Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

I would much rather prefer a more constructive, respectful counter argument rather than a disrespectful reply such as this.

I don't take too kindly to people that talk down to me, simply because I have a different opinion than they do.

chill dude

I just completely disagree, not much more to it.

y'all have a great day now!

The PS3, even to this day, is a massive disappointment. It did not live up to the hype or the legacy of the PS2. Sony's arrogance and insistence on using Cell and pushing the system as a multimedia device put them in a permanent bad spot for the entirety of this console generation. Putting into account the absurd pricing, near non existent support and sheer hubris, Sony alienated consumers, developers and publishers alike. As much as PSN has improved, in spite of the fact how much they've updated the OS and as much of a value PS+ is, overall, I still feel like Sony was playing catch up this whole time. I never got the feeling that were ever ahead, or dominating the competition. Everything they seem to do appears to be a last ditch, half hearted effort. It's like they don't care. They assume whatever they do should be serviceable at best and should be nothing more. It's as if we should be satisfied and grateful for what they put out and not dare be unhappy with the results. Initially, they pitched the PS3 as a console with so much potential, but ever since launch, I have yet to see any of that potential realized in the slightest. With a name like "PlayStation" and with a system as good as the PS3, it's truly a shame how much of it's potential was wasted through out all these years. As for the first party games, as great as they are, none of them are all that memorable. None of them have any lasting impressions and none of them make feel like returning to them. Uncharted, LBP, InFamous, Resistance, Killzone, Ratchet....there isn't a single franchise from Sony that I feel like I'm going to want to revisit five or ten years from now. None of these games have had significant lasting effects on me, or, in my opinion, on gamers overall or the industry. Mario does. Zelda does. Halo does. You get the point. Uncharted? Yeah, great game but what does it do that is unique? What kind of trend does it start? What envelope does it push? Nice graphics? Pretty cutscenes? You take that away and what you're left is just another third person shooter/ Tomb Raider clone. You can basically say this about any game on the PS3 really. Don't get me wrong, I love the system. However, there is nothing about it that will make me reminiscence or convince me that it brought anything of true value to gaming as a whole. And this is coming from someone who loved the PS2 and currently has, and still plays his 60 GB Phat PS3 and has invested countless hours and dollars towards the platform.

Speaking of systems, the Super Nintendo is objectively, the best console ever made. Period. This isn't open to debate. I'm sure Europeans will argue that their beloved Mega Drive was better. Come on. Get real. There will never be a console better than that platform. Super Mario Word 1 And 2, Mario All-Stars, Mario Kart, A Link to the Past, F-Zero, Star Fox, Kirby Superstar, Pilot Wings, Donkey Country 1,2 and 3, Mega Man X 1, 2 and 3, Super fucking Metroid, Earthbound....need I say more? I could keep going. NES saved gaming and put in the ground work for the glory that would be the SNES. All the games I mentioned are near perfect examples of how great level design, thoughtful artwork, memorable music and likable characters and worlds all come together to make experiences that STILL, to this day, influence people who make and play games. I was lucky enough to be a kid, growing up, when the SNES came out. It was in those crucial developmental years that I grew fond of gaming, and now, as an adult, understand why I like the things I like what I consider to be fun and good design. So if you weren't as fortunate as me, or as many other folks here, please, do yourself a favor and indulge yourself. See for yourself, for what I, and many people consider, the true golden age of gaming.

Even though I said earlier that I don't mind cinematic games, honestly, I don't like people who enjoy those games. I don't take their opinion seriously and quite frankly, I really don't think they know all much about what makes a good game. Take the Last of Us. I really don't know why I bought it. I really wasn't all that excited for it. I knew what I was getting into and I knew I wasn't going to like it. But I decided to give it a chance. Needless to say, I didn't finish it. I don't like games that try too hard at being serious whole trying too hard to be something they are not. The Last of Us tries to be a somber, interactive movie, but between cutscenes, it's grossly evident that it's really just another, linear, simple stupid, third person shooter, with limited ammo, a rudimentary crafting system and survivor horror elements. It really isn't anything special. Furthermore, I really don't like how GAF loves this game to death. I really don't like the circle jerk mentality that comes along these huge "AAA" games. It's as if people feel pressured and feel obligated to like something simply because everyone else does. People want a sense of belonging and a desire to be part of a conversation while something is relevant and trendy. You dare say anything bad and you have torches and pitch forks coming in your direction. Yeah, I know, I come off as "that guy". That elitist, contrarian douche who just has to hate anything that is popular. The hipster of gaming that wants to like anything that is obscure and do anything that is against the norm. Fortunately, I like to think I don't fit that description at all. I just like to think independently and and be completely honest with myself. The Last of Us isn't a step in the right direction for gaming. I do not wish to see more games like and I hope that other developers don't try to imitate it. Naughty Dog, as talented as they are, should really just stop making games and become a tech house or make animated films. I do not like they direction they are going with their games at all. We don't need more glorified interactive films that totally undermine the medium . Video games have done a fantasic job at evolving without the need to resort to emulating Hollywood's bullshit.

