Steam Sale - (Overlooked) Indie Game Deals Discussion Thread

Don't worry Toma! Reus got my vote

Towns isn't my kind of game, I didn't like the Tropico demo, and Reus seems like the kind of unique indie experience that got me interested in Steam and PC gaming in the first place

I didn't like the demo for Tropico 3 myself but ended up loving the full game. Been meaning to play through 4, which I think (?) I own on Steam.

Tropico is a city building management sim, Towns is half Sandbox, half village sim and Reus is a god game with puzzle elements. Although all are great, I'd love to see Reus winning this.

I already own Reus (of course) but I sent out a call to all my friends to vote for it. It's a great game!

Of course, pretty sure it's going to end up as a daily since one of the summer cards is of Reus. But more chances for people to buy it would be wonderful.

Probably super duper late on this, but I just now noticed the thread title typo.

I don't know about you, but I'm certainly here for the Stearn sale. I'll also recommend:

They Bleed Pixels - $2.49 (75% off)

http://store.steampowered.com/app/211260/

This is a really damn good platformer. Good, but also devious, unforgiving, and rage-inducing. After every stage I finish, I can typically be heard muttering something about how ridiculous that shit just was. Even so, I'm almost immediately ready to jump back in. The controls are actually really tight, and the enemies pretty creative and dangerous. The soundtrack remains interesting throughout, and the fat pixel art is really appealing (and incredibly gory). It is highly reminiscent of Super Meat Boy - and just as good, despite the claims of past threads ;)

I'll also second the Reciever mention above. FPS roguelike with ultra-detailed gun mechanics and future robots and mindkills. Yes.

I'd like to recommend Receiver which is on sale for $2.99

Great gunplay and how you treat the guns is realistic. It was part of a seven day FPS game jam challenge last year and the developers added some content to it and, through Greenlight, got it on Steam.

Speaking of that game jam, does anyone know where to find the other games that were made during it? The official site has been replaced with this year's upcoming event so I don't think they are hosting them on there anymore.
I'd like to know this too

How do I miss They Bleed Pixels? I love games like that (League of Evil, SMB, etc.) Thanks for the recommendation

I'm interested in Receiver but 1) isn't short? and 2) the only enemies are turrets and drones?
If it's the dev's going to add more content, I'd get it

Interesting Bundle deals for Steam Indies:

Yz5BNiq.png

Humble Weekly Bundle - 3$
If you can stomach the low resolution for the older Geneforge and Avernum games, they are among the best RPGs (sorry for the hyperbole, but.. its true) that arent Infinity Engine games. Especially the Geneforge series is a favourite of mine with a huge map, lots of loot and hidden secrets, an engaging summoning system, oldschool challenging situations, focus on player decisions (fight? talk? sneak?), multiple endings and great lore.
People really should take note of this bundle, it probably has the most value for any bundle available during this sale period. Literally hundreds of hours of quality RPG gameplay. As anyone can easily see though, the graphics aspect is definitely lacking in Spiderweb Software games, the story/characters/gameplay is most definitely NOT lacking in quality. It is classic old school role-playing at its best. This is the best deal yet on their games, anyone interested in RPGs or indie games should really really pick this one up for the average price. I sure hope my comments here cause someone to enjoy these great games.

FTL - $2,49 (75% off)
http://store.steampowered.com/app/212680

It is basically a Roguelike in space with some light sim aspects. And that roguelike aspect totally has its hooks in me. You start the game with 1 out of 18 ship designs available and try to get as far as you can for the highscore (or even beating the boss, but that will probably take a while), maybe unlocking other ships in the meantime. One of the biggest game surprises of the recent years and an absolute must play at this price point. There is a reason why so many people are in love with this game.
I just want to agree with Toma's sentiments here and add my own personal appraisal that FTL is my favorite indie game of all time. It certainly was my surprise GOTY last year, despite my only having bought it two weeks before the year ended, during which I spent a good 70+ hours playing it, as well as being my GOTY this year as well. I absolutely love this game. It is a wonderfully refreshing take on a roguelike set in space. I have died so many times and in so many ways, mostly from my own choices or mistakes. I don't even know what else to say here, $2.50 is such a fantastic deal for this brilliant game. You will be doing yourself a disservice if you skip over this game.

No prob!

It's not exactly correct to say that Receiver is short, since it's all about how long you last each time out. I suppose it could be short, if you knew exactly what you were doing from the outset - but you won't!

I'm pretty sure there are only turrets and drones, but not positive. The game has sort of a work-in-progress feel to it, but is still perfectly playable and complete. The way that you have to meticulously pay attention to all actions involving your gun makes things feel more tense, but also sort of intimate as opposed to most FPSs where your gun is just a point-and-shoot device. Actually, that's a pretty decent analogy: Receiver is to a high-end professional camera as most fps are to a cheap Kodak point-and-shoot - there's way more involved. It's totally worth the $2.99, either on Steam or straight from the developer, who is matching the Steam price atm.

