Nvidia Shield Thread

What's the big deal about streaming PC games, anyways? Isn't it more or less just an extended mini screen?

I've always been into handheld gaming. I'm older than most on here but went absolutely bezerk when Mattels football came out in 1977. I got most of those: baseball, basketball, soccer. I also got a Microvision as a teen but they were totally unreliable, but the first I know of that had interchangeable games. And so on. I think you either get handheld gaming or you don't.

Well then. I just got my Shield in, and I can't get the streaming to work. It won't even recognize or pick up my PC. I'm kind of at a loss. I restarted my shield, and did that update that people were talking about. I have Steam Beta installed. I have GeForce experience installed (it shows that my PC is ready for streaming.

Fack.

Just got my Shield in, and I have a question for any other shield owner: Does your d-pad move around a bit? It seems like I can physically shift the d-pad around a few millimeters. It seems to actually register presses accurately, but it's stiff and yet slides around a bit. Either way, it seems like an awful d-pad, which isn't a huge deal to me, but if for some reason my unit is crappier than others I might want to get it replaced.

This is beyond frustrating. I don't understand why Geforce is telling me I'm 100% ready to stream, and yet it can't recognize my PC.

Sigh.

My Desktop is hard wired into my Ethernet wall socket which is obviously wired to the router (so it's connected via Ethernet). How is Shield supposed to detect and connect to my Desktop anyways?

My dpad shifts around also and I remember reading a review that said the same. I think it happens on all of them.

My wife would not be happy with a 40ft HDMI cable strung across the upstairs, and definitely not a 100ft one running to my downstairs.

I understand that it's not ideal for you, but you shouldn't just be completely dismissive and say "You can play games in bed so who cares about all the downsides" because for a lot of people, myself included, they're real concerns and comparisons.

You might have gone here already, but if not I'd recommend visiting the Geforce shield forums:https://forums.geforce.com/default/board/111/nvidia-shield/

I'm not trying to be dismissive, I'm just stating that, in my opinion, the benefits of this device outweigh the 30fps, and I don't agree with the "30fps no buy" nonsense.

I do understand your frustration over 60fps vs 30fps, but are you really saying that you are unwilling to play games under 60fps? Or just that you're frustrated with the limitation?

I'm getting amazing battery life. 4 hours screen on time with 50% battery left.

If you want to stream videos from your PC or Mac I definitely recommend Qloud. It works great.

Yeah, I don't understand why you would want to play on a less than optimal device, or even pay for one, when the main device is already the best solution (Not in terms of mobility, of course.). It's complicated and expensive, and all it does is allow you to play in a different room - a few meters away from the main device.

Streaming is becoming a pain. It seems to work really well for five minutes, then crashes, I get back into the game, it works less well than before, repeat. I know I don't have the latest and greatest router and that's probably it. Maybe I'll buy one next month, already upgraded my computer with a new power supply and graphics card. Drops a lot because of interference yet I live in a house and checked and no other wifi is on the same channel as mine. Handheld HL2, JC2, etc. is awesome.....when it works.

I don't own any of the devices but from the little time I've spent with the Wii U, you can hardly see any defects with the gamepad's stream. The Shield on the other hand seems to have visible artificats/macroblocking if you look for it. Plus there's latency.

I was honestly expecting the Shield to at least stream at the same framerate as what your PC is doing because stuff like onlive has been doing it fine AND over the internet

Thanks for the explanation.

If anyone is having problems - check and check again that you have the latest firmware. When I first received my SHIELD I checked for the latest firmware and it said I was fine. Then I mucked with it forever and it turned out I didn't...so who knows what's up. But focus on that as the first "fix" (beyond the obvious other things). It drove me nuts.

Also, I believe you need the latest beta of Steam, as well.

The device looks interesting but the reports of pc wifi streaming lag, no rumble in the controller, and a handicap on 30fps streaming has me hesitant from jumping in...

Well guys on nvidia board say 5 ghz dual band router is essential for good PC streaming. Can buy one online for 30 dollars, not as bad as I thought it was going to be.

