EA Sports Engineer: Wii U is crap, < powerful than 360. No $ 3party. [Tweets Deleted]

The market collapses because there's not enough people to buy your high-budgeted games. The business model is unsustainable. The crash will happen for different reasons than 1983.

of course the business model is sustainable. the only change will be on the number of high-budget games.

look at Activision, focusing on 4 or 5 AAA IPs, that's the way forward. you'll see the death of indies and iOs well before another home console crash.

I've heard Smash Bros. be referred to as a "Party game" before, usually to question it's merits as a "legitimate" fighting game. I believe it is also the best selling fighting game of all time too. I have also seen and been to parties where they played Smash Bros. Sometimes WITH Wii Sports.

So I am confused as to what the distinction is between "Multiplayer" and "Party" is. Would not any 4-player game require, say, a "party" of 4 to play? Is it not a party game if they all have stern faces and repeated internet memes? If a little 7-year-old girl is present, does the substitute "party genre" apply?

The distinction, in my eyes, is that multiplayer games require a certain level of skill to play, as a group effectively. Party games do not.

I don't see death, but contraction of indies and iOS games in the near to semi-near future.

I only just woke up, how is this thread already 50 pages in the 12 hours or so this was originally posted? The guy's an idiot for being so blunt in his position on a public medium, but he didn't really say anything I don't think everybody already assumed about Nintendo and EA's current relationship or the overall lack of power of the Wii U.

Twitter really should be banned from the workspace though. Seems like it winds up with even more people inadvertently putting themselves in the red than facebook.

Well technically Smash can be considered all 3 depending on what situation it is played in. It's up to the different player groupsets that make it what it is. Whether it's simply casual or competitive play.

Why are people so happy when a big company in the industry is having touble, be it Nintendo, Sony, MS, Square, etc?

It only means less games, less jobs, less ideas, less competition, less variety...

Every one loses, really.

Nintendo need to be taken down a notch, let's see what happened since wii released:
-'sorry core gamers you are no longer the target audience'
-'we priced the 3ds at 350 euros because we think people will pay the premium'
Add to that 3 years of ear grating 'casual is the future time to move on from core gaming' coming from the rest of the industry as they chanted 'ME TOO, ME TOO'

And wii spawned that shitty kinect, stick waggle and even caused sony to give eye toy a second spin. Suddenly the idea arose that games need to be for EVERYONE and that the word niche is a dirty word.

So much damage caused, based on greed by the industry and an arrogant, cynical nintendo.

Having learned what a fad is and how fickle the casual gamer is (they moved on a long time ago) they'll hopefully learn not to take their original audience for granted.
Only good can come from this for gamers.

Add to that the 30 fps games, hardlocks, slow OS , scaling, screentearing and other garbage that wipes its ass with the concept of 'nintendo seal of quality' , that needed some consequences too.
Before the wii U launched I thought nintendo was above that. Wii may have been a shitty gamecube 1.5 but at least it had a lot of 60 fps games and didn't rely on patches to fix broken half finished releases like ps3/xbox360 do.

Hopefully nintendo will try harder next time and re learn the concepts of brand name, consumer loyalty and value and just focus on making good games for an audience that will actually stick around instead of a quick cash grab by producing junk for the fickle non gamer.

(I can't wait for the vile replies to my opinion)

Oh wow. You have absolutely no clue about anything if you agree with this.

First of all, Nintendo is actually making good long term business in game industry unlike basically everyone else. We are heading into a video game crash and it's not going to be pretty.

Second of all, if 3rd parties say they can't compete with Nintendo games, how could they compete with Nintendo if they went 3rd party?

Third of all, Nintendo wouldn't be Nintendo if they started whoring out their best IPs on other platforms.

So no, just no.

Good long term business sense during a video game crash. Right. Didn't know it made sense to release 5 year old technology during a technological bubble, in which all products seemingly push boundaries. One in which it is increasingly important for a product to stand out from the random masses of shovelware products. There's a reason firms use their cash for investment and market edge. They don't want to be left behind, and lose their brand value. Nintendo is in that hole now unable to adapt, and it boggles me how Iwata has not been fired yet.

