Could this be a "breakout" Holiday season for the Wii-U?

The key word there being 'technically'. It says it all. I get what you are saying but it's nothing more than a loophole. People always describe the WiiU as 'next gen' and then have to add in caveats.

I'd say 99% of the gaming public wouldn't describe the WiiU as a 'next gen' system but once you start explaining technicalities then I'm sure they would see your point.

And I used the word 'egregious' playfully and it clearly struck a cord with him.

I didn't say Wii U was 'next gen', since it's already out. The Wii U is a current gen system with last generation hardware.

Nice anecdote, now justify your claim. How do you know this? You have your ear to every family in America's door? I know kids who flip about Mario games and Zelda still gets people excited. You sure you don't have a narrative you are trying to push?
I have no hidden agenda, save for the fact that I'm not prepared to pay £250 for a new console, so as to only play Nintendo games. That won't look as good as PS4/XBone titles. And that will only be available on a system where there will literally be nothing else worth playing.

The primary issue the Wii U has now is messaging, in that people don't realize the thing is a new console. i.e the name continues to damage.

In terms of time-frame, the Wii U is next gen. In terms of tech, it's current gen.

Wii U: current gen hardware at next gen prices.

Defining a console generation as anything other than time frame is fucking stupid.

1) thats your opinion

Obviously... posts don't need to be plastered with "IMO" for you to asume that the poster is expressing his opinion.

This thread has made me realize one thing...
NeoGAF is a breeding ground for businessmen. I'd like to ask a few people in this thread to run my future company.

No, and people listing something like W101 are hilarious. The game bombed miserably worldwide and this holidays season it will do jack shit for the WiiU. It will track below 360 and PS3.

Pretending one way is the only way is equally "fucking stupid". Let's just forget that at one time console generations were always referred to by bits.

What I would want to happen is irrelevant. The fact of the matter is the same people trying to push the idea that Wii U is already dead tried to do the same for 3DS. I'm not expecting the same exact recovery, but I do think Wii U will recover enough this Holiday season to do well.

We'll see

It better be, if Wii-U sales dont pick up by this Christmas you can hang it up. I cant see MK8, Smash and Zelda saving the system by late next year. As others said, itll be too little too late.

Can this be a "breakout" holiday season for the Wii U?

It can and will be. With the WindWaker bundle providing a nice boost, Nintendo should keep them coming. They already have bundles announced for EU i believe, just bring them over to NA. The current library is looking really good and Sonic Lost World/Mario 3D World will only add to that. There's just enough 3rd party support there with Ghosts, Batman, and AC4. Add DK Tropical Freeze in Feb for continued momentum and I see a historic comeback about to take place.

But I'm an optimist...

The holidays are the time of the year when kids get the hot new presents.

Xbone / ps4 are the new hotness, wii u is old & busted.

new hotness > old & busted

i know you think its bad but thats what it is.
Kids usually don't get $500 presents; cause that's what a PS4+a game will cost; not to mention an Xbox.

However, it will surely compete with PS3 and 360; but they are not going to be really that cheaper [$50 or something]; so I would say it definitely has a chance. But it will obviously not put the world on fire; but I am pretty sure it will be the best selling next gen console.

Now if I was a kid who wanted a "cheap" console, I would not want a Wii U. Only because that would get you bullied at school, as it wouldn't be the "cool" thing (no GTA). The kid would most likely end up looking like a loser, and resent their parent(s) forever.

Not without a price drop. I'll bite when I can get the 32GB version for $150, with a game bundled in. Even 32GB just seems ridiculously small for this day and age, but considering WiiU games don't seem to be getting the same kind of DLC support that the other systems are getting, maybe it's not as big of a deal as I think it is.

I'm still wondering why people think 3D World is going to push some extraordinary amount of units that didnt already get the system for NSMBU.

Seems logical to me. For less money than last year, you will have a second big Mario platformer to play. It also happens to be the bigger, fresher one of the two.

Even better, for the price of the system post-price drop, you'll be able to get NSMBU (and the Luigi DLC) bundled in anyway. Apparently you can even get that bundle for 259.99€ in France, and a Mario 3D World bundle for 299.99 is rumored as well.

Lower price + more appealing games = sales boost likely.

But now, I honestly have hope for the Vita as it's far more competitively priced(cheaper than a 3DS XL) and also has more development support.

The Vita could take away some of the 3DS's thunder in the next few months as people start realising how gorgeous the hardware is, and how cool some of the games are.

Just like how the PS3/XB360 managed to enrapture audiences when they reached a certain price threshold, so too will the Vita ensnare previous 3DS gamers.
Maybe not super quickly, but yes, they will change. Especially now that the Vita is cheaper and has better tech. To the average consumer, the Vita is more exciting a proposition.

I think if Nintendo wait too long, they'll find themselves in the same situation with the 3DS as what happened with the Wii. Sales of 3DS will tank, and Nintendo will have no choice but to rush another handheld to market.

I was agreeing with everything you were saying about the Wii U and then saw this.

This reads like fan-fiction and is the equivalent of saying the Wii U will sell more than the 360 and PS3 combined this holiday season.

The key word there being 'technically'. It says it all. I get what you are saying but it's nothing more than a loophole. People always describe the WiiU as 'next gen' and then have to add in caveats.