Thanks for the impressions. Yeah, the whole reloading/complete control over your gun is a pretty fascinating mechanic. It's the type of thing that's only possible on PC (I've been a console gamer all my life till about two weeks ago)

If I have any money left after I get my most wanted games, I'm definitely getting Receiver

Just a heads-up to those considering Super House of Dead Ninjas, the steam client is flash-based. If my performance is anything to go by, expect frequent and substantial frame rate issues. Its too bad because the game is incredibly fun.

So, can anyone describe how substantial the endless space expansion is?

I got the gold edition anyway, but I'm curious how much the expansion adds.

I love this thing and I barely even have touched it... wish there were some FPSs that played like this more.

Antichamber is fantastic. Have I been living under a rock or has there been no talk about it? In some ways it makes me even more excited for The Witness. I know it's not the same people making the game but what I've heard about the game sounds in line with what I got from Antichamber.

I wish had spent more time with it earlier to talk about it later because I just finished it in the middle of the night before the sale expires. :(

Sure you're not experiencing the game's intentional slowdown, which is meant to mimic the slowdown of a Super Nintendo action game? I believe you can disable the slowdown in the settings if you dislike it.

THIS IS A NEW BULLETIN

Everybody who likes environmental puzzle games need to pick up antichamber....I had to use a pen and paper to solve a puzzle...PEN AND PAPER!...so good

To be fair, the game mostly becomes about getting blocks to locations/switches. They're still fantastic in the same way but the weird non-standard environment stuff seems like it's more for atmosphere.

How's Ys I+II ? It's currently in a flash sale and the game looks fun.

Predictable, done to death story.
Dialogue can be a bit cheesy but not to point of being offensive.
Protagonist is a silent lead.
Unconventional combat system. You kill by bumping on monsters.
Good boss battles, not as great as Ys Oath/Origin.
Depending on your taste, IMO excellent BGM.

Not sure if you have play any Ys games before, I always find their highlight to be the boss battles. They are the one of the best in business here. Even the size of the room suits the occasion.

Here's some more:

E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy - $2.49 (75% off)

Imagine if a gothic Deus Ex was made by crazy French developers on acid. This is a first person shooter with an insane aesthetic, fun gameplay, tons of varied action with an almost nonsensical story (mostly due to poor translation). Worth checking out.

Vessel - $3.49 (75% off)

A puzzle/platformer game with one of the best gimmicks around, real-time water physics! It also has a nice art-style with a steampunk theme.

I'd also like for Aquaria and Iron Grip: Warlord (the actual first FPS/tower defense hybrid, screw you Sanctum) to be mentioned, but they're not discounted for some insane reason.

i'll probably grab this before sale's end

wish they made a full, actual game with this 'mechanic'

Come on, folks!

Try to stick to the format that Toma outlined in the OP. All you have to do is copy/paste it!

I bought Hotline Miami. It took a while to set up my controller, has floaty analog controls, and glitchy sound. I don't think it deserves all the praise it's getting (yet), but it does have solid aesthetics. The music and the animal masks are the best part of the game. I like the fast repop, but I think it diminishes the risk in-game. I mean, yeah, they're probably trying to push the desensitization of death thing and all, but I guess I'd just like to see death mean more in a game.

It's not bad, but maybe not for me. I'll probably play a bit more later.

(Actually, I just played a bit more and I think it's growing on me;D)

Damn it, Tropico beat out Reus. :/ Hmmm, Tropico.....................

Dungeon Hearts - $1.49 (50% off)

Wow, looks interesting. I'll probably pick this up.

YES and YES! I said something similar in the main Stearn thread, but that bundle probably has more value than any other bundle I've seen. The only exception MIGHT be the Ultima bundle I saw on GOG.

FTL is one of the best Indie games I've ever played. I want to say best, but I can't commit to it. It's definitely top 5 - such a great game and every time I play it I always think, "Man, I wish I'd made this game first!!"

I don't know about you, but I'm certainly here for the Stearn sale.

I'm tempted to pull the trigger. I really don't want it on Stearn, because then I can't play it at work. Looks like a lot of fun.

Seconded.

Reus might still get a community deal. We'll see.
Yeah sucks that Reus didn't win. It might not be my kind of game, but I voted for it and was hoping the indie underdog would win. It looks like the kind of unique indie experience that brought me to Steam in the first place

Well, I am still hopeful considering it has one of those wallpaper thingies. And I cant stress enough how much I want the devs continuing to improve the game. They mentioned sea monsters that the villages might interact with, weather you can control and more stuff that would greatly enhance the features of the game.

Think you missed Unepic of that list, really deserves a mention

I miss about 50-60 games on that list, Unepic being one of my favourite Indies lately will of course be added eventually. I just dont have the time to do the list myself, yet we still needed a discussion thread. If you want to help out, grab the post layout in the OP and post recommendations in THAT format (read the text), which helps me a lot time wise. I'll try to get some more Indies in there, but doing it alone takes time.

