Steam Sale - (Overlooked) Indie Game Deals Discussion Thread

I'll be this good some day

Wth!? I don't think I'll ever hit this level of awesome

I find Hotline Miami to be almost impossibly difficult. Tried kb/mouse and controller. Can't get past like the 5th chapter.

Does anyone here have The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing? Reviews have been mixed, but it still sounds enjoyable. I'd only be particularly interested in it for co-op and it dips to 50% off...have the co-op issues been fixed?

It's not to bad, with the exception of a couple of chapters. Baiting the ai works incredibly well. Just run in and out of their line of sight, and around the corner/through a door. They'll give chase and you can ambush them. You should also choose whatever mask fits/augments your playstyle, until you get better and can work the combo system more.

Indie games I've purchased this steam sale:

  • Antichamber
  • Dungeons of Dredmor
  • Super Hourse of Dead Ninjas
  • They Bleed Pixels
  • To the Moon

Still on the wishlist:

  • Rogue Galaxy
  • Eversion
  • Gunpoint
  • Bleed
  • Rush Bros (though apparently not the best impressions from people)
  • Starseed Pilgrim
  • Nimbus
  • Kentucky Route Zero
  • Receiver
  • Offspring Fling

REUS.

Just a quick note saying you can buy REUS DRM-free from the developer's site for the same price as what you'd pay for the Steam sale.

Tobe's Vertical Adventure?

Tobe's Vertical Adventure?

Yeah, this was it! Thanks!

Too bad it's not on sale. :/

Awesome screenshot, but sucks that it gives away one important self-discovery event. That stage isn't bad, it's the last 2 guys that really suck.

HM really surprised me. I wasn't expecting much, but I keep going back to it. Definitely worth the reduced price. I have a feeling the game wouldn't be as alluring without the music / trippy visuals.

I was disappointed with They Bleed Pixels. It's a Super Meat Boy style platformer, meaning it's brutal and requires precision, but it is neither as fast nor as fluid, and that really hurts the game. Also I though the combat was clunky and brought the game down instead of improving it or bringing a new aspect to the genre, which I think was the intention. I wouldn't say the game is bad, I enjoy it despite the flaws I mentioned, but unless you're starving for precision platformers I would recommend buying something else instead.
I beat TBP and I pretty much agree with this. Instead you should turn your attention to the much overlooked Bleed. It's an action platformer with bullet time, crazy air moves and pattern based bosses. I guess people were busy playing Rogue Legacy when it came out on Steam so it kinda went unnoticed. But it really is an excellent game.

Played the demo. Bleed is awesome. It's an bullet hell acrobatic platformer/shooter. Someone add it to the OP.

Reus is a lot like the episode of Futurama "Godfellas" in which Bender finds himself playing god to organisms that crash land on him. Things go pretty well until everyone dies.

You place down resources which spawn towns, towns spawn projects which require further resources, resources influence each other in symbiotic or resonant fashion and can be transmuted via various effects, that unlock as a result of completing projects. These all cause feedback increasing growth in the towns and leading to further desires. There is limited space and multiple towns will eventually begin to war if left unchecked.

Play sessions are 30 minutes to an hour at the end of which your planets final shape unlocks new potential resources that can be used on the next session to aim for more varied impressive results.

The graphics are also really quite charming.

In what ways can you intervene if towns go to war? Can you favor one town over the rest?

And how do replays differ?

Hmm interesting. Thanks for the synopsis.

Some of the Giants have attacks that you can direct at armies or cities. So you can use those to sway things as you see fit. Additionally you can develop resources in certain ways to stave off their war-like tendencies.

Haven't gotten to do much in the way of replays yet, but it appears that most advanced resources are locked away on early playthroughs and become unlocked by creating certain town types and having them around at a certain development level at the end of a cycle. In this way you open up opportunities to develop larger more robust towns on subsequent playthroughs, while simultaneously giving you more things to track and deal with (eventually it looks like the people will start to directly attack the giants).

Man, I had heard it wasn't going to be a daily or flash sale, but I was still holding out hope. Oh well, 50% off is not a bad deal by any means. I'll probably pick it up later tonight.

