Nintendo to announce secret “brand-new types of games” for Wii U soon

That does raise my hopes though. All the strange quirky wii games I've enjoyed only had any shot at existing because the platform was already successful.

Also both wii sports games were genuinely fun.

Don't get me wrong, I want to see the Wii U succeed, but I'm not very excited for the announcement itself. If they're waiting closer to release date to presumably stave off competition, I can't see it being some super innovative use of the gamepad....since neither competitor has a gamepad.

NFC is good prediction which did not immediately come to mind while reading the OP. I always thought Nintendo had something big planned for that feature to really show its significance. The Pokemon Rumble game did not exactly live up to my vague expectations. We'll see...

Yeah I've been waiting for some sort announcement that involves NFC. If Nintendo implemented NFC in the controller, they must have some good ideas of what to use it for.

Iwata said exactly the same thing in June 2012, the part about new ideas not revealed to prevent competition copies.

Why is Nintendo always so paranoid about people stealing their game ideas? When was the last time anyone successfully cloned any of their games? When has that ever hurt the game they cloned? When was the last time Nintendo had such a revolutionary idea that people were clamoring to clone it and bring it to market before them?

He says "non-traditional is coming", yet I here I sit, wagging my tail, expecting traditional games. Like a poor, hungry puppy.

This is ridiculous.

Why didn't they show these "secret awesome games" at the biggest show in the world?

What a stupid mistake. I'm not going to get my hopes up again.

Analog stick, rumble, shoulder buttons, triggers, motion controls, touch screen controlled gaming, etc.

Pokemon, Mario, SSB, Zelda, Wii Sports, Wii Fit, etc. Have all spawned clones that had varying degrees of success.

Although the only one I can think of that did it before them was the analog stick.

If you read he said because they wouldn't appeal to traditional gamers and that is who mainly is at E3....

Probably something more like the Wii ___ series to try and convince people how great the gamepad is. As much as people may rag on it, Nintendo does need to do something completely out of the box if they want any chance of WiiU being a success. Now why Nintendo wouldn't actually show said new games on the biggest stage of the year is somewhat mind boggling, so hopefully this isn't just lip service of Iwata hoping to god Mario and DK save the system this holiday

My guess is a line of eshop games that are free to play or very cheap. Wii sports sold individually, board games, pictionairy, along with wii party u's 29.99 eshop price point vs 39.99 in stores.

This is my guess.

Also let's not forget Iwata promised the exact same thing for the 3DS and said they were making new types of games to appeal to the casual audience and years later none of those games have surfaced. Many of Iwata's claims(learning from mistakes, it'll be different for sure) have ended up being bullshit.

Also I'm sure everyone is watching Nintendo waiting to copy them just like last year when obviously they were waiting to show off the Wii U OS so Sony and MS wouldn't copy their amazing 15 second OS loading features

For instance we saw MS is working on a Wii Sports Resort ripp off with an island that looks shamelessly close to the one from Nintendo. A Wii Sports sequel is obviously worked on for Wii U, and you can tell anything good in it will be replicated on other consoles. Better wait indeed then.

MS has smartglass and sony has vita. If they've managed to find a legitimately cool 2nd screen game mechanic that becomes a noteworthy hit, the other consoles do have the ability to copy it, even if only in the "feature checklist" sense and not an out-of-the-box one.

Why would they spill their ideas and games? To please GAF? I'm sure that's pretty low on their priority list.

Probably F2P board games... Reskins with game specific modifications costing about $1-$5... Imagine all the chess variants...

Or, you know... The games they've been mentioning having trouble staffing due to HD development... Let's be honest, the games they've shown look like Wii games running in HD with higher resolution textures and few effects added...

...probably chess...

Besides Wii Party and Pikmin 3, which games?

Lol I just can't get hyped for Nintendo's games anymore. Their vision is completely out of touch with the current gaming reality.

I dunno. Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, Luigi's Mansion 2,and 3D Land all killing it on the 3DS tell me otherwise. What exactly is the current gaming reality? I shit on Nintendo for failed promises and terrible management, but their vision of gaming is the one thing I think they have right.

Mario, DK and their other mini game packages.

DK is a 2d platformer? How exactly did you expect it to look? And yes their mini game collections have always looked bad

Somehow, I expect everyone to be disappointed even if you're not expecting anything big. I'm guessing their F2P model or an environment similar to Google Play or iTunes solely for gaming apps. Whatever it is, I'm not looking forward to it.

Just ring up Crytek UK and tell them you want to fund the rest of TimeSplitter 4's cancelled development and do the same for Double-Fine and Psychonauts 2 and BAM you got your library variety with minimal work and maximum forum meltdowns.

Not that anyone will buy those games per say, but that's for Nintendo to worry about and me to remain selfishly apathetic about while I play them.

What if it was a subscription based wii sports with online play, a little mmo hub world of mii's, tournaments and stuff etc. could be 6.99 a month.

Oddly enough this may fit with Nintendo's announcement of changing their marketing curve before E3. From their perspective, what they're doing probably makes more sense.

Reassure core gamers who evidently think Nintendo is literally making no Wii U games by showing off Mario Kart, Smash Bros. Then keep the drip of Wii U news going steadily through the year but not really in sync with typical channels in the game industry.

They say they planned to start with core gamers, yet they're a year late with those, never mind casual or new types of games.

Doesn't matter what they plan, when they execute this badly

The current gaming reality is cooperating with 3rd parties, having powerful systems and making games appealing to the core gaming audience instead of their own specific niche fanbase. If they were a software developer, their approach is fine but as a hardware developer you can't remain so closed off. If you aren't a fan of Nintendo games the console is literally worthless, but on Xbox One if I ain't a fan of Microsoft 1st parties there are many more titles for me to play. They already failed this generation in my eyes by releasing yet another gimmicky and underpowered system.
