Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

I think it's childish that people would say their favorite system being the best as fact and not opinion.

Like really people...

Yes I agree. I wasn't even trying to say PS2 was objectively better because saying shit like that is just pathetic. I, personally, liked PS2 better.

Play over streaming tech is all bullshit, all of it. Gaikai, Nvidia Shield, Vita remote play, all useless and pointless. Why spend 40 years of videogames shooting for stable framerates, lag free control then throw it all away and chase a physics defying dream no one asked for? IDGI at all.

Here's the thing; if virtually lag free streaming is ever possible, a streaming device is infinitely more cheaper than the actual hardware it would take to produce high-end graphics.

They walked by and table and noticed that there was money on it.

Red Dead Redemption should have ended with Marston returning to his family...

...and then the rest be used as the beginning to Red Dead Revenge

Gaming culture has suffered as a whole since FPSs left the world of PCs and made the jump to consoles.

Dark souls 2 is an offshoot (probably a very good one.) Made by a secondary team to capitalize on dark souls success and squeeze another source of income outthis current gen while the real team led by Miyazaki works on the proper next gen sequel to the Souls series. DaS 2 is the god of war:ascension/gears of war judgement of the Souls franchise.

The phenomenon of achievements is tired and boring.

Current gen high end PCs are not next gen gaming machines. They are very pretty current gen. The next gen will not arrive until consoles and their customer base make the move.

I really loved metal gear solid 2. Even the raiden parts.

I think gran turimso is the best racing sim to date.

Mega man games suck.

Microsoft entering the game console industry was the worst thing to ever happen to this hobby.

I have been saying this for a while. It helped commercialize video games and that always leads to crap. I always look to music: first Rock went commercial, then Hip Hop. Now look at the music that exists today

I don't like The Last of Us, but is more about the "zumbi" on the game, what a shit thing to have in the game, come on why this days no one can make apocalypse without zombies?! All the rest is coll, the AI is dumb, but compared to the most AI this gen is "ok".

But the multiplayer are awesome, and save the game for me.

Alright...gotta get this off my chest....

Zelda games ARE NOT rehashes of the previous games. You can't tell me, with a straight face, that Zelda games recycle ideas, but bullshit like Call of Duty, doesn't. Of course, it makes perfect sense for every Zelda game to share the same fundamental mechanics. You play as a young boy, with a green hat, who accumulates a bunch of items, solves puzzles and kills monsters in various dungeons. Paying homage is different than just blatantly copying something. Every single game, yes, even the 3D ones have several nuances, that set them each apart. This trend of talking shit about Zelda didn't really get much volume until THAT game was released. Yes...you know...Twilight fucking Princess.

Honestly, if you like Twilight Princess, you have bad taste and don't know what makes a good Zelda game. Alright, it is a good game. A great game in fact, but it's an awful Zelda game. It has no soul or identity whatsoever. It is truly, the only game in the franchise that almost completely relies on all the others to define it. It merely exist, only because of the out cry from Majora's Mask and Wind Waker. People didn't like MM because of the time limit, the lack of dungeons, it was too hard and just so bizarre. No one expected the successor to OoT to end up how MM did. It goes without saying why people didn't like WW, which is utter bullshit. I can understand people not liking the sailing bits, but hating on the cel shading just seems so petty. It's a fantastic entry in the series. The controls are nearly perfect, the puzzles are clever, the music is memorable (who can forget the dynamic tunes during combat) there are places to actually, you know, explore and WW features what is arguably the best iteration of Ganondorf in the entire series. It references OoT quite a bit, but without trying to be like it. Sure, there could be more dungeons and the Triforce hunting was annoying, but WW is in no way a bad game.

