Steam Sale - (Overlooked) Indie Game Deals Discussion Thread

Thanks for being honest. I'll add these games if we find someone else here vouching for the games. I am going to add Super Splatters myself because I loved the concept.

I bought Super Splatters when it released on Steam but unfortunately only had time to play it for about 50 minutes. I can't give any detailed impressions, but I did like what I saw of the game and definitely look forward to have some more free time so I can play it more!

EDIT: Gunpoint is on daily!!

Yup, dont need to spend time hailing it in the main Steam sale thread though, more than enough people over there who played and loved it.

Picked up Wake, it's interesting so far. Didn't realize there was a random element to the map. Not really sure if I'm playing it right, but it's got style.

Edit: Just finished it, pretty cool. Only take 20 minutes or so to play through once, but again it's meant to be played over and over with the random elements and high scores. Worth the sale price for sure. A bit finicky with full-screen though.
Yeah, it's a nice little game. Though I wasn't a fan of the abundance of flashy stuff on screen, makes it hard to see where you're going. Managed to beat it in my second try, in a little under 30 minutes.

Haven't tried Lunnye Devitsy yet. And I definitely need to play Dust one of these days.

Reposting here for more feedback:

Getting Gunpoint for sure, but debating on the edition. Can anyone who has them comment on the extra features? Is the soundtrack good? Is the commentary interesting? (This is the main thing that would sell it to me- loved the HL2 episode commentary) Are the prototypes different/playable enough to enjoy a run through in addition to the main game? Thanks!

Reposting here for more feedback:

The prototypes are interesting, but nothing you'll play for long. Its more interesting from a design/gaming development point of view and what progress he made between each version. The soundtrack is good and the dev commentary is interesting too, but I havent seen ingame commentary yet if it is available.

Huh. The official Gunpoint website didn't price match the daily deal. Should I wait for it to do that?

Someone said they did now.

Eschalon: Book I (&II) - $1.49 (75% off)

Old School RPG with a HUGE map, dozens of dungeons, hundreds of items, strategic gameplay that you wont just be able to *clickclickclick* yourself through. Fantastic classic style Indie RPG with interesting lore that really deserves a closer look. The only reason why it has some rather low votes is the presentation, UI and graphics. If you can look beyond that - recommended.

Wait for Rainbow Six 3 Gold to drop lower than 6.49 (will it?) or get some indie games (Pid, Nimbus)?

Rather unlikely I'd say, but no hurt in waiting for the last steam sale.

Blocks that matter - $1,24 (75% off)

Seriously, highly fun game, but be prepared for a challenge if you want to pick it up.

worth noting: sequel's coming. Called "Tetrobot & Co." changes the direction from half-platformer to purely puzzle game with mouse controls, and other stuff. If you're part of the Steam group for the first game the devs post stuff on development of the new one fairly often, wich honestly is something that should be done more by everyone.

One of the best shmups I ever played with a great artstyle, level design and fantastic soundtrack. I am still playing this game on and off after 3 years or something to FINALLY beat it eventually. Highly recommended if you have even only a slight interest in shmups.

Exactly 100 games in the OP (and a few bundles) and I finally hit the character limit. Will add some more stuff once a mod deleted a few posts so I can fill up another post.

Hey y'all, saw Gunpoint up as a Flash sale and thought it looked awesome so I thought I'd drop a line here saying that you can buy it for Windows from the developer's website for $6.00! It comes with a Steam key and is, of course, DRM-free!

Sale lasts for about 5 more hours. Get it while it's hot!

Has anyone tried Noitu Love 2 Devolution? I almost ignored it due to its name, but I saw a screen then a video and it looks like a fun sidescroller (though, apparently no controller support).

Cave Story+ - $2,49 (75% off)

This game confused me. I bought it awhile ago and gave it a go...it seemed better to avoid combat. I'm trying to remember now...I recall thinking "WTF, why even bother when you lose XP for getting hit?"

EDIT: I couldn't get the demo of Gunpoint to work on my PC. :(

Congrats! Great thread and great support from us indie lovers. So many cool games I would have never found or overlooked if not for the recommendations here.

So besides Pid and Nimbus, the other games that sound intereresting are:
AI War
Gateways
Men of War (Condemned Heroes or Vietnam)
Super Splatters
Wake
Valley Without Wind 1

Question about AI War: do the massive unit numbers have any impact on gameplay or is it purely aesthetic?

Thanks to this thread Toma, I just went on an indie shopping spree :)

Thanks again the doing this thread Toma and other contributors! Really appreciate it.

Hope your wallet survived the onslaught.

I've heard that the game is a horrible mess, ridden with game breaking bugs and such. I don't know if it was fixed, but I'd rather buy something else just in case.

No clue which problems these guys were referring to, but the demo was good fun.

So, I caved on Fist Puncher and spent a few hours with it yesterday. Overall, it's a good game and well worth it if you're a fan of old school side scrolling beat-'em-ups like Streets of Rage and Double Dragon. It's got a range of vigilantes to play, and among the 10 I've unlocked (out of 15) there's a good variety of moves and fighting styles, aided by the fact that as you level you're given stat points to distribute among five stats that have tangible, consequential results. Im a big fan of the fact that different situations and enemies really do call for using certain vigilantes. There's also a pretty wide spectrum of enemies, environments, and level objectives/gimmicks, which I won't spoil for those of you that want to purchase it. I like the atmosphere, too. It's funny, outrageous, and always throwing something crazy at you. Also a big fan of all the collectible cards that double as achievements in the game. Haven't done co-op yet, but I'm sure it's good.

