Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

As for mine:

1. Here's a big one, brace for it: games have become too needlessly violent and do desensitize people to violence by trivializing it. Worse, violence is a cheap selling trick that usually replaces the need for quality.
2. FPSs are one of the most boring genres ever and the world would be a better place if they had never been invented (and I used to play the hell out of Doom and Duke Nukem 3D).
3. Skyward Sword had awesome motion controls; in fact they were the best part of what is otherwise a very lackluster and barebones game.
4. Some companies do have better ethos than others. Even though the goal of any company is making money, some will do it by building long-term trust and goodwill with their customers, and others will do it by trying to scam them at each opportunity. And this includes console makers.
5. That said, absolutely no company is worthy of your devotion. Not Square (dear god, not them indeed), not Sony, not Nintendo, not Blizzard, not Capcom, not even Platinum Games. Don't give anyone a free pass just because they made your favorite game.
6. Resident Evil games are better than Silent Hill games.
7. It is perfectly legitimate to dislike a game based on looks, be it loli/moe aesthetic, pixel art, gray/brown "realism", or what have you.
8. Xenoblade Chronicles is the best JRPG of all time.

Flame on!

Demon's Souls is one of the best games ever.

6. Dark Souls is a top 5 RPG. Possibly along with Baldur's Gate 2, Morrowind and so forth. That's how good it is.

Not controversial, least of all here.

Games should not be "fun"

Um, could you elaborate? I admit this is not just controversial but counterintuitive at least.
Edit: I understand now your meaning, but I think that people are using a very narrow definition of "fun". I'm having fun when I play Walking Dead, even as I go through heart-wrenching decisions, because they make me feel strongly. People have fun watching horror movies and dramas, fun doesn't mean "laughing".

Thank you, if games ever want grow up we have to get past this notion that the only emotion we should be deriving from something interactive is "fun." We have fun movies, and we have movies like Schindler's List which are painful to watch at times and not very fun at all. Games are constantly being held back by trying to explore new avenues of storytelling, while also trying to adhere to this old school philosophy that a game has to be fun as well, the two are most of the time not compatible and conflict.

It's not as if when I'm playing the Walking Dead and I axe some dude's leg off I'm going "oh gee this is so much fun." We need more games that are painful to play or make us feel uncomfortable for reasons other than "aww the controls are fucking awful."

it's called a game for a reason! jesus.

I don't like open world games (except for MMOs). I feel overwhelmed, and I don't find it enjoyable. I spend most of my time traveling from one thing to the next, and gameplay typically is weak since most of the emphasis is on the world/traveling. I couldn't care less about GTA V, and I am currently playing Red Dead Redemption and think its 'okay'.

Schindler's List is fun, though. I love and take pleasure from watching heart-wrenching tragic movies. If it helps, replace the term "fun" (because it has childish connotations for many) with "pleasurable". Games should always be pleasurable. Silent Hill 2 is pleasurable.

You're just getting into semantics at this point. I'd personally use the word engaging. I believe all pieces of art should strive to be engaging, and whether that's by being super fun or incredibly gut wrenching. Games shouldn't have to adhere into being "fun" as their only means to engage the player.

If the argument comes up a lot then take a moment to consider that it may have some merit. Every Pokefan that I know has been into the series since they were children, and people are often happy to overlook their critical faculties to enjoy something they enjoyed as children. I very much doubt that there are many new 20+ year old fans - its something that comes from childhood.

Tbh, it's much like the fandoms for Mario/Zelda - if I'm playing one of those games today, it's not for their cutting edge mechanics an innovations. It's because I enjoyed them as a kid and want to re-live the feeling.

Or, let me cut myself deep - I love batman. But as an adult, it was hard to come to terms with the fact that my fondness for TAS is not from its objective quality - its aged really quite poorly. My love for Batman was created as a ten year old and I have nurtured it irrationally ever since.

I still stand behind my feelings about Pokemon fandom though, they are by far the most annoying fandom that I come across online - unwavering uncritical reception of Pokeproducts combined with a grating and unfunny collective sense of humour. I am ambivalent towards the games, but I actively dislike the fans.
I play games like Mario, Sonic, Pokemon etc because I find them fun games and I enjoy their mechanics. There are also plenty of games I've missed out on my childhood but ended up enjoying them as an adult (Mega Man, Metroid, Earthbound, etc).

So no, nostalgia isn't enough for me to enjoy the games. Nostalgia only merely enhances the experience, not make them.

Joking in tone, mostly serious in content.

Raise your flame shields fellas! Shitting on stuff you don't like is meant to be gleefully fun. Otherwise I'm just annoying myself for no reason.

And that would be stupid.