I don't think I could come up with a convincing argument against this. Much as I like the N64 and PS1, even their best games are too bogged down in the perils of 3D infancy. SNES was 2D perfected and never bettered.

Need For Speed: Shift was the BEST racing sim this gen. (It was not GT5 or Forza 4; both of those games were inferior)

The PS3 overall was a disappointment. Despite its strong comeback, Sony's arrogance killed all the good momementum the PS2 had created for it.

BF3 is boring as hell. Bad Company 2 destroys it.

I have no idea why people want to game on a PC when consoles offer the ability to laze on a couch with a big screen TV and the use of a controller.

Upcoming next gen games should all be 1080p 60fps standard - no questions asked.

Third person shooters are superior in every way to first person shooters.

Don't know if this is controversial or not but after trying to play on numerous occasions and watching my friends play(who've been playing for some time), I still don't see what's to like about Puzzles and Dragons. I guess the game just doesn't appeal to me.

Skyward Sword is by far and away the worst Zelda game ever made. Still boggles my mind how the game received over thirty perfect scores from the media.

People only liked Soul Caliber 2 because Link was in it.

Pokémon Ruby was the best Pokémon game. Was sorely disappointed that Diamond didn't retain the same sense of adventure.

The only thing that's aged well about Super Smash Bros. Melee is the soundtrack.

As someone who played and enjoyed the PS2 version of Soul Calibur 2, you're wrong.

Then again, I was the crazy sicko who picked Voldo every time.

I'm not sure how one can claim that Melee aged poorly when there isn't another platform fighter that has beaten its gameplay. Smash Bros 64 is laughably broken and Brawl is slow and cumbersome. Anything else isn't worth mentioning.

Wait, so is Voldo considered to be the unpopular character?

Because I have no qualms in admitting that I think he's awesome.

I don't know if this is controversial but I think Japanese games are better than western games.

Zelda games are boring and really really over hyped.

Pikachu is a bottom tear Pokemon.

The 3DS is the best console of all time with this year being one of the best years for gaming there has been.

F-Zero and Mario cart are the only fun driving games ever made.

I respect your opinion, but damn, this was hard to read.

Even when playing through my TV, I just cannot get into PC gaming. I have a lot of PC games, but no desire to play any of the, ever. Like, I have had The Walking Dead on Steam since the Humble Bundle came out, I bought the PS3 version 2 days ago and have already played through Episode 1. It's not the only example.

I think Unit 13 is one of most underrated games in the Vita's library.

Saint's Row games just aren't fun.

I feel like most indie 2D platformers fail to capture the spirit of the games they harken to. The look is there, but they're generally souless because they're trying to copy a style they have no business trying to copy.

Thomas Was Alone is bad. It really, really is.

If Nintendo didn't realease another game ever, I wouldn't be affected by it and that makes me sad.

People who, in life, say quotes from video games randomly are the worst.

As someone who played and enjoyed the PS2 version of Soul Calibur 2, you're wrong.

In general, I'm just speaking from my perception. People seem to largely associate it with the Gamecube version and there was massive pre-hype for it before it's release. Never heard a peep about it around a month after the game's release so I assumed the appeal wore off until it started popping up in "Best Gamecube Games Ever" lists before the Wii came out.

Sorry if I sound like I'm discrediting your experience, though.

I'm not sure how one can claim that Melee aged poorly when there isn't another platform fighter that has beaten its gameplay. Smash Bros 64 is laughably broken and Brawl is slow and cumbersome. Anything else isn't worth mentioning.

Game just doesn't do it for me anymore and I got tired of it years before Brawl came out. No matter how many times I give it a quick spin it's just too light and fast and not fun at all. :/

In all honesty I probably could lodge all the "too light and not enough power in attacks" complaints from Brawl against it, lol.

Castlevania 64 isn't really as bad as everyone says it is. It's actually quite enjoyable. I've beaten it several times.

Starcraft is broken and pales in comparison to Warcraft 2.

Final Fantasy VII is the most overrated game of all time.

Ocarina of Time is the second most.

Mass Effect tries too hard to be an RPG and a cover-based TPS, and fails miserably at both. It is a boring slog-fest.

Jak & Daxter and Ratchet and Clank 2 are both far superior to Mario 64 or Sunshine, though Galaxy handily puts all other 3D platformers to shame.

