Not as visually striking as Uncharted 3 maybe, but versus other console games this is easily up there among the very best looking ones.
What do you think are the possible reasons for the step down? Is it more stylistically or technically less impressive, or a bit of both?

Really?

Uncharted 2 (96 meta score) was a disappointment?

Bioshock 1 (96 meta score) was a disappointment?

Red Dead Redemption (95 meta score) was a disappointment?

The Orange Box (96 meta score) was a disappointment?

Portal 2 (95 meta score) was a disappointment?

Mass Effect 2 (94 meta score) was a disappointment?

Tell Tales Walking Dead (94 meta score) was a disappointment?

Journey (92 meta score) was a disappointment?

Batman: Arkham Asylum (90 metascore) was a disappointment?

Super Mario Galaxy 1/2 (97 metascore) was a disappointment?

...........If so than I question if you like video games or not.

I guess what I'm trying to say overall with these games/score is to say, yeah some games get highly rated and end up being a disappointment (GTA IV, ME3, and UC3 come to mind)....but at the end of the day there are still a SHITLOAD of other games that end up getting rated highly by critics and end up truly becoming a great experience.

So why not drop the skepticism and just bask in the pure fun and joy of being hyped :p

Uncharted 2 (96 meta score) One of the best games this gen

Bioshock 1 (96 meta score) Compraed to System Shock? Yes it was

Red Dead Redemption (95 meta score) Disappointment is to strong of a word but no did not live up to the hype

The Orange Box (96 meta score) Played all these games on PC when new

Portal 2 (95 meta score) Total disappointment

Mass Effect 2 (94 meta score) Yes started the trend of turning ME into another dumb shooter

Tell Tales Walking Dead (94 meta score) One of the best games this gen

Journey (92 meta score) To pretenses for its own good

Batman: Arkham Asylum (90 metascore) Got real repetitive and the last boss sucked

Super Mario Galaxy 1/2 (97 metascore) One of the best games this gen

So only 3 out of your 10 lived up to the hype for me. Also you left out a lot of recent things like ME3 and BS:I. All i'm saying is if anyone is gonna take video games for anything other then a pass time then video game journalists are gonna have to stop putting 10s on every AAA game that comes out. Do you see people given shit like Transformers and Pain and Gain good reviews?

Wouldn't be surprised due to the game being more demanding than Uncharted.

If you think about it..the levels are much larger (some reviewers mentioning they got lost a few times and had to use the map that joel carries with him)...while the levels in uncharted were mostly narrow linear corridors.

Plus it's a longer game...and the ai is much more complex..and a vastness of other things as well...so it's probably just a more demanding game due to the ambitiousness of it.

I would just like to make a heads up to you guys, especially to those who are on a media blackout. The ending is on youtube.I`m dead serious I look up the last of us in the search engine under today and I saw it.I just thought I would you give a heads up for those for new stuff on youtbe.

Yeah I just think reviews being paid off by advertising dollars genuinely does happen ALOT in the games industry where it wouldnt in other places. That's why theres no go-to review guy or publication like an Ebert or Leonard Maltin or Tom Shales in the video game world. Hopefully this time its one of the legit times.

Only three hours in, so I shouldn't say to much yet but... I feel like it's a bit of both.

I'm guessing it's mostly the art style though, the dark and moody surroundings doesn't make the graphics pop as it does in Uncharted.

Both the length of the game and the scope of the environments are possible culprits too.

Man that sucks, only place I feel safe right now is here on the Gaf.

agreed. Just today on The Last of Us forum (on Naughty Dog's website) I seen several members complain that someone is sending them private messages of the ending to The Last of Us on the title of the message. People are just that pathetic now-a-days. I would had been pissed, if I didn't see the thread warning about it. I seen I had a unread message in my inbox (of course, I didn't even click on it)

I will never understand how people can go around spoiling shit like that. Even if I was a total asshole I just don't see the point, it's such a petty and bitchy thing to do. It's like keying someone's car.

God damn do video games need a Roger Ebert. RIP.

Not a single guy in the industry that I trust anymore, especially after the last guy I liked gave a game a perfect score then talked about all its flaws on a podcast. Anymore if i'm on the fence I watch gameplay videos on youtube to see if I like it.

agreed. it's sad and pathetic! I'm just greatful I seen that thread, because I would had clicked on my inbox, and had one of my most anticipated games EVER spoiled for me. I would had been pissed.

Well that's that. Thought I could hold out until PS4, but looks like I'll be getting a used PS3 later this month too.

