MS buys the Xbone.com domain name

The name is meant to be disrespectful, a constant reminder to MS and anyone else that tries to pull the shit they tried to pull. I'm glad they aren't happy with the name.

Honestly surprised someone on GAF didn't already buy that domain considering how it's been so overused as of late.

I don't see an issue when it's used as a shorthand, but I guess I can understand when it's used as an insult. I'm not going to type out Xbox One every time I referencing the console.

You know, if they'd just had a bit of a sense of humor and embraced the name, people would laugh with them instead of calling them out and making fun of them. Microsoft's PR is just... I don't even know. I guess, tactless may be the word?

I don't see why anyone should need to be "respectful" when talking about a company's product.

It's the Xbone. #Dealwithit.

A year from now, maybe two, it will just be called the Xbox by everyone.

Just as soon as it goes past being the 'new Xbox', which is what 99% of people call it now anyway, just not here.

Wow some of these comments. Do you really think MS was trying to ruin your hobby?

If you directly compare their old and I stress old policies to Steam do you not see the improvements they were trying to make compared to that service?

Yes there were 24 hour check-ins but that was only required so that you could have more rights with your digital content (gifting, game share, resaling digital games, disc free playback, etc...)

I just don't get the vitrol I'm seeing lately. They reversed everything months ago.

This post takes me back to the good old days of early 2013. A Junior Member comparing the xbone to steam, and making excuses for the restrictive DRM. Ah memories.

I thought it was pretty disrespectful to me when Microsoft called it the XBox One!

I keep having conversations like :

"Hey do you remember Steel Battalion? It was a mech game on xbox 1"
"Mech game? Don't you mean Titan Fall?"
"Wait, no that's xbox one, I meant xbox"
"Chrome Hounds?"
"No that's 360, I meant xbox... uh, original gangster"

Microsoft could have continued their theme of not using numbers to avoid looking like they were behind Sony, called it Xbox Infinity and used the Windows 8 logo on it's side for brand cohesion, and everything would have been fine. But no, they had to name it after that Jet Li film, so now it's the xbone.

I like the nickname and I never thought it was disrespectful... maybe because my primary language is Portuguese (Xbox One is weird BTW).

They brought this on themselves, you know.
The initial unveiling bore the moniker, but it was the MS E3 conference that solidified it in my mind.

Go rewatch the E3 Press conference. Every speaker who was on the Xbox One topic had "XBOX ONE" splashed behind them. And EVERY TIME, the speaker would position themselves on the stage, and stand behind either the "OX" or the "XO", leaving only X B O N E on stage.

I could never unsee XBONE every time.

I've got a picture, but it's on my computer at home.
I'll try and get a screenshot in.

EDIT: Here we go, thanks Phil:

I think they bought it so they can squat on it and nobody else can use it to poke fun at the console with an official home to do it.

Either that or some marketing guy wants to take advantage of it's popularity.

I hope it's the first one though.

I didn't know people were offended by what I and many others call the Xbox One. It's an inanimate object, it has no feelings, why do you care about whether I call it Xbone or not? If anything, the fact it bothers you so much it'll make me continue to want to use the nickname.

People can and will be offended about anything.

I don't care whether it's disrespectful.

Disrespectful is trying to sneak in extreme DRM and steal our ability to buy and sell games second hand. Disrespectful is telling us that if we happen to live or work outside the regions where MS deigns to activate games we should just buy a 360. Disrespectful is expecting everyone to forget these things ever happened when public opinion finally forces you to back down. Disrespectful is having PR goons come to feed us utter garbage about system specs and then have a huff when people call them on it.

If anything, the name isn't disrespectful enough.
When and where did this PR stuff happen?

Also great post, it's nice to see the higher ups explicitly acknowledge this sort of bullshit rather than be willfully ignorant for the sake of being "unbiased".

"disrespectful" give me a fucking break. If they only knew how ridiculous this shit sounds. Just because you demand that your employees on your "campus" treat your corporate brand with a deference more suited to an ancient tribe's attitude to its vengeful god-father doesn't mean that you can expect your CUSTOMERS to as well.

That's probably the biggest issue I have with them now.
Gamers aren't as naive as 10 years ago.
MS appears to be letting Marketing people take over. I say cut that Marketing budget next round and focus more on building the best technology. Superior tech speaks for itself, as evidenced by Sony's latest creation.