It does have some problems though. First is that even though the combat is pretty well balanced overall, there are times when it does rapidly swing from having you kicking ass with (maybe a little too much) ease to having to resort to cheesing your way through the next fight/boss battle with repetitive drop kicking to build up your special meter or completely changing vigilantes in order to exploit a ranged characters special move to slowly poke down a boss. The other big whiff would have to be the music. As one of these outrageous callback games, I expected it to have some over-the-top 16-bit tunes rocking in the background as I performed unnecessary brain surgery on criminals around the city, but the music is so subdued and actually a notch lower than the sound effects so I hardly ever even heard it unless I was purposely trying to do so. It definitely deserves more, but I think this game was made on a pretty low budget Kickstarter so I would chalk it up to that. Still, a quality soundtrack would've done wonders for the game. I might just play it while running the Guile Theme or the UN Squadron or Double Dragon soundtrack in the background.

Like I said, overall it's a good game and worth a buy if you're a fan of the genre or are just looking for some pleasing, almost cathartic fun.

Gunpoint get! And this buy ends my Steam 2013 summer sale. I just wish these indie games were able to port for Mac right from the start or at all hehe. I tend to play most of these games on my MacBook than on my windows desktop.

If you were only going to buy one, which should it be? Book I or II?

Is II a sequel or is it a final fantasy situation?

Its a sequel story wise as far as I know, but you can probably easily enjoy part 2 without playing part 1. I got the impression the story might about be as closely related as Diablo1 to Diablo2. Eschalon I is the cheaper game anyway though, so you might as well start with the first one.

It’s your job to sneak your way through a deadly facility that’s determined to extinguish your fragile little life. With no weapons and no armour, being seen means instant death. Stay out of the light to avoid the attention of deadly security robots! Leap like a lusty salmon to avoid those zap-happy lasers! Think fast as the walls close in around you! Only the fastest and sneakiest will make it to the exit without being mangled by the facility’s security systems. Will you be among them?

Fun puzzle platformer based more on quick reflexes than logic. You descend towers of ever shifting blocks to find a map at the bottom and escape. Sounds simple, but you can be crushed or thrown from the tower, and many of the blocks are traps such as water/spike pits, projectiles or enemies living inside the wall who will pull you to your death.

Do you know if this was on xblig? I think I remember playing a demo of it. Didn't particular lyenjoy it but that screenshot reminds me of how great Catherine is

Mac and PC only, but from googling there are plenty similar games on XBLA/XBLIG. Havent played it myself yet, but I have been interested in it for a while now.

Nooo!! Not another awesome-sounding game to add to my growing list of indies to get. A puzzle platformer and moving levels?! Has anyone played this yet?

I am not done with this thread before I am.. done with this thread. :p

No idea if the leader boards reset in Dyad. But it's tragic that only 200~ people have made it to the final level. I played for a few hours only. I'm guessing that it does not because Steam stats reports that 0.0% of players have obtained all trophies from the game.

Anyway I really enjoyed it. It has beautiful production on the audio and visual side. The menus and UI try to be more refined than they really are. Post game infographics look cute but are quite hard to read some times. For the price it's great value and it has what appears to be a no fail chill out mode with modifiers if you're not hardcore. Weird how the Sony crowd hyped this one up but the PC audience hasn't taken to it. Way more interesting than Audiosurf and more engaging than Rez. It makes me want to play some more tunnel racers now, I didn't care for Space Giraffe so perhaps I should try Tempest.

I'm guessing that it isn't purely because there are like a dozen people on some of the harder achievement leaderboards and Steam reports that 0.0% of people have completed the game.

Achron - $6,99 (65% off)

Take this recommendation with a grain of salt. Achron is not a really a good RTS game per se, although its something diehard RTS fans should give a try to experience something that no other game in the genre brings to the table - Time Travel (in MP even). What you'll need to learn is how to counteract an attack on a battle that you already won before, while trying to defend a factory by using a group of units from that factory that had not yet been produced. Trying to learn this game deep fried my brain. A purchase gives you TWO copies, so you can deep fry a friends brain with the same purchase!

The game is pretty limited. Do not buy it.

Hm, it was a recommendation by one of my Steam friends. Not a hot recommendation or anything, but he liked it apparently. What are your issues with it?

While Lunnye Devitsy is not a recent release, this little gem from Boss Baddie deserves all the attention it can get, even now. Published a couple of years ago in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the moon landing, this starry-eyed puzzle platformer for the PC takes gamers on an interplanetary expedition like no other. Dripping with atmosphere, vast and interesting environmental design, innovative puzzles, beautiful and fitting soundtrack. Available in a pack with the game "Wake" for super cheap.

My first buyer's remorse on Steam :/.

I just tried both games and took an instant dislike to both. Wake looks like ass. Given that I'm someone who doesn't care in the least about technical proficiency where graphics are concerned and usually shake my head when I see gamers posting a screenshot of something that looks perfectly nice to me, saying it looks like shit, that tells you how awful they are. The fact that the configuration options are so poor so to minimise the ugly one has to play it in a tiny little window doesn't help.

That put me in a bad mood so I tried Lunnye Devitsy which was a more favourable first impression but my bad mood meant I had little patience for it.

So I've deleted both games and put the Steam library listings in my "Beatinated" category. I'll probably give them another go another day and perhaps they will click with me then. However, from what I have experienced so far I cannot in all conscience recommend these games, even at the low low price that they are currently available for. Caveat emptor.
