I'm sure you have some larger, stronger employees. Have them hold him down and then shave that scraggly mess.

OP maybe you can provide an image of a guy with a beard that is similar to the employee in question's?

I mean are we talking this?

or this?

or this?

or is it full-blown:

in the office and line of work Im in, all of those would be unacceptable. a beard in a professional environment should be trimmed and tidy.

More like this:

If that's the case, then the employee should shave his disgusting beard immediately.

In order for Sunflower to appear as a fair yet firm boss, maybe he can pit the employee that is up for promotion against another low-performing employee (a jobber if you will) in some sort competition (a match if you will). Loser of said "match" then has to fully shave off his beard.

Now here's the trick, Sunflower should do all he can to aid said jobber in his match against the employee up for promotion, completely behind the scenes in order for him to still appear as a fair boss.

Good luck in your future endeavors Sunny!

My dad is successful in tech and business sector and always controlled the way I dressed to ensure I would eventually have financial success and he can go fuck himself. He's a controlling dick bag and if I want tattoos and piercings I'll get them.

Besides that you should be able to look presentable for work, at least. This guy is an ass.

He wants you to do well in life? What a dick.

If you need to consult gaf for management advice you should be worrying more about your own position than your employee's.

Putting Encino Man forward for a promotion in front of your board was strike one.

Then he's superstitious and has no business in the entertainment industry :P

Heh, I had to do that when I took this job many years back. Money's more attractive to me than self-expression.

I am concerned it may demotivate him, which is why I need to get him to want to change instead of viewing it as an order.

You are a manager in the entertainment industry? Im starting to doubt the whole swinger club in your apartment building story.

I used to have big beard, ran a design company and I don't think I lost any clients because of it?

I thought no one cared these days? You see lots of big time European business men with beards.

Yeah, fuck common sense and good intentions!

You know how his life went almost exactly as if you lived it yourselves. Fuck personal happiness.....oh wait that can be bought with money and a high ranking corporate position.

Don't want to live in a dumpster or a cardboard box, after all! That idea of happiness = stupidity and eating rat droppings in the tub in a Motel 6, right?

The people who were told they won't succeed unless they conform care. If they had to lose their personal freedoms to succeed then you can bet others will have to as well.

I worked as a salesperson at a large retail chain. I was always told to have no stubble no nothing clean shave. Well I read my contract and nothing was in there apart from a vague mention of presentable, so I started growing a beard, and no joke my sales went up. ButI was still told to shave etc :S. I have since left the company over idiotic management.

Sunny, what if this bearded man kept the beard, but began wearing suit and ties at all times and perhaps even pulled his hair back into a neat pony tail? Would you go through with the promotion at that point?

So either you're a hugely successful, soulless and miserable businessman who wears a suit 24/7, or you're a happy, creative soul who looks like Oscar the Grouch and lives in the sewers.

Thanks for sharing your mature and well reasoned world view!

Have you thought about just picking someone else? Maybe find someone in the company who has been there for a long time and has proven himself, but has become complacent. Then, outta nowhere, you offer him the job. People who know you want to promote the scroungy guy will probably think of him like a viper, just slithering in and taking his opportunity, but he will be the one walking out of the office with that new position.

I sacrificed shaving today, so I can sleep longer.

But no, I never had and employee nor I don't think I would eer be an employer...but, we will see.

I had a similar problem at my last job, I wasn't up for promotion or anything but was amazing at my job even better than my boss... One day I started to grow a bread and they say shave it now. I looked it up and it wasnt against the rules so I said fuck that shit( they were waaay more assholeish about it than Im letting on) if my work is above standards and Im getting paid shit.... Lol I mostly did it to piss them off, but its my fucking face if I want to grow a damn bread Im going to...... fucking companies they try to control their employees waaaaay to much.

Cherish such employees. Refer to them as "guys/girls who gets shit done" with your bosses. Problem solved.

Sometimes it's better to keep those employees at a certain level in the company and not promote them but instead just give them a modest raise. Then again, it can be hard to secure a raise if they aren't presentable enough as well.

There is no clean shaven policy but we do have"well-groomed" in there - but I'm not going to lose a very good employee completely because his definition isn't up to snuff. It's not worth the pain of losing the dude. He can just stay there and never get called up to the next level. But I'm definitely not going to lose his current production over this. Just the promotion is in question.

I don't know the industry you're in, but it's possible that the guy doesn't want to move into a more managerial role. I am on engineering, and it's common for career paths to diverge at some point for people here. You can remain in the technical side and rise to lofty, well paying positions, or you can choose to go to the managerial side if you prefer a bit more money and, in my humble opinion, a much less interesting job. Perhaps this person feels a similar way about moving into a position such as this?

FYI all this Daniel Bryan talk:

this is NOT a joke thread focused on his imminent failure at Summerslam. This is a completely separate thing, and I am not Vince McMahon.

I'd let him be, you've tried everything from making him look like an idiot at the biggest presentation of his career to throwing him in anger management and he's coming out smelling like a rose.

let him be who he wants to be. Sounds like a crap place to work if you only care about appearance, and tbh, your customers sound like asses if they care what someone looks like.

Tell him that he should just get rid of the beard because it is fad of the day and he will just regret he ever had it in 5 years anyway. I felt the man was always trying to get me to cut my mullet. The man was right.

I was in a similar situation my boss had dropped a few hints but I was content looking the way I did was part of my identity a huge wake up call for me was when are general manger said I would look good clean shaven.

Final nail in the coffin for me was my boss joined us for a drink after work one day and asked me about my future where I saw myself did I want a family? Be a home owner ? More responsibilities ?

I'm also amazed at the people who think their unkempt beards should be okay no matter what. Baby society.

It's called "becoming an adult". Your personal happiness doesn't depend on a scraggly beard. If you believe that, you have a whole lot of growing up to do.
