Steam Sale - (Overlooked) Indie Game Deals Discussion Thread

I am fighting this perception for a few years now. People see "Indie" and "2D" and lots of people just shut off immediately. Ridiculous. Anyway, glad you enjoy it :) The bigger your recommendation is (and if it includes interesting screenshots), the higher the chances of others checking it out.

Bonus points for using gifs.

To be honest, I was definitely in the camp that neglected (and often looked down upon) the "indie" scene for years. I've never been attracted to games that had that flash-game look to them, which is often the first impression/vibe I get when I see a lot of these games. I love and appreciate good sprite work and animations, however. WayForward is my favorite indie developer, just to give you an idea (if they're even considered indie?). This year, in particular, I find myself appreciating the scene a bit more than I did initially. I've always preferred underdog/niche games, but I've mainly supported that "scene" on the home consoles and portables. I've also not had a good gaming laptop/PC until recently so that may also be another reason why it took me so long to "find" and accept these games.

As a side note, I've also been working on a game/project with my brother using RPG Maker VX Ace for over a year now. The more we dedicated ourselves to this game the more appreciative I've become of the indie scene (or really any project that is developed by a small team/group of friends). I personally value working within limitations. My brother and I are trying to make the most out of our game with as little outside help/resources as possible (if you're familiar with the RPG Maker scene, we're basically not relying on custom scripts/tile-sets made by other people). We're essentially trying to "max out" the run time package (RTP) and we're really proud of what we've created so far.

Anyway, just wanted to say thanks again for creating this thread. Between this one and your primary Indie thread I've discovered a lot of cool and interesting games I would have never found out about.

And two more reasons why I love indies

Was wondering, how did you guys get drawn to the indie scene? It's not mainstream or easily accessible like AAA gaming. It's something you kind of stumble upon. My first was Facade and since then, I was interested in indies. Mainly freeware stuff, but now I can experience the paid games too :)

Surprisingly I've found that while I still enjoy games like The Last of Us and GTA, I'm more interested in indies nowadays. The innovations and risky experimental ideas and mechanics seen in indies are just not possible on consoles or mainstream games.

Well if you want to read my full stance on AAA vs Indie (which was also the reason why I started working on my monthly Indie thread idea):

But to answer your question in short.. I think it was the fact that I realized that I found awesome games that no one knows (Starting with CivCity 3 years ago), that made me build up my reputation on GAF by standing in for Indies on this forum. I saw I can inform people, and they are thankful for getting these recommendations. Might sound a bit selfish, but it feels good to be needed here so I kept digging further into the pit, with the current culmination in the monthly Indie threads which are a lot of work, but thankfully also give me a LOT back in return via recommendations from other users on games I have never heard about (which rarely happens with Steam only Indies) and lets me play awesome stuff I wouldnt play otherwise if it werent for the monthly votings.

There are a few in development games I am looking forward to:

Dying Sun - PC

The Wild West - ???

The Curious Expedition - PC

This one is already playable though and quite interesting. It has huge UI issues, but the underlying gameplay is solid. We featured it in one of the past monthly Indie threads:

Pioneers - Free Beta (PC, Mac)

I recommend keeping tabs on the monthly Indie threads if you are interested in these kind of unknown indies (I know you are aware of these threads, but I am legally required to mention them everywhere I can):

Super House of Dead Ninjas - $2.37 (66% off)

If the name isn't good enough on its own, its blistering pace should be. A race to the bottom of the tower with randomly generated areas and filled with enemies that are (mostly) one hit kills, that can kill you just as easily. You gradually unlock more weapons, sub-weapons, magic and health that help vary up your approach.
I just bought this based on your recommendation and I *love* this game.

Super fast, gameplay is reminiscent of Ninja Gaiden on the NES and the rogue-like-lite + gradual permanent upgrades are great.

Excellent write up. I totally agree with your points. And your thread reached 9 pages!

