I just tried out a 30-day Lovefilm sub, so I'm planning on watching both mini-series and all 5 seasons within a month.

ADAMA IS GRIZZLED[/"spoiler] (without the ") when discussing the show.
Impressions

Mini-series

Jesus, they're not pulling any punches, them Cylons. I love how quick and intense the space battles are, with no fancy magical shields or laser beams - just missiles and ablative hull armor. I also love how they explain the relatively "old" looks of the mother ship itself, that it's because older technology makes them less vulnerable to Cylon attacks.

Holy shit this is brutal, that scene where they had to abandon 20 of the ships because they lacked FTL-drives was powerful. I love how swift the battles are, no random-ass dog fighting for ages like SW - you get in, you shoot, you either win or lose.

Damn, Cylons everywhere? I loved Adama's conversation with the refuel station Cylon-in-disguise. Gaius is starting to become my favorite character, what with his attempt of trying to deal with his guilt by helping the survivors. I can see all the little mysterious and questions the writers are setting up, and could see how the fan base got themselves into a speculation frenzy that lead to unrealistic expectations.

I love how they're really making it out as a struggle rather than a fight. They are out clasesd by machines more ruthless, more intelligent, and more numerous than humanity. The dog fight was just a run and gun operation, no time to make any fancy maneuvers - just cover space with as much pew pew as possible in hopes of hitting some of the ships.
Hah, and here I thought Gaius was just trying to cover up his track by sacrificing an innocent, but it looks like he really did humanity a massive favour :p

Season 1
  1. 33 -
Huh, so the pilot from the scout ship survived? And there's another Cylon clone of his GF? lol, I wonder what the Cylons plan with her is - are they going to try to set up a distress call and in that fashion find all of the surviving humans?
I'm not entirely sure what's going on with the Cylon-inside-Gaius-head, as she seems to be helping him, assuming she is just a chip in his brain. I do like the notion that she's just a figment of his imagination, created to cope with the guilt he's feeling (at least that explains why she is helping him).
  2. Water -
Oh man, I really feel it for poor Gaius. Love how realistic everything is, like Adama's little talk on why the military cannot function as a police force. That asian Cylon is going to be the death of them all. I like how she's trying to cope with what seems obviously clear, the way she's trying to rationalize away her suspicious behaviour.

That card game was awesome, I wanna play that card game.
  3. Bastille Day -
This episode was not as good as the previous, or next ones. The first weak point, probably because it focused so much on that Astro dude (I can't even remember his name).
  4. Act of Contrition/You can't go home again -
Pretty great 2-episode story arc, and it did kinda make me like whatever-her-name, though she's still not as interesting as some of the other characters. Neat to see the BSG in control of a Cylonship, but I get the feeling they're not going to get much use out of it.
  5. Litmus -
    This was excellent.
Loved the little witch hunt they had going on, and the dissolution of the relationship between two annoying characters. It makes you wonder how that damn mechanic can keep quiet about all this, especially now that he no longer has a relationship to think of. If he doesn't tell Adama in the next couple of episodes, I will not approve.
  6. Six degrees of separation -

    God damn.
That whole episode had me at the edge of my seat.
I have no clue as to whether the apparition in Gaius head is just a rationalization or something else, and am loving not knowing it. It does seem like this particular Cylon is at odds with the rest of Cylon...ity. If she is the apparition, then she has actively been helping humanity escape on more than one occasion, when she could have by withholding information easily have caused the destruction of the human race.
  7. Flesh and bone -
Lol, right, like Adama would be a Cylon.

    Or is he?

