Steam Sale - (Overlooked) Indie Game Deals Discussion Thread

Really? Not even for $2.49? The rotating world mechanic looks cool and it got pretty positive reviews

What are your thoughts on Pid?

I really enjoyed AYIM. I played it on WiiWare and it's one of my favourite games on there. There is a demo for it on Steam incidentally.

I've only played the Pid demo but it's already one of my most desired games.

Sine Mora - $2,49 (75% off)

Absolute steal at this price. Gorgeous looking shmup with varied level design and tons of challenges and difficulty modes to keep you occupied for a long time. Additionally, it has a very interesting "health" mechanic that punishes you for taking your time instead of your "HP". Highly recommended.

Finally a game I already own on Vita :p

Weird, how the opinions on AYIM are divided.

Anyway, AYIM, Pid, and Nimbus are still 3, 4, 5 on my Wishlist unless some other game gets a really good Daily/Flash price

Still waiting for Gunpoint and Warband...maybe today will be the day

Complete Naval Combat Pack (Sub Command, 688(i) Hunter/Killer, Dangerous Waters, Fleet Command) - $7,49 (75% off)

I have not played or even heard of these games, but they are tough as nails simulation games ALL of which got a metacritics ranking of 80+. Now if that isnt enough to be interested :p

Anyone has impressions?

Problem is that AYIM doesnt "explore its mechanic in various cool ways and wiring some brain twisting puzzles". It eventually adds some stuff but they are as basic as they could possibly be.
It's like we've been playing two different games here. :p

I felt the progression of puzzles kept things interesting and new...the mechanics never change (as in, no new abilities or moves), but the way you apply them kind of evolve as the levels present new challenges and obstacles. And even still, I feel the core mechanic is fun enough that repetition isn't a big issue. At least for me it wasn't.

I'm just surprised people would say it's flat-out "bad" or that it's not even worth the $2.50. I wonder if they even finished the game.

I did in fact finish it and I really needed to force myself through. *shrug* Cant please everyone I guess, its simply a divisive game!

See what I mean? I respect Toma's opinion, but like everyone else who posts about AYIM likes it. From the trailer, it definitely looks like my kind of game

Not everyone. There was another poster agreeing with me :p But yeah, seems like we are in the minority here. Try it if it seems right up your alley! If I'd listen to most people, I'd never have tried Dwarf Fortress, so you cant just always listen to someone else. Sometimes you just gotta dive in.

In any case, hope you enjoy it!

I try to avoid bad mouthing games and only say something when I like a game. However, I also didn't like AYIM. To be fair, I didn't finish it. I got bored after a half hour or so and quit. I have too many other games I'd rather play. As someone pointed out, there is a demo you could try first...

Precisely, "Trust your instincts" [/Starfox 64]

Or try the demo and then trust your instincts :P.

The list of games I need to add isnt getting shorter. Sigh.

I'm souring on UnEpic.

I bought the game as part of the July Jubilee Indie bundle. I picked up the bundle mostly for that and Oniken.

The bundle came with a key for Desura, which is cool, and I paid whatever the minimum was to get all the games + extras + soundtrack.

So now I find that the Desura version is old - still stuck at 1.3 or whatever. Steam keys have been issued to people who bought the game before a certain date - but only if you registered on the main site. Of course, they tell us after the fact so people like me, who supported the game over a year ago, have to pay extra to buy the game on Steam just to play the latest version.

There are a ton of developers out there and a lot of them treat their players better, I guess I'll just support them instead of UnEpic in the future.

edit:

Also, I'm looking for an Indie game that came out about 1-2 years ago and features a boy and a girl. I think it's a platformer and you toggle between the two characters to take advantage of their different abilities or something? I seem to recall the story being above moving up? I feel like I had it on my wishlist but removed it for some reason and now I can't find it.

Any ideas?

Tobe's Vertical Adventure?

I hit the search thread function, and incredably, I didn't find any mention of Hard Reset in this thread, an absurd deal from its already low price of $15 at now $3.74. Its an old school FPS with little fat and really great graphics/gameplay. How does a game this awesome not become a major hit, I dunno?