I don't like snacking while eating. It makes the controllers greasy and sticky :/

*raises flame shield*
So...are the controllers what you're snacking on, or what you're eating,...or, well, how are the controllers getting greasy and sticky during this gluttony?

(I must admit I've never tried snacking while eating, so maybe I'm just missing something obvious.)

On Topic: I find people who are constantly snacking while eating, or eating while snacking (shudder), to be detestably insufferable. No way will I let them use my controllers anymore, now that I've got this bunch of awful images firmly lodged in my brain.

Also, people who don't realize that ps4 & the xbone aren't next gen (hint: they're current gen-yet to be released) make terribly, terribly funny posts to read. Especially when they haven't even gotten around to transitioning away from calling ps360 next-gen yet. When you're talking about something that would actually be next-gen, they're mind is like 2 generations behind!
Funny, but hard to have a conversation without much confusion ensuing.

Oh, one more: I don't see any reason why handheld systems don't or shouldn't have their own, separate, classifications of generation.

My controversial opinions

DKC 1-3 Best Games of All Time

Sony is the root of a lot of problems in gaming

However, as much as I dislike Sony, my dislike of them is no where near my hatred of MS.
-Crappy OS
-Windows 8 and Vista
-Xbone
-Most Importantly they killed Rareware

Hooray, controversial opinions.

- WRPGs as a whole has been regressing.
- Mass Effect 2 as an RPG was mediocre.
- Borderlands 2 is overrated.
- Gears of War is sleeping pills in DVD format.
- Fallout 3 is overrated and New Vegas is far better.
- Half-Life 2 is overrated as hell and definitely not GOTYAY.
- As a person who never played the originals DmC: Devil may Cry's only saving grace was its visuals.
- Indie 2D platformers with "retro" pixel art are just as generic as Call of Duty clones.
- Telling me a game is cinematic usually tells me the game is a boring corridor with a story that would be better as a movie.
- God of War was a massive borefest.
- Skyrim > Oblivion

- Sengoku BASARA is an infinitely better hack 'n slash series than Dynasty Warriors.
- Pokemon designs in generations 1 and 2 were better than later generations.
- Skyward Sword is terribly dull.
- Skyrim is overrated and has too much openness, not enough plot direction. Also, it's ugly.
- Atlus is an overrated company that needs to fire whoever makes their UI for any of their games. Their character designs suck. Their games feel annoyingly low-budget. They need to balance their games better.
- Noctis's old design was better.
- Fire Emblem: Awakening has the shittiest map design (gameplay-wise, not aesthetics) ever. IS got too greedy with their DLC. SpotPass characters blow, and I don't care if they're free if they look like shit.
- Apollo Justice needs to die. So do Trucy and Klavier. Athena looks annoying but not sure how she'll turn out. Design-wise though, I'd rather have Kay or Maya back.
- DQIX's single-player mode sucked ass. No interesting characters, and a shaky plot at best.
- Character customization in plot-heavy games suck.
- SFIV's gameplay and aesthetics are leagues behind Third Strike's. Really miss those gorgeous and smooth animations that don't take a million years.
- Virtue's Last Reward sucks compared to 999.
- Casual modes aren't a good thing. Optional, yeah, but takes away tension from games like Fire Emblem and Etrian Odyssey, which rely on it to make the games even more fun. Without the tension, just feels like mindless grinding. Some people never experience the real thing because they shy away from the "hardcore" mode.
- Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon was pretty fun. The portraits weren't ugly, either. Just different. I prefer its gameplay to Awakening's.
- Golden Sun is bland.
- Okamiden blows.
- Fate Stay/Night is a sexist, high school hentai game that direly needed a better writer. Fate/Zero is better in every sense in terms of story, writing, and characters.
- FFX-2 is fun.
- Kingdom Hearts franchise is an abomination.

I respect your opinion, but damn, this was hard to read.

Why do you say that?

I like Skyward Sword more than Majora's Mask.

The Galaxy games really aren't that great.

I think a blood vessel popped in my head. I don't know how I'm still alive.

It's not cool to lie.

O friend, you jest but have yet to experience the pain of coming home thinking about turning on your playstation only to see your girlfriend entrenched in a final fantasy game.

O ok its cool ill just be over here on the computer, constantly staring at the TV waiting for her to get off dum dee dum.

Gamers have an infatuation with Japan
You never even gave DmC a chance
People hate on BioWare just to hate on them
Nintendo almost never makes good decisions
People get mad at Microsoft for doing what Nintendo does
PC circlejerkers are the worst

How the fuck is EA the worst company in America when Comcast exists?