    Nah, I doubt it :p
Amazing episode, was interesting for them to kinda touch upon the philosophy of the Cylons. That dream sequence was also strange, but damn.
  8. Tigh me up, tigh me down -

Haha, oh god, you're so crazy Gaius.
This "Adama is a cylon" plot-line is so hilariously bad, the only substance to the rumour coming from a.... lying Cylon whose methods of sabotage relied on lies and fear :p

Yep, this is definitely a weak episode. I really don't care for the old drunken colonel.
  9. The hand of God -
  10. Colonial -
  11. Kobold's Last Gleaming: Part 1 -
  12. Kobold's Last Gleaming: Part 2 -
Season 2 - Part 1

  1. Scattered -
  2. Valley of darkness -
  3. Fragged -
  4. Resistance -
  5. The Farm -
  6. Home: Part 1 -
  7. Home: Part 2 -
Love this little mental break down Gaius went through this two-parter, definitely saw it coming. The boomer/chief encounter was awesome, I had been looking forward to it for ages.

I thought I was going to mind all this mythological stuff, but it's honestly been alright so far, because they've managed to squeeze in alternative, non-theist, explanations for most things (like Gaus just being straight-up mad, but he's still my fav :p).

I approve of robo-sharon, she's so much better than the previous schizo-sharon.

I do wonder where they're going with this Zodiak-based mythology, but at least they found earth. Kinda odd how they were teleported to earth (or I guess it was just an image/hologram) and then suddenly back aboard the ship.
  8. Final cut -
  9. Flight of the Phoenix -
  10. Pegasus -
Damn, damn, damn - she's the admiral?
There are going to be power struggles all throughout this episode, nice.

Okay, I would like to know how they managed to escape the Cylon virus considering that their ship looks super advanced. I would not at all be surprised by them being replaced entirely by Cylons, though that would be too obvious.

Though by the sounds of it, they might have defected from the fleet - escaped the battle, letting innocents die in the process.

Nope, she is totally going to interfere with the runnings of the Galactica.
"Minister of education?" Yep, she's going to ruin things.

Oh shit, they also got a Cylon source.
God damn, the admiral sounds stone cold. No way that was a joke.
    Hoh ho, CAG vs CAG!
I bet the prisoner is that reporter.
Love Adama's attitude to this all, bow to the Admiral.
I like how all the paper sheets have cut corners, but is there even a reason for it? :p
Yeah, there's totally something shady going on, this will all end badly.
Oh shit, they've cut off the arms of the cylon?
    And it's Gaius imaginary friend.
Oh okay, not her arms cut off.
There we go, of course the Admiral was going to divide and conquer. I love her actress, she manages to project power without all the gruff Adama use.
Damn, this new crew consists of a bunch of monsters.
Yeah, that particular scene was quite powerful.
Oh shit, this music is amazing. Adama to invade the Pegasus.

I'm totally expecting the second-in-command of Pegasus to shoot Commander Cain.
  11. Resurrection Ship: Part 1 -
That such a crazy intense face-off, and suddenly - number sixes everywhere. I guess each Cylon model have their own mothership that holds all their copies or something.

Love the two commanders and the president in the same room.

Damn, el presidente talking about killing Commander Cain.
I love how riskier everything has become the moment their fleet joined.

Okay, now I'm starting to wonder how many cylons in disguise there are over at the Pegasus.

Oh here we go, Gaius crazy time!

Looks like Pegasus killed all their civilians because they became a liability. Or some, or most of them.
I knew they were baby killers.

Yep, knew it would be a ship that held clone bodies.

    Holy shit, at this double-plotting.
  12. Resurrection Ship: Part 2 -
Finally, Gaius cried a little. I loved his little monologue with number six. Damn, he can act.
That was a beautiful space battle - I cannot believe this was a SyFy show
The way Adama/Cain squared off - jesus, that was so tense. I cannot believe no one died.
    Apollo's "death" scene was beautiful
The music was beautiful, harrowing even. All over the place, so many good pieces of music.
Gaius got himself his personal Cylon assassin now, looks like the baby prophesy will come true.
That Cain death was satisfying. That is all.
    Now kiss.
Still bothered by that that thing in the Pegasus episode.
They did touch upon the subject of rape in a rather careful manner fortunately, which gave it so much more impact as one reeled back in horror. I read that they in the extended episode actually had Helos and Chief interrupt a rape that was going on and I must say I'm glad they did not go with that version. After knowing what they had done to number Six, the death of Cain became incredibly satisfying.

