Destiny Gameplay Premiere

We sat down with Chris Butcher for a lengthy interview, we'll have the video up at DBO sometime soon. Also have a nice recording of the music playing at the booth rotunda - it sounds amazing and we'll try to share that for all to listen.

Right now I'm typing up all the neat little E3 stories I collected last week. The Bungie folk are a lot of fun to hang out with.

Great vid. Lars did confirm that while the space is actual playable geometry, it's not really fleshed out yet. "Designers back at Bungie are at some point going to build amazing experiences in here."

I'm interpreting that to mean the geometry is built out, but content (encounters, loot, etc.) are not yet populated, but will be by ship, though it could come after I suppose.

I am assuming we will see basic quest or missions in those areas and the amazing experiences he was referring to is the team adding public events during and after launch.

Can't wait to see the support Bungie provides for this game after launch, going to be some big stuff.

I'm afraid of this. Activision is behind this game.

Considering the codename for the expansions is 'Comet' I'd say they're probably going to add asteroids to which you can travel with new locations, quests and loot.

I'm worried that its potential for future updates might be significantly limited due to its cross-gen nature - the first retail release will probably have to work on 4-gig 360s.
That, and the leaked ten-year plan being scheduled around "sequels" and major expansions.

Game looks incredible. Anxious to see what kind of sacrifices will be made to port the game to PS3/360.

Would love to enjoy this game in the best experience possible, but unfortunately I'll have to settle on getting it for the 360.

Wait this will be released on current-gen too? Then that's dumb. Making a new IP on old consoles will limit what it can do gameplay-wise. No wonder it looks like it plays like games we've already seen.

At least it looks nice.

Dump? Not at all. Consider the install base: Tens of millions on each current-gen console, and assuming Destiny is released the next spring, next-gen consoles still won't have anywhere near the same numbers.
Don't forget video games are a business, and even developers have to accommodate that.

And for some idiotic reason it will probably still not be possible to turn it down no matter how much disliked..

Music was integral part of the Halo experience, arguably. That said, Halos got a special waver, unknown if this is the case for Destiny.

I understand what you're saying. But, for me, that doesn't make any sense, if you see what I'm saying. Because the game would be better, if _I_ had the _option_. Simple as that. I feel the music is a distraction, because when I roam around killing aliens or whatever, the music doesn't amplify any feeling I have, so to speak. I'm the type of gamer that appreciates ambience, that is what enhances the experience for me.. The music is like a fly in the ear when I'm trying to concentrate. If I don't feel the music is appealing then the "integral part of the game"-argument is a fallacy - to me.

With that said, I love Marty's music when it's in the cutscenes.

You could override the game's music by playing your own and then just turn down the volume in the guide menu.

I see that you've never been a victim of the aural wedgie maneuver known in some parts of the world as "The O'Donnell".

If you were to DARE to listen to anything but the Master's work in Halo 3 and ODST, the games would throw a fit and turn off all NPC voices along with it. Because mute Suicide Grunts may not be how they were designed, but they're the kind of fun you deserve. You monster.

You know finally watched all the Bungie videos from E3 and I have to say I loved watching how they went off script on the showings in booth. I think that's the stuff that will stand out more then the scripted demo of it.

I really can't wait to see more of this game. I really can't. I actually may just double dip and pick it up on both PS3 and PS4. That's how amazing it's looking.

I think it was mentioned in some interview that Bungie aims for simultaneous release on all platforms.
So, not sure why you'd get it on both PlayStations. Unless you have friends who don't play on the other platform at all?

How soon is soon? I really want to hear some of the music.

Do we have any full length official music from Destiny? Can't find any on Youtube.

I think what's most interesting about destiny is that it clearly shows how bungie was planning to progress halo versus what 343 did.

For starters, the fallen clearly have some enemy simularities to the prometheans in halo 4. They have that teleportation thing, and the floaty guys, but unlike in halo 4, they clearly have defined roles determined primarily by proximity and range effectiveness.

