Could this be a "breakout" Holiday season for the Wii-U?

Price is another element of the marketing mix that needed to be adressed, and I think they finally achieved the entry price they needed.

In France you can now find this Mario + Luigi pack for 259€:

.

A sizable part of the wii audience bit at that price. Again advertising will be key.

I only see things getting worse with all the hype around for the PS4 and XB1, especially at that price point.

At $200 though, even I would buy one, right now, today.

I don't understand why people think Mario 3D World is going to make the Wii U a contender? Wii U has been out for almost a year now, and I still have never met anyone in real life who owns one, and have only met a couple people that even know about it. I really don't think a sequel to a 3ds game with a heavy focus on local multiplayer is going to change that.

I think it will get a typical amount of holiday sales from families and for kids, but I don't think it will be as popular as the new consoles, and I don't think it's going to explode or if it's rut. Just a temporary boost in hardware sales until the next run of major releases that were delayed to 2014.

I just don't see the games coming appealing much to people who aren't big Nintendo fans and already have one. I guess Mario could move some more units to kids as X-mas gifts, or Nintendo fans on the fence. But I'm not sure at the current price point.

If PS4 and X1 stock is really limited I guess that could spur some sales from gamers wanting a new console to play this fall when the wrap up current gen backlogs.

In any case, I'm sure sales will tick up some, but I'd be surprised if it got a huge bump.

I already have a Wii U but why is there no Mario 3D world bundle coming out? Seemed like a foregone conclusion IMO.

There is a "Cherry" bundle found in retailer listings that comes out within days of 3D World. Based on the name and price, it is presumably a red console that comes with a Mario game. They already have a NSMBU pack, so the Cherry pack most likely includes 3D World.

they need to get rid of the Wii from the market in EU and NA

I can see them selling a few extra Wii Us if they can market these new bundles and releases better than they did last year

Man i bought a premium pack for 350€ at launch. Now i feel stupid.

It'll definitely sell this Christmas better than it ever has, including the launch. Nintendo are being extremely aggressive with promotion, bundles, and they have an enticing lineup for the first time in the console's lifetime. I'm confident that it will gain a significant boost in exposure and acceptance much like the way 3DS did in Q4 2011, albeit not to the same extent. Which I believe answers the OP's question.

But since this thread turned into a Wii U vs PS4/XBOne pissing contest very quickly, my view on that is that people will be buying Wii U for the games rather than hardware, and people will be buying PS4/XBOne for the hardware rather than games. A winner in that battle will be determined solely by whichever incentive consumers think is more important, and neither can be underestimated.

Bracketed by PS4/PC at the top for hardcore/dudebros end and 360/phone+tablet at the low end for casuals/family.

A very, very long shot. Some of their games need to catch on in a way no one here could predict.

People are getting a mario galaxy vibe and its by the same dev that made mario galaxy 1 and 2 thats why they are excited about the game.

I dont it will sell much (sub 2 million)

The real test this christmas is wii fit, wii sports and wii party even if GAF collectively thinks the games are already flops

Could be, sure. But is it likely? Id say no

It will do better just because it is the holiday season, everything bar suncream does better. Chances of it "breaking out" and making some insane turnaround is unprecedented in the industry. Even the PS3 in its darkest days sold much better in all regions than the Wii U is selling now. And the PS3 cost a lot more than the Wii U does and had far more fierce competition in its first year (Wii and 360).

Its certainly possible like i said, but who really expects such a massive turnaround for a Nintendo console that has done numbers similar to the Dreamcast? Other than diehard Nintendo fans, who are not really predicting this turnaround, they are simply hoping. Hope/Wishful thinking =/= reasonable prediction.

Wii U has been out for nearly a year, people are aware that it exists, its not some sort of magical plastic box that converts everyone who sees it into a buyer. People have rejected this thing, in every region.

The "Wii" brand has shown to be dead and insignificant. No matter what happens, you can be 100% certain that the next Nintendo console wont carry that name. It has no pull any longer. That boat sailed a long time ago.

People are really overestimating how PS4 and Xbone are going to do. People dont just dump that kind of money for a handful of last-gen ports. They didn't do it for Wii U and they wont do it with even more expensive consoles.

I'm getting one *shrug*

No way they don't both sell out this holiday season.

Actually people do exactly that - as long as those ports show noticable improvement.

There will be a surge but after that it goes back to flatlining until the next big release. I dont think there is anyway for Nintendo to not have any large droughts the way they are right now without any third party support.

If you believe hard enough it may happen....

Doubt it though, 140 million Ps3 and 360 owners want 1080p versions of games they like, Ps4 and One will sell out easily till Spring.

Cant see it affecting Wii U numbers, the value in their system is up to Nintendo.

No, nothing coming this holiday is big enough to make a difference.

IDK I know a good amount of people who are seriously thinking about jumping in and buying a WiiU after Sonic Lost World and Mario 3D World drop.

