Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

I've tried to play lots of God of War, and in fact own every game because I had been told by friends that they are incredible, but I just can't bring myself to finish GoW1. It's just so samey and tedious the whole way through and I can't see what the fuss is about.

I'm playing through the series myself now for the first time.
I played God of War 1 in 2011, and got the Platinum, but it burnt me out from the gameplay for a good while. I started God of War 2 last week, Platinumed it, and am now on my second playthrough on hard mode to Platinum Chains of Olympus.

My problem with the first game is that after travelling to a good few different locations at the start of the game you end up stuck in the same area for like 80% of the game, and the game just starts to drag on at that point. Where are you up to by the way?

I found GoW 2 and even CoO a lot more enjoyable than the first game, even though CoO was like 4 and a half hours long :/.

iOS is the best thing to happen to handheld gaming since the Game Boy.

Nintendo going third party would benefit all gamers.

Always online is a good thing. I don't care about people with shit connections. Get in the 21st century.

Thank god for this thread and I totally forgot about it.

I'm going 100% digital on the 3DS and I have no problems with the lack of account system.

I find DmC much more enjoyable than the following action adventure games that are universally praised:

Batman arkham asylum, Assassin's Creed, God of War.

While there are problems with DmC (shit boss fights), and it's not up to par with the previous games, it's a pretty competent action game, sad to see not a lot people appreciates it.

Batman arkham asylum also has shit boss fights.

Mario Kart DS is shit, snaking ruined the balance of the game, giving light karts an advantage over heavy ones, high acceleration+snaking+item spams pretty much means the heavy characters are not fun to play as, super mario kart is the best mario kart interms of balance.

-Star Ocean 3 is one of the most fun JRPG ever. I said fun not "the best" - it has its big flaws but playing around them (synths-sometimes broken combat etc) you can have a fuck ton of fun

-FF8 is awesome and FF7 is absolutely not the best. FF5 FUCKING HANDS DOWN FOR EVER

-Star Ocean 4 its fun if you don't take it seriously

-Zelda the wind waker is ok but the backtraking etc its fucking awful

-Kingdom Hearts stopped being good after the second one. KH1>KH2>the rest is garbage

-LOTROII/III for GBA is a better hack'n'slash than Diablo 2. I said it

-WOTLK is the best expansion for WoW. After WOTLK the game got shittier and shittier and TBC is not the best, it was for no lifers only

-Bioshock is fucking amazing and Bioshock 2 lacked the magic that made the first good but was better at gunplay/gameplay in general

-PC gaming rules the shit out of consoles

-PAPER MARIO THE THOUSAND YEAR DOOR IS THE BEST RPG EVER CREATED BY HUMAN KIND OTHER THAN SUPER STAR SAGA WHICH WAS CONCEIVED BY ALIEN MINDS BECAUSE ITS FUCKING AWESOME JESUS I'M HAVING A SEIZURE

I don't like Majora's Mask that much, Zelda 2 is one of my favorite and I replay it from time to time (hearing the last palace music feel so good each time).

Dragon Age is one of the games that disappointed me the most, to me it remain a bad game and its sequel sound like a very bad overpriced DLC to me (not alone on this one I guess tho).

I can't bring myself to like Mass Effect even though it's not a bad game.

I find Witcher a great game but the combat system is literally crushing my appreciation for the game each time I give it a try. Not that it's that hard, I just don't have any fun with it.

I got bored of Skyrim after 2 days of playing non-stop and then realising I was doing the same thing over and over without having much fun and would probably do so for the rest of the game.

I enjoy Blizzard's games because the gameplay is great and I surprisingly like the story even though it's really simple and on the verge of being bad sometimes... I find that amazing on its own way.

FF7 wasn't THAT awesome and those beyond were at most okay-ish but moslty crap
And for great justice :
FF5 FUCKING HANDS DOWN FOR EVER

All of your criticisms are delusional, hot garbage

No, they're spot on, but your comment indicates they were probably perfect for this thread.

but this one made me lol.

Do you use your scrollwheel like a chimp?

In HL2? No. I use the number keys. The thing is that's not sufficient. They have these completely pointless subcategories of weapon, like the pistols are under one number key, the machine guns are under another, etc. If each weapon were just mapped to exactly one key 1-9, it would be perfect (and a no-brainer since Doom at the latest). Instead they made it clunky.

Squaresoft made some great games that are still playable now. No question.