And no, the new consoles aren't going to fail, unless they are totally unimaginative like WiiU. So far, it does not seem so.

You would think people would think twice before posting something so controversial about their company.

Oh boy, you're gonna get it.

I hope you can back all that up with peer reviewed, empirical evidence or you are going to get crucified.

So you believe consoles will be able to survive on 15 or so games per year? I disagree, I believe AAA console gaming is crashing, and new consoles won't save it.

I think Nintendo fans have taken too much today. Besides, a lot of what he said is pretty widely accepted already.

What is coming out from Nintendo for the WiiU in the next couple months?

In the next couple of months? We don't have release dates yet for everything. But here's what we know Nintendo is working on based on what they've announced:

Game and Wario
Pikmin 3
Wii Fit U
Wii Play U
New Super Luigi U
Yarn Yoshi
New Mario Kart
New 3D Mario
New Xenoblade
Zelda: Wind Waker HD
New Zelda

Add in Wonderful 101 and Bayonetta 2 as Nintendo-published titles that Platinum are developing.

Within the next three months? I'm not talking life of the system. I notice the distinct absence of a Metroid game in your optimistic list. That strikes a less than harmonious chord with me.

Metroid will be lucky to get another game by 2020 after Other M.

Within the next few months? Not many. Though E3 might have surprises althoiugh I suspect most of the stuff people care about will be in the Fall and onward.

Could be Retro's game.

Whatever their game is, it's BIG.

They don't talk about it even amongst the heavy hitters.

Making game engines for the Wii U if I remember correctly.

We'll find out someday...

But when will that be? :(

edit: If Nintendo was really smart, they would have Factor 5 working on the game engines and Retro making another Metroid.

Wow, devs taking jabs left and right at Nintendo...the day a Nintendo employee acts like this is the day they lose their job; no matter how 'right' their opinion is.
Nintendo needs all publishers. EA is one of the largest so this news should hurt Nintendo a bit, and be a warning sign for those who were thinking about buying the WiiU.
Not a warning sign for me really. I'll get a WiiU when it hits the price point I want ($250-$300 Premium bundle). Nintendo is announcing partnerships with companies regularly so they are still not in alert mode (to stop WiiU production). As long as their second wave games perform above expectations, they will be fine. The only sad part about this is that EA has the Star Wars IP...

This thread, is amazing.

Why won't Nintendo just rush titles out the door? Who cares about polish and quality control. They can always do patches and DLC later to complete the games because quite frankly, this drought is killing Nintendo.

Why would Nintendo be immune to a crash when they're crashing as we speak?

There is no Last of Us, Halo or any other big 1st party MS/Sony titles for the Wii/WiiU. Put Zelda, Metroid and Mario on the PS4 and people will buy it along with the best Sony has to offer.

If Nintendo loses it's identity, that because of Nintendo. The box their games are being played on makes no difference other than potential for a better game overall thanks to better tech.

Um, this is basically a horrible idea.

All Nintendo has GOT is their traditional quality. Releasing janky broken crap and then patching it 3 months later will do nothing to make people beat down doors to buy Wii U.

It's not really. All it's doing is killing the dreams of people who thought Nintendo could kill the giants a second time. Nintendo will be fine.

Because people will buy them, hate them, and it will dissuade them from buying more or others from buying the Wii U or it's games at all.

WHAT WE NEED IS A WONDERFUL 101 ESHOP DEMO

In all likelihood this statement holds more truth than any other in this thread. Nintendo isn't going to up and disappear even if the WiiU does. The true test will be what they do after the WiiU is dead and buried by 2016.

Nintendo will hopefully go back to what made it great originally. Cutting edge hardware with an enormous library of 1st and 3rd party games that appeal to everyone. They let Sony steal the crown from them in the 32 bit era, and Sony did it with a mix of great hardware and.....yep, you guessed it. A plethora of 1st and 3rd party games that had something for everyone.

But the PS1 could barely run SNES ports, dude. The Nintendo 64 cleaned its clock in every respect as far as power goes. Sony never had "cutting edge tech" until the PS3, man.