Strangely, I experienced the opposite. I played and beat Bleed as soon as it came out, and really like it. But after playing only about half of They Bleed Pixels, I found it to be scratching the itch I was looking for from Bleed. It is very comparable to Super Meat Boy and games of that ilk, but I have zero negative to say about the precision of control or the fluidity of movement or combat. I think it's amazing.

You can't go wrong with either one, though. Get both!

Do you work for Playism? Cool!

And yeah, what's with the lack of La Mulana love on GAF?

I don't understand why more developers don't lower their prices to match what's going on in the Steam sale.

I wanted to pick up Eador straight from the developer, but he's still selling it for $19.-- on his website. He could have matched the Steam sale price and pocketed an extra 30% if he'd lowered his prices.

I'm looking at Dust miiiiighty closely. Just wish I didn't have to buy it on Steam. :/ With so many great Indies out there, it's looking like time is going to be more of a consideration than price. There's just not enough time to play everything out there. I should have waited to start playing Gnomoria until after the Stearn sale. ;.;

So yeah, I played about an hour of La Mulana and, man, I don't think this is for me. The movement is so stiff and awkward...maybe it just takes some time getting used to, but I don't like the way it controls at all. I admit I might be kind of picky when it comes to that...even still, it just doesn't seem to move/jump very smoothly.

I don't really get the logic in this game either...some pedestals I can press down and they open doors, while others (that look exactly the same) seem inoperable for some reason. And what about health? It feels like I just keep wandering as far as I can go in the dungeon, then die and lose all the random coins and green crap I collected. Oh and I press some button and the bottom half of a statue's mouth falls and kills me. Fantastic. Another time, I go down this secret ladder that leads to a dead end (???), and then I find I can't climb back out because every time I go up a screen, a stupid fish keeps hitting me and knocking me back down. I can't dodge it or attack because of the walls. :\

I'll probably give it another go again later this week, but right now I'm feeling pretty bummed out about it. I'd rather go back to working on my Hotline Miami speed run, where (and I can't believe I'm saying this) things actually make sense.

Ahh ok! My cheap ass will buy it now then.

Bought Dust after so many recommendations and just couldn't get past the presentation. I recognize that there is some fun gameplay underneath the characters art and voicework, but I found it so painfully distracting that I had to just stop playing after an hour which is a shame.

That sounds really cool. How much longer do I have to get Reus at the current price? Till 1PM tomorrow and then how long after?

Yeah I mean I love these kinds of games so when I rank one above the other it really doesn't say much. I still prefer TBP over the vast majority of games of course! Also you should definitely check out Super House of Dead Ninjas. It has the speed of Super Meat Boy and the controls are very tight.

I've been eyeing that one since the GB Quicklook, it'll definitely happen before this sale ends!

Alright, Toma. Your constant barrage of reusreusreus has convinced me to get it even though I have a billion games to play.

Are there any turn-based strategy games I should look at? List a few if you can, I probably own some.

・Warlock if you like the eXterminate X of TBS games.
・Endless Space if you're looking for space 4xer with nice visuals and promise.
・StarDrive if you're looking for meaningful ship customization
・Fallen Enchantress if you're looking for a fantasy 4xer that is constantly getting better
・Eador: Masters of the Broken Shard(s?) if you're looking for a complex, difficult fantasy 4xer.

Warlock is fun at what it does - combat.

Endless Space is constantly improving but has weak diplomacy and little aethetic difference between the various factions.

FE IS getting better, but I haven't had enough time with the latest installment to really rate it.

I'm thinking of getting 1000 Amps but I heard it was hard, how does it compare with La Mulana in difficulty? With the latter, I got too frustrated but I'm hopeful this is a little easier and more forgiving. Also, does it have 360 controller support?

It's not hard, there aren't even any enemies in the game. You might have to think a little to solve some puzzles but that's it.

I hope I am responding in time before you spend money. I am a pretty big ARPG player so I pre-ordered Van Helsing, played in the Beta and had a really good time before it came out.

