Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles Releases Sept 30, 2025

Yeah and unless you're the type of player that's going to self-handicap yourself just for the fun of it, it really starts shifting how the game is played in Chapter 2. Don't forget most of them also cause status effects.

No doubt. Even if they had a 10% damage nerf, a 1 turn cooldown, and an MP cost of 20, they'd still be some of the best skills in the game.

I'm not a fan of this AI upscaling era either. Sometimes i think it looks smeary as hell and other people say it looks awesome and crisp. 🤷‍♂️
I guess it's like 4K movie releases. Some people are fine with DNR use, i hate it.
I just played through Grandia 1 remastered, which was AI upscale hell. I'd never played the original on PS1, so I have no basis for comparison or nostalgia, but the smeary/smoothness was viscerally uncomfortable.

I was thinking about this, my wish for this game is to see the following:
  • Rebalancing of some of the games roughest spots, especially for newer players. Things like the City of Dorter slapping new players, or the buildup to the Wiegraf fight later in the game could be structured much better.
  • Job Class rebalancing. Bring up some of the more worthless classes and make them relevant. While I'm typically not a fan of nerfing things, maybe change or add some new content that can't be absolutely steamrolled by the swordmasters.

I don't think that's a fair generalization of what's driving peoples takes in this thread. Some are being unreasonable, but I don't think a majority is nor are they just nostalgia drunk.

The sprites and environments simply look like they have run through a few filters and called it a day. They are blurry and have weird looking interpolation side effects. I'd go as far to say that the Mobile versions sprites, despite some wonkiness, had more care/effort put into them than what we see here. At least that team took the time to leverage the higher resolution to hand draw in details that weren't there before.

It's not unreasonable to want a remaster of a sprite-based game to have at minimum clean/sharp looking sprites. When they ask $50 for said remaster, I really don't think it's out of line to expect redrawn sprites either.

I get that complaint and I have mixed feelings about it. I think the original localization is a bit too raw and full of errors and should be updated. I'm also of the belief that some liberties should be taken during any localization, because good localization should strive to not only translate the dialog but also capture the original creator's intent of said dialog. Sometimes when translating raw the author's intended feeling is lost.

...but that said, I always felt the Shakespeare WotL translation was silly and over the top. While some may like it that way and think it makes the game cooler, it absolutely changes the tone of the games story and characterization, and is that what Matsuno wanted? Is Agrias supposed to come off as sophisticated royalty with a properly trained tounge? Or a plain spoken tough-cookie knight who doesn't mince words? I'm actually playing through Unicorn Overlord at the moment, and it's very fluffed up translation is giving me the same thoughts.
Blame yourself, or god.

Can it process spells higher than 10fps that plagued the psp version

Funny thing is that was just a software issue, you have long since been able to mod the .iso on CFW and fix the slowdown, on PSP hardware itself.

The mobile version has properly running spell animations, so I highly doubt this wouldn't.

Seeing this is good and bad at the same time. Good that the franchise isn't forgotten, and bad that it doesn't get the treatment it deserves...
I just hope that Square don't go this way with Chrono...

Tangentially FF related, didn't want to make a new topic for it.

Nate is saying SE will have an announcement tomorrow (at Keighley's) but it's not Kingdom Hearts IV related.

FF9 Remake here we gooooooooo !!!

FF9 Remake or Vagrant Story and I'll be so hyped

I was waiting for the Steam page to show up. I feel insulted. $49.99 for a game that was released in 1997 and received a translation patch. And a "remastered" version of the same game which arguably looks worse than the original. I'll just play the WOTL PSP version on my Steam Deck instead.

I get being disappointed that it isn't visually better than you hoped for, but let's stop the hyperbole. The classic version is included too if the reworked visuals hurt your eyes.

The timing and price of this leaves a lot to be desired, which is no surprise from Square Enix.

Excited for this, but it comes out days before Ghost of Yotei and is 50 dollars for a nearly 30 year old game with a filter on it. Instead of pricing this to sell, it'll probably live on my wishlist until its on sale or hits ps+.

The price is a thing, but I had 100 hours of fun with Tactics Ogre.

In fact, I beat the game yesterday. I wrapped up my final dungeon save. That boss... it works against everything you've learned. You'd be punished by going in with your strongest and balanced out party. I ended up beating it with Denam and a Dragon. First Aid+Phalanx and Mother's blessing. Whoring for skill cards and banking on Dragon's Scale. I barely did anything and couldn't really die once they procced 100%.

