difference between the 80 million that bought a PS3 and the 80 million that bought a 360?

Or is it just that some of those 80 million that bought the PS3 are expressing said traits?

What makes them different? Is it the distribution of geographic locations between the two groups? Is it the socio-economic status?

It's all ridiculous bullshit, that's what it is.

There is no psychological difference between the Sony MS or Nintendo enthusiasts on GAF. The only difference what form of arguments are being made and how many there are of said group, which alters the statistical mean craziness. ;-)

You're disregarding widely regarded observations by claiming, on a fundamental level, that those observations are impossible, based on psychology. Particularly when we have clear examples of this distinct behavior from today, when the community of players who had been reveling in the rumor that there was something bad about an incoming Microsoft game system, but who were taken aback and strictly unwilling to accept a more substantiated rumor to the contrary.

"Oh how I loathe this pseudo-psychology bullshit."

And to clarify, this isn't a indictment of Sony fans in general. I fall into that category myself. This is calling out particular behavior which is disruptive and frustrating to outsiders, and which frankly reflects poorly on those of us who enjoy this platform as well. Immature, emotionally invested enthusiasts in general behave this way. This generation has been rough times for Sony fans in that category, which is why we see such a hornet's nest of shit behavior coming from that direction.

How do you control for the various variables that are being controlled for in every psychology study that isn't rejected by C-tier magazine?

Also for everyone that was unwilling to accept this rumor as being true, I can find someone that defended the previous rumors in the face of overwhelming rumors to the contrary.

But go ahead and make your case.

Some posters are shitposters. Call them out and bring the attention to the moderating staff. I've done it and they've been dealt with, so it's not a losing proposition.

It has nothing to do with Sony vs. MS vs. Nintendo fanboydom. They make the forum worse for everyone and it's in everyone's interest to see them stop making such post.

Kinda related:

Like Adobe, we think subscription software-as-a-service is the future. The benefits to consumers are huge. Subscribers are always up-to-date. They get the latest and most complete applications. They can use subscriptions across the multitude of devices people use today. Web services like SkyDrive and applications like Skype are also more easily integrated with subscription services, like the new Office 365 Home Premium.

However, unlike Adobe, we think people's shift from packaged software to subscription services will take time. Within a decade, we think everyone will choose to subscribe because the benefits are undeniable. In the meantime, we are committed to offering choice--premier software sold as a package and powerful services sold as a subscription.

Chill dude, I was just busting your balls. I tend to agree with you, but I do believe that having BC encourages people to purchase past titles on a console they might otherwise not have bought. It's a relatively small niche though.

Plus BC is pretty important in maintaining consumer confidence and faith in digital marketplaces.

You say this now, but you also were saying that the Xbox shouldn't have BC because 360's exclusives were dead. Which makes absolutely no sense.

I'd much prefer it in the PS4 in all honesty. The 360 is pretty much dead with regards to exclusives whereas the PS3 is still going strong and likely to be for some time to come.

They don't necessarily contradict. I'd like BC in both, but if only one could have BC, I'd prefer it to be the PS4 for the simple fact that the PS3 is still receiving some pretty great games and will likely continue to do so for some time yet, whereas the 360 essentially winded down earlier this year outside of a few Live Arcade titles.

My belief that BC is important for maintaining consumer confidence in digital marketplaces is just that, some won't care that they've lost their games, etc once they move across, but I feel a percentage will feel hard done by and won't be as inclined to invest in either digital marketplace next generation.

For me at least, the library of digital titles is much more important than retail games. It's such a huge backlog of not only purchases, but potential purchases I would make if I suddenly had an open spot to play them. I understand that the technological challenge is no different between a game on a disc and a digital-only title, but it's unfortunate if both platforms are required to drop that backlog of content.

So your basically saying that because of a couple of games that are releasing on the PS3 literally within a month of the launch of the Next Box and PS4 that the PS4 deserves BC more.

First, I think it's extremely shortsighted to belive that BC has anything to do with the ol' exclusives argument. But, I won't knock your opinion as this may be the only games you care about.

I think people underestimate how huge BC will be if MS pulled it off.

First, the obvious is that milions and millions of core gamers frequent Live for more that a couple of exclusives. Even beyond the launch of Next gen gamers on Live are still going to be playing the last 4 Call of Duty games, Halo 4, Minecraft, Halo Reach, Battlefield 3, Gears of War: J and Gears of War 3, Fifa, 13 NBA 2K13 etc.