However, there is no future for that IP. All the talent is gone from Square Enix and all's thats left is staff that can only make games on portables, because they haven't got a clue about consoles and pc's. The only thing Square Enix are good for right now is as a publisher, as a developer they're in complete disarray.

Final Fantasy is dead, Versus will be more of the same dross, A Ream Reborn will bomb (for the second time) and there will never be games like 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, or 12 again. You are only trying to fool yourself if you think otherwise.

Probably not all that controversial, because I suspect many think that, but its rarely said.

Instead of the negative controversial opinions, let me try some positive ones.

1. Final Fantasy VII (especially the improved PC localization of it) IS the best Final Fantasy game and IS the best JRPG to date.

2. I love Metal Gear Solid. I have always loved the gameplay (even though it doesn't necessarily hold up anymore for the older entries), and I have always found the story fascinating and enjoyable. That doesn't mean I don't see major, major flaws in it (story especially), but an MGS game is always and event to which I hugely look forward. It's crazy, overdone, absurd, and I love it. Grand/amibitious/insane > minimalist.

(Exceptions: The radar-less over-the-top camera in original MGS3 was bullshit, period. MGS2's story had value but crossed the line into actual shit for far too long in the last act.)

3. Final Fantasy XII, despite its narrative problems, is the finest Final Fantasy since VII and could and should have been a template for the development of JRPGs since. Instead, it was relatively panned by FF fanboys (IMO at least contributing to the shit that was XIII), and the only game to take some inspiration from it was Xenoblade Chronicles.

RESIDENT EVIL 4 is horrible. Controls, setting, Leon, lack of zombies and MUCH more make this a POS.

Ouch. I read over many pages of this thread, but that just hurts to read.

Even after many mechanically superior and "modern" games that aped RE4, it still remains the gold standard for me. I just love that game.

That does seem to be the prevailing opinion. I'm going to be "controversial" and say that I disagree, although I have only hope, not evidence for it.

I think SE has some amazing talent, at the very least on the technical, art, and gameplay sides (IMO the XIII battle system was genius... once you actually got to use it... 30 hours into the game). They also have some serious budgets. I think where they've lost their way is their organization. They don't know how to control the size and direction of a project.

I retain hope that the Tactics/XII DNA is still there, and that the next major Final Fantasy will have been developed along those lines. If one thinks about it, in terms of single-player Final Fantasies in the last decade, what's their big misfire? Just XIII really. XII was bold and impressive, just suffered from a dull plot development. XIII was the one that sucked, and any sequels it may get are probably just B teams trying to squeeze some money out of that universe and engine. I don't think it's all over.

- FFXII was my favorite Final Fantasy of all time (and I've played them all, save II)

- Zelda is an overrated series

- I'm tired of Mario/Sonic games from Nintendo and wish they would do more varied stuff

- I found Skyrim to be horribly bland and uninteresting - the only redeeming quality was the music

- I think all RPG's should be more like Dark Souls

- I hope we never get a FFVII remake, and they leave the series alone

- I hope we never get a FFVII remake, and they leave the series alone

Ah, you made me think of another few.

1. Prequels are lazy and pointless. They indicate a developer doesn't have the balls to create and only want to go for the safe, easy money. (There are a couple of notable exceptions, like MGS3, which even though set in the past was (a) excellent and (b) integral to the story in 4. Setting MGS Portable Ops, Peace Walker, and now probably V also in the past is a great example of lacking the balls to try something new.)

2. People MUST STOP clamoring for remakes of their favorite games (Metal Gear 1, FF VII, etc.). An occasional quick HD remaster -- just to bring a now technically subpar game to spec (like the Shadow of the Colossus remaster) -- is fine... it's easy, cheap, and wastes no real talent. But to ask for expensive remakes like the fabled FF VII, or the original Metal Gear, etc... it is lazy and pointless. It's people being afraid of the future and therefore trying to go back into the past.

I enjoyed the mass effect three ending (I played the extended cut, not original).

I personally believe that most people didnt like it because the "cutscene" portion of it was very short. People forget that you PLAYED through the ending, it wasn't just a cutscene.

Basically what I am saying is if they removed the entire last hour of the game and made it into a cutscene, people wouldnt have cried about it as much. It was the same way with fallout 3.

Also, I personally think the new ending
(the one where you lose the battle against the reapers, but liara saves a hologram of herself deep within the earth for future generations) should have been canon so that the mass effect series could continue on in a meaningful way.

