Steam Sale - (Overlooked) Indie Game Deals Discussion Thread

Hm, it was a recommendation by one of my Steam friends. Not a hot recommendation or anything, but he liked it apparently. What are your issues with it?

I have played for 5 hours, got half of the achievements, and the game is very repetitive. Once you have played one level, you have played all the levels. There are a few water traps which might not be there in the first levels, but the game does get boring. Moreover, I dislike the artstyle, which is very common. However, I think the same of Droplitz, so I don't know how you would feel about Diamond Dan.

Currently having fun with Mark of the Ninja. Recently finished The Swapper (best indie game I've ever played, hands down, holy shit you need to play that game).

Also got Dust An Elysian Tail that I need to play.

Thinking about picking up Monaco when it's a daily/flash. Anyone tell me what it's about, what the gameplay entails, etc.? (I know it's co-op, gunna play it with friends).

You have played among the best indie games of 2012 and 2013.

In better news...I have finished Dear Esther and am really glad I played it. In fact I shall probably replay it since the snippets of narration are apparently randomly generated so once gets a unique experience each time. I invariably loathe story driven games but couldn't help but be quite affected by this one and was quite moved by the ending.

Another recommendation for Droplitz. I got all the achievements on the 360 and loved it. It's not for everyone though, it's a fast-paced puzzler - it's the kind of game that makes me forget to blink. Also, if you're really bad at it, you don't ever unlock the other modes (mentioned as a con in some reviews). It just takes a bit for the mechanism to click, though, and it becomes so much easier to do well.

To be honest, there are only like 3 different sizes/types of stages per mode (6 of the 9 stages are solely separated by difficulty rather than different design). The size of the stages is important (or should be) though - having a larger board really puts emphasis on your ability to find more of the possible connections at once, setting up future connections for when current pipes disappear, and delaying easy connections to continue your combo. Once you become good, though, they're the easiest to get a really high score on.

The endurance mode could last forever. I mean, that's what endurance means, but it never gets more difficult, as far as I can tell. One of the 360 achievements was to play it 2 hours straight, if that gives you an idea of its easiness. There's only one stage for this, but you can change the background.

The Power Up mode is a little different, but I usually end up abandoning the powerups unless I have a lot of straight pieces or I have freeze and get a large combo.

Infection (where goo makes the pieces flip slower) changes the game slightly, but I never really worried about it much and still did well on them. You're going to use every piece if you're good anyway, so it doesn't seriously change the way you play. It's slightly harder than the main stages, I guess.

I'm gonna get it on Steam for this sale and see if I can do well on the leaderboards.

Should I get Gunpoint or Evoland?
Based solely on impressions and Giant Bomb quick looks, Gunpoint. I'm probably going to get Gunpoint too.

+1

I'm looking forward to going back to Dear Esther again sometime soon.

Also, having just finished it, I would like to reiterate my enthusiasm for Intrusion 2. It's a game that does a great job taking its central mechanics to a logical but over-the-top conclusion. Some truly memorable set pieces.

Should I get Gunpoint or Evoland?

I haven't played Evoland yet (I only bought it today), but for what is worth Gunpoint is a really enjoyable little game. It's not too long, I finished it in 4 hours, but the gameplay is intriguing, the banter before missions can be really funny and there's a certain replayability.

Hotline Miami is crack. I started playing it and was like "WTF is this crap?". But a few levels in and I was at the infamous "Just one more level.."-stage

..Buying games during Steam sales is also crack BTW..

Glad you enjoyed it. I like exploration in games like Minecraft, Skyrim, and RDR but Dear Esther doesn't look my kind of game. The idea is cool but I prefer wide open sandboxes where you can stumble onto stuff or generated worlds

Anyone played The Bridge?

Stylistically it looks amazing

Any impressions of this? I enjoyed Echochrome on PSN and those screenshots reminds me of that game

I won't say never, but if it were to ever happen, it'd be a VERY long wait. Sorry I can't be more specific than that :p Microsoft is my publisher for what it's worth.

I appreciate the feedback, and yea I kind of figured.

on another note Evoland impressions? Good game or just a game with an interesting hook?

Can someone tell me if there are any final fantasy tactics type games on Steam? Any help would be appreciate

I've seen the 2 Grotesque Tactics, but they've been pretty low on my priority list to get. Others can probably given better recommendations. Xcom: Enemy Unknown is definitely not an indie game, but it is a Strategy Turn-Based game that a lot of people seem to like. It's probably similar enough that you'd still like it.

I just realized I have Portal (1) as a steam gift.

1st person to friend me on Steam gets it.

(I assume everyone has this already?!?!?)

I am manhack on Steam

No idea if the leader boards reset in Dyad. But it's tragic that only 200~ people have made it to the final level. I played for a few hours only. I'm guessing that it does not because Steam stats reports that 0.0% of players have obtained all trophies from the game.