Season 2 - Part 2
  1. Epiphanies -
Again, a slightly disturbing episode as they touched upon human nature - what it is, and who has it. Whether or not you truly could treat Cylons as nothing but mere machines. I was surprised to see Adama rather than Rosalina seeming hesitant at the notion of forcefully causing an abortion, didn't she have children?
Actually, never heard them mention it it, and maybe the notion of female rights doesn't exist in the future/BSG-universe. Either way, it was good to see Gaius finally mature up a bit, after that embarrassing episode with Six, and do a little bit of good.

Then the oh shit moment was President remembering seeing Gaius with a Cylon (do they know that model?).
  2. Black Market -
Fisk has settled into the role of commander pretty quickly, I wouldn't at all to see Gaius become his Rosalina (with the exception of "Kiss"). I have no idea what's going on with Apollo, why he's boning some chick with a daughter, or why he's been gone for so long. Oh, it was a prostitute, heh.

Aww, Fisk got killed. By the crime lord. That Apollo had his gun aimed at. Nice to see them kinda mention Pegasus-Galactis relationships.

Gaius manned up a bit, damn.

Dude, Apollo, don't shoot her down!
    Poor communication's officer :(

Oh here we go, President vs Vice president confrontation. Some more Gaius manning up, he's starting to act less like a neurotic wreck. Loving it.

Children in a cage, another episode making the argument for the Cylons by showing the just low humanity can lower itself. Damn, so many satisfying deaths. It was nice to see Apollo pull the trigger, and let the dark market's working continue because he understood the need for it.
  3. Scar -
  4. Sacrifice -
  5. The captain's hand -
  6. Downloaded -
  7. Lay Down Your Burdens: Part 1 -
  8. Lay Down Your Burdens: Part 2 -

Pew, pew, boom, boom!

There will probably be a bunch of people telling you that the last season is terrible just like every BSG lttp thread, but really, don't worry about it. The series is a great ride and you'll enjoy it a lot.

Early seasons are the best. You're in for a treat with episode 1 of the actual series. Won the Hugo for best dramatic episode that year. Just amazing.

Adama is grizzled but they dye his hair in the series. It always bothers me when they do this in TV shows.

BSG is one hell of a ride. Enjoy it man, but don't over think it.

No that's the second-to-last season that's terrible. The fucking boxing episode.

"Unfinished Business" is one of best examples of a relationship drama that I can think of in the last decade. Totally baffled by people who hate it. Then again, you can look at it this way: The show ends up being so layered that people can FERVENTLY appreciate it on levels that seem to have nothing to do, ultimately, with the main dramatic thrust.

Seriously, some of the best character work on TV. Ever. even when the plotting stumbles or outright breaks, the character work is rock solid.

I'd say "ignore people telling you to bail before the end" but if the miniseries has you THIS hooked, I'm willing to bet even if you wanted to bail near the close of the show, you couldn't. It's pretty compelling.

the problem is that the last season throws out any and all character development from the first 3

I'm not without flaws, and my time is limited.
Perhaps I'll check it out next summer, to see how it differs from the new series.

the 78 series is pretty much garbage. I'm not gonna say you SHOULDN'T watch it, but it is corny, cheesy, and shallow as any episode of Love Boat. Not even exaggerating.

the problem is that the last season throws out any and all character development from the first 3

Not even remotely. Character growth slows a HELL of a lot in those back ten of S4, but then again... it's the back ten of S4. I would completely disagree that the characters regress or break. They might plateau/flatten out, sure. But they stay on their arc's trajectories.

What I love about this show is the Characters. The acting propels the show forward. You can actually believe that these people have lost their entire civilization unlike the original series where it just never seemed to be thought about.

