Death Stranding 2: On The Beach - PS5/PS5 Pro - Digital Foundry Tech Review

But Horizon has terrible cutscenes and dialogue.
It was straight up the open world with the best models and digital acting before ds2 came out...what?

Hell until horizon 3 or witcher 4 is gonna come out, fw still gonna have the best rpg real time chitchat between npcs tech ever seen in a game...

Dialogue writing is personal, some people find kojima cringe as a whole fuck and nonsensical, some people find horizon dull and boring.

This is a well-made comparison video.
We can see that the PS5 Pro is almost equivalent to the PS5's quality mode.
The PS5 version's performance mode also looks great with cleverly reduced settings.

About 5 hours in so far (still in Mexico - PS5 Pro).

It's a good looking game for sure but I wouldn't say that it's top 5 or anything like that. The cutscenes certainly look amazing but those models aren't used in general gameplay. Sometimes you do catch a glimpse of Sams face during gameplay and it breaks the illusion a bit. Low light scenarios like dusk and night time look really flat and dull and I'm not impressed with the jungle areas at all, it looks very last gen if I'm being honest.

The opening scene upon that hill looking out over the sun drenched crags of Mexico definitely sets your expectations too high, it doesn't carry that level of wow factor for much longer beyond that point.

All that being said, it's such a joy to play, I really love it from a gameplay perspective so far.

The character models in DS2 are amazing.
I could probably spend 10+ hours playing in photo mode lol.

Stunning, we're finally leaving the uncanny valley.

What impresses me more, however, is the facial animations.

My only complaint going from playing on my PC to this is the issues with foliage, theres some strange blurriness I cant quite put my finger on when I pan the camera. I guess its image break up. Ive never really noticed it before. Apart from that the game looks amazing.
This is why I think its using PSSR. I've seen this foliage artifacting in many games using pssr like Dragons Dogma 2, SW Jedi Survivor, and Avatar

So one of Digital foundry's takes is the very highly detailed rubble and rocks on the ground. And to think some see our hobby as extremely nerdy... How wrong they are lol. ;)

Keep going, because its easily the best looking thing I've seen on the Pro. Its not just one thing though, its not like its using a certain technology or the density of the geometric detail is unparalleled. Its the overall accumulative effect of world class direction, art-direction, animation, and small but impactful details.

The more I play the more I realize those graphical heights at the very beginning of DS2 are not matched throughout the game. It looks really nice but not quite "omg this is next gen". Slimey is right that in order to get those visuals it couldn't have been a 1440p/60 fps targeted game ...its no hellblade 2 but there are times where it does seem on the level of AC Shadows though that may be due to Kojimas Productions eye for artistic choices.

It trades blows with Forbidden West, which is a 2022 cross gen game ....not as impressive when considering that. Now, if it had RTGi? Would definitely have elevated it. That's why the highs of AC Shadows are higher than this imo