Talking about villagers, what kind of ways can you interact with them? I saw in the trailer like towns at war and one of the gods throwing a boulder through a village. Can you punish or instigate conflict? Can you get involved, aid certain villages? (Never played a god game before)

And where can I find the info about those planned features? Sea monsters and controllable weather sounds awesome

To the first paragraph: yes and yes, but your main interaction is due the nature changes you provide. You plant animals/plants/minerals and then the villagers will react to what you do. However, you CAN punish a village if it goes to far and multiple villages can start a conflict that you might not approve, interacting alone without your guidance.

And for those planned features, you'll need to read the threads in the forum that sound like future plans. Currently, there isnt anything officially announced, but the features I mentioned were features that they threw around during development and needed to be cut due to time and money constraints.

Yo, Noitu Love 2 Devolution is straight up "Genesis-era/May as well be a Treasure game"- levels of good shit. Best $1.50 I've ever spent. Why wasn't this game made a bigger deal out of when it first dropped? I never heard about this until I checked this thread. =/

I am fighting this perception for a few years now. People see "Indie" and "2D" and lots of people just shut off immediately. Ridiculous. Anyway, glad you enjoy it :) The bigger your recommendation is (and if it includes interesting screenshots), the higher the chances of others checking it out.

Bonus points for using gifs.

Thanks for the Reus info, Toma. On my Wishlist now

I asked this in the main Steam thread but that thread moves way too fast:

Any indie games on Steam like Shadow of the Colossus? Mainly interested in climbing/platforming on moving levels.

---
So I got Cargo Commander. Here are my impressions. I know Toma and maybe others were interested.

You play a miner/debris collector in space. Each work days starts in your home station, where you can check email, upgrade your tools and weapons, and activate a magnet.

The magnet attracts cargo crates that slam into your station and into eachother. Your job is to explore these containers for loot essentially. But alien creatures roam these crates as well. Time is limited though. After a set amount of time, a wormhole appears and the levels start breaking apart. You must rush back to your home.

So far, that description doesn't sound very special but there are tons of cool details and touches that make the game fun. You can drill through walls and floors, making your own paths and entrances. Outside you can fly around in zero gravity (and limited oxygen). Entering a new cargo container shifts gravity so you might enter one from the bottom only for the screen to spin as you fall to the floor

Each run so far has been really intense. Especially when you're five or six containers away from your base, you cornered by enemies, the level starts breaking apart. You get sucked out, losing oxygen fast, struggle to get your bearings, find an opening or drill your own in the nearest container to replenish your oxygen.

It's a great game, a fun indie action platformer with roguelike elements. Recommended

Thanks for making this thread. So many games I've never heard of.

Still not even close to being done with the thread. Check back in a few days :)

I have no doubt Reus will get a proper sale day. All ten of the games with cards should, based on how the first two days have gone. (Card art matches up with the postcard for the top featured game.)

I'm in the mood for some Old West-inspired games. Any out there?

There are a few in development games I am looking forward to:

Dying Sun - PC

Dying Sun is a Real-Time Survival game with permadeath, organic gameplay systems and life experience engine that compliment a pseudo-RTS framework with unforgiving, precision combat.

The Curious Expedition - PC

A game in which the exploration of a lush, mysterious world is the core; we want you to feel like a real explorer. New secrets await every time you venture out, no matter how many times you’ve played. Lost World exploration strategy game, including David Bowie killing Dinosaurs with Tesla Beams!

This one is already playable though and quite interesting. It has huge UI issues, but the underlying gameplay is solid. We featured it in one of the past monthly Indie threads:

Pioneers - Free Beta (PC, Mac)

It's a turn based exploration game with some RPG elements where you lead a party of pioneers each with different professions, skills and attributes. You start out in a town where you first have to assemble your party from the tavern, plan out and buy equipment you need from the supply store and get yourself a ship. Or two. Then by conversing with different people you get quests, which may be to follow the steps of the previous explorers that never came back and find out what happened, find treasures, compose an accurate map, find contact with unknown native tribes and 'export' religion or simply be the first to disover a piece of the world.

I recommend keeping tabs on the monthly Indie threads if you are interested in these kind of unknown indies (I know you are aware of these threads, but I am legally required to mention them everywhere I can):

And two more reasons why I love indies

Was wondering, how did you guys get drawn to the indie scene? It's not mainstream or easily accessible like AAA gaming. It's something you kind of stumble upon. My first was Facade and since then, I was interested in indies. Mainly freeware stuff, but now I can experience the paid games too :)

Surprisingly I've found that while I still enjoy games like The Last of Us and GTA, I'm more interested in indies nowadays. The innovations and risky experimental ideas and mechanics seen in indies are just not possible on consoles or mainstream games.
