Steam Sale - (Overlooked) Indie Game Deals Discussion Thread

I'm probably going to need some help on this one, but I'd say -

・Bastion
・Frozen Synapse
・Miami Hotline
・Trine
・They Bleed Pixels
・Endless Space (not sure if ST is included)
・FTL
・Jamestown
・Shatter
・Dustforce
・Swords and Sworcery
・Sequence (no OST but tasty Ronald Jenkees action)

I'm pretty sure most of those have OSTs. Just double check before buying.

Can vouch for all of those. Especially Dustforce and Hotline Miami, love their music. I would add Lone Survivor, Fez, and Thomas Was Alone too. TWA probably needs you to play the game to appreciate it more than the others, though. No, I just listened, it doesn't.

It's an expansive list. A lot of indies seem to take great pride in putting out stellar music.

Edit:

I've only just started playing it, but Kentucky Route Zero has a great soundtrack.

This too.

I'm kind of surprised this hasn't been mentioned:

Retrovirus - $9.99 (50% off)

http://store.steampowered.com/app/227800/

It's a 6DOF shooter set in a digital environment from the creators of Sol Survivor, where you're tasked with destroying a damaging virus. Any Descent fans must play this, it's a unique twist on the 6DOF formula which is something rare these days.

Also this:

Miner Wars - $4.66 (75% off)

This is a 6DOF shooter with a unique gameplay addition of fully destructible environments (think Red Faction 1). At release the game was a mess (always online, performance issues), but since launch that's been patched out and is worth the price-tag. Any Descent fans should give this a go, at the very least the game looks fantastic.

Do it. I had it on PSN but double dipped on Steam (during a sale a couple years ago now). Really cool twist on the breakout genre. Plus while that list has a bunch of good soundtracks, my favorite is Shatter's. And oh, it's on sale for two bucks.

There's a remix album that several Japanese artists helped work on to celebrate the release of the game in Japan. It is excellent!

...wait, really? That's bizarre. Any idea what separates yours from everyone who does have an OST available?

Apparently it's something that they want to get away from. Unfortunately the timing just didn't work out for me. Trust me, I'm not thrilled about it.

Thanks everyone. I just bought FTL, Miami Hotline, and Bastion as I've heard good things about those already. I'll check the rest out after I get some sleep.

And yeah, Super Meat Boy has some badass tunes, some of my favorite of the year.

I bought Pid and I've been playing it for about 4 hours. First two hours were nothing special but it suddenly turned into portal like chamber tests and got pretty addicting.

The sheer number of games and indie games on Steam is pretty overwhelming when you're not a big PC gamer. Would anyone mind throwing out a few names of games with great soundtracks?

I highly recommend checking out the media corner at the bottom of the OP for the monthly threads:

There is a great podcast linked there called MetaVendetta where they present and talk about Indie Game soundtracks.

They add shit like programs and then get rid of soundtracks? Why not just have a soundtrack store? That would be all kinds of awesome.

Voted for Expeditions Conquistador. Any good?

Yes, but.. hm. Its a game of the current monthly Indie thread, I havent played much of it yet, but it seems to be an apt game that I just didnt felt like learning yet.

And Wake gets a thumbs up from me as well. Aside from being dirt cheap and being in a bundle with another game, its a really clever short Highscore Metroidvania (with online leaderboards) with tons of playthrough possibilities to explore. One run might take you about 20-30 minutes, but on your first try you'll end up at 3000 point like me, while the best players have like 300000 points on the leaderboards. You need to find certain items like the axe to open doors or the flares to illuminate dark rooms, while also taking the rising water levels of the ship into account. Its really smartly designed since that time pressure element also doubles as a fallback for inexperienced players since you can reach higher ledges if the water rises higher. Finding the proper way before the water rises to that level however will guarantee a better score in the end. Its not just helpful either, if you rely too much on the water some items will be unreachable since you cannot axe a door underwater for example.

Really cool little game. But I agree that the washed out art style is a bit annoying. I'd prefer having the clean pixel art as well. I tried disabling the post processing in the options, but that only deactivated the bloom. I used the original resolution (640 instead of blown up 1280) since that made it a bit more bearable. Another issue I have with the game are the jumping/climbing mechanics which dont seem to work perfectly well all the time. Might need to retry with a controller though.