Impressive. You're going to be ready for another time sink coming up.

When I think scraping the bottom of the barrel these days, I think Square-Enix

But if they want to force me to buy the Switch 1 version thinking they are winning, they are wrong. I'll gladly buy the Switch 1 version just because of this. Fuck you, Square-Enix
So...Japan gets a physical version of the Deluxe Edition for consoles but the West doesn't? THE FUCK. Guess I'm importing.

By pre-ordering, you will receive the following bonus items:
・ White Equipment for Ramza
・ Weapon: Mythril Knife
・ Accessory: Spiked Boots (Increase a unit's Jump attribute while equipped)
・ Consumable items: High Potion x10
・ Consumable items: Ether x10
・ Avatars for PlayStation™Network

The Deluxe Edition includes the following bonuses:

・ Weapon: Akademy Blade (Raises a unit's speed attribute slightly while equipped)
・ Headwear: Akademy Beret (Prevents the Charmed status while equipped)
・ Combat Garb: Akademy Tunic (Grants Shell while equipped)
・ Accessory: Ring of Aptitude (Boosts JP earned while equipped)
・ Consumable Items: Phoenix Down x10
・ Black Equipment for Ramza
・ Red Equipment for Ramza

Boost JP ring is basically best in slot. I really hope they get rid of the Boost JP ability because it's a mandatory skill and removes flexibility from builds.

Why playstation only. Where is the switch release. I don't play many pixel games on the tv would love it portable. Or I guess i could just dust off my vita or psp and play there, but those screens are tiny now.

Also why no vagrant story, or damn Sequel?

FINAL FANTASY TACTICS - The Ivalice Chronicles releases September 30th for PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.

I'm hyped because I want to replay this and glad it is becoming relevant again.

I'm pissed over the price. It's just crazy. I won't even be buying day 1 and I'm a huge huge fan. They should have not put in minimal effort if they want to charge this price. There has never been a game more of a ripoff than this one. The Nintendo games are new full AAA games and this is a super lazy port of an ancient game that already had ancient graphics for the time it came out, with VA added. How could they charge so much for this, lol.

It's really not even about money. It's about feeling disrespected.

That said, I'd buy same effort Vagrant Story or FFIX for 80 dollars and not bat an eye. This game is just as good as those games if not better but I have played this one a dozen times and only played those other games once.

If they shadow dropped this game for 20 bucks every gamer on earth would own it now. If they shadowdropped it for 30 most would still buy it. Instead wait several months to think about it and pay the same price a COE33. SE needs some help yall.

The VA goes pretty far for me as a show of effort, hopefully it's serviceable. If only they did new arrangements for the music, like all the Pixel Remasters, the music is unbelievably great in FFT, but having the option for an official Square re-arranged OST would have been great!

I think it will drop to $20-25 within 3 months, but even at $40 I'd buy it myself for the future mods and VA. I expect the PC mods will be more accessible than the PSP mods.

Damn, I normally don't give a sh*t about pre-order bonuses, but this is a pretty good haul.

What is your favorite class to break the game with?
Mathematician?
I liked 2 mathematicians, 1 dancer, 2 mimes. Then every dance + calculated spell gets tripled. For the dance I'd usually use the one that does random status ailments, then switch to the one that permanently decreases enemy speed. The mathematicians mainly spammed Holy, (even better with equipment that absorbs holy, so you can target your own party and heal them at the same time).

Might try something different this time though. Any experience with the Dark Knight job they added in the PSP version? It seems like that job is designed to make generic party members a lot more like the unuqies like Agrias and Orlandu

Dark Knight is a different class who gets a mix up of sword techniques, IIRC.

Overall, the stats of a Dark Knight is counting towards offense. Speed is sacrificed for offensive. HP is also quite lower then usual.

Dark knight feels nerfed, but is simply a neat class because of the different sword abilities.

Onion Knight on the other hand... 👌

You get Gafgarion's abilities. It's very strong, but the time taken to unlock Dark Knight is so long that it doesn't really matter unless you plan on doing end-game grinding for hours.
Within the context of a "normal" playthrough with "normal" playtime, the extra classes like Dark Knight and Onion Knight might as well not even exist.

Yeah I only played the PSP version once and I gave up on Dark Knight because the prerequisites were too much.

How does Onion Knight work? Is that the one that gets stronger based on how many jobs you master? Might have to give it a shot this time.