You don't seem to understand what generation means. Let me clear up your confusion.

NES/Master/TurboGrafx were all part of the same generation.

SNES/Genesis/Neo-Geo/Jaguar/3DO/CD-i were all part of the same generation.

Saturn/PSX/N64 were all part of the same generation.

Dreamcast/PS2/Gamecube/Xbox were all part of the same generation.

Wii/PS3/Xbox360 were all part of the same generation.

Wii U/PS4/Xbone/Ouya are all part of the same generation.

This is not a caveat or a loophole or whatever other word you don't seem to understand. This is a fact.

And that invalidates his argument...how?
The PS2 had shoddy DC ports when it was first released (Rayman 2, DoA 2 etc). But even if the DC had exciting software lined up (Soul Calibur etc), it still wasn't enough. The market didn't budge.

You can drag a horse to water but you can't make it drink.

The Wii U is dead.

Now if I was a kid who wanted a "cheap" console, I would not want a Wii U. Only because that would get you bullied at school, as it wouldn't be the "cool" thing (no GTA). The kid would most likely end up looking like a loser, and resent their parent(s) forever.

Now you're just blatantly spewing bullshit

I really want the Wii u to so better but it doesn't seem likely at the moment. 2014 looks like a better year, hopefully that gets the ball rolling.

Pretending one way is the only way is equally "fucking stupid". Let's just forget that at one time console generations were always referred to by bits.

No.

The other definition is a silly, childish way to write off particular consoles in arguments solely based on their graphical capabilities.

after actually playing around with one I really like the Wii U, hoping it can improve over it's past performance this holiday.

We'll see

[chart]

Look at that Nintendo 64. It went from shit to huge in one Xmas. Based on what? Diddy Kong Racing? I'm sure Goldeneye helped as it was a phenomenon and that was apparently an August release. But that just goes to show, it only takes one game to give a struggling console a powerful shot in the arm.

I'm not predicting that kind of Xmas for Wii U. But looking (anecdotal) at this forum and the skyrocketing Miiverse totals for Zelda, I'm not predicting disaster either. Realistically you have:

Wii U - $299 with a popular $50 game
PS4 - $399 + 60 dollar game separate
Xbox One - $499 + 60 dollar game separate

That makes the Wii U attractive for the consumer. Of course the main problem is the 360/PS3 will be MORE attractive. Unless everyone already has those and are looking for something new.

The trend I have noticed with the WiiU is that it is older gamers coming home to Nintendo and PC gamers that might want some console that does have games that are not on the PC.

These two groups are minor and so WiiU sales based just on these two groups will be small.

Depends on expectations. People expecting over 100k will be crushed, that's for sure. 60-70k may be more reasonable.

To be clear, the failure PS3 never sold as low as 60k in any NPD. Now we're looking at that horrible number like it would be some kind of Wii U victory =|

I am an adult WiiU owner and I get bullied by my co-workers... Kids are even more mean.

I can confirm that it's not smart telling your co-workers you own a Wii U

Uh-huh. Do you have any evidence of these bullied wii u owners gettng shunned by kids at school and then resenting their parents
Man, you never remember the time when people bought into the 3DO or Jaguar? Those people were treated as failures because they associated themselves with failures.

Why would any kid want to be "uncool" and be associated with an underperforming, undersupported piece of hardware, and which doesn't have a decent version of COD, AC, GTA, Fifa etc coming out for it?

Eh. Making predictions about Nintendo is pointless. They have asspull sales and fuck up when I think they'll do well.

However, nothing's funnier to me than a bunch of nerds speculating about how the muggles will react to stuff.

I don't want the Wii U to do better. I want it to fail so I can play Nintendo games at proper next gen graphics levels.

Thank you for confirming your heavy bias so no one has to further reply to your goofy opinions on the matter. What about our kids social standing? Good lord.

I doubt this will be a breakout holiday season for the WiiU but I do think the worst is behind the troubled console.

I think this holiday season will be the beginning of a healthy upswing that continues deep into 2014 with a big spike for Mario Kart setting up an even bigger spike for Smash U. But to clarify, I doubt either of those spikes will put the WiiU in competition with PS4/One.

Its safe to say that the best Nintendo can hope for is N64/GC ballpark marketshare and there's nothing wrong with that. Nintendo have repeated over and over again that they're not in direct competition with Sony/MS. Their biggest challenge isn't competing with the big 2, it's simply getting the word out to a completely un(mis)informed audience that they have a new system.

It's been many years since I worked videogame retail but in my experience, when shopping for a console for their kids (15 and under) parents pick Nintendo. Especially when the new systems so obviously skew older and carry a higher pricetag. I think WiiU has more to worry about from cheap PS360s than from the "new hottness" PS4/One.

You obviously have more money than sense.

What was that saying again? About a fool and his money...?

Edit: maybe you should go back to the stone age or something. Bet you love your B/W TV. Or better yet, how's that Commodore 64 holding up for you?

So no, you don't have any evidence. Alright I didn't think so

Then again you think Mario Kart 8 looks as good as Sonic Racing Transformed. You pretty much created a different reality in your head. If SRT looked as good as MK8, I'd want Ninty to go third party as well.

the year the Wii U reaches a $200 price point with Mario Kart on the Market is the year that it will sell well. That is not this year.

Captain Gyro... I rest my case.
