Have there been any details about what the hubs are/mean? I know they were shown at the reveal some but I'm having trouble wrapping my head around it right now, beyond sort of a themed Home space.
I imagine that's what they will be. An safe area for inventory management, social interaction, perhaps trading items or an auction house, a store of items and so forth. And probably story related NPC's as well.
One thing that hasn't really been talked about much since the initial reveal has been the mobile aspects of the game. I have always thought it would be awesome with MMOish games to have a mobile app allowing you to continue gaining experience for your character, or check on things in game while just out and about in town.Even if it is only a fraction of the experience you would earn in the game proper. I know they haven't said much but this is definitely something I am hoping for and sounds like a route they are going. Hopefully there will be an Android app to go along with IOS.Or at work.
AusGamers: Can you explain in a bit more detail, how the persistent world, and the connections to those worlds actually works? You mentioned public areas, and wrapping my head around the idea of who gets to go in what area and when... I was talking to the Watch Dogs guys, and they were saying that basically what happens is that one person loads their game, and another persons game sort of overlaps that so that they can then interact with one another, but its just a smart system that does it automatically behind the scenes. I just dont really know how its going to work from your end.
Chris: Yeah. I can give you a specific example: if you look at the Sony stage demo of Destiny. Now in that environment, we only had seven players playing on stage, so its not like its a smart system trying to find everybody thats going in there... but just to illustrate the principles that are going on there.
So it starts out, if youre playing, and its just you by yourself, youre in a private area of the world. There are a lot of the private areas of the world, we do that so we can use all of those cinematic storytelling techniques that we know and love. You can do that when its your game, and you can change the world in all kinds of really meaningful ways there.
Then your friends can join you, with drop-in/drop-out co-op, so as Joe Staten was playing through there in the E3 stage demo, he had one friend join, and then another friend join, and they had three people playing still just in that private area. Then they went into an area of that world that is a public area, and those are areas of the experience in Destiny, where as your Fireteam moves towards those areas, the game is finding other Fireteams that are in that public area, and then matchmaking people together, and putting them in the same game.
But youre still on your mission, and youre still able to just ignore whatevers going on there, and just keep going on your way; and sometimes youll have objectives in these public areas, where youll have to complete some mission objective there. Or sometimes you might just be travelling through them, and youre like Oh, theres a sweet public event going on; Im going to stop and go check that out, and maybe youll meet some new friends, and hang out with them for a while, or whatever else, but then you can go back to your mission if you want to.
The Fallen that we were fighting in the E3 demo are from the House of Devils; theyre just one of the Houses of The Fallen, and not one of the houses are friendly to each other. So youll get a chance to learn more about those relationships between the characters, and between the combatant races over time.
AusGamers: So from the perspective of no UI, is that a huge challenge to have the player be able to actively obtain quests and drop-in/drop-out with other players? How did you guys approach that without being cumbersome to the visual side for the player?
Chris: Id say no UI is our goal, in the sense that we dont want to put anything in there that takes players out of the experience. So that means that when you go into a public area, theres no UI saying Do you want to enter the public area, yes or no?; if you are entering the area, you are entering the area.
This is quite a strong indication that custom loadouts are going to be used in mutliplayer. I am guessing this could upset a few of the long term Halo guys who did not enjoy the 'randomness' of not knowing what exactly your opponent had at their disposal in multiplayer.Chris: The particular weapon youre talking about is the exotic machinegun, the Thunder Lord I think, so that particular weapon has a fairly linear upgrade path, but there are others that are much less linear in the game. Some of these upgrade trees have got choices, where youre going to have to decide Am I going to do this, or am I doing to do that?; you cant have all of the upgrades.
So for example: I could have a pulse rifle and say Well, do I want my pulse rifle to have more ammo capacity, so I can shoot for longer without reloading? Or do I want my reload time to be shorter, so I can reload more effectively? -- thats one example of a choice you might make that will change your playstyle. Some players might go Well, Im going to be going into competitive multiplayer a lot more often, so Im going to go one way, or I want a bigger clip, so I can go another way on a weapon.

Great interview with some excellent tidbits.
I don't see how this could be upsetting. Long term Halo fans aren't expecting Halo from Destiny, so they shouldn't be upset. Disappointed? Sure, because they'd like to see another arena-style shooter from Bungie.
While I am extremely excited for this game, I am already mentally preparing for this to be a Fall 2014 release at the minimum. Ambition and execution take time to sync up.
That sounds about right. Bungie has used betas quite a bit recently and given the newer platforms, they will need the data.Yeah I don't expect to see it before then, maybe a public beta in summer 2014.
I'm only pinning hopes on Destiny to be more engaging than what Halo 4 has offered. If that means less multiplayer and more co-op modes that I can steer towards, then color me excited.Yeah, just from loitering in some of the Halo threads on here it seems some people were pinning their hopes on Destiny after they fell out of love with Reach / H4, but it looks like this will not be the game for them.
For me it's all about the co-op story / random events. Competitive will be something I have a play with now and then but I will mostly be off adventuring with friends.
Great video, answered most of my questions. Thanks for posting that here, Duncan!Over at DBO we've posted an interview we did with Chris Butcher, Bungie Engineering Lead.
Right now Urk and DeeJ are doing an impromptu Q&A on our forum if you have a good question...

Really nice work. Just found your site, and I'm digging in now.
Who is excited for the new borderlands game.
That seamless private party to public event stuff sounds incredibly ambitious and could be pretty amazing if it works as designed. One of Bungie's overlooked strengths is this kind of cutting edge party and networking tech.
All I'm really hoping is that the story is more Marathon than Halo, and I'll be 100% on board.
When will we get the confirmation that space combat's in ?
This is the only news I'm waiting to fully join the hype train.
I mean, we can customize our own ship...
Right now this is my video of choice to show Destiny virgins:

Shoot me a link if you got something better.
The video above said it was not a space combat sim, so I am guessing no ship travel or customization. I think that will be reserved for quick travel from planet to planet.

It's not as extreme as Space Combat Sim or Quick Travel. There's a lot they could do in between. For example, they could offer an on rails ship combat system if they're so inclined. SWTOR used a system like this for it's space combat.
Well, I haven't watched DBO's interview yet, but ship customization was confirmed when the game was announced.
It will be interesting to see what they do. Announce stuff already!
Well, they certainly know people love customizing stuff, so I do hope they go crazy with it. Now I don't know if they mean space-ship stuff or just you regular "mounts."
I'm worried that its potential for future updates might be significantly limited due to its cross-gen nature - the first retail release will probably have to work on 4-gig 360s.
That, and the leaked ten-year plan being scheduled around "sequels" and major expansions.
Just got an email from Amazon saying the publisher changed the release date to June 30th.
The shooting looks more like Call of Duty than Halo. I'm worried![]()
Just because you can aim down the sights? This doesn't look like a twitch shooter.