It seems to be a mixture between a god game,a puzzle game and some 4X elements thrown in (research, expansion, war). Not directly a puzzle game, but how you need to make sure that your village prospers with limited amount of space and within the scope of that, there seem to be tons of possibilities for different plants, animals, minerals, which all have a different symbiosis to something to enhance the effect, giving it a bit of a 4X touch as well. Example: Blueberries give you 4 food, but if you upgrade them to strawberries you get 8 food and if the strawberries are next to another patch of blueberries, they get an additional 2 food on top. All this helps developing your villages, which in turn is needed to advance the powers of your giants. Its really slick and charming and considering the surprising amount of variation and possibilities (100 plants), I can see myself playing this for a while. Its also suuuper cool to just watch people doing their thing. They really managed to give this game a special touch.

Reus Daily Deal!

Alright, well, the sales going on right now are too ridiculous and I'm tempted to buy all the stuff I want right now instead of waiting for the rest of the dailies to run their course. Natural Selection 2, Dust, Reus, plus that Dishonored sale? The floodgates of my wallet are about to open.

Probably gonna wait on Gunpoint though, seeing as how that was a community choice option that failed so it'll most certainly have a daily deal, similar to what happened with Dishonored. And I was stupid enough to miss Torchlight 2, so I'll wait to see if that pops back up.

Myself, I thought (and I seem to share this opinion with a couple people on GAF) it was just pretty boring. Neither the robot enemies nor the weapons were particulary fun.

I remember hearing good things about this game. I'll buy that shit.

Also, REUS!!! One of the best games I've played so far this year. My only complaint is that the end-game seemed to have difficulty issues - at least for me.

They fixed some of that stuff with the fear management in the last patch.

Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood - $2,49 (75% off)

One of the best Commandos clones. You have a group of people with different skills that you will need to coordinate properly to avoid enemies or take them out without making a huge commotion. I guess you could describe these games sort of as squad based top down stealth games.

The art style, the sound effects and unpredictable deaths are the main points which make the game bad. And I have finished the game.

Runespell: Overture - $2,49 (75% off)

This game is indeed fun.

Fun, yet very repetitive. Truly, there are some indie games which are good if you do not try to finish them. Having the right pace for your game is a challenge, and The Swapper is a masterpiece in this regard.

Simple. It's not a great game.

It combines the worst of Serious Sam with the worst of modern shooters. It's painfully linear, the weapons are all terrible, and enemy hit reactions are non-existent. Enemies have far too much health and show no signs of being damaged until they ultimately explore. I simply didn't find it satisfying to play in the least.

If the level design has at least been interesting (old school Doom-style key hunts, for instance, could have been great), it may have been mildly fun, but as it stands, you just run forward through similar environments shooting boring enemies. I really wanted to like it and it looks great, but it's just not a great shooter.

Picked up Hotline Miami...then pretty much beat it by the next day, lol. Man, it's a real blast. The trailers and videos didn't actually resonate with me, but I bought it anyway thanks to all the glowing recommendations it's been getting. What an addictive mess of LSD graphics, twitch gameplay, pre-emptive strategizing, and then coated with a trippy story (which I still don't full understand).

Also bought Super Meat Boy, which I've played a bit of before at my friend's place, but now I can play it all and at my own leisure, mwahaha.

So that leaves...

Will definitely purchase by 7/22
- They Bleed Pixels
- Super House of Dead Ninjas

Will purchase if there's a crazy sale
- La Mulana
- Dustforce

Still on the fence (feel free to sway me, one way or the other)
- Receiver
- Offspring Fling
- Costume Quest
- Noitu Love 2: Devolution
- Ms. Splosion Man

I did in fact finish it and I really needed to force myself through. *shrug* Cant please everyone I guess, its simply a divisive game!
Fair enough, sounds like you at least gave it a fair shot. I just figured the divisive part would've been over the art style, not necessarily the gameplay, which is why I was surprised.

Can anyone recommend some good indie metroidvania games? Not really a fan of puzzles so the less of that the better.
Cave Story.

Cave Story.

La Mulana's 50% off sale is as good as it will get, trust me. This will not change. It is a steal at 7$ and you are doing yourself a disservice not buying it.

It isn't like the author was super pleased with the sales either, apparantly they were rather disappointing. So let's help him out? It really is a fantastic game and just because it is quite tough and time consuming it doesn't get reported on so much by game journalists.

Similar to Demon's Souls, which before becoming a cult hit was ignored by the press as well.

