The Last of Us Demo (GoW:A Exclusive) Discussion Thread

That entire list sounds literally like an uncharted 3 reskin with some uncharted 2 weapon modes

So either they took the UC3 route to save on time MP work or that list is just a few ideas/left overs.

I'm going with the former. Don't know how I feel if that is how the MP will go down.

Additional from previous post:

Mark By Ear You can mark enemies through walls in Listen Mode.
Mark Awareness Know when enemies mark you.
Craftsman Teammates within 5 meters also receive items you craft.
Firm Aim Recoil is reduced in cover.
Weapon Radar Weapon pick-ups are displayed on your radar.
Item Radar Non-weapon item pick-ups are displayed on your radar.
Fast Melee Upgrades Upgrade melee weapons faster.
Peekaboo Aim faster from behind cover.
Pistol Auto-zoom Gain additional zoom with any pistol.
Item Listener Item pick-ups appear behind walls in Listen Mode.
Improved Weapon Hints Power weapon icons appear from a greater distance.
Group Mark When you add a marker, all surrounding enemies are marked as well.

Also, there are these "Books" that you collect from the world.

Edit: I think this is a combination of MP and SP stuff, btw. I'm seeing SP stuff now as I read.

Odd question, but how are the death animations/ragdolls (Player death and enemy death)? Sufficient weight to them, or a little floaty like Dead Space?

Can't for the life of me finish the combat scenario without getting spotted, gah. Is it possible? :P

strangle the first dude, post up on the wall where you can see the clicker, throw a brick into that hallway he's in front of to distract him, he then walks up toward the wall you can come around and stealth shank him and he dies. The key is to kill him the rest of the dudes are easy.

edit:Without getting spotted? Fuck I doubt it. The other zombie guys seem to notice you at the slightest hint of a noise.

The player death cuts off really quickly, but the enemies feel weighty.

When you first drop, turn around and wait for one to go into a room by himself, let him walk a bit and strangle him. Wait a bit for another that walks around then go back to where you first dropped, turn the corner and one is standing with his back facing you. Strangle him, etc. etc. from there.

Wow the 130 MB DL (not even the demo) has the subtitles for the whole game, I think. LOL.

It certainly has the savedata icons for the chapters.

It also has the lore for the Books.

I'm no fan of Gamestop, but this just seems wrong. Find a Redbox with it in stock and spend the 2 bucks imo.

Literally go in and tell the cashier why you're buying it used and that you plan on returning it for your money back. nine times out of ten, he or she will be fine with it and if they aren't they don't know what they're talking about. Gamestop employees are encouraged to upsell this lenient return policy as a selling point for buying used games instead of new ones.

I asked all three employees that were there, including a manager, if it was cool for me to buy it with the intention of returning it and they were all fine with it. I pre-ordered a game as thanks, cause I know how important pre-orders and membership sign-ups are for their job continuity. (Time for a story: when I got only a few pre-orders and rewards sign-ups for a month working at gamestop (despite only working eight hours a week) literally every manager and assistant manager from every store in a 20 mile radius all huddled together in the back of the store to tell me what a bad job I was doing and how I should probably just quit for 45 minutes or so until I was literally crying. This was just over pre-orders and memberships. So, next time you're in a gamestop, throw those part-timers a bone.)

Like "I just killed a man and that's going to stay with me for the rest of my life" weighty?

Hard to say without having actual people in the demo, but there's something about the blood splatter and the motion blurring that really stands out to me. The melee attacks are especially very brutal and convincing, they seem to do what uncharted 3 tried with animation contextual to nearby objects much better, so I saw Joel beat the shit out of a runner, smash his head off a table and then curbstomp him. Another where he just swung a board and the head had a satisfying pop right next to him. If I keep going I may sound like a serial killer.

I kinda want to try a gore filter run because I don't really know how that would work here.

I got this too. It was awesome. Thanks again for getting the demo for me!

Yes it is definitely possible. The fun part is figuring it out. Hint:
After dropping down turn 180 and wait behind cover. One of the runners will go into the dark side room. Kill him first.

*Multiplayer info .

A melee based multiplayer could be cool, where you use other players are human shields and scavenge the map for weapons to use. Could be an interesting spin on the 'arena deathmatch' genre of games.

With the potential inclusion of split-screen, it would be awesome if the CO-OP is as meaty as Uncharted 3's, although the fact that The Last of Us isn't advertised to run in 3D makes me sceptical.

