Could this be a "breakout" Holiday season for the Wii-U?

To be clear, the failure PS3 never sold as low as 60k in any NPD. Now we're looking at that horrible number like it would be some kind of Wii U victory =|

I can confirm that it's not smart telling your co-workers you own a Wii U

1) Agreed. The post I was responding to alluded to fanboys being crushed; my advice is to keep expectations in check.

2) What kind of immature degenerate scumbags do you guys work with? Geez. Anecdotally I work with a bunch of 20/30somethings and all consoles have strong representation. It's funny how the sony/msft master race has become more obnoxious than the PC master race...

Bold prediction: Wii U moves more hardware worldwide this Holiday than Xbone and PS4. Major turnaround? Not necessarily, but it'll do well enough to earn some more respect on here and kill the "it's a dead system" stigma.

You obviously have more money than sense.

What was that saying again? About a fool and his money...?

Edit: maybe you should go back to the stone age or something. Bet you love your B/W TV. Or better yet, how's that Commodore 64 holding up for you?

Someone wants attention. I'll let others give it to you.

I see false analogies and a lot of talk of the marketing magic bullet, as per the norm.

Anyway, unless one quantifies "breakout" it's difficult to answer the question.

It will sell better in the holidays, as does everything. And schuelma is right, historically Nintendo have a greater percentage of their sales in Nov/Dec iirc.

3D Mario will also help.

But that probably won't amount to many people's definition of a "breakout."

I'm no business expert but it seems to me they still need better advertising to actually get people interested in the Wii U. I still remember the "Wii would like to play" ads. They were attention-grabbing and really effectively got the message across that the Wii was cool and fun and unlike what was already on the market. I've seen nothing like that for the Wii U. It really seems like for this holiday season Nintendo needs to get some good ads out with strong, simple messaging about what makes the Wii U compelling and not be stingy with the advertising dollars.

Then again you think Mario Kart 8 looks as good as Sonic Racing Transformed. You pretty much created a different reality in your head. If SRT looked as good as MK8, I'd want Ninty to go third party as well.
You seen Forza 5? Try telling me that the next God of War isn't going to wipe the floor with Nintendo's Bayonetta offering...

That's the problem with talking with Nintendo "fans", who are so defensive over having wasted their money, that they can't fathom reason, and can't see the forest from the trees.

Nintendo owners: I pity you. For you know not what you do.

i'm skeptical the ps4 or xbone will have consumers stampeding into stores. don't get me wrong, they'll do great, but i don't see a balls-to-the-wall holdiday frenzy with either console. so wii U's situation isn't as hopeless as it seemed a few months ago (before the awesomeness of 3D world was readily apparent).

i still think the system is fucked though

The Wii U will never be a "thing", and will most certainly never reach critical mass. It's this generation's Dreamcast, Jaguar, Sega CD, 3DO, Virtual Boy.

I truly have no pity for posters that embarrass themselves with dumb posts.
Having an unpopular opinion is one thing, but this... this is getting the ridicule it deserves.

I'm usually pessimistic on anything Wii U, but I actually think it'll do OK over the holidays (not great, but OK, all things considered, kind of thing). Nintendo stuff tends to get a bigger boost than others during the holidays and it might get a little bit of the "they're sold out of the new PlayStation why don't we get a Wii" effect.

I guess it depends on the gaming crowd? For me, WiiU at this point has way more compelling software than what PS4 and Xbone are launching with. PS4 has some major powerhouse titles down the line at least, so I know it'll bring its A game eventually, but it's not even a contest if pitted against a One.

I'm an adult, and I have been for many of my adult years. My colleagues know that I game, and more-so, they know that I own a Wii U. I was never once bullied, nor did I regret telling anyone. Then again, I do work with adults.

The Wii U is fcuked.

I think there was a thread/news headline a few days ago about how the second batch of PS4 pre-orders sold out in like 14 hours or something.

Don't worry, there won't be a stampede. People will just have their consoles delivered to their homes.

Not even maybe. This is going to be a breakdown holiday for the Wii U. Absolute savagery, DP style, courtesy of Sony and Microsoft.

I assume you have a Wii U?

Let me know how that thing's holding up in two years.

Edit: I'm just going to go back to GTA V. Maybe you've heard of it... I hear it didn't come to the Wii U.

NPD estimates for Wii U put sales for September at 55k units, an increase of 79%. Meanwhile, 360 did 145k units and PS3 with 175k units. By the way, the Wii U price cut was officially announced back on August 28th.

I hope that is not true, i hope that the result of a price cut is not a mere 79% increase to pitiful 55k units.

OT: Has the awful 12 gig PS3 launched in the US yet? Is that why its ahead of 360 for the first time in forever? I bet GTA 5 bundle pack played a part, but i generally expect even most Joe Shmoes to be smart enough to know that it exists for their 360.