Believe me this is not going to stop even after the Next gen systems launch or because another console releases a couple of new games.

Secondly, it's going to be absolutely priceless for MS if gamers like me that have a ridiculously huge retail and XBLA collection of games to simply can move over to the Nextbox upload my account and games like we are all normally used to doing when we move on to a new Xbox.

Again, last gen it was only Halo 2 that us original launch 360 gamers layed with the OG Xbox friends. This time it's an entire generation of games both retail and XBLA.

Plus you have a slew of games coming for the 360 as well, that need to be playable on the Next Xbox.

I know I'm still going to want to play State of Decay, Lococycle, and Ascend: New Gods on my next gen Xbox.

I know if I buy Saint's Row IV, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, South Park: Stick of Truth, Lost Planet 3, Remember Me, Fuse, etc. I'm still going to want the option to play those as well.

Now Sony doesn't go that route that's cool for them, but if I could get BC and MS also announced that most games would get a facelift (like the 360 gave old Xbox games), then even Pachter would be a dumb sh1t not to take that offer.

If there are concerns about BC, always go with the PC version and enjoy living headache-free.

I must admit that i have only been a member for a few months and i have already noticed that the forum on a whole seems to be very pro Sony and anti Microsoft, even when Microsoft have some good news, people seem to try to twist it into a negative, you don't get that with Sony from what i have seen.

I've been here from a good amount of years (a lot of them only reading) and sometimes people seems very pro Sony, sometimes very pro Microsoft (for example, the start of the generation) and sometimes very pro Nintendo.

Maybe if now you have the impression that GAF is very anti-Microsoft is not because a great conspiration... is because the last years Microsoft has been doing a lot of things to piss off most of their hardcore userbase, that is most of GAF.

The MS of the last 2-3 years and the MS of the first 2-3 years of the generation are 2 very different companies.

No, that would really be too simple. It's a Sony conspiracy, they told you.

Why would any 360 gamer who has a huge collection of retail games and XBLA games much of which is played over Live whith their friends list go to PC for Backwards compatability?

I get that Steam has mass amount of games but they don't have anywhere close to all of the biggest games on the 360. At the end of the day, if you buy your multi-plats for one console over the other, because of friends lists, achievments etc. your definately not going to go to PC either.

Lol. If you frequent GAF, you soon realize that it's largely not 'their' hardcore userbase that's are the ones who are 'pissed' the most in Xbox articles.

So wait... Microsoft sends an internal e-mail to...People working on the new Xbox...

To tell them that it works without a connection...

Shouldn't they know this if they've been working on the damn thing?

What the heck is this?

My thoughts exactly. This is too weird, and frankly, that email reads like it was written by a 14-year-old. Grammar mistakes abound, and yeah--what kind of internal memo explains such a basic hardware feature to employees working on the system, 20 days before it's revealed to the world?

Not saying one side, or the other, is fake. Just that this email is.

Obviously, when there are bad news for MS, there are some Sony fans that also enter on these threads, in the same way as when there are bad news for Sony, there are some MS fans that also enter on these threads.

But the existance of these threads are because those companies fail to fulfill the expectatives of the most hardcore fans.

We had a lot of threads of PS3 exclusives lost and crappy ports on the first years of the generation, and in the last years we had threads of MS focusing too much on Kinect and providing much less exclusives than the competence. Is not that GAF is Sony-based, is that MS, lately, lost the momentum that they got at the start of the generation and Sony did a couple of good moves to get that momentum.

Thread is getting shitty now. Let's try to get away from that.

So do you guys think we'll see Rare's project(s) at the event or at E3? I know we're going to see CoD: Ghosts, but I would expect Microsoft to show off at least one or two of their biggest exclusives to entice people and get them excited for the E3 full-reveal of the game line-up.

I think there's a 100% chance of that happening. Rare played a huge role in getting Kinect rolling and into homes with its Kinect Sports series. I fully expect more casual-type games because of that factor.

Awesome. Now just announce that Kinect 2.0 works in smaller rooms (assuming it's required to use the new Xbox) and I'm definitely on board.

I mean look at your examples. Why would a hardcore 360 gamer be pissed at Sony losing exclusive to the 360?

As a hardcore gamer I can easily show that Kinect didn't prevent any hardcore exclusives from releasing in any of it's 2 short years on the market. I can also point to Sony and the PS3 who released Move and the same exact amount of games for the PS3.

