Digital Foundry tech analysis: Destiny

What really sold me was the lighting and overall fidelity considering the scale. Bungie has never been known for visual fidelity outright but they've done a great deal here (esp. considering the non-linear nature).

Yeah, I guess I just need to shut the fuck up and get used to never buy a console again. I just have to live with that most gamers are fine with (<)30 Performance and go with PC only. That's not an sarcastic comment btw, it is what it is. I'll try to hold my tears from now on and shut up.

Yes kindly do that and spare us the incessant complaints about how 30fps is so unworthy of existence.

Looks good but I'd rather have a game like MAG, now that's a massive shooter that could really benefit for PS4-XB1-PC hardware. Such an underrated game, it was so awesome until they patched in some broken recoil bs.

Keep up the good work Bungie, I'm liking what I'm seeing so far.

Get PlanetSide 2 on PS4 and PC.

That is a massive action game. It does however feature vehicles rather than mostly infrantry like MAG was and it's also not set in a modern setting.

wow at pics above this post, looks amazing, first-wave title !

The 30 and 60 fps comments and one-liners are going to get annoying rather soon, I don't know what people expected from launch titles with this kind of graphics and IQ.

I play PlanetSide 2, it burns my overclocked 3570K and whatever GPU I throw at it, I'm skeptical about its performance on PS4, if it's constant 30 fps even in massive firefights with the same graphics as the PC version I'll eat my hat and pack up my PC beaten by $399 small console.

This is not a launch title, far from it. Spring/summer next year, earliest.
Cross-gen though, so visuals will suffer from that.

They're massively optimising it on the PS4 at the moment. It basically didn't support multi core CPUs so it doesn't take advantage of modern CPUs. After it's all fixed up those changes will be rolled in to the PC version.

granted, this is only talk so far, but the devs said they´re doing some serious optimizing for the multicore ps4 and that the pc will also benefit from that.

edit: beaten...

[edit]I also wonder why MS didn't get dibs; I thought they get first choice on every new Bungie game?

As I understand it, Microsoft had right of first refusal on publishing Bungie's new game/franchise. When Bungie started looking for a publisher for Destiny in ~2009, they had to go to Microsoft first and Microsoft passed on it.

Actual transcript:

Bungie: "Here's the deal, yo: we want Destiny to ship on multiple platforms and we want to keep ownership of the IP. Ya dig?"
Microsoft: "How delightfully amusing! Look at the little independent studio that came crawling back asking for money! And so demanding! Mulit-platform games don't sell systems, you fools. Your contractual obligation has been fulfilled; there's the door."
Bungie: "Word. Activision, we can talk now. Same terms, dawg."
Activision: (panting) "Woof!"

I'm not interested in this game at all. But I think it looks very good. Lighting, shadows and material work are first rate. LOL @ people who think this could be current gen.

Aside from the character models which can be excused because of cross-gen, the game looks good to me.

Stil cant believe people are happy at the game running at 30fps on the next gen.60fps should be the base rate for xbone ps4.

Really?

In huge firefights or something?

I was under the impression that Plenetside 2 runs pretty great all things considered. Although I haven't witnessed any of the exceptionally large battles.

I've lost count of how many times I've had to explain that 60fps isn't a set level of performance, that it's a moving goal that developers can hit on any hardware if they choose to do so. If you don't think 30fps is at least adequate, then console gaming is not for you.

Why not?? Most of the big shooters are 60fps or will be next gen..
Some dev's finally starting to see the importance of 60fps, and i hope Bungie does to

Now this is sweet news.

It must be the scale or something, but plenty of the big shooters seem to be targeting 60fps. eg. Titanfall, Halo, Battlefield 4, CoD.

30 should be fine, but it does make Destiny the odd man out.

Nothing else has the scale of Destiny. It has more in common with RPGs than it does other shooters. Bungie's 30fps games have also always been a bit more responsive than others' so I don't think it'll be a problem here.

Off topic, but is Mag still active at all? The game is $5 at EB Games and for that price it's worth trying. I've read that frequent updates made the community nosedive, but servers seem to still be up and running (?) It'd be neat to try a massive online game before Destiny comes out.

1080p / 60fps => no
Not impressed.

Next Gen should be this first. Then you had the rest so you can have the best looking game. Why they just don't start with the basics?

For the people comparing it to TitanFall, saying how it's not 60 FPS.

It's a completely different game. This is going to feature large, massive worlds, with seamless drop in and drop out. During public events, you're going to have many different fireteams of 3+ people all playing at once. It's amazing they can lock it at 30 FPS.

Plus, remember, it's current gen game bumped upto next gen. Destiny 2 will be the real "looker" of the bunch when it comes in 2016 or whatever.

There will still be 30fps games on consoles in 20 years time (assuming we still have consoles then), as the hardware gets better, the graphics get better and cancel each other out, its the way its always been and i never understand why people can't get that.

No, 30FPS come to an end now and in the coming years thanks to VR. Even you guys who love 30FPS so dearly won't be satisfied with a headtracking system @30FPS. :)

Dare I say I hate fake volumetrics (entity placed) and screen space sun shafts? Especially when they are beating the brow of the viewer with them... I miss the days when sun shafts were subtle (like crysis).

They always look so cheap these days.

Was UT99 60 fps on the majority of PC's back when it was released?
Was Quake 3?
Was Halo 2 on the original Xbox?

They weren't. (Of course there were rigs at that time which could run them at 60 fps)

Did the "crappy" 30 fps stop these games from becoming the most played multiplayer games ever?

I don't think so.

But then the spraying-fast-casual COD happened and the world has changed.

I don't mean that 60 fps isn't good. Sure it is. But I rather choose a decent resolution, good textures, turbulence effects like APEX, destruction, physix and tons of different effects.

I dont know a person who played Quake or UT in 30fps.

A mouse controlled FPS in less than 60fps locked is unplayable. Getting motion sick just thinking about it.

Yep, i've played Medal of Honor:Allied Assault from time to time in around 30fps on more demanding maps and with higher player count [Crossroads] and it annoyed me to hell, but Quake and UT games were very scalable, You could just turn some options off and they run perfectly fine over 60fps.