Finally got some serious time sunk into my Shield, and I'm loving it. The streaming is outrageously good... No noticeable latency at all, which is mind-blowing to me. Of course I'd love it to be 60fps instead of 30, but 30 is still phenomenal, especially on a 5" screen.

And that's the other thing. I've been downsampling 1080p to the 720p screen, and GOOD LORD does it look amazing. There's something seriously incredible about seeing the highest-end PC visuals totally maxed out on a portable.

So, streaming is great. Tomorrow I'm going to get into all of the emulators and stuff to see how well it runs that stuff.

Are you using a dual band router? I finally took the plunge and bought one off of amazon for about twenty bucks, much less than I thought it would be. Its the only thing left I can do to get this PC streaming working well. Its like I'm on a quest at this point. If it doesn't work (guys on the NVidia board said it would) I'm out of options at this point.

You can downsample the screen? Oooh, real talk, 1080p/30fps could be easily acceptable for most games I'd play on something like that in the first place. I can do 30fps with a gamepad.

Someone say SHIELDS?

BRING FORTH DA SHIELDZ

Damn that was one of the best Jrpgs this generation. I don't know if I'd tie this game with Demon's Souls as best Jrpg this gen. The game was just so damn perfect.

I'm going to return mine. I actually think the physical build is fantastic. While a lot of people said it was ugly, it's easily (IMO) the best handheld device I've ever played. I wish this was an actual platform (that isn't mobile/android based). Something like Vita games on this would be incredible. Screen is gorgeous, controls feel just right. It's basically a console experience on the go.

However, I pretty much picked this up solely for the streaming capabilities (I know it's in Beta, and that's not the main purpose of the device. So shame on me for getting this JUST for that). Problem is, I get way too much interference around my house, regardless of my router being one of the recommended and 5 ghz. Frame rate drops way too low, and I get disconnected too often. I feel like this device is way too specific and dependent on you having the perfect connection/environment to work the way it should.

I have to say despite returning it, there is a lot of things I love about it. And I think if you are heavily into the android gaming market, it's really great for that.

Can this technically be fixed with software update?
This is a massive omission, I can't believe no one else mentioned this...

no one else mentioned it because the human eye can't tell the difference of anything higher than 30FPS anyways so it's pointless*

* - what nvidia marketing probably thought

I hope nvidia is working on an update to fix the lockup and audio streaming, Only problems I have with it so far.

any update for PPSSPP and Drastic yet?

any update for PPSSPP and Drastic yet?

Drastic was updated:
Version 2.1.2a:
- Fix for microphone bug in Zelda games
- Fix for Megaman Battle Network 5 Double Team DS
- Disabling sound shouldn't cause problems anymore
- Some changes in Google Drive handling
- Quick-saves don't override Auto-saves anymore
- Fixed cheat menu crashing if a cheat string contains invalid characters

Nothing from PPSSPP, but an update is coming. You can also try some beta versions on their website instead of waiting for the android update.

Is it better than Plex?

Qloud is much easier to setup for cellular data streaming than Plex for me. I just installed the client on my mac and that was it. I tried Plex a year or so ago and could only get local streaming to work.

Crazy Taxi works great on the Shield now. My favorite game along with Bard's Tale.

PC streaming has become a total pain. Bought a used dual band router that turned out defective. Tech support guy said that just turning on the router would allow all my wifi enabled devices to see it. Is this true? Wasn't plugged into the modem at all when tried. Reset it a few times but never gave a signal. This has been headache inducing and frustrating seeing how well streaming to the wiiu to game pad and vita from ps4 look.

The 30 FPS streaming killed this for me. If it's good for just emulation with the device itself there may still be interest, but my main interest was in hope of one day being able to play FFXIV or PSO2 streamed from my PC, or even Dolphin emulator streamed.

I thought it may be a problem, but now having got it, I can say it really isn't an issue, it looks fantastic and being that you're playing on a 5" screen really helps and it looks/plays very smoothly! And this is from someone who uses a Titan and values high frame rates.