Can't wait to play this.

Can we start a support group for people who (probably) can't get the game until the release date?

I'm dying here. :'(

I've just been replaying the demo several times. I love the last part. Managed to stealth it several times on hard. Though there was one time something different happened and I ran. Was hilarious.
at the last encounter of the demo where you can crouch and get behind a rectangular slab (broken pillar on the ground) I choked out the first guy. I threw a brick at the wall and then another. Usually I only had one come over to investigate, but two runners came this time. I went around the end of the slab which was barely enough to keep me hidden. They split up and walked both sides of it so there was nothing I could do but stand up and run.

Can someone spoil me the intro on why it's the best ever?

I'm playing the game and I think I know why people are saying its the best intro ever and just want to make sure what I'm thinking is correct. lol.

I'm damn sleepy and i have no idea whats going on everywhere

Edit:God damn I just realized that staying up on the net and looking for LoU news is a death sentence. Gonna sleep for a week peaceout.

Haha. Pretenses.

LOL I was hoping I wasn't the only one who saw that. How ironic.

Also, this pretty much seals Naughty Dog's spot as top developer of this generation by not coming out with only one but two of the highest rated games this generation from two different IPs? Ridiculous.

I don't why this matters.

How many legitimate highly rated titles (90+ metacritic) come out in a year? A handful right?

So why not get hyped like a motherfucker knowing you might be on the verge of playing something incredible?

You don't find it unbearably pretentious to say that a game is "gaming's Citizen Kane moment"? That kind of hyperbolic nonsense doesn't get me hyped, it makes me roll my eyes.

Besides, if something is truly, lastingly good, you shouldn't need to mind-numbingly hype yourself for it, to the point where you purposefully deflect all reasonable criticism. Do you not like thinking? Personally, I like experiencing entertainment with my brain on.

I'm excited for Last of Us too, but I've also been reading game journalism since I was 11. "Masterpiece" and "landmark achievement" get used for any big-budget game with ambition. It's not a big deal, and even if it was, you'd have no way of seeing if your opinion correlates until you play the game yourself.

You realize this boils down to "OMG GUYS STOP GETTING HYPE!" right? It was one person's opinion.

Awesome :D

I was in awe (and panicked) when I realized that simply being behind something doesn't mean you're hidden. A runner saw me over a desk because I was "behind" it but not pressed against it. I figured just being behind something, I was good. I was not!

So hype = turning your brain off? And this is okay...why?

Citizen Kane review aside, there are plenty of other reviews employing hyperbole. Which is a no-no in film criticism and literary criticism, but still gets a free pass from much of the gaming community.

so lets recoment some movies to get in the mood for the game -

the road is obvious but what else?

Children of Men seems like a big inspiration. Both are stories of a man escorting a young woman through a post-apocalyptic world towards, hopefully, a better future.

And what kind of elitist attitude is this? People have been waiting for a few years to play this game. The reviews are making people excited and are the sole opinions of the people writing them. Don't like it? Ignore it. Someone calling TLoU "Gaming's Citizen Kane moment" isn't affecting you playing the game and having your own opinions about it.

Yeah. I read that somewhere so I always made sure to do that. lol.

What's elitist about it? I don't like bad journalism, and I dislike it even more when said journalism is encouraged. I love games, but I think gaming would be even better if the quality of discourse went up. If I thought games were just a silly diversion, I really wouldn't give a fuck about the kind of gushing hive mind drivel that passes for a "review".

I mean, given NDs past work, the trailers we've seen, and given game journalism's penchant for hype, how likely is it that this game is actually a monumental achievement in gaming history? It's possible, but not likely. It's probably a wonderful game though. Isn't that good enough? And what words do we use to describe games that actually are monumental achievements?

But I'm not trying to tell people not to be excited. Or maybe I just have a very different idea of what it means to be excited. I'm pretty weird, admittedly.

An what if it is a monumental achievement?

Half Life 2 surely was. An so was Bioshock. This gen is due for another achievement, and I have very little doubts that Naughty Dog can be the one's that deliver on that.

Just got an email from the retailer saying that they have the game in stock. Unfortunately Monday is a holiday so they'll only ship on Tuesday which means I'll have to wait until Wednesday. Damn.

There's your problem. Perfect score does not mean perfect game.

While I think a strong arugment could be made about 10/10 = perfect or not Ill agree. But the flaws being talked about where major and thus a game that is 10/10 should only have minor nitpicks and not huge valid complaints about gameplay

Shouldn't that be up to the reviewer though?