Like Pokemon :D

Oh and from the OP of this thread:

State your "controversial" gaming opinion here, members of GAF: opinion that you personally held close at heart but at odds against the majority of video game enthusiasts here in GAF or at large.

However, please be careful not to venture into trolling territory please :) And remember, do not herald your own personal opinion as the absolute truth that others must abide to or else. ?

So knock it off. This isn't the thread to act like a dick.

The humor in GTA is and was always juvenile trash. Lots of Innuendo and Republicans jokes. The games themselves are great but the humor just doesn't work for me, mostly.

I think uncharted and to a lesser extend The last of Us are over rated games

i'll add i've played about 30 min off uncharted and couldn't get into it, and a few hours of uncharted golden abyss on my Vita and just found combat clunky
The last of us is very smilar combat wise and it detracts from the story when a gameplay element is irritating or boring, but its saving grace is its amazing story

it's called a game for a reason! jesus.

What something is called is completely irrelevant to it's quality. I mean if we changed nothing about games but instead decided to call them some pseudo bullshit like "Interactive Experiences" would you then have no problem with them not having to be fun?

Just say you don't like that style of "weighty" gameplay with every move being deliberate. It's not bad, it's just not fun for those who hate slow, cautious gameplay.

I liked the weighty gameplay of Killzone 2 perfectly fine, seems overly unresponsive to me. This probably contributes to the difficulty but its really not for me

FF6>FF8>FF4>FF9> other FF's>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>FF7> Mystical Quest

GTA is overrated.

COD's popularity does not make sense to me

Skyward Sword is a great game

Chrono Cross is a great sequel

Resident Evil : Code Veronica and Resident Evil 2 are vastly superior to RE4

Ape Escape is better than Mario 64.

Mario Sunshine sux

Super Mario Bros. 3 is better than Mario World

I wish fighting games had more interesting (and cohesive) story and they stop to use a lot of text to tell it.

-Bioshock Infinite didn't deserve the praise it got and is one of the most forgettable AAA titles I've played.
-MOBA games aren't refined enough to be taken seriously competitively and their popularity is in large part due to them being easy to play and them being more about teamwork than individual skill.
-GTA series as a whole is grossly overrated.
-SSBB had terrible design and I don't know why people defend it.

The way combat works in the Souls games is that attack animations can't be interrupted. Instead, button presses during an attack will buffer the next action.

It's not unresponsive, you just need to be careful because every button press will make an unskippable animation.

Are you my long lost brother?

Assassin's Creed 3 is a great game, it's a shame how much hate this game gets. I don't think it's better than AC2, but it's also not trying to be just another AC2 which I feel is something that isn't rewarded enough in this industry. Also Connor is a much better character than Ezio, but because he's not some idolized fantasy and feels like a real person people hate him. Gaming criticism just leaves me shaking my head a lot when it comes to evaluating video game protagonists.

MOBAs easy, wat?

I find them and their mechanics impenetrable.

Also, the teams I was on certainly didn't think they could carry my skill. :*(

::::)

I think you're getting worked up over nothing and you know it, but you're reluctant to concede that it's nothing. That's why you're now shifting to the "I was trolling all along" stance.

Am I getting warmer?

I'm arguing with strangers on the Internet about Pokemon, this is the definition of "nothing" :)

I really wasn't trolling though, I have genuine antipathy towards Pokemon fandom. My tone has been purposefully hyperbolic though, as befits the thread (or so I thought). I will not personally attack individuals, and if someone thinks I genuinely harbour I'll feeling towards them for their terrible taste then more fool them. I'm just fucking around and having a silly conversation with you lot.

No, the argument comes up a lot because people are too ignorant and love dismissing others for enjoying what they enjoy.

I play games like Mario, Sonic, Pokemon etc because I find them fun games and I enjoy their mechanics. There are also plenty of games I've missed out on my childhood but ended up enjoying them as an adult (Mega Man, Earthbound, etc).

Oh and from the OP of this thread:

So knock it off.

Listen, I really am not trying to offend you, qq more, personally. But, I do find Pokemon and its attendant fandom reprehensible and I honestly think that a large part of its appeal is based in nostalgia.

I also played Earthbound recently and enjoyed it on its own merits. BUT I also replayed Link's awakening recently and understood that a large part of its appeal to me is based on nostalgia. Same as the classic Mario games, playing a new one takes me back to being 10 again and pulling my first all-nighter playing smb3.

If anyone can tell me that they became a pokemon fan after 2004 I will be SHOCKED.

Anyway, I rilly don't wanna get banned so I will scale back posting here, having defended my opinion enough to prove (I hope) that it's not a simple drive-by troll and that I've been eager to engage in conversation regarding my opinions.

