Kendrick Lamar's verse

I want NY to write against this and come out hungry - not on some beef, but on the spirit of competition.

That's how this would've been in the 90s, or even the early 2000s before ringtones and such.

Kendrick was so savage.

Exactly. There wouldn’t of been any doubt on what NY would of done and dudes would have been penning barz straight away. Problem is NYC and Hip Hop in general doesn’t have that mentality anymore or the quality of emcees which it used to have.

The standards have dropped hugely!!

It's a sad day when Joey is the representative for NY.

So true!!!

Kendrick is a beast. He just redeems every song he's on. 50 Cent's We Up, A$AP's Fucking Problems and 1Train, even YOLO :lol

Section.80 and good kid, M.A.A.D city are the rap albums I've listen to the most, ever. Awesome stuff.

There are plenty of dudes who have that mentality now but they get written off by the fanbase now because they don't write good songs or they're inconsistent. The newer generation of dudes that are popular focus on making music to make money and don't care about competition so long as they're eating and not directly insulted. Hell half of them don't even respond to direct insults.

Thinking about this stuff makes me feel like I'm too old even to post in GAF-Hop.

I'm just trying to imagine what the analog of this would've been in like, 1993 when I was a kid or something. Like if Nas came out after Live after the BBQ and just called out Biggie and the Wu and Tupac and Big L all at the same time.

None of those guys/groups would've allowed even a day to go by before they were on the radio responding to this track. Not even one day.

We only hype mainstream rappers? Now that's funny. Swing by occasionally and you'll get plenty of recommendations from Pitchfork-approved rap artists and Rhymesayers rejects.

Why does gafhop think these things deserve there own threads and why does gafhop only hype mainstream rap?

Thats crazy. I mean before if an MC was dissed, radio would be talking about, fans would be talking about it and the one who was dissed would have no option but to say something back.

Its crazy that now MC's dont even have to be subliminal and still there is no response.

Remember 4321. Canibus spit a beastly verse but wasn’t even dissing LL on that track 'Yo L that tat on your arm let me borrow that' however LL still thought it was enough to go back at Canibus. You can argue whether LL was right in actions (I think not) but that was and should be what Hip Hop is about. There should always be competition between rappers even if it’s just trying to spit the hottest verse on a collab.

I actually don't even like this as a song. But this is still better than trying to talk about that Hiero piece of shit. I can't wait to see what happens when the Deltron album finally comes out and every nerd on this board has to come to the realization that Del is done.

Ha you really thought this deserved a thread. You must not know truly good verses like Eminems renegade verse or Canibus' beast from the East verse. Actually I'm sure you know about renegade so why you posted this, I don't know and I don't know why Kendrick would call out J Cole. J Cole has done a lot of battling and was good at it. I used to be on a forum that j Cole also posted on when he was young. He had audio battles with other members and most of the time he bested them. I know on wax J Cole would demolish Kendrick.

Why are so many people are taking this song as a dis track? This is a bit like that Harrison Ford thread. This shit is going to elevate everyone's game.

Can you link me to the thread? I need some of these recommendations.

TBH, right now we're all talking about this verse at the moment. It'll calm down later today, with the whole thread eventually deciding the song was shit and then the recommendations from Idaho's biggest rapper and shit will be flowing like Jermaine's tears.

So...he's a beast because he SOMETIMES bested random forum posters?

Wow. Lupe was right. The bar IS low.

Yep.

Other than Kendrick hoeing out NYC rappers (and he's right, he gets more love out there than damn near every NY rapper nowadays), he wasn't directly dissing anyone. This is him telling other dudes to get on my level.

Besides, Jermaine ain't trying to go at kdot and fuck up that collab album.

In the case of LL and Canibus, it was a diss since L asked Bis to take the line out of the verse in the studio. Bis agreed but turned around and put it in anyways.

But as for this stuff.. I don't know if it's a result of the violence over beef in the past or what but these new dudes would rather focus on money than competition. I wouldn't say that's wrong necessarily but it does result in a lot of dudes just coasting once they have a fan base. I mean at least dudes like Jay and Nas put out really amazing records before they started coasting. Half these dudes had a couple hot tracks with mediocre albums and just straight chill on it. Or in extreme cases like Lil B and Soulja Boy have only ever put out trash but found a market and wear that shit like a snuggie on a cold night after a drinking binge.

It is what it is though. But for fans who like friendly competition, dudes that get called out on this and won't even bother to step up their material are a joke. For fans that enjoy actual battles between artists, this is a non-event.

I'm glad op created the thread since I haven't been checking twitter/fb that often as of late.

yes this is very good for rap since it will light a fire underneath the dormant 'faces' of hiphop and hopefully inspire some future rappers as well

drake, jcole and the likes have no choice but to respond. from here on, every interviewer will ask if they've heard the track
