Dark Souls is the worst PC port I ever played.

Considering this thread is on GAF, it's kind of spooky that this guy was apparently ignorant of DSfix/DSCfix. I wonder how many people bought this game and suffered through it without these great fixes.

Is DSfix hosted in multiple places? I hope there is some way to know whether most people played the proper version of this game or not.

Yeah I always think there must be thousands of people playing it vanilla and maybe even with a keyboard and mouse. *shudder*

I can forgive From for not making a good port. But since then the game has been patched twice on the PC. I kinda find it hard to forgive the fact that they could/should have integrated this fix into one of those patches.

Still, all things considered. I am just happy the game is on the PC. Great games deserve to be played by as many people as possible.

Guys, quick, someone should inform the OP about DSfix.

And expect him to download and open a .zip file, extract its contents into a specific folder, then edit a few lines in a text file? Not everyone has a PhD in computer science, dude.

This is my feeling on the matter as well. Reading a great work of literature as a cheap paperback instead of a leather-bound copy with gilded pages doesn't diminish its value, even if the fancy copy is what you're used to.

Exactly, I don't understand why people are defending this.

I made a similar thread like this last week and after playing around with DSfix and tweaking settings a bunch the game is running gloriously. This is the best version I've played and truly and amaizng game.

But there is no excuse for releasing this game when a such a simple fix from a user community mod was available (thank you durante).

His bitching later excluded, I don't know why people are getting mad at him for not realizing he needed a fan patch to play a game properly. I knew about it, a lot of people knew about it, but that doesn't mean everyone that sees it on a Steam sale would know about it.

Should he have googled it? Probably.

The only way I knew I was missing out on anything was because of GAF and my knowledge of the fix. Coming from the 360 version I was already happy with the better IQ and stable frame rates, but hey I guess it's easier to bitch and pretend the game is some how unplayable.

a crappy port means the game is crap! i totally understand you OP!

Not sure if sarcasm, but Dark Souls on PC is not a crappy port in the sense that the game got worse, since having a better framerate improves several areas of the game dramatically.

That's a problem and should not be the case. I don't blame anyone at all for not wanting to support bad ports that require fan fixes to be good.

Its not really, but probably like 90% of PC games, port or not I tweak/mod anyway because its apart of PC gaming and one of the things I love about it. I can change shit in the ini files if there is something about the game I dislike...its like a meta game... for every PC game...
Yes the game is a little shitty without the fix, but not taking 10 minutes one time to make it the best version of the game is ridiculous...

The bitching after being shown the solution is what got him the heat. People are giving him shit for refusing to install a fix that would just take minutes.

OP, just install it. It's worth it.

Good game with a below average computer port then.

Yes, I agree that it falls short of most PC gamers' standards. Dark Souls is a good enough game that I can put my normal expectations aside, and I think other people should try to as well.

Luckily, this isn't a problem any more thanks to Durante's efforts.

Love the game to death, but still the choice to put GFWL in the game makes me so angry at times. I can get the game to run just fine with zero problems, but my friend who has Win 8 cannot get the game to start at all and we have tried so many things. Just seems like a lost cause and a waste of money on his end.

If the game can't work outside the box, fuck that I'm just going to uninstall the game and put in my crap category on steam and forget about that POS.

You are the worst OP on GAF. Congrats. Lol

Download the fix, fix your game in under a minute, and stop acting like a child :p

It plays on W8, but the other problems make it not worth playing.
Dude, stop.

Actually the problem might just be your /system32/ folder. It gets bloated and might prevent some games of running properly. Delete it and you should be fine.

It is simple really. He just didn't feel good about supporting a game that needs a (fan)fix to be playable (not quite the case).

It is just a principle of some people. It just doesn't hold up with most here.

the solution is often used as an excuse to justify From's initial offering which is, in a word, unacceptable. It's not something gamers should accept in terms of a port.

Not even 10 minutes. The instructions are simple and laid out really well. Usually I don't fuck with deep stuff for mods...I like to just drop in and go. This time I decided to play around with it and look at that, it was easy.