Peace :)

My friend told me he didn't like AC3 because Connor wasn't funny enough. This baffles me, gamers need to grow up in their tastes and embrace someone other than Nathan Drake for a change.

-MGS4 is not a good game nor does it have a good story...in fact, everything past MGS1 has been a convoluted mess and Kojima must surround himself with 'yes' men.

-Ive played Halo 1-3...I dunno what the fuss was ever about. In fact, "The Library" might be one of the worst designed levels Ive ever played in any game, although I don't think that last part is controversial at all.

-Uncharted 3 was terrible. Whoever decided that the button to shove someone in melee combat should be the same button to roll should be shot. I dunno how many times I died trying to escape marauding enemies only to be stuck in melee combat shoving the closest one only to be shotgunned by another guy. Also the story sucked and playing as young Drake was BORING.

-Starhawk was awesome. One of the biggest overlooked gems of this gen.

This topic is for UNPOPULAR gaming opinions so I recognize that there is a majority of people out there that don't agree with me and I accept that.

Ok here's an opinion of mine that might be considered controversial:

I had more fun with Catherine and its storyline/puzzles than I did with 90% of the shooters and violent action games. In fact it wouldn't be too far fetched for me to say that Catherine was one of the best games I played this gen

There are no alternatives on PC to Forza or Gran Turismo and that's a crying shame. Sure there's Project Cars coming - but that really isn't the same thing at all (I've been playing Project Cars since the public test releases began).

If there was a Forza or Gran Turismo type game as good as the console ones but for PC I'd probably think it was time to give up the consoles.

I would definitely give the nod to PC gaming as far as true racing simulation goes, but I think that the console 'sims' are accessible and packaged rather cleanly.

I have some opinions but I'll limit this to Pokemon since it's the flavor of the month:

- IVs or any random shit that affects stat growth should be eliminated or left at the player's control, and has no place in modern RPG design. EVs are fine because you can control that.

- Having event Pokemon is trash. Especially if they are not distributed globally and you have to go to a store. In the same vein, rare or limited edition stuff that only a few can get is a disgusting practice.

- This new generation has many lame Pokemon that do not evolve further (Carbink, klefki, furfrou, the fairies, etc). Even if they are based on interesting concepts, this shortcoming makes them shit.

- Character design has become disastrous since gen V. I'm not talking about the Pokemon, but the humans. Those main characters and gym leaders are horrendous.

My friend told me he didn't like AC3 because Connor wasn't funny enough. This baffles me, gamers need to grow up in their tastes and embrace someone other than Nathan Drake for a change.

If they're not the "Mr Perfect Idolized Cool Guy action hero" than they must be the "Stoic and badass Anti Hero" otherwise they are somehow a bad character. I don't know why this kind of evaluation seems to only exist in games.

I'd love to see the responses if Don Draper was a video game character "like omg why is this guy so unlikeable. He cheats on his wife all the time, struggles to never do it again, and then goes and cheats on her again. Geez what a dick."

And Pokemon fans shit up every funny pics thread with their painfully unfunny bullshit comics.

Fuck Pokemon and fuck pokemon fans. If you can name any post 150 Pokemon then you need to take a long hard look at your life. Only something as fucked up and bullshit as Pokemon could unleash a horror like Pamperchu onto this world. Even sonic fans aren't as freaky, and they have characters turning into toilets.

Wow, that was inspiring!

and true

What something is called is completely irrelevant to it's quality. I mean if we changed nothing about games but instead decided to call them some pseudo bullshit like "Interactive Experiences" would you then have no problem with them not having to be fun?

schindler's list is fun because you enjoy it. that's what fun means. i honestly do not understand what your point is.

Terrible analogies aside, you're confusing shitting on stuff with shitting on people. This is the very second sentence of the OP:

GAF is not that kind of forum.

I've been trying super hard to be respectful to individual posters and have been enjoying our debates. BUT, when my problem with the game is probably more to do with the fandom then I kind of need to shit on it, because that's the point. I hope it's been clear that its a mostly non-serious 'anger' (as in, I wouldn't punch anyone for liking Pokemon), but I am respectful of individual posters.

I wanted to give my controversial gaming opinion and that is my controversial gaming opinion.

Anyway, I've totally drained my balls of all my hate-spunk now, I'm out. Next time i post I'll make sure it's a one line drive by about dudebro shooters being totally lame or something ;)

I enjoyed playing FF13... Story was crap but the gameplay was so fun to me haha.

I think FF7 is incredibly average and not the best game ever in the series. I would easily rank FF6, 4, 8 and 10 above it (and many other RPG's).

I liked AC3 quite a bit. I agree that Connor wasn't as good of a character as Ezio but I thought overall his journey was interesting. I also felt that the new setting and environments were a great change. They made the series feel fresh again to me after the last 3 games being set in basically the same place.

