Destiny Gameplay Premiere

Nice catch, I was looking and I still missed it. Sounds like weapon drops will be from bosses/treasure caches, with ammo and maybe some currency from lower fodder.
I suspect fodder loot might have been (/was supposded to be) disabled for the demo, even if it's just resources, seeing how the boss (who looks like he crawled straight out of a 90s' comic book) dropped a lot of blue gems that looked like currency - that can't be boss exclusive, or the game would turn into a boss grind). This drop looked like it happened by accident, as I could only spot one, maybe two of those things popping out of dying stuff.

I REALLY hope Older Russia is the real kind of explorable terrain, not Halo 3 preview "you can totally go everywhere, if only the world's deadliest stream weren't on the way" kind.

I wonder if there will be any Marathon references/lore in this, even if it is just a small nod.
How could there not be? Bungie, and now 343, have been recycling Marathon content for two decades, at this point it would be messing with tradition.
Hell, Bungie has been using the BOB catchphrase "see you starside" to tease Destiny from the start, and if the Traveler really ends up being a moon converted into a spacecraft, then the circle will officially be complete.

I think so too tbh. From what I remember from the stage demo it seems as if ammo was infinite? At least for the player that was the POV angle. Which would make sense as running out would be a problem just like wiping to the boss would be.

Yeah. The start of the IGN preview got me pretty excited, but it's also kind of barren out there. I hope that open space is put to good use; lots of locations/dungeons/loot scattered on the landscape.

Love the avatar, BTW. RIP Bungie Grunts. :(

Didn't expect the scale ,it looks great!

I know! I really hope there are missions/enemies/treasure/loot/public events/etc out there and that you can really explore the are.

Love the avatar, BTW. RIP Bungie Grunts. :(

RIP Bungie designs. While some of 343s changes were decent, most changed things entirely too much. =/

Like, wtf happened to the avian looking Jackals with big creepy eyes? Instead we get piranha iguana Godzilla things..

343 has good artists, but they completely undid some of the philosophies and fiction behind some of the designs, and it wasn't for the better.

Thanks, I'm quite fond of it as well.

I hope there's some humor in the world of Destiny, because right now for such a supposedly "hopeful" setting, it's looking a tiiiiiny bit joyless and grim underneath all that heavily rehearsed witty banter.
At the very least I'd like a Warlock voice preset done by Joe Staten at his most squeaky.

Here's my proposal for a revised social control scheme:

Thanks in advance, Bunglers.

I don't think there's a problem with having a lot of barren space - you can traverse the landscape with those Star Wars looking ships.

I think it would actually be awesome to have very barren locations, and simply traveling around looking for ruins and points of interest.

It's a delicate balance.

Some games have a lot of barren exploration like Windwaker, some games like Skyrim have too much shit everywhere it distracts you from everything.

i like how the boss fights seem to have a strategy / destructible parts

the most annoying thing about borderlands(love those games) is that everything is a bullet sponge in co-op

I like the character designs, and something small that I really like is it seems you can lower your weapon; it just makes roaming around in between combat something that seems like a stroll to enjoy instead of always being at the ready to shoot a dude's face off.

I just hope the combat doesn't fall into a Borderlands number game of dwindling down health bars. Bungie excels so well at combat readability that I hope they continue that in Destiny.

Haven't been a halo fan since the first game, but this... this game, the music the feels! I love the vibe of this game, and I'm in day 1 on ps4!

I really like this game but I wish they would delay it a year and try to change it to take better advantage of the PS4 and Xbox One hardware. I feel like the 360/PS3 bit is holding it back. The next gen versions are really just enhanced texture packs and better at loading.

This is the one game I was banking on as a sure bet to win e3 as game of the show but it's not even top 3 or 5 for that matter. It just seems like an imposter, like if respawn just did a military shooter and didnt take it to the next level with their game mechanics design. Nothing about it seems new or ambitious, nothing wows me or looks better then something I've already played.

I reckon that this there's much more they aren't telling us about. I reckon they are taking a lot of other MMO elements and applying them to this too. Like those speedbike things. They are basically mounts, but futuristic. I'm sure people can sit on those and drive fast through the landscape if they wish. Riding through that landscape at high speed and running over crazy four-armed aliens would be awesome.

Halo Reach's space battles also give me hope of battling in space as you travel from one planet to another. This can allow for some awesome fights, and really show off the engine. If there's one thing that Bungie is good at, it's skyboxes.

PvP is probably just located on the last city, in like "training zones", or something similar. You walk in, and select some modes, and the game will matchmake you with some other players. The system will probably just be similar to halo's. All we need is a number next to your name for ranked and we are good to go. There could also be PvP for the aforementioned space battles, if they are in the game.

I don't know how it will be balanced, but I do hope for some sort of "classic" mode, with no extras, and just weapon drops. ADS does ruin the pace of shooters for me, but looking at most of the guns, it seems to be a moot point, as there isn't really that much recoil on them.

Damn, there is so many things we don't know about. Why do you do this to us bungie? We need more ViDocs, and we need them now!

I guess you could look at it this way, but hey, at least it's guaranteed to be the first game in the loot-based shooter subgenre with at least solid mechanics and design in all of its modes. That has to count for something.