However, the main reason I got the game was the co-op. Since the game released the co-op has been completely fucked and my friend and I have been unable to play for more than 10 minutes at a time. We play everything together co-op (even some games using Hamachi and the like) so this is not a case of user error. The number of "complaints" about the co-op have gone down on their forums but I think that is because many people took the refund they offered or gave up. Every time a new patch comes out, we try again and after 10 minutes the lag makes it unplayable for the person joining.

In summary, the co-op is STILL messed up and I would advise staying away from this game if co-op is your goal.

Shitty! I guess this game doesn't have local co-op or a LAN mode that can circumvent those issues...? Can't believe a game like this would (still!) have broken co-op...and they're already developing a sequel! Do they like throwing money away?

Warning about Warlock...there is no campaign. It's just random maps or multiplayer.

FE and Eador look like they'll be worth grabbing at some point. Probably going to wait for a few more patches and perhaps further discounts. I've got enough stuff to play.

It's not indie, but have you played Heroes VI? It sounds like it was only so-so at release, but it has received a lot of patches, so I'm hoping it polished up well.

Yo. Get Might and Magic Clash of Heroes it pretty much makes puzzle quest look like kid stuff.

It's an actual srpg and puzzle game cocktail. The awesome thing about it is that you get turns to actually defend yourself instead of just having bad luck and getting crushed by instant attacks like you do in puzzle quest.

Seconded. And it's made by fellow gaffers.

Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes is one of only a few games that I would recommend to everyone - regardless of whether they are a gamer or not.

I spent almost 5 months playing that game at least once a day. Even my wife got into it. I was so into this game, I harassed Capybara on twitter to make a sequel (up to UBIsoft.) I even sent their customer support an email asking them about the thinking behind some of their design choices. This is another one of those games that I wish I'd come up with first and really want to make a game LIKE it without copying it.

This is probably my favorite game on 360 and definitely my favorite XBLA game (up there with Geometry Wars 2.)

THE ONLY two faults I have with this game are

1) The factions are not balanced - especially if you're playing with Artifacts. Capy swears up and down that they are, but I have not found that to be the case and I have hundreds of matches worth of experience to support this.

2) The DLC was too little, too late. Also, the new bosses don't really offer anything new to the experience. Out of all of them, only 1 of them is worth really using.

Such a great game. I guess you might not enjoy it as much if you're not going to play multiplayer. Matches against other people were great (at least in the early stages of the game before the dominant strategies became apparent.) If it is on sale and you like games, you really should check this game out.

No local or LAN unfortunately otherwise I would have just switched to Hamachi and called it good. I posted on their forums when they announced the sequel and they said they were "very close" to having multiplayer fixed and Valve was helping. Since it has been several weeks and patches since then I would say we have different versions of "very close".

It is an average to slight-above average ARPG in single player but if you advertise co-op then it should work, especially two months after launch. Sorry for the rantiness of this but I really had high hopes for this game and their ineptitude has soured the experience.

FYI for those hoping that Dust:AET will drop below 50% during the sale... I'm not allowed to say but let's just say chances are VERY slim.

people please buy To The Moon i just finished it. such an amazing experience, what an incredible story. you really have to buy it.

seriously.

it will be the best 4 bucks you ever spend.

edit:

Also, for those of you looking to buy Reus from the developer webpage, buying the game using the widgets on the page (i.e. the Humble store) will ONLY get you a Steam key. If you want to play the game DRM-free, you need to buy it from GOG or Desura. I bought it via Google checkout and was disappointed to find nothing but a Steam key in my inbox. The webpage itself says that certain distributes will provide a Steam key, but it fails to say that you will ONLY get a Steam key. It's not like other Humble purchases where you get a direct download and a redeemable Steam key.

Sigh. If I'd wanted a Steam key, I would have bought it from Steam. :/ Sucks and means that I won't be playing the game for (quite) a while.

Dust is a great deal at that price. I had very little interest in it until it released on PC and I am sure glad you brought it over. Dust is easily one of the most polished indie games I have ever played. I am really impressed with the game you put together and enjoyed it immensely. Hopefully the Steam sale exposure is treating you well.

Thank you, I appreciate the kind words :) I can't share numbers, but Steam has been very good to the game. It's my preferred gaming platform, so it was a pleasure to finally bring it over.
