Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles Releases Sept 30, 2025

Will buy when the mod releases for OG graphics + VA.

It already includes the option for original graphics.

The adjustments seem pretty minimal. UI overhaul. Tactical view so you can actually pan the archaic camera. Voice acting and difficulty slider.

Wording is weird, doesn't really confirm you can use the VA in the original version. Also calling them "both versions" lead me to think they're not something you can toggle like in the Monkey Island remakes, where you can flip the graphics in realtime. But would be great if it is able to be mixed - wouldn't need to wait extra for the PC release then.

Kazutoyo Maehiro - Director

Hello, everyone!

I am excited to finally share with you all FINAL FANTASY TACTICS - The Ivalice Chronicles! This is a project that began with our long-held desire to revive the beloved FINAL FANTASY TACTICS on modern-day platforms and bring the game to a new generation of players.

We have included two different versions of the game with The Ivalice Chronicles.

The first is the enhanced version.

This version includes updates to the script, which is accompanied by fully voiced dialogue in English and Japanese. It also features numerous new elements, such as additional event scenes, a completely revamped UI, and much more. This is the perfect version for both those who played the original version of FINAL FANTASY TACTICS, as well as those playing for the first time.

Next, we have the classic version.

This version recreates the original game experience in almost perfect fidelity, while also adding some quality-of-life features such as auto-save. The classic version lets you play with the exact same feel from back when the original game was released, offering a reassuringly familiar experience for fans of the original.

I believe these two versions will allow everyone to enjoy the world of Ivalice to the fullest, so I invite both FINAL FANTASY TACTICS veterans and newcomers alike to try out The Ivalice Chronicles!

I was actually a member of the original game's development team when I was just starting my career. Almost 30 years have passed since then, and I now find myself working on FINAL FANTASY TACTICS once again as the director. Several other members of the original team have also returned, including game designer Mr. Yasumi Matsuno—who penned the script—and art director Mr. Hiroshi Minagawa. I feel that what we have created together is worthy of being called the quintessential version of FINAL FANTASY TACTICS!

I hope everyone is looking forward to the release on September 30th!

Hiroshi Minagawa - Art Director

I am delighted to have the opportunity to put this game out into the world once again. When FINAL FANTASY TACTICS was first released, video game graphics were transitioning from pixel sprites to 3D polygons, and our goal was to combine those two visual styles.

For this upcoming title, we tried to respect the feeling of the original while also reworking the game with a modern interpretation. Of course, aside from the visual evolution, we believe the addition of superb voice acting will immerse you even deeper into the troubles and grievances of the pixel-art characters, right down to their very breaths.

We have worked together with a new generation of development staff to enhance and revive the world crafted by the original team of creators all those years ago. Whether you enjoyed the original FINAL FANTASY TACTICS or are still unfamiliar with its story, we hope that you will enjoy this game!

Yasumi Matsuno - Original Script, Scenario Writer and Editor

Nearly 30 years ago, the collapse of Japan's bubble economy engulfed the nation's financial institutions in mountains of bad debt, triggering a wave of corporate bankruptcies, a sudden and extreme rise in unemployment rates, and stagnation of Japanese society as a whole. It was an era when many were robbed of hope, when dreams were measured by their price tag.

Against this historical backdrop, I crafted a story. It was the story of Ramza, a young man who fought tirelessly against the entrenched social class system. It was the story of Delita, who sought to take advantage of this confusion and despair to advance his own social position. It was a story of a peculiar destiny, in which friendship and betrayal intertwine.

And now, in 2025 - a time when inequality and division are still deeply rooted in our society - I offer this story once again.

The will to resist is in your hands.

It looks like they took a smear tool to the original sprites. Deserves a lot better.
As I rewatch it, to me it kind of looks like they are using a weird combination of the original sprites with some of the features of the higher res mobile version sprites......then ran them through a nasty interpolation filter :messenger_confounded:

Forgive me as I grabbed these from the cleanest YouTube videos I could find

Also, I'm not sure if it's just Youtube silliness or not, but there looks to be a weird cross-stich overlay over everything as well. In my screenshot above you can really see it on the grass and on the dark side of the rocks.

