The Last of Us Demo (GoW:A Exclusive) Discussion Thread

What a fantastic demo!!

I can definitely tell that it is going to be hard to take out the
runners
because of how they dodge, but taking out the
clickers
should be a bit easier, especially if you can acquire a silencer at some point in the game.

I doubt there will be silencers, but it would be neat to use junk to craft a one-shot suppressor with realistic sound (not that tiny pew we always hear)

Got done with the demo. It's every bit as amazing I expected.

Little quirks first. Joel climbs stairs in a funny way. It reminded me of that Matrix online mmo game and it's climbing animation for some reason lol. While on the subject of animations, I think I noticed
an animation glitch when Tess and Ellie run ahead and climb a broken road
. Gonna play that part again to see if it's just my imagination. But yeah, it's Uncharted engine no doubt. Also I always have the hardest time finding friendly NPC when they're talking or looking at something. I always miss it :(

The demo is a good appetizer for the full game. You get your exposure to crafting, combat, stealth and the infected. I had fun throwing bricks and bottles at them, but the problem is I was never able to hit them. It always landed somewhere else. Aiming your arc to land on an enemy is really difficult because your enemies are constantly moving, especially the Clickers. This is important because stunning your enemies is integral part of the game. Maybe I just suck at it and will get better with practice. Anyways when I got to the part with the enemies patrolling that area, I carefully took out the clicker. Threw a brick at him and as usual the brick landed somewhere else. It was startled, so I took that opportunity to run at him and surprise his shit. Took out a shiv to kill him. Took out another infected like that, but screwed up when trying to sneak around the three others. Had to use gun and a melee weapon to finish the job. The stealth looks deep and imaginative, thank God, and isn't a tacked-on element. Absolutely no complaints about the listen mode. I think it's a very natural element of the game and anyone with two functioning ears should be able to do with Joel does, maybe not as precise, but close enough.

All in all, I am very excite. Good job ND.

Hey Arne, will we ever get the chance to try out the human enemy AI prior to the release? This demo doesn't to make it possible to play the level in different ways. We pretty much have no choice in terms of how we approach a situation. I have to admit, was expecting to be able to try out human enemy AI, kinda disappointed. Also, way too short man! How come we get the shortest demo, even though we actually paid money to be able to access the demo? Not cool man :(

You can autoaim throw brick and bottles with R1. You don't have to arc aim. They have to get close to you though.

Just finished the demo.

This game is so good man. Naughty Dogs just reached some Nintendo tier shit with this. The music, the atmosphere, the gameplay, all amazing. I was scared out of my mind just walking in the building. The noise had me panicking over every little corner. Playing this game with headphones on is a MUST.

Just got to this. Jesus you have to instal a fucking 136 Mb installer? Get it together for PS4, Sony. This shit is just silly.

Just remember that you have to 'PS button' exit out of GOWA (once the 136 Mb install is complete) and drop down into your game folder to initiate TLOU.

Just finished my first playthrough of the demo. I was playing on hard with listen mode (and prompts, tutorials, etc.) off, the way it was intended. Couple of thoughts:

+ controls are very weighty, but they feel fucking great
+ the aiming feels loose, but guns feel like they have impact and it only adds to the tension when you get overwhelmed (plus there are supposedly upgrades to tighten it up later)
+ crafting seems like it could be really fun, it made exploring for supplies feel worth my time
+ atmosphere is tense, with great sound design (and voice acting is spot on)
+ the last part where you have to clear out that room of enemies was pretty tense, I went in there pretty confident which quickly turned into running for my life while wasting shots trying to get them off me
+ love the way music kicks in just when things are getting tense, made me uncomfortable (in a good way)
+ animations are fantastic, I especially love the way Joel moves around when close to walls and when crouched behind cover
+ love the checkpoints! seriously no time is wasted, just right back into it
+ hitting the controller to fix the flashlight

- the only negative I'd say is that some of the environment looked pretty inconsistent, but it's hardly anything to complain about because everything else looked amazing

I just pre-ordered the game, I can't fucking wait.

You are so right. I almost freaked-out..started searching for a pre-release walkthrough guide on amazon.
I'm such a freaking wimp when it comes to suspense horror!