As seen in this thread and your awesome monthly threads, indies are the forefront of innovation in the medium. I used to only care about graphics or particular genres but now that I'm older (21), what I really appreciate in a gaming experience is something new, different, unique. Every indie I've played has delivered that.

So except for GTA V, all my future gaming will probably be indies.

And not sure if you saw it, but I posted my Cargo Commander impressions on the previous page

So I got Cargo Commander. Here are my impressions. I know Toma and maybe others were interested.

You play a miner/debris collector in space. Each work days starts in your home station, where you can check email, upgrade your tools and weapons, and activate a magnet.

The magnet attracts cargo crates that slam into your station and into eachother. Your job is to explore these containers for loot essentially. But alien creatures roam these crates as well. Time is limited though. After a set amount of time, a wormhole appears and the levels start breaking apart. You must rush back to your home.

So far, that description doesn't sound very special but there are tons of cool details and touches that make the game fun. You can drill through walls and floors, making your own paths and entrances. Outside you can fly around in zero gravity (and limited oxygen). Entering a new cargo container shifts gravity so you might enter one from the bottom only for the screen to spin as you fall to the floor

Each run so far has been really intense. Especially when you're five or six containers away from your base, you cornered by enemies, the level starts breaking apart. You get sucked out, losing oxygen fast, struggle to get your bearings, find an opening or drill your own in the nearest container to replenish your oxygen.

It's a great game, a fun indie action platformer with roguelike elements. Recommended

Great, thanks MB. I was just thinking of asking you what you thought of this game so that was perfect timing :). It was already in my wishlist after looking at its listing on Steam but it's down as a definite buy from me now, hopefully before the end of the Seal.

Well like you, as you may remember, I am a noob pc gamer. For years I disregarded pretty much anything to do with pc gaming as it seemed a waste of time to pay it any attention since I didn't have a pc capable of playing even very low spec games. I think the most I ever managed to get to run was a demo of VVVVVV but even World of Goo etc wouldn't run. I've also not paid much attention to PS360 gaming either as I don't have either of those consoles but that's a different story.

However, since I got a beefier pc recently I popped in one of Toma's threads on a whim and have since got more and more enamoured of pc gaming and indie gaming in particular. I absolutely agree with your last comment above. PC/Indie gaming has been an absolute breath of gaming fresh air for me. It's only now that I realise just how stale and bored I had become with console/handheld gaming. I'm even starting to wonder if I even wish to continue with console/handhelds.

Alright, added all of the correctly formatted posts to the OP so far.

I posted about Puddle but I'm not sure if I could run it. It would be an instant purchase for me if not for that.

Think I could run the game on these specs?
Pentium Dual Core B970 2.3GHz
4GBs of Ram
Intel HD Graphics 2000

(Really need to get a new laptop)

Here's a good one:

Eador: Masters of the Broken World - Price $14.99 (25% off)

A turn-based strategy and tactics game (think HoMM) set in a fantasy world. This game is just as a good, if not better than HoMM3 (i.e REALLY, REALLY good if you're a fan of the genre), it's basically a remake of Eador: Genesis, which only released on gog. The main issues are launch technical issues which may be patched out, but it's seriously one of the best strategy games available if you look past that and the janky animations.

You should be able to run it looking at minimum specs, but no guarantee.

Great, I love games like that

I mean, reading the reviews, it sounds so good. The levels seem incredibly varied. In one you might be manipulating rocket fuel in a space ship engine than be in zero gravity once the ship launches. Or you're cough medicine, moving through the body in fuzzy x ray-style visuals, avoiding needles and controlling peristalsis to move through the digestive tracf

Maybe one more opinion on my specs and then I'll buy

Yeah Noitu Love 2 is a truly fantastic game, Konjack the creator does commission work with Wayforward as a sprite artist, which shows especially the level 1 boss.
It's one of those games that's screaming out to be on a Nintendo system.