I think the grief this gets is due in most part to the long gaps in production. Fans sat back and wrote scenarios inside their own heads that they felt were better. Much like Lost. I think for someone watching it for the first time on a marathon it wont have that baggage.

Enjoy, I think I'll pop it myself.

My favorite part of the miniseries (putting this in spoilers since I forget which half it's in) is when
the ship carrying Roslin jumps away from the Cylon attack and you can hear audio of people in the other ships pleading with them not to leave. Just chilling.
.

Still at mini-series (part 2):

Holy shit this is brutal, that scene where they had to abandon 20 of the ships because they lacked FTL-drives was powerful. I love how swift the battles are, no random-ass dog fighting for ages like SW - you get in, you shoot, you either win or lose.

My body is shivering from this.

I just finished watching this, after marathoning the whole thing during my finals week. The stupidest thing to get addicted to because I couldn't fucking stop watching haha. Great show, I'll sub for your ride.

Awesome, that was the scene I was referencing. Really the miniseries was some amazing TV. Left me breathless and sort of brought back 9/11 for me - just seeing one thing happen after another and people not knowing what was going on.

Don't take the advice of making up your own ending. That's silly. The suspense will get to you. If you're really into it, you'll want to know the plot development and the ending and it'll be good to get that out of the way. I didn't hate the ending, but I would've hated not knowing it.

Be careful with potential spoilers:
In BSG's context, 'boxing' can refer to two very different things.
Forgot about that.

I wish I could talk like Adama.

The beginning of Season 3 is incredible.
So do I.

Yeah, unfortunately the middle third of 3 was pretty boring. Wasn't that during the writers' strike? Season 4 is without a doubt worth watching. The ending left me dissatisfied, but the season as a whole was good. I especially loved the
planetary mission
episodes. I also love the titles of the season 4 episodes.

Keep this thread updated with your view-through. :)

And it's good that you're seeing it through to the end. Ignore the posters that go "stop at ____ lol."

I thought the Baltar trial was pretty strong.
Season 2 and 3 were the strongest. I wasn't that into season 4. I felt like I was watching it so I could get to the end.

Also, just throwing my opinion into the ring: I loved the ending. Well, the very ending to the ending was stupid
(don't need a pinstriped Gaius in Manhattan scene, let me extrapolate the laid-out-on-a-platter thematic content of that scene from the whole damn arc of the show)
, but the overall way the series wrapped up was perfect imo.

I liked Lost too though, for what that says. To me, they're both shows where you don't need to neatly tie up every single thread - just leave me feeling like I have things to think about, and some great, well-explored characters along the way.

Jazzy spoiler that ^^

Season 1 did indeed start incredibly strongly with that episode and others. There's this great naturalistic vibe that feels unlike any other sci fi show before it. It's true that the show stumbles as it fully commits to its mythology in the last couple of seasons, but it's offset by the improved production values and action scenes and remains entertaining until the end.

I've just started the first season on Netflix. I'm about five episodes in and am really enjoying it. The only gripe I have is that I liked the Cylons from the original show better. I remember them looking so badass or maybe it's nostalgia clouding my memory.

Agree with those saying you should watch the end. You need to know what happened
so you can mock it/be annoyed like the rest of us
.

Also the OSTs for this show were fantastic. Definitely recommend you pick them up. So many favorites it's hard to pick. Had this on repeat for ages. Love that lyrics are from the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad.

Actually rewatching the series with my roommate, so interesting timing. Just finished the episode "33", the first one after the miniseries.

"33" was amazing. Don't think I've ever seen a TV episode then or since that has made me feel
actual dread/desperation
in the way that episode did.

I was about to watch "33" today, but I think I'll want to save that for tomorrow.

Mini-series - 10/10.
Seriously the best TV-show season I've ever seen.

Wow, what a coincidence! I just started watching this one week ago! Baltar steals the show for me.

I honestly thought it was going to be one of those overhyped shows that the net loves to champion but its really good. One of the few shows where I don't hate any of the characters
