Dragon's Crown Thread of Import Impressions and Elf

It's really not that bad, yeah. I'm shocked to see people acting like it's a severe issue or a deal-breaker, even factoring in the hyper-sensitivity of the core crowd.
Um, I don't mind the occasional dips, but when there are 2-3 wizards in the party and each of them starts using the storm skill/lightning rod's attacks etc. at once, fps really go down.
Honestly, I would be surprised if it didn't given the amount of effects on screen.

In other news, prices on Amazon.jp are hilarious.

So has anyone decided to cancel their preorder or wait until the game is cheaper due to this thread? Because I'm thinking about that now. Some of the things posted in here have killed my hype just a bit, and I feel like my money might be better spent elsewhere for the time being. Not writing the game off completely, just feel like I might want to hold off for a while and pursue other games.

I've seen a few people whining because they don't know what to expect from a 2D brawler, and another few people whining about getting good loot upgrades too often. That's it.

So, no.

Nope. Nothing has killed my hype in the slightest. Can't wait until next week.

By the way, Caerith, the official thread should be up this week, right? If you need any help on anything, let me know.
I've still been updating that Dragon's Crown image album on Minus regularly, so you can look through there if you still need images for the thread.

No. I'm even more hyped due to this thread and looking forward to my PS3 retail purchase and Vita digital purchase.

Nope. Couch co op games are SO rare nowadays.

Pretty much writing the game off in terms of a sequel or other vanillaware/atlus projects though.

If anything, I can say that I was expecting something good, and was totally blown away by what I got. Take that for what you will. *edit* Also... if this floats your boat. I have both PS3, and psvita digital copies... and I'm stilling planning on getting physical copies for each.

Cross-buy is great PR for Sony, a legitimate selling point for indies, and throwing money away for everyone else.

I don't think that's true at all. Not many people are going to buy Dragon's Crown for both PS3 and Vita. It's going to be a small minority. You stand to get a lot people into buying it if you make it cross-buy and cross-play though. Hell, even people who don't have a Vita will view it as a better value proposition.

We gonna Co-op Karst? :3

It's a beat em up with diablo elements why would I want to even think of canceling my pre-order?

People seem to always be unjustly hard on Vanillaware games. This is mostly due to them reusing assets and not making the most advanced games in the world. Some people shat on Muramasa during the import phase as well.

The Diablo element in this case is generic loot, like in D3. :(

I think it's a good, but deeply flawed game. Would buy a sequel in the future.

Wouldn't also the replaying playing the game in a newgame plus way sorta be like diablo as well?

To me this sounds like the D&D arcade evolution I've always wanted

OT goes up tomorrow. I've been F5ing your album daily, actually. (I don't suppose you could figure out how to extract the idle animations from the JP website? Like, the Sorceress twirling her hat when you click on her on the Characters screen.)

Something being crossbuy doesn't make it a better value for me, as someone who doesn't own a Vita. It's like getting a 10-gallon tub of submarine polish, doesn't do me a lick of good.

And, this isn't really the place for this discussion, but how is the Vita's health in Japan? Because here, it seems to be a neglected console whose "killer apps" are either ports of older Atlus games or games already on PS3.

Could be hype burnout. If Vanillaware hadn't announced this game two years ago, perception would be pretty different.

Can I play online coop with PS3 players using a Vita?
Unfortunately, no. You and Sif can only play together on the same platform.

Ah, nice. Can't wait to see it. Good to know you've been checking my album regularly, too. Hah.

I spent about an hour or so a few days ago trying to figure out how to rip them from the site, but I never managed to figure it out. The best I could do was get a single frame out. The rest of the animations are in a sprite sheet together, which can easily be accessed. Maybe I'll try ripping the idle animations again in a bit, though.

Things would be a lot easier if Atlus could be bothered to update the NA site from time to time.

Looking forward to coop with you too, Karst. :)

Tangentially:--
how? I placed the pre-order on vgp too but still - This product will be in stock on Tuesday 06 August, 2013.
not sure how would it be shipped before that.

anyway looking forward to play this game, looks great. I'll be up for some co-op if someone wants to add me.

Nope. I'm all aboard on this one. Nothing stops this hype train. This genre and I go back to my childhood when playing games like X-Men and Turtles in Time in a (then local, now closed down) arcade, as well as a lot of TMNT Manhattan Project on my father's NES. I'm liking how this game's turning out so all of that factored in my hype's pretty much out there.

Who else wants Busty Peasant DLC?

She doesn't have many attacks, but she can dodge EVERYTHING.

