DigitalFoundry: Hands-on with PS4 1080p 30fps...!!

Yup.

Why is the new kz only 30 fps when BF4 looks much better and still has double the frame rate.

I think the problem here (and will be somewhat brief) is that Sony first party studios are the ones who are more lost in programming to ps4, as there is nothing like ps3 and that's all they knew. The rest is well trained developers in x86 and amd gpus.

whole article smacks of FUD.
No it doesn't. The only issue is that people are reactionary.

When developers are doing behind closed door demos that aren't allowed to be filmed for very anticipated games and people question why that is, it's because of these kind of threads.

This must be the most ridiculous comparison I've seen in a long time.

Are we really going to compare a game like MK8 to games like Drive Club and Killzone: SF on graphical fidelity?

seriously?

Yeah I agree. The game that is 60FPS gets an instant win ticket. Until DriveClub has evolved enough to achieve that we have nothing to discuss.

Is their conclusion really that Xbox One had games running at 1080p60fps? They do know the Xbox One demos were all on beefy PCs with GTX 780s or something in them, right?

Pathetic.

I'm really starting to contemplate about switching my preorder from PS4 to X1 at launch. I just don't care about Sony's lineup, especially if the games are running at 30fps. Absolutely unacceptable for next gen. I never liked Killzone games because of the input lag and considered giving the new one a chance. Guess that's out of the question. The promise of a new Halo game @ 60fps is something MS has done right and in all honesty, it has me more hyped than anything Sony has hinted at.

Not gonna jump the shark and switch just yet, but I'm definitely leaning closer to making that decision.

It wouldn't be a stretch to say that DICE has a lot more resources with BF4 since they are going after COD. They also have more experience with multiple architectures and therefore architecture changes.

KZ will never hit BF or COD numbers, possibly even with a single console comparison. So there is no reason to put in that many resources.

Sony originally wanted to try and compete with MSFT and Halo; in the end, while KZ is an ok game, it just does not have the brand power to compete evenly Halo ( you won't see KZ books, movies, comics, action figures probably ever) so there was no reason to try and match Halo now either.

KZ at is best can be a showcase game for the system, like KZ2 originally was meant to be. It really isn't meant for much more greatness then that IMHO.

But it has 8GB GDDR5 RAM. Do you understand that? There is no reason I can think of why 99% of games shouldn't run at 60FPS with 8GB GDDR5 RAM backing it up.

God that 8gb announced sure has you annoyed. We get it. People were far too happy from a console going from 2gb to 4gb to 8gb. But you're pretty much in the minority of people who keep bringing it up. It was announced in February. It's June now. :P

If Microsoft really used PC's and added some extra FPS and increased resolution while doing so it would be near scandal.

It's been said numerous times in this thread, but it needs to be repeated until some people get it... to the general consumer and even typical hardcore gamer, the devs will see a more positive reaction out of improved visuals than they will from 60fps (except of course for highly competitive games)
It just seems a bit dis-ingenious to say on one hand your all for the hardcore gamer, and then expect them to be dazzled by pretty grafix at the expense of gameplay in my opinion.

Killzone 3 had an allright inputlag, about that Halo... we haven't even seen a single ingame picture ;)

They addressed that in the article they wrote about XBoxOne. Why do you think all of those games were running on a PC? You certainly didn't see pictures of every game doing that, because they weren't.

Do people really pay so little attention?

I think that's incredibly (incredibly) unlikely. If you can program SPEs, you can program a flat memory multi-core x86 / GPU architecture in your sleep. Think about it, this thing has caches and out-of-order execution. It's built for milquetoast programmers, frankly. (I'm not saying that this is a bad thing, btw)

Honestly, how many people will do a frame-by-frame check once the games are released?

Welp I knew this was coming.

Possibly.

Poor choice of course, IMO, it was quite flat visually. I quite liked the driving though.

I don't really see the point in bitching about image quality of demo of this type. Especially for launch games where final hardware either isn't available or hasn't been available for very long.

There could be a number of reasons for that. The might have had a better looking build, but that was less stable so instead of having the game crash every 5 seconds then went for a worse looking build that was more stable. Remember this was a "hand off" demo, so the player could do anything they want it (so it needs to be stable).

The whole point of these demos is to get a general feel about how the game PLAYS. If you liked the driving that's a good sign. If it still has such issues at launch then we can talk, but for now I wouldn't worry too much.

lol i know you guys are pulling our legs, right? What complex games are 1080p and 60fps on Wiiu? None. Please dont compare a racing game or a cartoony simple game to complex games like Killzone, Infamous, etc.... that taxes the system way more running 1080p, 30fps.

Im just saying. No wiiu games at launch were 1080p and even now you have a handful of simple games that are 1080p like on ps3. Ps4 is launching with 1080p games day 1. There is no comparison.

