Is the Valkyria Chronicles series dead?

I really like this series. Is there any hope that Sega will make any more installments in this series? I know that it had a hard time financially. First one saw disappointing sales and went to PSP. Second one saw even poorer sales so the third wasn't even localized.

Is there still a chance that this series can come back? I'd hate to think one of my favorite IPs this gen has died. Even if it doesn't have the budget to be back on consoles like PS4, maybe Vita? Vita could use a game like VC4.

It's dead

Sega is only producing games in proven IPs for the forseeable future. and Valkyria Chronicles was far from that it seems

Yes. Maybe has a card game on iPhone. See previous Question. And No.

In that order of your questions.

The problem is that it doesn't really have a good place to go at the moment. Even the PS3 would be a risk now as we move into a generational transition. I think it's very possible we'll see it again, but not for a couple of years.

I guess that's me trying to be optimistic.

if Bayonetta 2 sells well, Nintendo and SEGA will team up to make Valkyria 4 on Wii U.

I have to believe in something

Vita? :(

This is basically what happened to the idea of a "Type 1," isn't it?

Yes it seems so. Personally as long as it stays on handhelds it is dead to me.

I think Sega should port it to the PC to be honest. I think the series could find a nice home there. I know I would rebuy the first one if it ever found its way to Steam or GOG.

I'm just starting to near the end of the first one, and I've really enjoyed this experience. Looking forward to playing the already existing sequels, and hopefully an eventual next gen one.

Can you blame them? The only SRPG that's been moderately successful on consoles in recent times has been X-COM and Civilization: Revolution if I remember correctly.

Which sucks, because the original PS3 game was excellent. Then it got diluted by the PSP sequels and faded off into the darkness :-(

don't worry, vc4 will shock and amaze everyone on iOS.

Sega, in its restructuring, said it is focusing on four key franchises:

1) Football Manager

2) Total War

3) Sonic

4) Company of Heroes (Relic)

Everything else is either:

A) Very small / low budget

or

B) Oriented for the arcade

So for an AA IP like Valkyria Chronicles, that means only one thing: it's completely dead.

VC 2 on the psp is really good too, but sadly the psp is a pirate haven so that sums it up for the sales.

VC4 on Vita wouldn't surprise anyone at all, not sure why you think that wouldn't be possible(especially when you consider the publisher is the one of the biggest supporters of the platform).

Sega said that VC2 and 3 had to be on PSP since it cost too much to make a PS3 version. The VITA is closer to the PS3 in power yet sells worse than either the PS3 or PSP. Ergo....

That doesn't mean it's completely dead, just that they're not focusing on it right now.

VC is AAA franchise? What the hell?

Because Sega would really prefer they make money on this hypothetical VC4.

A franchise can go more than a few years without a sequel without being "dead."

I'm sure Valkyria Chronicles will continue on as a mobile/browser F2P game, at the very least.

The PS3 game tanked pretty hard. I think it's more important how can they sell more copies rather than what platform it's on.

I think they tried turning it into a highschool setting, but I'm not sure if that worked.

So because the Vita is powerful, all games have to look like PS3 games? I'm not buying it(especially when you consider that the best selling Vita game in Japan is a PS2 remaster).

sells worse than either the PS3 or PSP.
Not in japan

Did they not make money on VC2 or 3?

As a side note, this is what Sega is currently doing with the franchise videogame wise: http://valkyria-duel.hangame.co.jp/lp/

If PS4 is a big success, sales wise, in Japan, probably will be resurrected.

Also I don't get the dismissive attitude towards iOS in this thread. If VC were to continue on iPads, I'll buy it.

Edit: never mind, this is why (saw the post above mine).

It's a pity they couldn't expand on the series, but I reckon a decently budgeted VC on PS3 and Vita could do pretty well.

A new one or an enhanced port on 3DS would be a good move. Fire Emblem did really well, establishing the market's there for SRPGs and potentially strengthening the market for them further, and the genre's certainly nowhere near any sort of oversaturation point on the system. Whereas SRPGs were a much, much more crowded field on PSP.

That was only in regards to the western branches of Sega.

Well yeah, there are a couple of stragglers like Phantasy Star Online 2, but those are the main focuses of Sega Sammy in terms of "major intellectual properties" in the Amusement Center division. It's all about streamlining around profitability, and Western IPs have made Sega a lot of money.

Everything else is small / smartphone-related / relatively low budget (like a vocaloid game).