Anyway since folk are mentioning their recommendations here are mine:-

eXceed Complete Pack 50%off

header.jpg

Kinda like Touhou on crack, Ex3rd is very fast and aggressive due to proximity powered shots and emphasis on speed kills for score. Exceed 2nd plays like Ikaruga.
also
Ether Vapor Remaster is 50% off too, it's a 3D shmup with changing camera angles, the progenitor to Astlebreed that some ppl are excited for.
Carpe Fulgur Pack - All 3 games are good fun.
DustForce and Aquaria aren't on sale but if they do come up grab em

What I might buy.

Super House of the Dead Ninjas
Monaco
Nights into Dreams
Ys book 1 & 2

I really want to play the Exceed games but am so bad at those kind of games =/

Any more thoughts on my specs and Puddle? I'd like a few opinions to compare before purchasing

Windows 7
Pentium Dual Core B970 2.3GHz
4GBs of Ram
Intel HD Graphics 2000

No guarantee but I agree with the previous poster based on just reading the min specs.

I'd love to give this a try, but considering the amount of Indies I usually pick up, I need it lower please.

Added the other games that were mentioned in the meantime as well.

Dammit. I really should pay attention when I buy those indie bundles... Oh, Intrusion 2 looks interesting. Wait, already purchased. Well, what about English Country Tune. I could go for a good puzzle game. Already purchased. Maybe I should play some of these.

Great thread as per usual Toma (even if I did once say you ran in 50hz).

Although I own much of what has been posted so far I have noticed a surprising lack of Bastion and Frozen Synapse in here. So...

Bastion - Price $ 7.49 (50% off) (Will probably go cheaper if history is an indicator)

After buying this at Christmas 2011 and not feeling it after the first few levels thought I'd give it another go and boy am I glad. Pretty much have been sucked in by the slowly evolving story, beautiful art style and aurally pleasing soundtrack. A slow starter but once it gets going is really hard to put down.

Frozen Synapse - Price $6.24 (75% off) (Complete Pack - $ 8.74)

Great Turn Based Tactics game that is easy to learn but difficult to master. Made even more compelling with lots of usual and no so usual multiplayer options (for those of you who played Chess or Civ IV by email you'll get the idea). Great soundtrack to boot.

^I've been playing Bastion since last night to get cards, and while the combat is a bit too much hack-n-slash, the atmosphere is really nice. Narration is great, as well.

Someone has free keys for games with cards? ^^

Shush, no game or key begging.

Thanks :) Considering FS is one of my favourite games, its rather obvious that this game is missing a TON of games still. I just didnt have the time yet to include more games than the ones recommended in the proper format since I am on a trip atm.

Properly added this now and added the other stuff so far:

The Whispered World - $4,99 (75% off on Indiegala, Steam redeemable)
TWW%2011-620x.jpg

http://store.indiegala.com/index.php/the-whispered-world.html

One of the best and truest to the roots adventures when you liked the Sierra Adventures like Kings Quest VIII. Some Puzzles are a bit out of the world but you are definitely in for a treat. Its definitely my favorite adventure by FAR of the recent years. Actually I was thinking about creating an OT when it came out here, but it wasnt out in America yet and I wanted to wait. Well seems I missed that point. The game is great, has some unbelievably charming characters, smart puzzles (that get hard later on) and a very memorable ending. The Whispered World is a great, one of the best recent adventure games. Highly recommended. The voice of Sadwick is annoying though, so be warned.

Seems like a server error, cant even find it in the Steam search. Maybe the steam forums know whats up?

Edit: Hm, found it via direct store link: http://store.steampowered.com/app/233980/
Might be a server hickup.

Mount & Blade Warband would be considered indie, right? Probably

Anyway, do you think it would discounted further? I only have $24 left and I want Warband, Gunpoint, Puddle, and want to have enough left for some final impulse buy before the sale is over.

I guess I could ask the same about Gunpoint. More than 10% discount likely?

Both yes.