Fantastic concept, definitely a small gem we found here. Unfortunately, I cant predict whether someone might get over the art style or not.

My run:

Funny I added the Lunar Bundle for Lunnye Devitsy but now recommend it for Wake. Oh well.

So what are the chances of Kentucky Route Zero having a bigger than 25% discount? Or should I just go for it at its current price?

Splice - $3,99 (60% off)

Very slick and interesting puzzle game. I love puzzle games that dont just follow the match 3 formula and actually try something different. Its unfortunately not that long (50 or so main levels), but the idea of dividing cells to make them fit a pattern and making a puzzle game from that is just way too interesting not to mention it. Fantastic soundtrack too btw, and it also has a demo on Steam you can check out. In a bundle with 2 other interesting games (Auditorium and Fractal:Make blooms not war) for $5,99.

Finally grabbed that game in that bundle. Looking forward to playing more levels later.

I'd say its not too unlikely to get a daily eventually.

Altitude - looks like a game for me.
Does it have an active multyplayer scene?

Just opened it and saw a few ongoing matches, so I guess people are still playing it.

It's pretty obtuse in its presentation, favouring style over transparency but I've found it worth persevering with. It has a certain charm to it which makes the "I don't know what the fuck I'm doing" feeling worth it.

thomas was alone is ridiculously addicting for how simple it is. that guy who narrates it gets me everytime. i feel like im listening to a story being told. and the music is great.

On a related note, I also tried Auditorium from the same bundle which is a cool little music game that unfortunately shows its browser game roots too much. But Fractals, Make Bloom not war is a pretty cool puzzle game too. Definitely glad I picked up the bundle.

Wake looks great going to get it when I got home. I hope Expeditions: Conquistador win the vote off, Risen 2 will probably win tho.

Maaaan, just played a bit more Fractals and that game is pretty darn good too. Obligatory Steam thread recommendation:

Fractal: Make Blooms Not War - $2.79 (60% off)

Fractals is a bit more of a traditional puzzle game (basically a "match 7" puzzle game), but the gameplay mechanic of pushing stones outward and building combos is so elegant and straightforward, yet can seem deviously difficult once they add another element to the mix. Fun game. I highly recommend the Fractals + Splice bundle ($5,99) for anyone liking puzzle games.

Recommended it earlier but perhaps you missed it.

The Void has been on sale for $2.50 since the beginning and will continue to be so until the end. Ice-Pick Lodge is a very small, indepedent Russian studio who create some of the most unique and thought provoking games out there. Everyone should at least give the Void a try for the price.

I think the BIT.TRIP games deserve a mention here as well.

I feel a bit of a bum hanging out for daily deals on these indie games I'm after instead of just accepting the discounts already on the table. It doesn't feel bad doing it to a big company but when it's just some developer trying to make a buck... but on the other hand, it's stupid to pay more for something when you can get it cheaper...

if you dont mind taking a risk with £1.74 I can recommend Ace of Spades, especially if you have Xpadder....

Zombie mode is a good laugh, the rest of the game is basically Minecraft COD, but I was having a real good laugh in Zombie mode, as it has that do you Hide or Fight mentality, and I like that..

it is not a play for 8 hours kinda game, but it is so cheap, play for 20 mins here and there seems the best value

Still no trace of a Rogue Legacy discount, I'm a sad, sad panda.

I'm also waiting for a discount on Rogue Legacy. I'll buy it at the end of the sale anyway, but I would like to play it sooner.

Booted up Under the Ocean. Not really my cup of tea, but hopefully my kid likes it. Looks pretty, though.

Can you give some impressions about it? I'm interested in it, but I'm not sure I'll like it and rather not spend money on games I don't think are worth it.

I would really like Expeditions Conquistador to win the community choice as 75% off is a big enough discount for me to buy it, but Crusader Kings II will win no doubt. I hope that Primordia, Incredipede and Conquistador come back as flash deals, because it's rather annoying to see games that already were daily/flash deals winning the community choice again and again instead of other worthy games.

Anyone play Cherry Tree High Comedy Club? I've been kind of interested in it since the giantbomb quicklook. A thread from last year on the game is short on impressions

I played it. It's short 4-5 hours to complete but after you finish it you unlock New Game+. The interactions kinda work like Persona 3 and 4.