Nonono, I LOVED the art style. I wish more games would use completely off the wall art styles that just seem... personal. Another recent example of this would be ballpoint universe:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=602751

I just felt that the levels were really, really, really basic. The biggest difference was basically the form of level obstacles. Then they sometimes threw some other things in that move according to the gravity that you are setting and might harm/squash you. Thats basically everything the game offered for me on a gameplay level in 2 sentences. The art on the other hand was lovely and the only reason I actually finished it.

Edit: I second the La-Mulana recommendation above me. Offspring fling is a cool puzzle game if you are into these kind of games, but La-Mulana is easily the highest quality game on your list and I'd easily recommend it over the ones in the "WILL BUY" category. I can see how some people might prefer them (as they are twitchy, fast paces action platforming games compared to the slower RPG sidescrolling metroidvania adventure), but La-Mulana is a standout game.

Oh man, I forgot this game was added to Steam! And for $2.50? Bought!

Man do I love bullet hells. Are there any other indie bullet hells on Steam?

Its not REALLY a bullet hell game per se. The main campaign wont give you much bullet hellness, but the challenge levels are fucking crazy.

I ony bought Toki Tori 2 and Bit Trip Runner 2 this sale.

Will definitely purchase:
- Rogue Legacy;
- Incredipede;
- Kairo;

Still on the fence:
- Monaco;
- Ms. Splosion Man;
- Sang-Froid - Tales of Werewolves;
- The Night of the Rabbit;
- Under the Ocean;
- Dyad;
- Bit Trip Fate;

Before someone crucifes me, let me tell that I'm aware that Monaco is a great co-op game. The thing is, I only enjoy playing co-op with real life friends and they don't like indie games, so I will have to play it alone. And I haven't heard any impressions telling if Monaco is a good single player game or not.

I did not like Monaco at all, and I was anticipating it for 4 years or something. I am so bitter and salty about this game. Dont get me wrong, its a decent action game, but I think there is a reason why most of GAF and the world forgot about the game 1 week after its release. Its just not even close to being the game I imagined it to be after the insane hype and award nominations.

And i thought i would be the only one. Game was great for one playtrough. After this... removed it instantly from my HDD without thinking twice.

I played 688i on my Amiga back in 1990 and it was pretty damn awesome.

I love my sim games, if you get around to it, I'd reeeeeally love to read some more impressions.

Okay, that's convincing enough for me. :)

"Twitchy, fast-paced action platformers" are my faves, but I could also use a nice change of pace, too. Fortunately, I have enough in my steam wallet to get both of my "will buy" games and La Mulana as well, but that'll be it. You guys got any suggestions for games under $1.42? That's how much I'll have left after those three, lol.

Turns out I actually already have Offspring Fling anyway (go figure). Receiver is pretty neat conceptually and probably the game I would've gotten if not La Mulana.

English country tune if you like puzzle games.
Delve Deeper if you like Board game style games.
Dungeons of Dredmor (without DLC) if you like Roguelikes.
Droplitz if you like action puzzle games.
McPixel if you like all around awesome funny weirdness.
Ben there, Dan that if you like adventure games.
Winter voices if you dont mind slowness in SRPGs.
Wizorb if you love Breakout clones.

For me it would personally be:
Dungeons of Dredmor > McPixel > Winter Voices > English country tune > Delve Deeper > Wizorb > Droplitz > Ben there dan that

But they are all good and fun games, kinda crazy what you can get for $1,42.

I'd love to buy many of these right now but I have a feeling some of these games are gonna end up in future Humble Bundles.

Yeah sure, but just view it as at least somewhat supporting the devs making games you appreciate instead of grabbing them even cheaper. Not saying thats a bad thing or whatever, but some of these game prices are ridiculously low already anyway.

Go so far:
- Bastion
- Cargo Commander
- Puddle
- Incredipede
- GMod

Will purchase:
- Gunpoint
- M&B Warband
- And Yet It Moves
- Pid
- Nimbus

Interested In
- They Bleed Pixels
- Antichamber
- Rochard
- Receiver
- Dustforce
- Surgeon Simulator
- Amnesia
- Prison Architect

Where is Antichamber? It had a daily on day one. Is it so overlooked that even Toma won't mention it?
It's a first person mindfuck of a puzzle game. Surprised no one has mentioned it

And I don't know Winter Voices.