I get why someone would be ticked off over a shitty port, but I mean...it's an easy fix.

Exactly, I don't understand why people are defending this.

No sane person is defending the bad port.

We're trying to give you a solution that'll make most problems go away, and make some other things better than they would have ever been.

Pull your fingers out your ears

It's not acceptable, shame on From/Namco, but the game is awesome so the DSfix offers the solution of letting you play an awesome game at its best. As opposed to not. That's as simple as it is.

Namco should pony up some dough, pay Durante and integrate DSFix into the actual release. The game is a mess without it.

I'm not downloading any fix for this game, it would mean I supported this shitty product which I don't want to.

Now your just being silly. I agree its a bad pc port but the community has fixed it and it runs great and looks beautiful. I would tell anyone interested in getting the game to pick up the pc version if they have a pc that can run it and download the dsfix. Its the superior version of the game imo. You shouldn't deny yourself an amazing gaming experience just because you don't wanna download something that would take like 5 minutes to download and install do you.

Also, I've played much worse ports than this, SR2, GTA IV when it first came out, Fable 3 had some of the worst screen tearing I've seen in a while and the game dropped frames like crazy when there was more than 3 enemies on the screen. So there have been worse.

yeah well I did add sweetfx and some mods on nexus too so...but yeah it was painless... but stuff like that is fun for me... Hell I tweaked Bioshock Infinite for like an hour before I started playing it...

There was bitching on the front page.

There really should be DSFix bot that scans for "Dark Souls PC" and replies the post with "have you tried DSFix?"

Come on OP, if you are gonna whine about something whine about how GFWL sucks.

Install it takes minutes to install DSFix and Xinput Wrapper for PS3 controller to enjoy the best version of Dark Souls minus the goddamn GFWL

I don't think anyone would disagree with you here. People are just saying that there's no sense in depriving yourself of a great game because the fix is so simple and thorough.

Fully agree. I highly doubt I will ever buy a From Software game ever again due to this port they did. I don't give a shit that the community had to fix it, there is no excuse to release a game in that sort of state.

Oh great, now we have two of these guys

what guys?

I agree, if you've already paid for it you're only hurting yourself, I own it and have played it with dsfix and it's fine to play like that.

Admit it, you didn't like the game anyway.

No serious person wouldn't grab the opportunity to play this after he has already bought it.

That or you are at a very young age judging from your reaction.

Dark Souls is a very well designed game that was released in a playable, relatively bug-free state, which puts it far ahead of many PC releases on a purely functional level.

I am getting regular drops to 15 FPS and its a bit annoying.

It will be constantly 30 then drop exactly to 15 for a while and then back to 30. Havent installed the fix because my PC is shit and I would probably just run it in 720p anyway.

Does the DSfix give a more stable performance as well as a unlocked framerate / higher resolutions? Might actually do it if it does.

only bad thing with the PC version is that the online component has so many hackers.

Most of the invaders I've encountered have been ill-prepared scrublords whom I treated to a face full of lightning claymore, but I realize that experiences vary.

DSFix can also help that, since you can unlock the framerate and keep the cap at 30, which generally improves FPS and allows the game to run smoothly between 30 and 15 instead of jumping to one or the other.

like what PC games for example?

Any PC game with major bugs? Tomb Raider randomly crashed on me more times in the last week than Dark Souls ever has, and The Walking Dead refused to let me save my game for apparently no reason.

Exactly.

I have no problem with people not buying it because they're unhappy about some aspect of it, but jeez... it's not that bad!

Friend bought Trials Evolution for me over the Steam sale and it ran like raw cabbage. The menus, Uplay, display options, framerate, overly frequent multiplayer drops and crashes, everything. Worst port I've played in a long time.

As long as you had a controller plugged in, the only negative about the vanilla Dark Souls port was the visuals-- for me anyway. Everything else ran fine.

Such bullshit that you can't remove GFWL, not being able to save without it is one of the stupidest things I've encountered in pc gaming.

Save problems were a issue on all platforms, and Tomb Raider ran fucking awesome, plus these released the same day as consoles and nobody had to make a petition to get PC releases.