In destiny they're scaling things up, more enemies, more class types, and larger levels, halo 4 went with less of everything, smaller levels, less enemy variety and a more limited sandbox.

I can't wait to see what divergent choices bungie and 343 are making, and what type of design ideologies they're adhearing to.

Destiny is my most anticipated game in a long long time. It looks like everything I have always wanted in a game.

Just a question, I have read that there will be space travel and you can even buy your own ships. Is this true? And was there any info at E3 about this, like will we be able to fly through space or will it be cutscenes like mass effect?

And thanks for the above video was great!

There's no word on that yet, just that there will be the ability to customize your own space craft and show it off. I do hope we get open world like space travel though.

Ok cool thanks for that. I really hope there is some big open space environment. Would really than be everything I have wanted. Imagine having your own ship, and pilot it to Saturn would be the most breathtaking thing ever created.

Take that a step further even. You leave the tower to go out on a hunting mission; you're out for some coveted loot. You fly through space destroying Fallen and Cabal spaceships and finally arrive at Venus. You fight off a couple of encounters with the Vex and finally get your loot. Then, as you're leaving your city-gone-ruin-dungeon you run into a public even where the super Vex boss is destroying and wrecking on other players. You decide to go help and score even bigger loot and Glimmer (Destiny currency) that could last you a month. After this public event, you feel inclined to go hit up some PvP matches, so you leave Venus, fight some more enemies in SPAAAAAAACE and arrive at your favorite arena on Mercury. you go a couple of rounds against other Guardians looking to have some fun and then, after playing so much that your friends get home from work or school, they join you and you go do a couple of story missions. Destiny looks to offer all of the aforementioned and more and I cannot wait to see how Bungie handles this game.

Oh wow man just wow!!! That sounds amazing and if it pulls through all this we have probably the best game ever made!

They have alluded to there being more than 3 by how they phrase their answers when they're asked this question.

Sounds like they are saving classes for expansions/sequels. Not a bad choice I think. The three so far sound amazing.

Gameplay wise I think Destiny looks good but not particularly innovative. I never found their incarnations of Halo very original either but it was tons of fun to play.

I need to read up on this game a lot more though to find out about the max party size, etc.

Kind of worried it will feel too much like an MMO. PErsonally, I'm not a big fan of generic quests. Got my fill of that back in the day and dread the thought of returning to it. Now, if the PvE is like Guild Wars 2 (all public objectives) then you will get my attention

I might be asking for too much. But really not a big fan of Classes either. Really loved the freeform approach in Demons' Souls & Dark Souls. Hopefully this game will come out before Dark Souls 2 does otherwise I might not have much time to try it out

edit- It really just depends on the setup. Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer had very fun Classes. But the game is very simple at heart. It's not asking me to devote endless hours to develop each individual class. I am free to master all the classes quickly (aka like a shooter such as Battlefield which is just fine)

I'd prefer them not to add more classes. For once i'd like a game that doesn't make constantly re-roll my character.
3 is enough, i think, keeps 'em simple. If they wanna add something, add additional alternate abilities (ie ability swapping system like Diablo 3 has).

Hope they put what they learned with Forge to use and have the ability to 'forge' public events onto those giant open spaces away from the main path.

I want to see some alien wildlife you can kill. I don't want to fight just soldiers/mercs. Give me robots and wildlife for some balance.

The big boss is a robot. So I would not be surprised to see smaller ones. And they said there are a number of alien races to fight against.

Gotta say what a turnaround this game has had for me. After the first reveal I was like 'eh sounds OK i guess', but after the gameplay vid at E3, I am so fucking on board. HYPED even. Looks, sounds and plays amazingly, judging by the video.

Steampunkmasked I have come across all too many games where I am constantly out done by someone with a better job or richer parents, and this makes game-play particularly cruel, so, to what extent will real life money be used, even if you are planning on using it?

What we can tell you right now is that the rewards you will gain by playing Destiny – and playing it well – will be earned. You will carve them from the hides of your enemies, after you stomp them into the ground of your favorite destinations.

Good question, great answer.