But really, it's hard to judge just how new or ambitious it actually is when we're still at least a year (and a half?) away from launch and we know next to nothing about how the game's structure will even look like.
If the Older Russia bomb casually dropped during the demo IGN filmed means what it sounds like, we might be dealing with 8(+?) open world maps filled with procedurally generated quests? If that's "same old", then I'd like to hear some retro game recommendations, because I'd like to play this right now.

I find this statement a little misleading. You see, respawn made call of duty with vehicles. Thats nothing new in anyway. It was literally a ripoff of shadowrun but with drop in mechs.

I'm concerned a bit with (some?) enemies showing health bars.

I wonder if there will be any Marathon references/lore in this, even if it is just a small nod.

Bungie recently said that they aren't going to put any acknowledgement in towards Halo simply because they can't. I would be surprised if there wasn't at least one Marathon easter egg,

Honestly, I don't like the Halo franchise, but I came away from the Destiny demo really stoked. I'm definitely going to be buying this game.

2 things that got me sold:
1. Substantial weapon upgrades.
2. Public events. Only time I've seen this feature is Resident Evil 6 and that was used really well. Destiny appears to take it to a whole new level.

Nice to have someone good playing the game.

destinyslidegunignlon8rkij.gif

That part was fucking awesome.

Can someone gif the part where he is looking at the tarp covering the car and you see the birds shadow fly though it? Also the part where he slides away from the first boss and looks at him and you see the light shining on him and projecting his shadow onto the wall perfectly.

This game has some good shadow porn.

Has Bungie said anything about the console framerate/resolution?

No, but I'll assume 60fps and perhaps 1080p. The game looks GREAT, but it's probably not the most technically demanding game out there. It looks mostly amazing because of the art, not the technical stuff (which isn't bad either of course).

I could be wrong, but hey...

I really want to like this, especially since I love the art and open-world thing, but so far the black military-themed weapons (a six-shooter pistol, do we still need this really?) and glorified machine guns is such a disappointment it for me. I want more creative sci-fi guns with organic shit we've never seen before. These guys long ago made the needler, right?

Going to reserve judgement and keep my eye on this since this is just the start, and hopefully I'll find more to my liking, but underneath the cool aesthetics it just remains too "military" for me. I guess I'm asking the impossible.

I completely agree, which is why a part of me is hoping they're just holding off showing some of the more creative weapons, but we do know you can upgrade them which should make normal weapons less generic too.

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.

The global illumination was pretty amazing. Especially the change in color at the end of the demo, when the boss arrives.

I'd say that is what is going to happen.
Charge-up? Upgrade. Homing bullets? Upgrade. Explosive ammo? Upgrade.
Perhaps there will be more exotic weapons, Marathon and Halo both had those but i reckon they didn't want to show them off right now.

One video i linked earlier had weapon concepts and names, including "Fusion Rifle". Wonder what it is...

do we have a release date/month/year?

did Sony secure exclusive content? I don't remember why it was at their keynote

Yes, that was announced at the PS Meeting. At E3 they mentioned that they have a long term partnership with Activision/Bungie for Destiny.

I also hope there are more heavy sci-fi weapons, even the alien races seemed to have conventional weapons. It might be that they are opting for more conventional weaponry and mixing in the sci-fi elements with SPACE MAGIC. Which is okay, but I'd like some outside the box weapons as well. What we saw (revolver, heavy machinegun, sniper, rocket launcher) was pretty standard fare.

I reckon they showed us those, because they are the standard fare.
Anything odd and you put people off. And then people complain why we get only the standard stuff. And then some developer shows off alien weapons, and people don't like it... Indeed this happens with Halo, alien weapons are always less liked and used in general, even when they're good, just because they're alien weapons, or not projectile weapons at very least.
EDIT hell, odd, non-standard human weapons are underused and unliked: Grenade Launcher got cut from Reach->Halo 4 because it was underused. (Arguably the difficulty of using the weapon contributed to this, and its rarity, but i reckon they're lesser factors really.)

The Fallen were using some cool weapons that where firing some weird ghostly white projectiles.

Maybe I missed it somewhere but has it been talked about yet just how big of a playable area this game will have? And how that layout will exist? Will each planet be like one giant area or will each planet have sections broken up like borderlands?

I dont know the exact quote but someone from Bungie said in an interview that each location/planet would be the 2/3 the size of Halo Reach. Let me find the video

Edit
Heres the video. Starts at about 12:50 where he speaks of the size of Destiny

If Halo is anything to guess by, Bungie tends to favor larger scale environments over high framerate, so I wouldn't be surprised if it were sub-60fps. If they could do both that'd be sweet though.

That entire area, playable? Holy shit

Don't get too excited. He said "could be playable", but they haven't opened it yet. We'll see how the final game works, but I don't think it will be on that level of openness.

Also, people saying Early 2014 are way too optimistic. This is Mid/Holiday 2014 at best.

Fall 2014 seems doable (but then, if Halo 5 comes back to September release date would they want to go head to head?), Holiday 2014 for COD, a few months between each launch.

I agree, early 2014 is optimistic, we barely heard anything until a few months ago, remember in March it still seemed as if they were really early in development: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUxRTCTr7ic

So given that we are looking right now at least 6 areas that are roughly 2/3rd the total size of reach. That's pretty incredible. Unless most of that is empty space, then it would be a little less awesome.

Yes huge as hell. Earth alone has the areas of the Last City, Old Russia, Swamps of Chicago, The Mumbai push etc.