This is the first game in a long time where I held my breath during a fight. The last was Dark Souls.

The demo is amazing, but is there any way to unlock Survivor difficulty? Playing through on hard doesn't unlock it

It looks like we are going to have to beat Hard mode first (in the purchased copy)

I'm looking forward to Survivor mode as well =)

Played the PAX demo and could barely hear shit, even though it was longer I enjoyed this much more thanks to dat delicious 5.1 dts.

Major props on the sound design.

So far the demo is killing my hype a little, but I've only just gotten past that one clicker that you throw bottles at or whatever. So far feels like a lot of walking and the occasional quicktime event.

edit: Uh... Nevermind. Got to the first *real* gameplay segment with the 6 or so zombies in the room. Made a few rotations through the small area that I could get through without being spotted and decided that my best play was to silently strangle the one zombie that I had access to, then blow my initial shots on the one clicker in the room. I managed to kill one more zombie and then I ran out of ammo and basically just outran the remaining three until I saw a ledge I could climb up on. Got on it, used it as a chokehold to kill the zombies one at a time with a pipe as they climbed up.

Holy shit. I haven't been that genuinely excited by a game since... Shadow of the Colossus or God Hand, maybe? This is good fun. I like this.

This is the first game in a long time where I held my breath during a fight. The last was Dark Souls.

That's a good way to put it, I felt physically tense during that whole last sequence. I can't believe in 2 weeks I'm going to get 10 - 15 hours of this. It's like a buffet, lol.

I don't even wanna look further. Don't wanna spoil myself. xD

I'm liking the impressions I'm seeing in this thread. I was hoping it'd be a tense survival horror game. If they really pulled this off then I'm gonna have to be like "see, Capcom, we don't need 50 zombies attacking us at once while we blow them away with an endless supply of ammo. This is how it should be done." And then cry about not having a RE game like it.

Seriously?

Yeah I was gonna say this, too. At least play the whole demo first. Also note that people felt the same way about RE6's demo and some turned around when they actually got the full game. Really when you play part of a demo it can feel not quite as good as it could because it's taken out of context.

This demo was absolutely brilliant. I played and then handed it over to my brother to play, and we had completely different experiences in the encounter. It was amazing. There are so many subtleties and details as well.

I need this game.

Just finished it. Abrupt ending there, but I can see why they do that. I'm dying to play more.

Visually, it's just as strong as UC3. They have the same little touches from the UC games, like Joel shielding his face when you get too close to falling water. I also like how they mix in the objects in the environment that you can interact with. They make it obvious, yet not overwhelming.

There's a lot to do with the controls, but nothing seemed overwhelming. I do hope they allow you to custom map in the final game. I don't like the sprint button mapped to the same side of the controller that I'm using to move with. It's just little awkward.

The 5.1 DTS mix is phenomenal. I have a 6.1 setup and the simulated sound of the rear center channel really stayed active. In that final section when shit hit the fan, I was on edge because I could hear the clicking getting closer behind me, as I'm 2x4ing the shit out of the Runner in front of me. Good stuff.

This game has many similarities to Manhunt. Many indeed.

It really does. And that's a good thing.

was any one else quiet shocked at the actual graphics of the outside area before you went in? I'm not a graphics whore by any stretch, but just comparing it to past ND games, The pillar textures overlapped on buildings and it was just a flat texture of leaves etc, looked really naff.

Once I got inside with my astro's on. Jeebusss! I've had ltd edition pre ordered for ages. Can not wait! Just struck me as a bit odd, the graphics side of it

I'm watching the blue jays game here in canada (still going btw) and I must have seen the tv spot in every commercial break. What a catchy tune... "Joel has done some terrible things..." Do do do do do do... >_>

So I'm messing around with the demo file..

and.."DYSENTERY OUTBREAK"

LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. xD

Will try to gain more info.

Edit:

It seems to me that this is part of a facebook game. Wait, did I miss the facebook game or something?

I'm getting old school Resi vibes from this game, just from the sense of desolation the sound design evokes. Hell, even the menu sounds are evocative of horror genre classics. :P

Awesome stuff. ND can try their hand at any genre, it seems.

EDIT:

Yeah, I'm not finishing this demo. This game is bought.
