Dark Souls is the worst PC port I ever played.

If I install this fix (which I won't) It tells FROM that I agree that their port was shit and the PC community must fix it for them, which is wrong.

Leave it at that.

Nonsense. FROM are already leading on PC with Dark Souls 2, and you already paid for the game. Any opportunity you may have had to make a grand statement is now gone, so install the fix and enjoy one of the best games ever made.

Or don't and keep crying like a child, but I know what I'd do personally.

Without DSFix, it's the 360 version with a better framerate, somewhat worse network connectivity, and the DLC included. (The KB/M controls are bad enough that I like to pretend they don't exist.)

With DSFix, it's a surprisingly nice-looking game that approaches "playable bullshot" levels of gorgeous with enough downsampling, SMAA, and AO.

Buh ah hrrd it wuz wurss uv aww tiem n stuff.

Seriously, when the GFWL part and other Ubi and EA monkeybusiness exists, this is barebones. It's eerily similar in tone and mentality to those who want to change the fundamentals of the game to suit rather than the nuanced, thorough criticisms of the game's fine points.

Where do I fucking begin? I'm playing at 1920×1080 resolution and the game plays in a fucking box, I've seen textures that look like the belonged in a ps1 game, performance is so poor even thought I'm running a i7 with a GTX 670.

Fuck this game, who the hell wanted this pos on PC, From Software should stay far away from making PC ports.

The same reason I quit playing it.

Thank you for this post.. I was not aware on this DS mod.

If DS (a playable, stable game whose worst sin is to be ass ugly) is the worst PC port you've ever had the misfortune of playing, I pray you don't ever get an actually broken, piece of shit PC port.

I actually played for a couple of minutes and then realized that the box resolution made me realize what a huge mistake I made by buying this game, this is the last time I buy based on a recommendation on GAF.

You have that weird issue where the game is displayed in a tiny box in the upper left corner too? I thought I was alone

Nah, the game is in a small box in the middle.

...and you don't want to install the fix because it somehow sends the wrong message to From? You maintain this despite saying last week that you tried to install the fix last week but failed to do so successfully?

Save problems were a issue on all platforms, and Tomb Raider ran fucking awesome, plus these released the same day as consoles and nobody had to make a petition to get PC releases.

Fromsoft are tiny compared to most dev teams and they had 0 experience on PC.

Are you complaining for the sake of it cos Dark Souls was well received?

I love being able to post this.

Tells them what? You already bought the game. They've already admitted and promised to rectify this issue going forward with DS2. At this point, you're 6 months late to a demonstration rally where all the issues have been addressed..have fun yelling at the clouds and picketing by yourself.

This thread & need4speed has provided many laughs.

If you think DS is one of the worst ports of all time you haven't played many ports.

What a joke. You're not sending any messages to From by choosing not to play the game you bought. Or maybe you're incapable of clicking + dragging? Anyway, PC might not be the platform for you. Things like DSFix are the reason PC enthusiasts love PC gaming.

Also this:
If you think DS is one of the worst ports of all time you haven't played many ports.

I bought it on sale, installed it, and booted it up. Unfortunately it doesn't load anything. I'm not sure if it's a windows 8 problem or what, but I've lost my motivation to play it now. Bring on the ps4 so I don't have to fiddle with these things =P

A steam sale? Do you have any other GFWL games that run fine? I had a few of those too that just wouldn't seem to do anything, downloading and installing GFWL separately was the fix.

The game decided to run my integrated gpu because it just doesn't know how to work with optimus meaning even with the fix the game was unplayable until I figured that out. It was the first time I had deeply regretted buying a game until I fixed it.

Combined with all the other crap I have no issue with someone deciding to boycott it. The game was amazing even in spite of it but the port of was god awful and I'd be weary of giving them my money again (I try not to reward incompetence and laziness).

Great thread, thanks for the laughs need4speed.
At least some good came out of this thread.

The reality of the situation.
Hahaha, now I see what's going on in this thread. One of two things: 1. Dude is trolling, wasting everybody's time just because, or 2. He wants to take a "stand" to justify not playing the game because he can't get the fix to work.

Either way he posted in this thread as if he would never and has never used the fix, when that clearly isn't the case.

Yeah, was fun and had some laughs but I'm out, not giving it any more attention because this is just sad.

No... you've already bought the game and supported FROM. Now not playing the game doesn't affect anyone, you made an uneducated purchase off your own back.

FROM have acknowledged they let the community down by A) Not releasing it on PC then by B) Releasing a terrible port that had to be fixed by the community.

The DSFix isn't 'polishing a turd', it's polishing a rough diamond.