If you love platformers, those two are one hell of a combo.
And right now X1/Ps4 have nothing even announced to compete in the genre. (cant wait til they do)

They didn't do it for Wii U because they didn't know what it was. My guess is they still don't. My prediction is Wii U gets slaughtered compared to the competition, but does better than it has over the last 6 months combined (US only).

An effective, coherent marketing campaign would allow the Wii U to make some headway this holiday. By this, I mean they need to clearly communicate to the public that:

1. Wii U is a different console than the Wii. (Do not show people using Wii remotes in marketing materials!)
2. It has a new Mario game and an HD Zelda game, both of which will be out before Christmas.
3. It has new and improved versions of games people liked on the Wii (i.e., Wii Sports and Wii Fit U).

That said, it's an uphill battle for Nintendo. The media will be focused on the hype around two other console launches, so it will be difficult to make some noise.

Seriously for 100 dollars extra you could get a PS4 at Christmas, why would any one pick the Wii u?

Because for some people it might just have the better library. I can also see a lot of people picking one up as a secondary console for themselves and for their kids/wife. I did but mostly for myself, cannot see myself without Nintendo games. The kids just happen to love it also.

I expected the big nintendo franchises, everything else is a plus, and I think it has many already and will have more. This is what games like TW101 do, maybe they don´t move units day 1, but when someone considers getting a Wii U for Zelda WW, Mario 3DW, Mario Kart and they look at other games, games like W101 might seal the deal to move systems.

TW101
Lego City
ZombiU
MH3U
Sonic Lost World
Other Sonic game
X
CoD Ghosts
WatchDogs

No.

There will be a boost. I'm predicting a Nov-Dec sell rate of 300k combined.

PS4 will vastly outsell it.

Hard to imagine that with the competition from PS4/Xbone.

I see a good enough future for the WiiU, but I don't think it will ever "breakout" like the Wii did.
I don't see it reaching PS360 levels either.

So in your opinion the WiiU is going to see a 3DS-styled turnaround from here on out? Amazing. It's like you live in your own little world where the WiiU hasn't been shattering records for worst selling console since the NPD started tracking.

Mark my words, Sonic Lost World is going to be HUUUGE. It looks fantastic, plays fantastic, and may very well end up taking the Best Sonic Game Ever mantle off Colours.

Call me crazy, but I was gonna get a WiiU this November along with watch_dogs because I wanna play it on the gamepad and it will most likely look shoddy at best on the PS Tripple.

Too bad it got delayed. Looks like my WiiU purchase will be delayed as well.

Well, GAF has determined that in the 18-30 male demographic, PS4 will outsell Wii U this holiday.

Well done.

I still think we're missing the point considering their real audience this holiday.
Kids and parents
.

Price, marketing, system sellers, word of mouth, medias, holidays, etc. can have an impact. Moreso when they are combined. Wii U has lots of things going for it from now on.

seriously? No, these games will not be system sellers, not at all. The whole WiiU concept does not appeal to the customer. Let it go, this system is finished.

I agree. The tablet was a gamble, and it did not pay off. Too many iPads with $5.00 games.

With 3D World, Sonic Lost World, The Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3, Wind Waker HD, and more actually-good games to come next year, this season seems like the perfect time to get one. I'll be picking one up before my PS4 preorder drops.

140 Million? Where did you pull that number from?
You'd be surprised by how many people don't see a difference between 720p and 1080p. Hardcore gamers don't make up the majority of console owners, and they're the ones that tend to care more about that stuff.

It's baffling to me why Nintendo of America didn't do a TV ad for the Wii U's price cut or for Wind Waker HD. I realize they have a budget to work with, but given how badly the home console has been doing, they need to do more marketing beyond their online efforts and industry events. Clearly, it didn't work out well for Wonderful 101.

I just don't see the games coming appealing much to people who aren't big Nintendo fans and already have one.

Nintendo fans aren't all hardcore enough to buy a box because it has "Nintendo" written on it, you know. I love Mario, but the price of the Wii U was really steep for a 2D Mario that, although seemingly very good, didn't look all that new. Nintendo Land is the kind of game you play if it comes in the box as a pack-in, but that's the extent of its appeal to me. Game & Wario looked extremely lazy. Pikmin 3 and Wonderful 101 look like very good games, but their appeal is definitely limited to a rather narrow audience. And finally, Wind Waker HD is a remake of a game that still holds up graphically.

But now looking at just how good Super Mario 3D World seems to be, and Sonic Lost World as well as Donkey Kong in February, along with a price drop and attractive bundles, now we're talking. I almost wanted one last year because system launches are always fun, but that was about it. Now I really, really want one. So it's gonna grab more Nintendo fans' attention whenever more new quality Nintendo games are released. The 3DS didn't look all that great for a while either, with relatively few must-owns that weren't remakes, but look at it this year. We're swimming in games. It only became a must-have system when it started getting a wide variety of great Nintendo games in different genres.