Midna and Zant are the only redeeming qualities of TP, up until the point where Zant goes ape shit and you realize he isn't the main antagonist. Link is a dope, and mostly ignored by the other characters, Zelda is dull as hell and Ganondorf is not menacing at all. The story tries too hard to be self serious and dark. Majora's Mask did it much better, both overtly and subtly. But for the game itself, it just isn't all that interesting or fun to look at. Everything is brown or piss yellow. Hyrule Field is a barren wasteland. All of the dungeons shamefully attempt to steal from OoT, but don't do anything better at all. You acquire a shit load of items that you hardly use. Plus, there is little sense of urgency or build up. Like literally, you never get the sense that things are going from bad to worse. You never get the sense that you are getting stronger and that with every dungeon you leave, you are one step closer at saving the world. Even visually...Link never appears to look stronger or look like he's progressed. Besides your hearts, there is little obvious indication that Link has upgraded anything since you first started the game. From the mood, to Link's regalia to your very thoughts on the fate of Hyrule, all is underwhelming and never fully developed. Everything in that game is a half hearted, sophomoric effort to emulate the grandeur that is Ocarina of Time. But all you get is a flat, rip off of a game. Nintendo only made it because people bitched to no end that the two previous major releases were too much of a departure from what Zelda should be. Goes to show you what the fuck those people know.

Needless to say, I hate Twilight Princess...

Um...

- I don't have a problem with the linearity of modern shooters. The old "collect a bunch of random keys in this maze" level design was convoluted and stupid to me. It was nice playing through all of Bioshock Infinite without getting lost.

- I've been a fan of Tekken since I was 5, but I hate that they didn't pursue the multilevel/varied terrain of 4 any further. Bound is a piss-poor alternative that has done nothing to make the gameplay less stale, and just getting rid of it wouldn't help a damn thing.

- I have no problem with fighters being designed to appeal to as broad a consumer base as possible, or lowering execution barriers, as long as it's done right. The FGC is too fickle and schizophrenic for anything but niche titles to be built for them anyway. Plus the games they put on a pedestal (Third Strike, CVS2, Marvel 2, etc.) have no shortage of problems in balance and design.

Am I doing it right?

No, Zelda games are rehashes. Call of Duty, well, I'm pretty sure Activision has just kept releasing the exact same game for the last decade. People still eat it up. It defies logic.

Also, I hate Call of Duty. Flame shield - Activate!

And I don't have a problem with linear dungeons in JRPGs. In fact, I almost universally hate bland, too long and too confusing dungeons. The only reason I'd like one is because it gives the devs a possibility of hiding awesome treasures inside - which they never seem to do. Combine this with way too frequent random encounters and I'm just done.

e: maybe linear-ish, FFXIII linear is as bad as too confusing and big

I agree

TP was bad. There was some good parts like some bosses(even if they were SOOOO EASY) and that Ice mansion/dungeon, but damn it was bad.

To the Moon is the best written video game ever.

Deadly Premonition being the runner up.

I loved to the moon, and cried for hours when the game ended. But I don't think it's in any way the best, it's still great.

imho Mother 3 is the best one yet.

I really really hate that the all-encompassing Zelda timeline is a thing. OoT being the center of everything that happens in the series (with all the classic games being unceremoniously shoved into a "what-if" scenario from OoT's final battle) just rubs me the wrong way.

State your "controversial" gaming opinion here, members of GAF: opinion that you personally held close at heart but at odds against the majority of video game enthusiasts here in GAF or at large.

However, please be careful not to venture into trolling territory please :) And remember, do not herald your own personal opinion as the absolute truth that others must abide to or else.

I'll start:

I consider myself as a huge fan of Legend of Zelda series, and I have played almost all the games available in the series. However, for the life of me I cannot bring myself to like Majora's Mask, a game that I see many fans of Legend of Zelda herald as the best in the series. I personally thought the Ocarina of Time was and still is the more superior version, and Skyward Sword is a vastly, vastly superior game compared to it.

Its game structure is unique, I'll give it that, but for the life of me I just cannot bring myself to enjoy it. Generally speaking I just don't like to be rushed when playing my video game: I like playing games that let me complete it at my own pace (which is why I like most RPGs, I suppose)

So what is your "controversial" gaming opinion, GAF?

GTA IV is the best GTA game so far.

Saints Row is a disgrace to gaming and anyone playing that should be ashamed of themselfs and wonder if its not time to grow up and be a bit more mature.

And the biggest one is STOP the PC BS about female protagonists, its not like its not abundantly clear why females are not allowed/should be in front line combat troops or are able to become elite navy seals or SAS agents.