I actually double dipped on this game. In April I was struck with the desire to replay Dark Souls on my 360, but was reminded all over again of how much I hated the framerate issues it had. So I impulsively grabbed it again for PC. Fortunately I remembered all of the hullabaloo about the port and quickly found and applied the DSfix mod. It's a bad port, but it will be my goto version every time I replay this game in the future.

OP bitches about flaws in a port that were fixable since the day it was released.

OP bitches about fixes because using them "sends a wrong message" to FROM...after having bought the game.

...

...makes sense.

EDIT: If you want true candidates to "worst PC port ever" you're better off looking at games that even the modding community can't fix, like SR2.

If I install this fix (which I won't) It tells FROM that I agree that their port was shit and the PC community must fix it for them, which is wrong.

Actually, installing or not installing the fix doesn't tell FROM a damn thing. They aren't monitoring your computer, and most certainly aren't monitoring your infantile and ridiculous rantings and ravings here. All installing the fix will do is allow you to play a game YOU bought yourself in the best manner possible, despite the well-known limitations of the Japanese dev in a western PC market that they released their product into because of a vast campaign to get them to do so. Your priggish behavior and big show about telling FROM off is worthy of a sad shake of the head, and nothing more. It's almost as if you actually expected people to join in with you in your quest to not enjoy the game and make the purchase of the game completely worthless to hold onto some embittered idea of personal revenge.

or Arkham Asylum
or Borderlands

Borderlands had an issue with it's FOV what was easily fixed with a .ini edit. I heard people didn't like the Gamespy multiplayer stuff, but I never had an issue.
Other than those issues it ran way better than on the console on my PC.

Batman has GFWL which I definitely wont defend, but the game looked and ran fantastic on the PC.

I ran GTV IV on my old C2D and GTS 250 and performance was pretty good, so I don't understand why all of you are talking about a bad port.

Minimum System Requirements
Windows Vista - Service Pack 1 / XP - Service Pack 3
1.8GHz Intel Core2Duo or 2.4GHz AMD Athlon X2 64
1 GB of RAM (Windows XP) or 1.5 GB of RAM (Windows Vista)
16 GB free hard drive space
256MB NVIDIA 7900 / 256MB ATI X1900

This is literally the dumbest shit I've ever seen on the internet...

In what way? A GTS 250 is the equivalent of a nvidia 9800, so he met the processor requirements and mildly exceeded the GPU.

i considered getting this game on pc during the summer sale but my laptop wouldn't have run it and it needs gfwl. however, the fact that it needs a mod to play properly makes it a pretty shitty port regardless of how well it plays after the fix. big ups to durante for providing the fix. once i play through a bit of my backlog, this one will be a grab for my ps3.

Just because you meet the requirements doesn't automatically mean the game is playable. Especially not GTA IV...

I played it on an old intel core 2 quad with a 250, it was absolutely playable, not at max settings, but certainly higher fidelity then the console versions.

Yeah, I have a 3.16ghz C2D and GTAIV runs like crap.

Fuck no it isn't. The port is still pretty bad and buggy. But yeah, it's not nowhere as bad as some PC ports we have gotten before.
Buggy? What?

I've not had a single crash, glitch or bug in my 25+ hours that I've put in the game. It's smooth.

My only issue with the game is GFWL, no doubt hampering the multiplayer in the game.

Says Saints Row 2, W8 and GFWL runs fine. Thinks GTAIV runs fine on minimum settings.

LMAO

Homie, welcome to the PC era of 2004-2007. Grow the fuck up and be happy it's one of the few games you have to deal with shit like this, cause I'm pretty sure you would of dumped your shitty PC to the trash since a ton of games had to be fixed with patches 6 years ago.

Unless you're fucking around, then good shit, guy. :)

It's a bad port but they had to recode everything from their engine to get it to work on PC. They're not making the mistake again with DS2 or so they say. It's being built on PC first this time around from my understanding. I love me some Dark Souls.

Getting aftermarket fixes for games is hardly supporting a crappy product, it's trying to make the best out of a good game. Vampire Bloodlines, KOTOR 2, etc are all flawed games made better by strong community support.

I also disagree with the "if it doesn't play well with Mouse/KB then it's a crappy port" argument because there are entire genres of games that play better with analog controls (most notably sims) as well as other types of games that don't use analog controls but need a joystick (i.e. fighting games).

Dark Souls is a mediocre port but I've seen worse. A lot of EA racers have 30FPS locks, UI issues, and other port issues. My biggest issue with Dark Souls is the lack of patches to deal with hackers.

Thankfully, the next Dark Souls won't be a port but another natively developed version. I just hope they deal with the hacking situation better.