As you would say "im just saying"

I think someone should really clear up this misinformation in a dedicated thread or something because it comes up on every page in this thread .A lot of the xbox games like Forza and Ryse were on actual hardware and these were some of the more impressive games graphically on the Xbox one.

Correct, many developers have said the PS4 is much easier to develop for .

you are really going to be in for a rude awakening, especially if you are expecting a higher number of 60fps titles on xbone... you just have to look at the titles being talked about in the article and compare those to the types of titles shown on XBONE at 60fps..

60fps on PS4 >= 60fps on XBONE for third parties..
for first parties, I'm guessing the same types of games will have the same types of framerates between both consoles.

PS4 - 1080p, 30 FPS
Wii U - 1080p, 60 FPS

I'm just saying, that's either terrible coding, terrible design choices, or both. Turn down the graphics from a 10 to an 8 and double that framerate!

lol i know you guys are pulling our legs, right? What complex games are 1080p and 60fps on Wiiu? None. Please dont compare a racing game or a cartoony simple game to complex games like Killzone, Infamous, etc.... that taxes the system way more running 1080p, 30fps.

BF4 was running on PC...

Multiple sources confirmed that the XB1 demo was running on the dev-kit hardware, and we'll see the same (if not better) quality and performance on the PS4 version. The problem isn't the hardware on either side of the fence. The problem (re: the performance on these first-party titles) is the studios themselves adjusting a vision into a technically proficient product. There's plenty of time for that to happen, but being less than six months out and having showings like this, there's some understandable trepidation.

I bet they don't, neither do i really.

I would think the popularity of CoD proves that 60fps or close to that frame rate is noticed by the masses. Even if they don't realize a game is 60fps, I've heard from more than enough people that they can feel the difference.

Here you go. Looks just as, if not more impressive on the big screen.

Yes because a streaming youtube video is a great source to determine picture quality...

You're not really helping your cause.

Whats good ?
It was expect that KI and Forza would be 60fps .
One is a fighting game and the other is a sim both types of games where 60fps this gen .
I would love for all of Sony games to be 60fps but with all multi games going to be mostly the same it's easy to see why they would chose eye candy for there games .

That's right, there is absolutely nothing good about anything regarding the Xbone, especially the software.

I didn't expect Halo to be 60fps, so that's a pleasent surprise even if I don't plan to purchase the system. Again, IMO BF4 proved that a great looking game can be 1080p60.

It's crazy to think that Sucker Punch went from creating the worst looking PS3 exclusives to leap frogging Guerilla to create the best looking PS4 launch game.

Yup.

Why is the new kz only 30 fps when BF4 looks much better and still has double the frame rate.

I highly contest your use of "much better" here. IMHO Killzone was the better looking title.. I can't really quantify, but yeah, KZ looked to have more going on in the demo than BF4.

Do you have a gaming rig? Thats the platform you invest in for 60 fps games, not consoles.

Yeah these trolls are insane on here. Wiiu didnt release with any 1080p native games to begin with and the ones they have now are a handful of non taxing, simple games in 1080p just like the Ps3 1080p games lol. Ps4 is launching with 1080p off the jump so we all know those 1080p/60fps beasts are coming soon enough.

No argument here we all know wiiu wont be doing complex games 1080p, 60fps or 1080p period only little kiddy games. Sorry man its the truth. You cant compare the complexity of a killzone to say mario Kart racing.

Listen to the latest Bombcast. They talk about Dead Rising 3 having a VERY unsteady framerate. It is just to be expected at this point in development.

EA said PCs specced to run at consoles levels, in a interview. And that we can expect them to look close to that in the final build.

I don't mind games being 30 fps. I would like to eliminate dipping below that though. If we could just keep a solid lock on 30 I'd be happy with it.
Thats the issue though. Many games that are "locked" at 30the fps will have dips to 25 or so. Not many know that bayonetta on xbox drops to 50 fps. Why? Its better tolerated. I guess thats where my opinion differs from most. I will live with 60 fps with occasional drops to 50. In contrast, take a game like kz3. When that sucker hits 25 fps, you really feel it.

I know you're just trolling as usual.

The thing is that I think 60FPS is so important that if I have to choose which game I think looks better (like for example MK8 and DC) I have to give the game that's 60FPS so significant preference than in this case I would rate Mario Kart 8 over DriveClub.

Honestly, how many people will do a frame-by-frame check once the games are released?

People who would bother complaining about it...?

Why not wait then? If you don't like the line-up just don't buy the console at launch.

I don't like the PS4 launch line-up so I will buy it in maybe two years.

No. There is plenty of time for improvement. The more developed, but likely less stable code has yet to be seen.

People need to relax. These are nowhere near completed titles. If they were being released next week, I'd say be very worried. They have ~5 months to get this together.

RELAX

While I am not freaking out like some, I dont see a whole lot of time left for the launch titles. 3 months until packaging and shipping. That is not much time to troubleshoot technical issues, perform QA, and optimize for hardware. It sounds like none of this has been completed at this point.
