Speculation: Could Cerny Lead Sony's Secret JRPG Project (1st Party Answer to FF)?

So Verendus is trustable now?
I think he was wrong with some things for E3, why should we trust him now with all things?

Didn't he even say that the FFvsXIII blow out will be before E3? It's not even exclusive as well. And afaik he also said KHIII is in development, but KH 2.5 will be revealed before that.

Could someone show all his right predictions?

Cerny what a visionary:

Check your eyes, they don't look alike at all.

An AAA JRPG with Cerny as an advisor could be huge. It would be quite impressive from a technical stand of view for sure. And current Sony is amazing as hell, so a game like this could be the JRPG we were waiting for.

Anyway, is Verendus a credible source? Is he a confirmed insider? I would love if he was right, of course. JRPGs need a presence on consoles again, and what better way to do that than a console maker doing a AAA one.

The admins/mods require people that are claiming to have inside information to verify whether they're legit and ban them if they aren't. So given that he's still around, I would assume that yes, he has some credible sources.

Anyway, surely Unannounced JRPG 1 is Demon's Souls 2. It's been rumoured way too much to just be something someone made up.

Unannounced JRPG 2 is anyone's guess but we do know that Level 5 are working on something for the PS4, so that could very well be it.

The dude seems to really love the JRPG genre, so that can be a trigger for an internally developed RPG game. That said, don't get me wrong I love what Cerny is doing with the PS4, but can somebody explain to me what is going on with Knack? Why does it looks like a C-Tier movie tie in game. I truly am trying to give this game a chance, but I am baffled every time I see a video, this game is mediocre in all facets. It has allmost no redeeming quality's whatsoever! WTF?

Why would they need an answer to Final Fantasy? They already have Final Fantasy. And new JRPG franchises aren't exactly sweeping the world by storm.

I agree. White Knight Chronicles (and sequel) sounds like the first attempt to emulate final fantasy per the description.

Yes, they don't need to answer to Final Fantasy, they need to bring Japanese people back to home consoles. This reason alone justifies Sony funding a AAA Jrpg.

I'm surprised Sony hasn't tried to make a WRPG. The community of that genre is on PC and Xbox. They should try to draw some of those gamers to PS.

Gorilla Games new IP is rumored to be a WRPG, but who knows. I agree that Sony really needs to have a WRPG under their belt. It's the one genre they have yet to dabble in.

I'd love to see SSM or SCEJ do a AAA rpg. Give it aesthetics around FF12 or so. Not overly anime, not overly dudebro. Make the gameplay, battles and exploration big parts, with some sort of online bazaar for trading with other players. Hell, they could make their own Monster Hunter style thing with less dinosaur murdering and less eyesore graphics.

But probably all just a dream.

All i can do is this:

If it has an artstyle remotely similar to Knack, I will be sorely disappointed. Knack is the most visually uninteresting thing I've seen out of SCEJ in awhile.

Get Team ICO's artists on it.

The irony of this post is that one of Team Ico's artists has worked on Knack.:)
But i agree that they need to get Team Ico's artists to work on this project even the ones that no longer work for them like concept artists Hitoshi Niwa and Shumpei Suzuki (from SOTC).If these JRPG projects are as ambitious as Verendus is saying then they need to get as many people as possible.
But they really need some good project managers before anything else.

Sony needs to contract Yasumi Matsuno and get that Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy Tactics flavour storytelling.
I rather it's Matsuno

I know this means nothing but judging from Matsuno's fb account he seems to hang out a lot lately with SCEJ staff.

I saw a panel thing Cerny did with some guy from EA and he said that The Legend of Dragoon made him cry.

Yeah he definitely implied a couple of times in the past that he is at least a fan of the genre.I'd definitely want someone as passionate as him on a project like this.

Doesn't Sony own Aniplex and thus have the rights to a lot of anime?

A JRPG based on an old hit or new anime series could be big.

I still think the next Everquest will be huge on the PS4.

Personally I feel the jrpg genre got off to a slow start this gen due to the difficulty in translating the pre-rendered backgrounds and large scale worlds etc which square has used as an excuse previously, also the allure of the western profits made the jrpg devs neglect their fanbase and ideologies to attempt western games... Basically the fans are their it's just the games arnt in abundance like previous gens, it's not a dead genre by a long shot and with Sonys current strategies I could really see a 1st party AAA jrpg being in the works!

I have to say, at the moment I don't plan on getting either console. But if a truly great JRPG comes out I will buy the console for it.

He worked on Sonic 2, Crash Bandicoot 1-3 and Jak & Daxter 1. He was also a design consultant on the PS1 Spyro games, Uncharted 1, God of War 3 and a bunch of Ratchet & Clank games.

I have faith in Cerny.

I have no faith in SCEJ besides PD though, as they are worthless and take forever to get exactly nothing of value out the door.

So Cerny is great at platformers...

Hmmm, platformers and RPG...

TOMBA incoming!

What would make a Sony First party RPG any different to the hoards im of decent RPGs made by other j-Developers?

I just can't comprehend how you could make one stand our from the crowd

How does Tokyo Jungle stand out in the survival genre?

They could try to make a 'realistic world' type of jrpg a la ff15.

I know what you mean but FFXV's world and characters are not realistic IMO.They are more stylized than something you might see from a ND game for example.

I'd like the world itself to be open world though.

Level 5 seems really busy dating Nintendo right now, I think it might be unlikely that they have anything huge waiting in the wings for PS4.

Even then, Hino's insistence on helming games and writing stories almost guarantees the game will be short of amazing. He's a brilliant businessman though.

Am I the only one that remembers Legend of Dragoon being pretty mediocre? I'd rather see Sony bring back Arc the Lad or Dark Cloud than Dragoon.

Nope. I don't get the love for this title. It was pretty much Sony's answer to FF, except that it had way less depth, shitty characters and a dreadful combat system. CG cutscenes were good though, especially considering that back then Square was in its own league in this respect.

Sounds like wishful thinking. Hino already said earlier this year that they're working on a PS4 game.

I care less if it's being made and more that it would be good or distinctive.

I'm going to go negative mode for a bit:

* Legend of Dragoon was mediocre at best. I remember renting it back in the day and being too bored to keep playing before bringing it back.

* If Knack is anything to go by, I have serious doubts about how a Cerny led JRPG would turn out.

POSITIVE MODE ENGAGED:

I am curious to see how a Western led JRPG would turn out. I'm surprised we haven't seen more takes on it. Consider me interested if true.