This. I agree. The whole mass effect series was amazing! Would have loved for Shepard to survive as well, he was a true hero in my book/game but oh wells.

Looking forward to 4!

Demons souls is 100x better than dark souls. Also, fuck blight town. Shouldn't be releasing your game with some fucking terrible frame rate issues like that. God dammit I almost vomited because it gave me a headache. Couldn't finish the game because of that shit.

/venting.

This so much.

I'm also going to add stop asking for sequels to a series that A) had a conclusive ending, and B) have a creator who said they're done with it. I'm looking at you, Mother fans.

Good one.

Metal Gear being a great example. That story was super-duper done. That was the whole point of 4. So asking for sequels will either result in garbage (story-wise) like Rising (in the future) or fill-in-the-blanks boringness like Peace Walker.

State your "controversial" gaming opinion here, members of GAF: opinion that you personally held close at heart but at odds against the majority of video game enthusiasts here in GAF or at large.

However, please be careful not to venture into trolling territory please :) And remember, do not herald your own personal opinion as the absolute truth that others must abide to or else.

I'll start:

I consider myself as a huge fan of Legend of Zelda series, and I have played almost all the games available in the series. However, for the life of me I cannot bring myself to like Majora's Mask, a game that I see many fans of Legend of Zelda herald as the best in the series. I personally thought the Ocarina of Time was and still is the more superior version, and Skyward Sword is a vastly, vastly superior game compared to it.

Its game structure is unique, I'll give it that, but for the life of me I just cannot bring myself to enjoy it. Generally speaking I just don't like to be rushed when playing my video game: I like playing games that let me complete it at my own pace (which is why I like most RPGs, I suppose)

So what is your "controversial" gaming opinion, GAF?

I completed Majora's Mask and tbh you're not right in saying that you are rushed and you cannot complete it at your own pace. You learn very quickly how to go back in time, as it were, with the new skills and things you learn opening up more and more of the game. It is a fantastic game, but not nearly as good as OOT for me.

I've enjoyed lots of games that were supposed to be average or rubbish. Games such as Godfather 2, and Dune 2000, one of my favourite games of all, as it was a game style I had never played before, but I loved it.

These are my most controversial opinions, I guess...

- Although being a mess, I found the plot of Final Fantasy XIII-2 highly entertaining (dat tomato)
- Star Ocean 4, apart from its writing, is a fun jRPG (and even the writing is fun if you expect a trainwreck)
- Kojima has completely lost it with the ending of MGS 4( waaaaay to much fanservice, ridiculous twists)
- Speaking of MGS: Part 2 is the best one of the series and I liked Raiden as a protagonist
- I don't like playing as Big Boss/Snake in MGS and I find David Hayter EXTREMELY overrated
- I couldn't care less about GTA and Rockstar-games in general
- I think that Square Enix will eventually put its act together and deliver good stuff (the japanese branch that is...)

Pretty tame, but it's my first post here after all. Hello, GAF.

Resident Evil 4 is a pile. Worthless control scheme which fans somehow attribute to it`s greatness.

Half Life 2 is a pile. Does everything that it`s ancestor did but in a bad way.

- I found Skyrim to be horribly bland and uninteresting - the only redeeming quality was the music

That's only controversial when you're talking to your crazy mainstream friends. Here on NeoGAF that's the popular opinion! Skyrim is easily one of the most boring video games I've ever played.

I feel like a lot of the posts in this thread are going completely hyperbolic just to elicit a response.

100% true; all of them.

- I despise mascot fighting games
- JRPG's are garbage
- Prequels are usually trash
- Sim racing games are boring
- Labeling gamers w/ terms such as dudebros is fucking annoying
- I welcome DRM

The reaction towards the server issues during the launch of Diablo III was completely overblown and ridiculous.

I've held that opinion since last summer, but I believe it is a bit less controversial now after the SimCity debacle.

My controversial gaming opinions

The world would be a better place if MS declared bankruptcy tomorrow - the gaming division is the only redeemable feature in that company - and they've been on hiatus for years now

I actually like FFXIII (so far, just started), and I wish Square would go back to making just JRPG's, break off the rest of the company into a whole different division for stuff like TR

I like third party exclusives, because in general third party games are watered down garbage.

I'm not a fan of CoD, or Halo, or any other generic FPS. OTOH, different games such as Bioshock though FPS are awesome.

