Pacific Rim |OT| Apocalypse Never

Yo, Pacific Rim was sooooo animay

but it was damn good, best blockbuster I seen this summer. Invests you in the human characters and their personal struggles, makes you care more about the big robot smashing, and said robot smashing is awesome, coherently filmed and delivered with maximum impact.

I went to my only regal theater and they had no idea what I was talking about in regard to the poster.

Disappointment. :/

Special effects, action were wonderful, rest of the movie was garbage. Pacing was terrible. I was seriously bored halfway through. The script was soap opera level dreck. But hey, eat it up with a spoon.

Just caught the flick with my son

FUCKING INCREDIBLE

FutureVoids post nails it and the Kaiju and their battles were actually fucking scary. Dat Del Toro touch.

Just saw it. Pretty much exactly what it says on the tin. Great fun, and probably the best 3D I've seen in a film by a country mile. It looked spectacular. They got the weight of the action scenes locked down.

Story-wise, it was about as cliched as it gets, with a side-helping of Del Toro oddness sprinkled throughout. Aside from a few cheesy-as-almighty-fuck moments, It was a pretty cool movie. The original score was utterly forgettable, though.

Yeah...and I love how brutal the fights were in this movie. You could tell the pilots are desperately doing everything they can just to win a fight.

It was AMAAAAAAAZING! Everything I had hoped for. The right amount of cheesy fun and dramatic action. So want to go another time. BFI IMAX was completely packed.

Snagged some posters, even my mom specifically asked for one after the movie was over.

Oh hey, I was there just now. What showing did you go to? I went to the 3pm one.

I asked my friend if he was going to see Pacific Rim

He replied "not in this life time."

I asked why and he called Pacific Rim childish--said he grew up 10 years ago. Then he gave a list of movies that he still had to watch which included Hangover pt. 3 and Grown Ups 2.

I don't know why I'm friends with him.

Take a whole list of quotes from the reviews for GU2. What does he even say to that? "I grew up 10 years ago! CHOCOLATE WASTEEEEDDD!!"

Yeah...and I love how brutal the fights was in this movie. You could tell the pilot are desperately doing everything they can just to win a fight.

It goes back to that David vs Goliath, the little guy fighting against the big ones. 3 dudes in a boat vs Jaws, a single X-Wing piloted by a guy "a little short to be a stormtropper" against the evil empire and their giant Death Star, or like every James Cameron movie from Titanic to Aliens where the mighty fall. It's the struggle, that scrappy underdog facing failure in the face and somehow overcoming it.

I mean, Man of Steel had no time for Clark Kent, they had to show how awesome and handsome and christ-like and all-powerful Superman was, shit gets smashed up, no stakes, no personal investment in the character. Transformers movies look like two Slinkies rolled together in a ball and the camera is cutting and shaking because shit is intense or whatever, two equal forces going on and on and on. Who wins? Who cares!?

Pacific Rim's robots move with the slow, sluggish power benefitting their size, backed by humans who have personal struggles of their own, trying to do the impossible in the face of armageddon.

Just a big ol' ball of optimistic fun, cliches and all.

It pains me when children try so hard to be adults that they lose their ability to enjoy childish things.

Yes, yes... Because getting pissed on by a large animal in your house is the true mark of a mature comedy.

I understand if a film isn't to a person's taste, but come on. Watching films on the basis of supposed maturity is such a silly attitude.

Tell him to grow the fuck up.

Hey guys, going to watch this:

To get me into the mood before I go check out Pacific Rim. I'm giving myself a legit Creature Double Feature.

Just curious, what trailers did you guys see before the movie?

-Gravity(which some kid thought looked dumb...fuck you, kid)
-Marky Mark/Denzel Washington film aimed squarely at my dad's demographic
-Captain Philips, Die Hard on a boat starring Tom Hanks
-Seventh Son, looks like one of those kinda-crummy movies they shit out in the early months of the year so nobody will ever know

I think there was another one...

The trailers I saw...

  • Thor: The Dark World (Looks awful and boring and OOOH LOOK AT THE PRETTY LIGHTS!)
  • 2 Guns (Looks like a fun buddy cop sorta film. Denzel Washington is in it.)
  • Captain Philips (As said before, Die Hard on a boat. Looks jingoistic.)
  • Gravity (That trailer always scares me. :( Film looks good if it's the same quality as the trailer.)
  • The Wolverine (This film looks like it was directed by someone who REALLY likes Japan and isn't Japanese. )
  • This one film about a guy becoming a corporate pawn. It looks really fucking boring.
  • 300: The Rise of the Empire (It looks sooooo bad.)

Wow, my theater had a lot of trailers.

Got my IMAX poster last night at the screening, swung by another theater during lunch and scooped up the Shinkawa print. I kind of wish the Shinkawa print was on the same stock/size as the IMAX poster.

Either way, they are awesome free goodies, so no complaining!

I've noticed some people and my friends say it was a bit scary, and I have to agree. The kaiju are relentless, and brilliantly designed. There's a great sense of desperation.

Oh hey, I was there just now. What showing did you go to? I went to the 3pm one.

6 pm. Our screening stopped for a false alarm, and I thought it was part of the thing actually like some amusement park :p Like some kaiju had attacked the cinema. Would be so awesome if a Kaiju head burst through the side of the auditorium XD

I've never actually seen Final Wars (fell off Godzilla when the American movie came out :lol) but isn't it supposed to be pretty bad?

Zonic

Gives all the fucks
Were the posters only given out at theaters with IMAX? I don't have any near me (despite having the D-Box and 3D at the theater closest to mine) and really wanna get a hold of at least the Shinkawa poster.

Best acting performance:
that little girl who played young Mako. That was a very important scene that detailed one of the protagonist's big personal conflicts, and a lesser acting performance could have screwed it up, but that little girl did it just about perfectly. No fake movie crying like a lotta kids, her slow turn around and realization that it was over, the way she stumbled out of that alley, all great

Final poster from Odd City.
Hmm?

Isn't this the final poster from Odd City? I actually prefer it, and will definitely try to get it for myself:

Variant:

I'm not sure if I like the Regular or the Variant version better, though. The Variant will be more rare [75 as opposed to 175], but I think I like the blue/grey color scheme in the Regular version better.

I'm still trying to track down the poster drawn by Yoji Shinkawa. Ebay is being a pain about shipping to Canada. -_-