Marketing should be a positive for us, not a negative. Marketing is the practice of identifying consumer needs, making a product that satisfies those needs, and then making sure the consumer is informed about your product.

Microsoft's problem was not that they had too much marketing, Microsoft's problem was that they didn't have enough. Their original vision for XB1 was something that very few people wanted.

why is this even an issue?!?

If I (a gamer) want to call a particular console an XBONE.. I shall. If I want to call said console a piece of shit put together by monkeys.. I shall.

Hell, I bet people that deal with me or my work/office have called us worse on any given day.. who gives a shit!?!?

Yes, another reason I never say "Xbox One" is because people assume you're talking about the original Xbox.

It is a seriously stupid name. Hence "Xbone", because I have to call it something. "Xbox" is too vague.

That said, I am leaning toward buying one, because for some reason I am sinking a ton of money into Madden Ultimate Team this year, and that shit won't transfer over to my PS4.

We have a product for people with zero internet access, it's called the 360 - Sorry for the shitty annotations, first video that popped up.

Only 5 countries will have voice commands at launch - along with other various restricted countries and dropped launch areas

and so on and so forth. it's not hard to find.

Xbone can roll off the tongue as either affectionate or mocking, or both, like any good name for something. For me, it's simply what's it called now. Any further connotation is applied by the speaker.

Calling it disrespectful is silly considering it's the most obvious nickname in the first place.

Xbone is fine, and it's not disrespectful since it's a mash up of the actual name.

It's not like they are calling it XPOS

Since the most important thing to me about being the gamer is the games themselves, I usually do not care one way or the other about "gaming celebrities." In fact I actually find the whole concept of their existence to be rather silly.

With that said, something just absolutely rubs me the wrong way when it comes to Major Nelson. He is the absolute epitome of a corporate shill in every and all regards. He somehow always manages to make my opinion of the XBox brand less favorable.

Nah shitting on your consumers, lying, trying to take away our selling rights, shoving Kinect down our throats, money hatting exclusives, forcing online DRM and not giving value to your non-US Gold subscribers is disrespectful.

The Xbone name is here to stay Larry.

180 is my usual go to. I'm not trying to type all of those letters. Hell, I don't even put a space in WiiU. Also I can't ever imagine a scenario where I would say XBone out loud. Like, whaaat?

One day, when people say the name Munson Xbone, they're gonna think "winner." Just like DiMaggio is to baseball or, or Unitas is to football, that's what Munson Xbone will be to bowling.

why u let them tho

Because as much as I disagree with what they say, it's good to let them have their say (especially when they're clearly marked as what they are) and NeoGAF gives them a good platform to defend their points or fail to do so miserably. Hey, at least they're trying. Maybe we should see if Reggie wants an account too... (I don't know that Sony has anyone in that same sort of open PR role - possibly because they seem to be so utterly incompetent at it. ;))

That they are biased. That isn't true 100% of the time with "Xbone" but it almost always is with "M$". When somebody uses "M$", you can completely disregard whatever they had to say.

If you honestly feel "disrespected" over a consumer product, you need to adjust your priorities. Microsoft didn't come to your house and slap you in the face, they are trying to offer a product that they feel you will buy and would benefit their bottom line the most. There was enough uproar to make them change their minds, that's it. The resulting marketing/PR is par for the course for any company.

Microsoft brought 'disrespect' into it. It's not a phrase I'd normally use for any of the things being discussed, but it's a hell of a lot more appropriate for their attitude towards gamers than it is for the use of 'XBone'. And this isn't an anti-Microsoft thing either - Sony and Nintendo have been every bit as bad in the past. But right now, MS are the ones screwing themselves by trying to screw us.

It was obvious to anyone with half a brain cell what the reaction to the XBox One as originally specified would be. Microsoft could have saved themselves time, effort, and bad publicity if they'd just thought for a second...

So now Microsoft recognized the Xbone name officially and I can keep calling it Xbone.

Disrespectful? Maybe think about a better name next time. XBONE XBONE XBONE!!!

If you want some respect then start dropping the title "Major" first you hypocritical prick, then you have my and everybody who have ascended to the "Major" rank's respect. No? Then stop whining.

Arrogant prick.