Anyway I really enjoyed it. It has beautiful production on the audio and visual side. The menus and UI try to be more refined than they really are. Post game infographics look cute but are quite hard to read some times. For the price it's great value and it has what appears to be a no fail chill out mode with modifiers if you're not hardcore. Weird how the Sony crowd hyped this one up but the PC audience hasn't taken to it. Way more interesting than Audiosurf and more engaging than Rez. It makes me want to play some more tunnel racers now, I didn't care for Space Giraffe so perhaps I should try Tempest.
I bought this one, and only played the first 2 levels (couldn't beat the 2nd one). Looks really cool, though I need to play it some more before I can have a proper opinion about it.

Steam sales are such a tease when you're on a Mac :( Picked up Kairo, Bleed, Bastion and The Walking Dead though, so that's enough to keep me busy. edit and blocks that matter :P

According to the other Steam thread, Evoland is a bad execution of an amazing premise

But regarding Gunpoint, I think the length is debatable. I spent over three hours on the few demo missions alone, messing around with the Crosslink, trying to ghost levels, trying to do the levels as fast as possible. And I can only imagine how my times I could replay levels once I have all the tools and upgrades

But I have a passion for stealth games so others may not have fun replaying levels

Torus Trooper is the game Dyad drew inspiration from, and I think it's freeware. It was pretty fun in BlastWorks. It has simple graphics, but you might like it.

In fact, Torus Trooper makes me interested in this since they're loosely similar.

and VVVVVV and Aztaka and Witcher 2, maybe it's a good thing I have a limited selection after all :(

Yes, I do too but you are right, Dear Esther is not that kind of game at all. Essentially it is the equivalent of going for a stroll on an island which gives the illusion of open roaming but ultimately only gives one way forward in progression whilst listening to a short story on an mp3 player with somewhat wanky prose. It is a pleasant, scenic walk though and despite the phrasing of the story one can't help but be moved by it.

I always think that when game length is discussed. Not everyone plays games in the same way. Some people like to rush through games to 'beat' them as quickly as possible to get onto the next game on their 'to do' list and some people like to take it leisurely and savour the experience. I am in the latter camp so rarely do the "it only takes x hours to beat game y" comments have any relevance to my interests.

Thanks I will try it out.

Thanks for the response. The Grotesque games look awesome. This should fill that void

Stealth Bastard Deluxe - $3.39 (66% off)

I've played this and it is fairly fun. The puzzles (at least in the beginning) are well thought-out and there are plenty of "doh!" moments when you feel like the game creator is playing with you.

Personally, I liked the pixel-based graphics and the overall atmosphere of the game.

Don't take my word for it. You can try it out.

I'm giving away a Steam key for this game to the first person who can make me laugh with an indies-based photoshop.

Thanks, Burt! :D

Any indie tactical strategy in the vein of Enemy Unknown? Gun based, small squad, cover, line of sight, fog of war, flanking, etc?

I know of the Jagged Alliance series, not sure if that's consider indie.

This offer is open to everyone with preference to people who are strapped for cash and are looking for something to play.

I think Xenonauts would probably fit. It's essentially old X-Com updated from what I hear, and it's on Steam as early access. Not part of the sale unfortunately, so that $19.99 might seem a little hard to justify at the moment, but it's got pretty much everything you're looking for.

Thanks. Yup, that looks like my kind of game. Too bad it's not discounted.

The sheer number of games and indie games on Steam is pretty overwhelming when you're not a big PC gamer. Would anyone mind throwing out a few names of games with great soundtracks?

Hola indie lovers.

Made a bunch of purchases based on this thread--currently playing The Swapper now and beat Dust: Elysian Tail earlier.

Does anyone have any recommendations of games similar to Shadow Complex on 360? Absolutely loved that game.

Thanks for playing Dust :) As for your question, two games that had some similar aesthetics were Deadlight and Swapper, but neither were a Metroidvania. Cave Story+ is an amazing Metroidvania, but is very different visually.

People are torn on Deadlight (I liked it), and it is linear, but it's one of the closest games I can think of on Steam.

Thanks for posting here. Dust was one of my fav games last year. Can't wait to see your next effort!

No problem man. Absolutely loved Dust--so gorgeous I couldn't stop playing it. Pretty much beat it in one sitting--my dude was all decked out at the end.

Make more :D

I can't recommend 1000 Amps enough. This is a great MetroidVania game and it's just a delight to play. I don't ever want this game to end. It's such a joy when I finally beat an area after trying for a while. Also, finding each upgrade is a joy too. Get this game now!

Ugh guess who forgot to checkout Gunpoint before heading to the theater to see Pacific Rim? :(

The movie is fantastic though, so I can't really blame it for missing out on that flash sale. Guess I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed for a repeat deal.

I'm probably going to need some help on this one, but I'd say -

・Bastion
・Frozen Synapse
・Miami Hotline
・Trine
・They Bleed Pixels
・Endless Space (not sure if ST is included)
・FTL
・Jamestown
・Shatter
・Dustforce
・Swords and Sworcery
・Sequence (no OST but tasty Ronald Jenkees action)

I'm pretty sure most of those have OSTs. Just double check before buying.

Just started playing Kentucky Route Zero (I stupidly paid full price for it two weeks ago).

Wow, I'm in love. I know it's unlikely, but I sure hope it goes on sale so more people can play it.