Just played it but still not feeling the hype for this. It's all very gorgeous especially the sound and music. But on the other hand it sorta confirms my expectations that it will be like this: Interactive scene > walk some bit > interactive scene > walk some bit > interactive scene > actual gameplay > interactive scene...
Don't get me wrong, I would gladly play though the complete game. But I'm not that a big fan of those heavily scripted games. If only the demo was a bit more fleshed out.

For whatever its worth, a podcast stated that this demo is not a good representation of the final game. It'll probably open up more in the full game.

Yeah I'm not totally sold either. I'm certainly impressed by the atmosphere and dialogue, but you hit what I felt about this demo right on the head.

That said, I don't expect the full game to be like that anyways. Uncharted 2 never really shined in any particular category, but the variation and pacing are what made it so damn good. I expect to see that here.

That song that plays when you select the demo on the XMB is pretty good. I hope it's a good representation of what the rest of the soundtrack will be like.

They probably have the final game already. Embargo ends this week.

Yeah, you're right. They'll have to wait another week to publish something though. They usually do an article for demos of big games but maybe in this case it's not worth it since the game is right around the corner.

Damn, I played the demo twice this morning and all i want to do is play it again. What's wrong with me!? I haven't had that feeling in a long time. I need this.

Played the demo on Normal. Did shitty. Try again on Normal? NO! Lets try hard.

Did more shitty til I started using bricks and bottles like crazy. I used the sound-vision thingy once I think to make sure a room was clear. I honestly think I'd just use the ability all the time if I get the full game. I didn't find the games mechanics lent themselves well to peeking into a doorway. Every time I entered that long room to the right form where you land I was doing so blind because you can't get a decent look in without completely exposing yourself.

I ended up going to that half-cover stone taking out the guy there and just tossing bottles and bricks to lure another two of them over.

Blades are pretty much non-existent on Hard mode. Save those up. I had no shivs left so I had to take out all the runners first before taking out the clicker with a gun. Lack of health kits (at least in the very very very combat limited demo) really aren't important because if you are seen you might as well start the encounter over anyway :P

Can't say I was all that into the game. Beautiful visuals but I'm tired of destroyed city environments. I didn't like the long period of savaging at the beginning either. Uncharted had long segments between combat but they had puzzles and platforming at least I hope this game has more than just moving furniture or the occasional assist-boost.

I hope NDs next game has some more open areas. Not talking Elder Scrolls rolling (repetitive) fields but something like the Jak and Daxter games. Walk a few steps left and right before hitting a beautifully destroyed carefully worn wall. I'm so tired of hiding behind things too :lol I've been a bit sour towards this gen recently. Been hitting the N64/PS1 backlog.

just played the demo. I can't stand it. the controls are awful and it really doesn't look impressive at all. I'm glad because I would have purchased it without seeing the demo. another case of too much hype and the game not delivering at all.

Bullshit reasons.

Explain why the controls are awful. Explain why the game doesn't look impressive at all.

I'm all for differing opinions, but...

Based on the demo demonstration video, I would say the visual presentation is far less striking as Naughty Dog have offered usually.

Reading the all the good comments about The Last of Us has got me seriously hyped, Can anyone PM me access to the dummy account as well?

Please if it ain't too much trouble?

Really enjoyed what I played. Controls are very tight. Ammo/supplies are scarce. The scenarios with the Clickers were intense and forced you to think on your feet and use your resources sparingly. The AI never felt cheap .. They seemed to react appropriately based on my actions. Stealthy gameplay worked well. Hand to hand combat is very satisfying ... Very "visceral"... The graphics do not disappoint... They are very impressive. The only aspect of controls I didn't like was the shooting. Shooting seemed imprecise but maybe that was by design. This is a thinking man's survival shooter. You can't just reload at will. You can't just switch weapons at will, you have to actually stop what you're doing and open your backpack which takes time and can get you killed. If you want to apply a bandage, that also takes time so if you choose to do so you better make sure you are out of danger. The attention to detail is fantastic. The character interactions have this wonderfully natural flow. I can already see myself growing attached to them. The level design in the demo has an Uncharted 2 feel. Can't wait to play the full game. Very impressed !

How big is the demo?
You download the file from PSN, then how big is the rest?

I didn't check but someone mentioned 2 gigs.
Edit: there you go..

One thing that people haven't brought up often is how health works. No regen BS and using medkits actually takes time so forget about doing it during a fight.

I've been downloading the demo since morning. Now it's 6 pm and the download still stuck at 1%. What gives?

Cancel and try again.