GTA is fun but the missions are horrible and more restrictive than AC (which I find funny because AC3 is generally criticized for this yet from what a lot of people are saying GTA 5 is even more restrictive in its missions yet is praised for its great design). This is based solely off playing GTA 4 so I apologize if they did fix this in GTA 5.

1.Obsession with "realistic" graphics and the belief that only graphics that don't look realistic are inferior is the worst thing to happen to gaming.

2. If game consoles do ever die, Sony will more than likely be the biggest cause of it with their lack of concern for cost feasibility. Just look at the losses incurred to the devs and Sony themselves at the start of the PS3's life.

3. The drop in quality of games and entertainment derived from games drops proportionately to the increase in specs of the hardware.

4. Give me an old 16 bit game any day of the week and it will probably be more fun than a next-gen shooter.

I found Catherine's gameplay absolutely insufferable, which is a shame. I love the Persona games' stories, so I was really looking forward to Catherine.

]schindler's list is fun because you enjoy it[/B]. that's what fun means. i honestly do not understand what your point is.

I feel like you have a very different definition of "fun" than most people would. I enjoy something like shindler's list because it made me feel something, it was harrowing and hard to watch at times, it was inspirational, etc; but I wouldn't call it a "fun" movie. It was certainly entertaining because I was attached to the characters and the story, but it wasn't fun. Just like the normandy scene in Saving Private Ryan isn't some "good old popcorn fun" in the same way an action scene from Commando is.

On #2 - hasn't this swung the other way, with Sony abandoning custom architecture in order to keep hardware production and software development costs down?

- I believe that Mega Man has a better shot of being revived by Capcom than if Capcom went out of business and they had to sell all of their IPs to another company. And by another company, I don't mean Comcept or Nintendo since neither are likely to get Mega Man (Comcept probably can't afford to buy the IP and Nintendo is going to get Monster Hunter first if Capcom goes out of business). I don't see Mega Man returning with another company outside of maybe Namco-Bandai. Unlike most people, I don't see Capcom's treatment of Mega Man as less of an attempt to kill the IP/spite at Inafune and more or not knowing what to do (which applies to the entire company as a whole).

- I consider Capcom to be redeemable. Despite the many, many mistakes they have made this generation, I believe that they are capable of turning around. Hopefully, having only $152 million in the bank and Mighty No. 9 doing so well will start to humble the company before it is too late.

- At the end of the day, I predict that Super Smash Bros. 3DS & Wii U will have fifty or more characters (transformation included) with minimal cuts (one or two). I also think Roy will be returning to the roster. Mega Man's inclusion should be seen as a very encouraging sign for the roster.

- There will be a significant decline in gaming this gen or next gen, but not a crash that the destroys the industry. However, the industry will revive and will end up being better than ever.

Maybe more later.

While I know why people love it I couldn't find one enjoyable thing about Last of Us and dislike almost everything about it. In fact I enjoyed Lost Planet 3 infinitely more than LOU.

Is this really that controversial? Not pointing you out in particular, but this seems to be a pretty widely held opinion. If you go through this thread, at least ten-twenty posts every page seem to be some variation of the old "gameplay>graphics" and "Tired of teh shooterz" and "cinematic games are bad and only for dudebros" arguments.

Capcom is Capcom. I feel like they're doing a fine job with Monster Hunter (Although I wish it were available for more systems), but a lousy job with everything else in the pipeline. I don't even know what they were originally trying to accomplish with Dead Rising.

If they did collapse, it wouldn't be good for any of their IPs. Even formulaic ones like Monster Hunter still would be very different under new management like Nintendo.

You haven't tried to be respectful, you've been a dick to the only people with enough perseverance to read your inane schlock.

They certainly have more patience than me.

Liked Halo single player for the PC. Thought the multiplayer was garbage. When the second one came out I was all set to buy it but found it was Vista only. I didn't have Vista, so I kind of found this to be some kind of BS selling point for MS to help push Vista. I swore off Halo altogether after that. I have even been known to say, "Halo sucks", in certain polite company, even though I wouldn't have any way of knowing. Since I've only ever played the one.

Ok man, I am sorry. I did obviously misread the intended tone of the thread and came in a bit too hot. No personal malice or offense intended, honestly. I will take my irrational hatred of Pokemon back to the BritGAF thread where they let me be a bit cuntier than I usually get outside. It's all fun and games, I didn't mean to hit anyone in the feels or be too obtuse, and I hope some folks took it in the spirit it was intended.

When I kill sacred cows I tend to stick a fistful of dynamite in their bums rather than the more humane bolt to the head.