I was wondering about that:

now i feel down.
He barely played past normal difficulty by the looks of what he has posted. Don't take what he says to heart.

Anyone who has played a VanillaWare game knows that the hardest difficult is hard. Odin Sphere is the only game I have ever set to "Easy" and not felt bad about it.

Any Dragon's Crown player here will tell him the same thing, but ok.

I guess I'll bow out of this thread because I'm saying negative things about the game.

It all really depends on the level difference. If it's big, the enemies will hit harder, but you can grind that out.
It's not like enemies/bosses get new, super hard mechanics later on.

I don't dispute your experience at normal difficulty, but unless you have beaten it on the hardest difficulty, I don't see how you can claim the gamr is too easy. It is just basic sense.

How do you know?
Because I've played normal and hard and both were hard only when enemies were 10 levels above me?

Plus the game allowing you to grind enough for it to be easy doesn't mean that it's a cakewalk. You can do it on lower level and it will be hard enough.

Because I've played normal and hard and both were hard only when enemies were 10 levels above me?
So you only played 2/3 difficulties, and thus do not know what lies beyond.

That also assumes that the usual VanillaWare hidden 4th difficulty does not exist, too.

1. I've played half of Hard and it's easy to the point where I've lost interest in the game.

2. After scanning the trophy list here there is nothing that you can't grind for.

Examples

"Deal over 100,000 damage in one strike" is you grinding until your weapon and skill does that much damage.

"Clear a round without taking damage" is you killing Normal mode enemies with one attack. Being overpowered; the result of grinding.

Enemy level change which will be the same like from normal to hard. I know that because of the dungeons difficulty on hard and the level cap rise.

What XP/loot based RPG isn't easy with grinding?

What makes this especially easy though is that you gain enough EXP for a level up after one round. Each dungeon is short, so you'll gain levels fast. In addition, if you choose to continue your adventure after each round, you gain a bonus EXP % modifier, which just grants you more EXP.

I gained 5 levels after one quick adventuring session. It won't take very long to reach level cap, and with the generic loot system you'll get stronger and stronger as you complete dungeons.

For the record, I don't dislike the game. I do like it. Just being honest here having actually played it.

I guess when it comes to being satisfied with Dragons Crown you can be either a. or b.

A. Being the player that wants a good brawler that will last around 10 hours or so depending, with loot, leveling up, etc and is done with it for awhile, picking it back up later to go through it again on hard.

or

B. The player that wants this to be an uber challenging, Diablo like dungeon crawler, hack and slash getting better loot, uber loot, and facing harder challenges with rare drops.

Personally I think it mixes up the two genres very well but I can see people really not appreciating how easy it can become, and lacking in challenge, yet I know my first time trough most of the second half, the game had me needing to retry a few battles, or level up a bit. It will be very interesting to see what the general thought on the game is, but personally its the best Vanillaware game in my opinion and now joins the ranks of one of my all time favorites (if not my favorite) brawler.

Can you recommend a version at this point? I had the PS3 version pre-ordered, but then I cancelled for the Vita version after reading some of your comments in the thread. Hopefully you still feel the same?

Well I've got 15 hours now under my belt and most of the has been spend with the PS3 version. I love the portability of the Vita version and it really feels like a perfect game for on the go! That being said I love the visuals on my tv and couch co-op. The moving the pointer around is annoying mostly when trying to do it during battle, otherwise no big deal. This is much easier on vita, though slowdown is more prevelant in it, nothing major imo, but it still there.

Honestly either way you go, your going to have good time. Also I'm technically still trying to beat the game. I have one more item to get and then face the final boss. I have done plenty of side quests, and most of the main storyline, and yes sitting at 15 hours. So the game's length is what you make of it really.

Okay, thanks. I don't mind a little framerate droppage for a portability trade-off.

This entire post is pure nonsense. Plenty of games have "clear a round without taking damage" without necessitating grinding. That's what skill is for. Special circumstances, such as the Elf's backstab, can lead to big damage in one hit. These are special condition trophies to work for, they don't inherently mean that the game is beaten by grinding.

Trophies like this suggest that the game remains difficult at high levels:
Defeat the Ancient Dragon within 4 minutes on Infernal.

And you still misunderstand. Game CAN be beaten by grinding if you do it like Kyoufu said. It doesn't mean that you HAVE to grind to do the above (except for the damage with some classes, obviously).

About the Ancient Dragon trophy, if he doesn't suddenly become a huge damage sponge, that will be a piece of cake for the casting classes.
