VITA NEW MODEL Announced with built in 1GB memory!!

Don't mind the LCD if it's a good quality LCD. But I was hoping for a spec bump and transition to regular SD cards. Still no Vita for me.

The price cut was made with this model in mind. The OG vita was barely breaking even at $250.

The Vita was basically at break even for launch, according to Sony's own comments from it's unveiling. You really think in all that time since launch they haven't reduced production costs at all? The $50 drop a little over a year after it's Japanese launch is about in line with what most consoles and handhelds see.

Do you think they've been losing more than $50 per unit in Japan for the last six months too while we're at it? Or how about the VitaTV they're selling at $100 which has all of the same silicon + 720p/1080i upscaler + ethernet + USB (added in this new revision as well)? Do you think that they're >$100 on the control housing and screen on current Vitas?

They aren't going to lower the price now when they just dropped the price for U.S. and E.U. and it's a well known market trend that new colors result in new sales. They'll ride out that new color bump into the holidays where the recent price cut in the U.S. and E.U. will give them some extra momentum as well. I wouldn't expect price implications from the new models to be seen on the consumer side of things until E3 2014 at the soonest. Then any time at E3, Gamescom, or TGS I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a $150 Vita price drop.

You should also hold out for when they bundle a free PS4 with the Vita while you're at it, if unrealistic expectations are your thing.

A spec bump makes no sense, it's front end handheld hardware that hasn't even been fully tapped by developers yet. A key selling point to both gamers and developers with it is fixed hardware.

SD cards won't happen because Sony obviously views proprietary memory cards as 1. part of their profit model and 2. a way to protect the system from piracy.

I've lived 2 years with a phone with an OLED screen, LCD is more than good enough. I don't get the hype over it, especially if Sony puts in a good quality LCD which they likely will.

The LCD screen that they're putting in better be good.

Maybe the Vita screen was impressive when it came out, but I've been playing it lately and it's nothing special compared with modern phones.

It's better and it's worse in many ways. The panel in the Vita isn't a high end OLED display. It gets the bonus's inherent to OLED don't get me wrong, but it's not the best the tech has to offer by any means.

Don't forget that most high end phones are around $800 unlocked. So there are caveats lol. Sony had to target something for a moderate price point.

Plasma tech has indeed come a long way. But I warn you now, if you look at a modern plasma then try to go back to an LCD, it's pretty rough. The motion blur of an LCD paired with all these shaky cam movies makes the screen literally un-watchable to me. It's a blurry awful mess. Plus unless your willing to spend $1500+ on an LCD, your black levels are probably actually grey levels. Movies and games like Pirates of the Caribbean or Batman are comically worse. Once you get used to the advantages of better screen tech, it's really quite jarring to go back.

I had to finish watching Breaking Bad on my Vita because of how many dark scenes there were lol.
I understand. I thought maybe you ment that LCD was rubbish for gaming in general, but i see that you mean more in comparison to other screen technologies. I'm happy with my 3-4 year old LCD TV, but i havnt checked out the newer TVs for comparsion (maybe for the best hehe :)).

That's because phone screens are better. Subsidies on phones are maaaaaaassive. If you had to pay actual full price for your Note 2 or whatever its like 600 bucks. Sony had to be more price conscious with the Vita - it's an OLED screen, but its not going to stack up to the OLEDs you see in the latest samsung/whatever phones. Still better than LCD, though.

I see that they actually fixed the uneven screws slots thing.

Red/Pink and Black better make it out here.

The Yellow/White is also tempting but I'd have to hear accounts from white Vita users on how theirs look after a year. My white DS lite was a nasty looking thing.

I've had my white Vita since Oct last year.

The unit is pure white, as if it were new. No yellowing or fading. No dirt or grime stains.

The white on front is under/beneath the clear coating. The white back is glossy, loathing has discolored or stained it.

Nintendo stuff that often discolors (white analog sticks, DS lite) is matte, absorbing materials from your hands - into the porous surface.

I do keep my hands clean and wash them before playing portables, maybe that has an effect?

Not too sure about the decision to only include 1 GB. I mean how much more would 4 or 8 GB set them back. Geez, come on Sony.

Sony needs to sell memory cards it what causes them to make up what they lose on the hardware.

Razor companies do the same thing they sell the original razor and handle for a loss and then make it up by overcharging for blade replacements.

If you didn't have to have a memory card at some point then they would never be able to make up the loss on "essential" accessories

Exactly how much of a problem is that on the OG Vita?

Is it really a noticeable thing?

Not in decent lighting conditions, no. You'll notice it if the Vita's screen is the brightest object in the room by a very large margin, and only when the screen goes black for a loading screen or something similar.

Hopefully, they'll continue to sell the older (better) model along side this new one. Looks like the 64GB card will be around 100 US Dollars.

Almost zero chance of that. The move to an LCD screen is likely being done to reduce bill of materials per unit. Offering both would only cost them more money (dual lines, dual packaging, potential for slow sales of one but not the other, etc.).

This is the end of the OLED handheld. If you want OLED get it now. The price drop from Gamescom and the new bundles will likely be pushed this holiday season with further sales and promos to clear out stock before the LCD versions come to the U.S. and E.U..

Too many LCD haters here. Has anybody seen an LCD screen on an HTC One? That screen destroys the Vita OLED. If Sony puts a nice LCD in there, I don't think it will affect quality at all. Plus LCD won't have the long term issues OLED will have.

Highly unlikely imo especially since there isn't any substantial difference between the 2 to warrant being separate.

This will more likely be the Vita of choice going forward (until they do a third revision :p) and the older one will be there until the rest of that stock dries up.

Time to buy more 1st gen Vitas!

If your talking pixel density sure, if your talking colors and black levels, no. OLED has massive advantages over LCD for gaming purposes.

If history is any proof...soon enough everything will be the new slimmer Vita and just like all older systems they are quickly forgotten.

Does anybody still like the original tank PSP? It looks ancient today while the cheaper and lighter 3000 is all anybody has cared about for years.

New colors, lightrer form factor, new lower price...combined with Vita TV and hopefully the platform actually gets a future.

Hmmm. I think the front of the new Vita is matte plastic. I'm wary about it.

Maybe I'll just get a black one and put a decal on the back again.

I still like the original PSP in terms of form factor, even though the screen was ass and all the moving parts broke in a matter of months. I'm kind of glad the OLED Vita stuck to a similar design.

It's probably a good thing that they're doing this though, for similar reasons. Soon everyone will forget the old model and jump on board if the games stop flowing and it'll be great, but I would definitely miss the build quality.

I still can't get over the 1GB internal memory. Why not just keep throwing in a 4GB card like they had been doing on all the other hardware bundles?