What imaginary momentum did MS lose? I look on the sales charts and the 360 is still as successful as it ever was. I look on the forums and I see fans of said consoles doing what they always do. I see the media like Kotaku doing what they always do. I see the biased bloggers doing what they always do.

And at the end of the day, when you log off nothing has happened. MS will promote their system just like Sony and it's going to be interesting when they speak for themselves.

All businesses like money that is how they continue to exist.

Well, in my case, I'm building a PC over the Summer so those gmaes you list will be bought and played on PC.

In that sense, to me, BC is more valuable on the PS4. BC across both would indeed be great, but with their not being any great must have 360 games to play outside of State of Decay, BC on the Durango, while nice, would be a little wasted on me.

Great, now you'll make them cry. Shame on you, sir.

Don't you mean in your own opinion?

Also this is why it's a great idea to make BC a optional add-on instead of forcing it on everyone.

I really hope the next Xbox has BC. I already got Gears Justice, BattleBlock Theater and Moto Cross Madness this year. I also plan to buy Ascend New Gods, State of Decay, Crimson Dragon and Super Time Force. Moreover, I keep on putting time in Halo 4 and Happy Wars. That's 10 games I cannot play anywhere else, and I won't have had enough of them by the time next gen arrives.

CD has to be a next gen title at this point. I thought the leaked demo suggested it would be current gen, but with the complete lack of info, videos, etc, I'm starting to think they are reworking it for next gen/Kinect 2.0.

"Internet required? No, what? It'll still work without an ethernet cable plugged in, silly.. For it to work you need a power cable and you might want to plug in that HDMI! And when you're all set you should sign in to Xbox live and play all of our third party games! An internet connection is required for that feature of the box to be available."

That'd be funny.

I 100% agree for the types of gamers in YOUR case that makes sense. BC for you is only worth it if a few games are coming within a couple of months and during the next gen launch.

I'm speaking from the perspective of the millions of hardcore 360 gamers that actually have a collection of Retail 360 games and XBLA that the play and frequent Xbox Live with their friends lists and play 360 gamers daily.

That why I know BC would be HUGE for MS if they pull it off, especially if it's native right out of the Next box. They pull it off and it will be a big reason they easily secure their hardcore fan base.

To be fair, State of Decay is also on PC, and BattleBlock Theater and Super T.I.M.E. Force are unlikely to stay exclusive to Xbox, but I agree. However, it's his opinion.

In my case, both would be welcome, Xbox 360 BC because I still have close to a hundred games I haven't played yet, and PS3 BC because then I wouldn't have to buy one.

I'd love if Crimson Dragon was reworked for next gen.

Me, too. And there's a good chance for it, I think, going by the statements some Grounding Inc. folks have made not so long ago.

I meant with buying new games, yo. If it's like "woah, hey, that game might not be worth picking up on a console that's going to be replaced soon," then... yeah, buy on the platform where it won't?

You can buy them for whatever platform you want. I'm just saying that if your playing games on your preferred console and you could stay in that ecosystem next gen then that's a great incentive to upgrade to that next gen system.

If not your just going your likely going to still keep buying those games on your preferred system and you may or may not upgrade to next gen immediately.

I get multi-plats are on PC, but this isn't part of the BC convo if your not a PC gamer.

That'd be funny.

Even funnier is not realizing that the only other option is rebuying and streaming games through a cloud system that has to always be online as well.

It'd be huge for me because of my large XBLA library which I regularly revisit. Those games tend to be somewhat more evergreen than retail games, as such BC would really be a massive benefit. But every single time I say this, I get shot down with 'just keep your 360'. As if there's not some obvious massive convenience in not having to keep my 360 connected to my TV.

I'm with 100% with you. I bought my 360 at launch and have amassed a ridiculous amount of games that it doesn't make sense. But, just like you I have games that I love from XBLA that I play when I'm simply in the mood. It's the same for retail, if I feel like jumping back to a title to play with a bunch of friends I do it.

The other unsung here is achievements. There are games I plan on coming back to for fun, but I know I'll get achievements out of them as well.

Not to mention all those games I've always wanted to play, but haven't purchased yet.

You got millions and millions of 360 gamers that aren't going to got Next gen at first. They will wait a year or two to jump in. You also have Next gen gamers who KEPT their Xbox the first year or two.

In both cases, you now have the rumored Xbox mini that is 10 to 20 dollars less than it was at the Nextbox launch. But, it's still worth it for those gamers who want to keep their retail and XBLA collection.

Backwards Compat. MS. Do It!

I'd love if Crimson Dragon was reworked for next gen.

Ditto