/rant off and controvers for controvers off :D

I love dismissive, reductive statements based on either ignorance or are the person's idea of an insult.

To the Moon had horrible writing. It read like a my first short story. It had a good theme and was saddening, but it wasn't the writing nor dialogue that made it saddening; it was the overall theme and plot.

Sacrificing your life because you have to take care of someone you love and not getting any emotional support back is hard. I also found the entire procedure of having your memories deleted and artificial ones placed in your brain to be sad too.

I wish the people behind Madden this generation would just die already. Or find new careers. Whichever comes first......

You, sir, are a great man and have my vote for President should you decide to run and make this official state policy that "Madden Devs shall heretofore just God Damn Die already".

Here is one for me I hold close to my heart.

Indie designers, with their attitudes towards gamers and the industry, solidify everything that is wrong with game development. I have no hesitance in saying that they have made gaming an incredibly less exciting medium to be a part in.

The impending death of physical media on consoles is highly exaggerated.

I have no fucking idea how this statement could possibly be "controversial" since the next gen consoles have OPTICAL DISK DRIVES, so it should be obvious to anyone with an IQ above 85 this isn't going to happen anytime soon. AAAAND YET, if I had a nickel for every time some God Damn mouth-breather said "Get used to it! Shitz goin DIGITAL YO!" since the X1 DRM controversy blew up I'd be a gazillionaire already.

Yeah, shit might go all digital in a fuckin DECADE...but no sooner.... It's called high speed infrastructure...and newsflash, this country can't do DICK anymore when it comes to big, expensive projects. No private company is going to lay down the necessary cable to update this country's bandwidth where it needs to be because there's no profit in it. And Congress can't decide the sky is blue without a bunch of crazy ass Tea Baggers and wild eyed liberals getting into a dust-up. In order for shit to go all digital we need a MASSIVE public works expenditure the likes of which this country hasn't seen since we built the national highway system. AINT GONNA HAPPEN FOLKS.

Are you talking about people like Phil Fish? Because yeah, people like him are an embarrassment... sigh.

Skyward Sword's controls are absolute junk.

The latest Tomb Raider is not a very good game, the only thing it gets right for me is cover.

The battle system from The World Ends With You is more enjoyable personally when the top screen is set to auto, multi-tasking is not a strong suit of mine.

I like this 'offensive' 'degrading' fan-service in my video games.

CUM AT ME BRO.

Im halfway into God of War one on the HD collection and its no fun. Its only 7 years old but the design feels ancient. The combat is spammy crap, and the more elaborate moves dont work on most enemies. The exploration is painful, the puzzles make me groan as you have to push a box for miles to flip a switch. It introduces pointless mechanics everywhere like smashing through underwater barriers, that are only put there to justify the mechanic. It looks like ass on the ps3 too, clearly a game meant for a CRT.

People only playing shooters (or only one genre for that matter, but shooters in paticular) don't know what videogames are.

Either Sony or Microsoft should drop out of the console business. Preferably Microsoft. Both offers are way too similar so fanboys warz are hilarious. Shifting strategies to offer a third way to look at things instead of dropping out would be ok too.

People buying every Assassin's Creed and/or CoD every year at full price and then complaining that genuinely insteresting, original games are too expensive and "will wait for a price drop" are the bane of existence.

AC and CoD being considered hardcore is hilarious. They're casual as hell, more than games actually considered casual.

Quoted for the new page. Beautifully said and I agree 100%. I was actually hesitant in picking up Skyward Sword because of TP's stink. Imagine my surprise that Skyward Sword turned it around despite its flaws it really had that "feel" that was missing from TP. I am curious if you feel the same about SS or not.

Assassin's creeds difficulty is probably about on par with the kirby series from nintendo.

Maybe less honestly, there is probably more risk of failure in most kirby games.

I don't think there is a human with two hands who can't play through the AC series.

In one post:
"If you like x, you have bad taste" . . . "x is good a game, a great game even"

This thread is so stupid lol

Rockstar's writing is terrible.
Mass Effect 2 isn't any good.
Crysis is the best FPS ever made.
Spec Ops: The Line had better gameplay than Uncharted 2.
Motion controls and touch screen controls can be pretty good.