Nvidia not selling Shield on Amazon.com is a huge mistake. (many people only buy from Amazon theses days)

Asphalt 8 is shield compatible, for those that care :)

good, I was looking into it since I saw the OT and I was worry because of the Gameloft dude comment, this should be nice with sticks and triggers.

So it's almost one month with the system, here is my 1 month mini review with the system.

Between native android games, emulators (PS1,PSP,NDS,N64) and streaming PC games Shield is my most played system in august and I barely touched my PSvita and 3DS, I'm really surprised here, I really thought that I'll leave this to dust after one week but there are just too many thing to play on it. I'm finally able to play android games thanks to the full controller and dual triggers and sticks (there are many shallow android games but the full controls at least make them playable) I almost re-discovered Google Play since before Nvidia Shields I really didn't care about android games and it's funny how huge the library, I got many games, Asphalt, Dead Trigger, VC, RB, Riptide GP 2, I just wish there are more Tegra/Shield optimized games.

This device is really emulator heaven, no other handheld system was even this close to what this do and offer on that side and thanks to the full console controller almost everything work here, I'm enjoying some of my PSone games and PSP games again on it, and it's amazing how much better the PPSSPP on it (Sony need to improve Vita PSP emulator as this beat it). Streaming PC games were really better than expected and only Metro: Last Light was completely unplayable for because of the huge drop on framerate for some weird reasons, but other than that I got tons of fun with my comfy "bed" PC gaming especially with Rogue Legacy and Skyrim.

Also after a month now it's easier for me to hold the system for hours, 600g is still too much for a handheld but I guess I've got a bit stronger arms now (lol), and yeah I still don't really hear the fan at even if I put the device on mute.

what's up with the price on this thing? There are plenty of them selling on ebay and amazon for close to $400!! Isn't the MSRP $299?

Yeah it is $299 but because Nvidia don't sell it in many online stores, only ones they got deals with like Newegg (even Amazon don't sell it directly to customers and only via third party sellers) so people are taking full advantage of this.

Terrible. Better come down soon cuz I want to get one in the next 30 days or so.

yeah not selling it on Amazon and other places is just stupid, Nvidia is just really stupid which is sad because the device is pretty damn good (I guess is like 3D Vision situation again)

Is there any way of turning the PC off from inside Steam?

Usually on big picture mode you can, but from the Shield all you can select is "stop streaming." I was hoping to turn off my PC from the Shield last night.

Yeah, I didn't thought I'll like the device but now it's my favorite handheld, and there are just so many thing I can play with it.

hopefully Nvidia keep it alive, Shield 2 with Logan GPU (maybe also having its own native games) will be amazing.

New software update adds app to sd support. Right now it only moves the apk over but some apps can write content to the sd card.

Bard's Tale is one of them. It let me install 3.5GB of game data to the SD. Awesome!

Pocketcasts can also use the physical SD to store its podcasts, saving me even more space.

finally.

hopefully the update fix the freezing as well.

Just updated (Update 59) and the UI now is slow and sluggish. am I the only one have this problem? there are some new audio problems too as well.

what the hell Nvidia is doing?

Yes. I've only noticed it under direct sunlight or a really bright bulb..
Ok, that's pretty weird. I thought it was just the plastic that initially covers the screen.

Anyone have dpad issues? Mine accidentally registers diagonals a lot of times making it almost unusable. There's clicking sounds too, but that doesn't bother me as much as the sensitive diagonals

By the way while trying out shield's cloud streaming at pax, I asked one of the reps if we can expect any update in the future for a higher stream framerate. He unfortunately said that they had no plans at the moment and that he said 60 fps wasn't important right now for streaming. Most likely his opinion but c'mon man, not important??

GUYS

I just realized 144 (GB and GBC vertical resolution) x 5 = 720. The Nvidia Shield has a 720p screen, meaning it can perfect pixel play Game Boy games. No other device does perfect full screen pixels of GB and GBC. Holy venus fly trap. I'm so darn interested in buying this now.

May anyone show a screen of maybe Pokemon or a Game Boy or Game Boy Color game on the screen? I'd greatly appreciate it.
