Didn't Dreamcast also play audio CDs?

My memory is fuzzy on that.

And MP3 and VCD with third party software.

What does that have to do with PS2's DVD playing capabilities?

Read again:

"Pretty sure PS2 was the first "entertainment" console that did more than simply play videogames if we're going to argue it."

Dreamcast was the first "entertainment" console that did more than simply play vg.

what does all of this have to do with Microsoft's reveal at this point? *edit* not your post, Izick

Almost feels pointless to have a thread like this with STILL no verified official leaks or much in the way of hype-building coming from MS. They could at least throw us an upskirt shot of the tent. Or give us some hints. Throw us a bone

U.S.A. and the U.K. says NO!
The thing is while US and UK are one of the biggest markets of the VG industry they aren't the whole picture.

And to those that think Sony isn't a "threat" or competition to MS in the console buisness are kidding them selves, I know MS will expand the Xbox brand to more than just games but you have to realize the next Xbox will be perceived as a vg console first, and as most of us know the early adopters of this costly consoles are the core gamer and that's were both MS and Sony will focus.

Really? PSX played audio CD if you want to argue and VCD with third party software.

Sega CD also played audio CDs...how far back are we going?

I don't know much....but I know this. A console war is as good for this industry as war is (or was) for the US economy (historically anyways). It's in the best interest of everyone for both the PS4 and the new XBOX (Infinity, whatever) to be strong. If not, the future that faces gaming will be nothing like the present. So what I'm saying is, squeeze the consoles tight, they might be the last.

I'm drunk.....Is it Tuesday yet?

The best thing for Sony (and future sony users) is a Microsoft fighting with good software. And viceversa.

I just went to that website and they have two different tables showing the one you posted and then another posting them growing, so which is right? The one they dropped in or the one they grew in?

Post the other table and a link to the article it's in.

Uh not sure what Xband has to do with anything. We're talking about platforms that pushed more than simply playing videogames. You know as in watching movies, listening to music. Basically replacing devices in your living room. I'm pretty sure playing games online doesn't really qualify :P

I was joking. But I don't think PS2 was conceived as a "device for replace something", o if it was, Sony change some plans (for example, launching the PS2 with DVR capabilities).

And now there's naked b*tches everywhere!

@ Mik_Pad - Lets just hope MS isn't treating the video game market like the PC market. That wouldn't be a good look for Sony eh? Ejected from your own turf? Damn.
I certainly don't think it is impossible but highly unlikely to happen, what I think will happen is that MS will expand the XBOX brand and will have different "type" of Xbox devices solely because it doesn't make sense for everyone to have to pay for an all in one box and could be a great buisness strategy providing MS the oportunity to offer cheaper products and be more competitive in that aspect.

I don't know if this guy is legit (from B3D):

VMs? No direct access to hardware? WTF?

Might be more to do with xbla games. It makes sense to run these in a sandbox so when the following generation comes along the games will work straight up. I guess that's going to be a problem migrating from the 360 (unless Durango has a built in 360 chip (or some form of emulation).

It's sad because you are heavily invested in MS and perceive these "bad pieces of info" more than another person. I'm looking at the big picture. We have multiple rumors of Durango trying to be the central box in the living room with DVR and possibly teaming up with cable companies to provide a set-top box experience like Roku. Add that with the talks of integration with the Win 8 ecosystem and interconnectivity between different systems and functionality with Kinect and you can see where this is going. MS's ambition is a wider scope then just games right now. Of course they'll have games. They don't want to alienate their fanbase at the beginning of a new generation so they will give them games to placate the core while they work on what they plan to really do with Durango and that's control the living room. As for Sony, I haven't heard any rumors of Sony trying to replace your cable box have you?

There are no significant differences between Sony's and Microsoft's strategic goals, and that's the all-media domination. It's obvious from Sony's previous efforts (for instance, go watch the start of their E3 2005 conference again), and even more so from their answer to the recent call for spinning off the entertainment division (it's apparently of strategic importance to the whole company; it's not just about making money, it's about opening doors). They're just using different tactics at the moment because it became clear to them that they can use the gullible gamer population to their advantage and ride that wave until they're back on their feet again (the terribly pandering and opportunistic rallying speech by "Kevin Butler" in one of their recent conferences should've made that patently obvious even to those who couldn't see through their rather transparent intentions before that). Not that it's a bad thing - not at all, it's just business - and it certainly has a short term positive effect on gaming, but I think that we (as opposed to your average GameFAQs or GameTrailers forum user) shouldn't be as naive as to be obliviously herded like that; they're both going in the same direction even if they're currently traveling along the somewhat different paths.