Gears of War needs to die - let it die gracefully instead of making too many sequels. It ended well, don't overdo it

Level 5 makes even better RPG's than Square

Realistic racers suck - I can just drive my car instead

Here are my two:

  • Ocarina of Time is probably the most overrated game of all time. It's not even the best N64 game, let alone the best game ever. As far as Zelda games go, LttP has held up much better.
  • Nintendo hasn't made a 'must-play' console game since the Gamecube days, with the possible exception of Super Mario Galaxy and Wii Sports (if you're into that). Xenoblade Chronicles was really the best reason to own a Wii.

But Xenoblade is also a Nintendo game.

If it's not from gameplay, it doesn't deserve to be called a screenshot.

I hate when I see "New screens from X!" and it turns out it shows no gameplay and could as well be from tech demo...

The non-payoff ending and final boss battle single-handedly turned FFXIII from a good game to one of the worst RPGs I've ever had the misfortune of finishing.

The game was fantastic when I was expecting it to eventually make sense. I love the gameplay, the graphics, the music, the combat system, and a few of the characters, but the plot is so offensively bad that I wish I never even played the game at all.

Final Fantasy XIII was a great game (I think I said this specifically earlier in the thread. More importantly Fang is the best character in Final Fantasy since Vivi, also it has zero to do with people who think she maybe a Lesbian, even if she was it would only make her look bad by choosing to be with someone as annoying as Vanille.

Vaan is the best written and developed character in all of Final Fantasy. The development and character growth over FF XII, RW, and TA2 is fucking amazing. Also he was the best new addition in Dissidia 012.

Paper Mario is garbage.

Mario and Luigi RPG's are Garbage.

Xenoblade isn't that great, not even Monolith Soft's best game, and not even close to the best game from Op RF, that goes to The Last Story.

Gameboy Micro is the best handheld ever made.

Ultimecia, Kuja, and Vayne are the ONLY good FF Villians.

PWAA 1 is better then 3.

Halo 4 and Reach are the only good Halo games.

Silent Hill Shattered Memories is not only the best Silent Hill but the best game released this gen.

BlazBlue>Guilty Gear

I think the best thing that could happen to consoles is PS4 having similar DRM to Xbone aimed at transferring profits from Gamestop to the publishers and developers.

I have an extremely unrealistic inkling of hope that the Wii U's failure will eventually force Nintendo to go third party Sega style, finally allowing me to play the next Zelda at 1080p on my PC with an Xbox 360 controller.

Also, it would be cool if Nintendo made a Zelda game that could actually hold a candle to Majora's Mask or Ocarina of Time. Not better, not even as good, how about just half as good Nintendo? You can do it!

Oh, and the only great game Bungie ever made was Halo 1.

I don't necessarily see Quick Time Events as a bad thing. Its always about the context how they're implemented.

They can either enhance a game or destroy it completely.

I actually like FFXIII (so far, just started), and I wish Square would go back to making just JRPG's, break off the rest of the company into a whole different division for stuff like TR

Square does pretty much only JRPGs, and stuff like TR\Deus Ex\etc is published, not developed by Square.

100% true; all of them.

- I despise mascot fighting games

For what reason? The gameplay or the concept in general? Would you despise something like Super Smash Bros if it played just like a Street Fighter style game, but just had Nintendo branded characters?

I find the whole thing ridiculous. The concept more than anything as mascots/characters fighting each other just doesn't appeal to me at all. I like the video game wrestling thing going on; fighting games aren't that high on my list so there is also that.

First post and I'd like to get this off my chest.

- I like Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 1 AND 2.

- I get bored with games quickly and YouTube their ending. Also do this with games that look interesting but can't bother myself to make the time to buy and play them.

- Most games are too long.

- Also, Saints Row > GTA

Knights of the old republic was the best Xbox game

I hate fighting games (DoA,MK,Tekken etc.)

And yes I'm bad at them I'll admit it but even when I win / do well I just don't like the closed box nature of the game, fights fit into these tidy little areas and I have some circle to move around in

Open-worlds make the best games for me

Nuts & Bolts is the best Banjo game.

You're not alone in that one bruddah.

nutslogo.png

Best game in the franchise.

Final Fantasy XIII was a great game

Interesting.

Vaan is the best written and developed character in all of Final Fantasy.

Fascinating.

Xenoblade isn't that great

Agree so far. The parts are pretty great, but the sum doesn't seem to work that well.

Halo 4 and Reach are the only good Halo games.

Curious.

Silent Hill Shattered Memories is not only the best Silent Hill but the best game released this gen.

Huh.