This is probably a day 1 purchase for me. Most likely on Steam so I can play it on the go with my wife's ROG Ally X.

DAY F#@$ING ONE! I don't care if it's perfect or not. Mods will fix any developer incompetence. I have been waiting for this for a long time, and it's finally hear!

Now, give me The Legend of Dragoon.

Does the classic mode have the new features but with the old graphics? Or is it literally just the PS1/PSP version?

The new graphics looks really lame...

I think it looks great, filtering and all. The dither pattern they're using makes it look like the game is printed on paper like a story book. I guess that explains the inclusion of that pop-up art book they're peddling in the collector's edition.

Nice subtle use of depth of field as well to give it a tilt shifted miniature look. It's a good solution to upgrading PS1 visuals while still having the sense to include that version too.

That Ramza figure must be worth $190 or something. Wow.

Which is insane considering SE's own Bring Arts line has a Ramza figure that looks even better for half the price:

I just wanted some QoL features to the original game. I'm happy with what they showed off. I've grinded for hours over the years in FFT and there's one thing I was wishing for, QoL features.

I'd expect something like FFX and FFVIII remakes with weird faces.

At least modders would fix their blunders. Both VIII and X have awesome mods to make the game look the way it should have on release. Heck, so did the IX where the Moguri mod blows the "remaster" out of the water. I don't think Square Enix is capable when it comes to remasters. They don't want to overhaul the backend so they can overhaul the frontend. Instead, they simply release it as crap and let other people do their job for free.

If they do to Final Fantasy IX what they did to Final Fantasy VII then I hope Square Enix falls into a black hole. The remakes are an absolute travesty.
I don't expect FF9 remake to have the same scale/scope. We can't be in a bigger disagreement as Rebirth is one of the best game ever made for my tastes.

Why wish it for a remake that is completely different from the original ??. its so bizarre... ff7 remake and rebirth are dogshit remakes.. they might be good games own their own for the ones who liked, but they are not FF7.

I hope every other remake is faithful

Want a new game ? Make new shit...

didnt everyone like Tactics Ogre?

It's the same thing.

Tactics ogre PSP/which is the base of the new game is a different animal than the original SNES PSX Version.

1 War of the lion isn't that different from the original
2 FFT receive innumerous re-releases.

Thats the problem.. Rebirth may be an awsome 10/10 game .. but its a 0/10 remake ... it carries the FF7 name and characters names and thats it.. nothing more, from gameplay to story everything is completely differently

Its like remaking F1-25 into a rally game with the same teams and pilots. Well its an awesome rally game ? Maybe. But its NOT F1-25 anymore, only in name.

The only version I found playable was the original. I wasn't a fan of how they botched the sound effects that were in the PSP version. They sounded muffled and had no reverb. The old English style translation was also awful as well. Judging by what was shown I don't hold a lot of hope this will be handled very well but maybe they will pull off a better remaster this time around. Final Fantasy is treated with such low effect remasters its ridiculous. The Romancing and Saga franchises have had far better remakes/remasters. Its so weird how they do this with FF.

Genuine holy shit moment, been waiting so long for this, one of the GOATs. People will find anything to complain about, I'm cool with it just being an "enhanced" version, praise Matsuno ⚔️

I think people were expecting full graphical overhaul similar to FFVIIRemake or Crisis Core Reunion which is kinda unrealistic since SRPG are too niche for that.

Even if I adore Rebirth I can get behind the idea that it's not a faithful remake.

Ironically OG FF7 was never my favourite FF amongst the originals, FF9 and FF4 are my favourites but 2 of my close friends have OG FF7 as their top FF and they piss and shit all over the remake project because it's not the 1:1 they were expecting. They are not even going to play part 3.