I have never and will never understand the love for the unreal engine. Every game made with the engine will include texture pop in,wet/shiny surfaces, muddy textures and a strange piss tinted fog/filter. If not all of these,at least one of those things will come packed into an unreal powered game.Foliage looks like shit in unreal engine too.
The 360 only has a handful of exclusive titles now, none of which I give a fuck about.
Halo series is inferior to Killzone series.
Killzone 3 is the best online fps of this console generation.
Gears of War isn't a good game/series .
It's extremely overrated both gameplay-wise and visually.
The excuse I don't play "plug in title" for the story is something I tend to hear a lot from friends who happen to be xbox-centric.
Onimusha is the last good series Capcom has had the blessing of ever making. Why they choose not to touch it is a goddamn mystery to me.
On that note the Dead Rising series has got to be some of the clunkiest quasi open world games I've ever played.

I posted in this thread like a year ago, but I'll add new ones.

-I don't know if it's because I didn't play it when it came out, but I feel that Half Life 2 is the definition of an average game, with the only standout being level design. The characters feel lifeless, as does the world. Combat is clunky and tedious.
-Fallout 3 is the greatest western RPG ever made. New Vegas is really good too, but not quite there.
-Aside from Morrowind, I find the Elder Scrolls franchise boring.
-Pokemon is an incredible franchise, and is not "just for kids" as many people say
-Super Smash Bros. Brawl > Melee
-Rockstar is an average developer at best.
-Final Fantasy Tactics is the best videogame of all time.
-With the exception of 3, Gears of War is a typical TPS franchise.
-Heavy Rain is an emotional experience with compelling characters (even with the plot holes)
-Assassin's Creed III is not a bad game
-Bioshock Infinite, while not an awful game, was a disappointment, taking away many things that made me enjoy Bioshock in the first place
-Sonic Generations is the best in the series
-I doubt this is really controversial, but Halo 4 was so bad that it turned me off of my favorite series and Microsoft in general
-This generation is in the top three for best all time
-Saints Row The Third co-op is one of the best experiences you can have this generation, and serves as the prime example of games that just want you to have fun

Not sure how controversial this is but eh....

This generation will not be "won" by graphics. Although the PS4 does have a clear edge on this, this will not play much of a role outside of console wars. Consumer perception of pricing value (will the average consumer consider the Kinect worth $100??), services, and exclusives will determine the "winner".

Marketing will play a huge role in determining this perception (how come I never saw ads other than a few online ones touting the benefits of Playstation Plus? Its obviously a great product but how many people who don't visit forms and gaming sites really understand it?) I think PS4 currently has the edge on most of these, but MS hasn't even really started advertising the X1 outside of web ads and the PS4's perceived value in relation to the X1's could dramatically shift once that Microsoft money starts playing ads non stop during all the major sporting events and popular shows.

I had the same reaction you just had:

Oh. Well, sorry about that. It really amazes me that people think TLOU is the best game this gen. I mean damn....alright then. If ya'll say so :P

Here's a quickie:

If you think this console gen is the best generation of gaming ever, quite frankly, you don't know what the fuck you're talking about. Sure, there are a ton of greats games and interesting new IPs introduced. But to say that the past (nearly) eight years of gaming were the best ever, is proof, to me that you're either A) very young B) haven't been playing games for that long or C) have terrible, undeveloped taste. Everything this gen is an iteration of the past. That's not a bad thing. That can be said about any previous cycle and all new ones to come. Anyway, graphics and visuals surely got better. Performance really didn't improve though. In fact, that probably went backwards. Cooperative and competitive online multiplayer is standard. Those are neat but not necessary for a game to be good. But let's face it. Overall, games have become watered down and most of all, there is a much greater disconnect between the stories that are being told and game play that drives them. They are two separate, discordant entities that don't work well together. It seems that one is merely there to fill up space in effort cover up just how flawed the other component is. Most stories and game play experiences this gen are serviceable at best. For the most part, nothing really stands out to me. Neither game play nor the characters, settings or plot in most games this gen have left lasting impressions. Few games convinced me to really give a shit. Maybe I'm getting older. Maybe I'm more jaded. Maybe I'm just an asshole who expects to much from a video game. Not all games this gen are bad. There are a few shining stars, but not nearly as many as there used to be, and not nearly as many as there should from a generation of gaming that is heralded as being so magnificent.

People often then more have ridiculous double standards. Often confronted with their broken logic, they will never ever budge or correct themselves. They rather keep digging the hole deeper then admit that they are wrong. I can never take anybody that resorts to that serious, because they will try to find the most insane logic to justify an already broken logic. This is the reason why threads become cesspools, filled with hyperbole and everything is made a mountain out of molehills.

Alan Wake is legitimately a bad, boring game. The story is crap, the combat encounters are poorly designed, and the whole thing is just severely lacking in anything fun or interesting.

Keyboard and mouse>controller for FPS's

That's the opposite of controversial.
