Steam Sale - (Overlooked) Indie Game Deals Discussion Thread

Can you give some impressions about it? I'm interested in it, but I'm not sure I'll like it and rather not spend money on games I don't think are worth it.

Hm, I recommend trying the free original version which has more features and less bugs:

Under the Ocean is a good base for a game in alpha state, but I highly recommend grabbing the free version, and spending your money on other stuff if you arent immediately sold on the premise.

Its a decent game, but I never really warmed up to the gameplay. I prefer the gameplay of Fractal:Make Blooms not War, which I tried earlier today.

I had a lot of fun with Fractal. I got it in an Indie Royale bundle and played it without knowing what to expect and I was surprised how much fun it was.

Oh is there a demo available for Fractal Toma? I can't see one on Steam.

Nope, I always meant to buy Splice anyway, so I finally caved when I saw the $5,99 bundle with Fractal and Auditorium. All 3 are great little games (although the low res of Auditorium isnt doing it any favors), but I am glad I finally picked up Fractal and Splice. If you want, I can play and write up some more impressions on Fractal later.

Thanks Toma but you've got enough on your plate as it is :). Besides, aren't you supposed to be on holiday? Fractal is vaguely on my radar but it's not a priority. I'm sure I'll pick it up in a bundle or from Lord Modbot at some point :).

Critical Mass had been fun for five hours straight, until I got a headache and quit.

Played all of their games and had a great time with each of them. Beautiful and clean visuals combined with an elegant design make this bundle definitely worth its price. As for Auditorium, they've released HD remake on PSN, which is much better than a PC version when it comes to production values.

Why did you get a headache? Did the game ask you to have sex with it or something?

Too much of this:

I played Gunpoint for an hour or so last night.

I like the jump mechanic and my guy looks like a boss hanging on walls. Also knocking someone out of a window is awesome.

But there are things that I really don't like about the game. Controls on rewireing could use some work. I keep trying to break links by double clicking (how I do it with most programs). I was also frustrated for a period until I realized that the direction of the link matters for some reason.

I also haven't experienced much music except for some brief moody jazz.

I'll give it another hour tonight.

PSA: Van Helsing Co-op is Busted
If you are thinking of getting The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing primarily for co-op then do not get it. The co-op is still broken almost two months after release. Games can go anywhere from 30 seconds to 30 minutes before the lag makes the game unplayable for the person that joined. They have made countless excuses and promises on fixing this but the co-op is still unplayable for a large amount of users.

Cross-posting from main Steam thread:
Sang-Froid looks great in videos and has high reviews but no one seems to have played it. Can I get a review from a GAFfer who has played it (in English or French, I'm about 90% likely to buy it just to support Quebec developers)

Cross-posting from main Steam thread:

I followed this game for a good while too, and the general impression I got was that its a fun game, but has quite a bit of jank attached to it in the form of weird animations and the like. Its no Orcs must die polish wise, but apparently has a few neat ideas that seem quite interesting for a game in the genre. If the videos look interesting to you, you probably wont regret buying it.

It sounds awesome. But let me guess...Intel Integrated not supported?

You know that you could get rid of 90% of all of your issues this sale if you had gotten a new notebook before, right? :p Hope you can get one soon.

Gemini Rue is 60% off, and I can't see it going any lower.

As a huge point and click adventure fan, is it worth it?
I don't really like point and click adventure games at all but I enjoyed it despite my distaste for the genre. The setting and story were interesting enough for me to push through the gameplay and it sounds like gameplay won't be an issue for you.

Alright, looking at the last games to add to the OP from my own lists (and games at or above 50% off) and found 5 more that I am interested in adding:

Lone Survivor (played it myself, might write something up tomorrow)
B.U.T.T.O.N.
Cherry Tree High Comedy Club
Patterns
The 39 Steps

If anyone has some impressions, I'd appreciate you posting them here.

Cherry Tree High Comedy club is about this girl trying to start a comedy club but does not have enough members to do so. The main character will meet a handful of people along the way that are potential recruits and will essentially go on outings with them (or dates, pretty much) to increase the relationship level with them. Once you hit a certain point (or max it, I can't recall) you can recruit them so that they're committed to helping your club start. From what I can recall, you manage your time spending for the summer between actually going to a summer job, social outings to increase relations, library time to learn stuff (used for outings), and getting your summer homework done.

It's basically a dating sim to look less like a dating sim. I never finished it either because something shiny showed up at the time and I got sidetracked. I'd say it's a charming game but unlikely to sway those who dislike all things dating sim related because it's clearly there without the mushy stuff.

You managed to talk 4 lines about a game without saying whether you liked it or not :p

Edit:Thanks for the 4 clarifying edits ;)

Yeah, it's pretty great. Very interesting setting and good story, and most of the puzzles aren't obtuse - I think I only had to look up one or two things, but that always happens to me in adventure games, and I think it was something small that I missed.

Personally, I think it's okay to pass time. I don't dislike it but I'm also not motivated to go back to it. It's really one of those it is what it is things.

B.U.T.T.O.N. is great fun, but you need some good friends, since there are some sex-related jokes/challenges, so beware.

Lone Survivor is an interesting take at the survival horror genre, but I don't like the grin on the face of the main character (I am joking), and the genre in general (I am not joking).

I just played the first level of Capsized and it is pretty damn gud :D. I suck at the controls though! :'( My mind and fingers really don't get on with kb&m too well yet thanks to so many years of console gaming. Still I'm [slightly] more adept at it than blasted Surgeon Simulator 2013 so there may be hope for me yet! Anyway, Capsized has given me a very favourable first impression so it's now firmly in my gaming "in tray" :D.

Oh I didn't appreciate that those games were by the Splice devs! Both are now added to my Wish List :). I may suck at Splice but like it enough to know that I should like the other two too.

I enjoyed what I played of Sang Froid, although I never got around to finishing it. From what I played, I felt there was a decent balance between trap setting, and directly engaging the enemies; you can't just ignore traps in favour of directly attacking everything, especially in the later stages when the map is much larger, and I never felt it was guaranteed that I could rely solely on my traps without completely destroying my savings, with most traps being single-use. My savings were usually tight, especially on nights where new threats were introduced; I remember finding myself at a point where if I could have held out another night or two, I probably could have bought a particularly nice silver axe, but if I hadn't caved and bought the most basic option I could afford, my face would've been eaten that night.

I also got a kick out of the music.

Binding of Issac, heard a lot about it, never played it. What makes it so good? I know it's from SMB's devs so that gives me a good idea of difficulty and sense of humor.

Forgot to mention here but The Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav is pretty cheap, bought without thinking twice since I've been interested in it since it came out.