I selfishly told my 9 year old nephew that he should ask for a Wii U for Xmas (so I could play Mario 3D without wasting 300 dollars), and he responded, "Yuck, why would I want that?" Apparently it's not a popular device among the young ones at his school. He's got nothing against Nintendo though. He's asking for an XL+Pokemon X instead.

The Wii U only has the "advantage" for 6 months. Maybe. And then powerhouse titles like MGS and FF XV are going to hit. Bye bye Wii U.

Regardless of Wii U's performance, why does it seem that NeoGAF in general believes people are gonna set stores on fire to get PS4s?
I hope all systems do well (for obvious reasons durr) but I honestly fail to see why GAF believes its enthusiasm towards sonys system is shared by the general population around the globe.

If you're expecting a PS2 or Wii type reception from the PS4... well, I dunno

There's no love lost for me with the WiiU, but this post is obnoxiously douchey, contributes nothing to the discussion and is embarrassing to read.

They're just Pachter's predictions, and the PS3 one is so off as to be comical.

Off the top of my head, historically, price cuts for home consoles haven't generated that level of increase percentage-wise in the US - might look into it later.

It was announced on August 28th, but the price cut didn't go into effect until September 20th.

the year the Wii U reaches a $200 price point with Mario Kart on the Market is the year that it will sell well. That is not this year.
Yeah; I am personally holding off till SSB; and it doesn't really matter how cheap the system gets, because it's not going to get more expensive, not by much at least, and there's no point in getting a system with no game you really want to play on it.

Bayonetta is generally considered to be the best game of the genre. God of War is not. All the GDDR5 in the world isn't going to change that.

Alright, we should get real numbers soon - did not believe that the PS3 outsold the 360 in the States, maybe he just has a ton of faith in that GTA 5 bundle.

It would be interesting to see the effects of price cuts in NA, didnt the PS3 have a price cut by 50 dollars some 2 years ago? Would be interesting to compare that to the Wii U

I think the September NPD is going to crush a lot of people when the WiiU still sells terribly.

It's going to be "wait for Mario 3D", then "wait for DKC", then "wait for MK8" etc

When will the optimists concede that the systems fortunes aren't turning around?

Personally, I think its goose is already cooked. If it doesn't have a major turn around this Christmas, sales are never going to be impressive and the system will be on life support by the end of 2014. At least Nintendo will keep supporting through 2015, but after that...

Ehh I doubt it. I own one and while it's very fun, it still isn't up to par as far as features with a damn PS3 let alone a PS4 and XB1.

I'll be stunned if WiiU sells more than 600k Nov/Dec combined. I personally expect a complete bomb at 400k. But there's a good chance they might have a good black friday.

best case scenario at this point is gamecube sales

they might reach that if they do a $250 3D World bundle this Black Friday, and/or Kart and Smash do wonders next holiday.

if that doesn't work, they won't crack 20 million units sold by the time Wii U has a successor. turrible.

How about this? If a console has the kind of games you like and is well-supported, then buy it and enjoy it. Who cares if it's a "breakout hit" or a "this generation's Dreamcast" or whatever labels get thrown around in the console war pissing match? I've enjoyed my Wii U so far and am excited about the upcoming lineup; sales figures and flame wars have nothing to do with the actual quality of the games. If Sony makes good on their promise to provide well-rounded software (i.e. more than just endless FPS', sports sims, and cinematic action games) then I'll be happy to get a PS4 next year, but it won't matter if it's a huge sales success or a Wii-U level flop.

Perspective, people.

I think the Wii U is going to end up like the dreamcast when it went against the PS2. I also think it's going to have a rough time competing with current gen consoles this holiday as well.

Yeah. This. I can more or less admit it's going to be a failed product by game console standards.

With that said, it'll be interesting seeing what kind of games come out for it in 2015 and 2016.

I would concede this as a valid point, save not for the fact that the Wii U still commands premium prices.

We're not talking about a dead console here that can be picked up for chump change (along with its entire catalogue). We're talking about a console which, if people buy into it, they have no choice but to be invested in its present and longterm prospects.

For a lot of people, the Wii U console is not a sure bet. And doesn't offer the best level of return for one's investment.

This thread has some seriously delusional people. No, the Wii U is not outselling anything other than maybe the Vita in NA this holiday. Europe has already abandoned the platform.

Isn't this bannable? This guy is clearly trolling.
Like the following below? You make it sound like some sort of threat.

Actually it does matter. A lot. Strong sales leads to strong support leads to a strong library.

I was looking at PS3's sales figures for 2007, and its worst months were April and May with 82,000 units each according to NPD (the only months where it sold in the double digits).Wii U sure is doing very poorly in comparison.

No man you don't get it. If you mention it at school, you're going to get bullied. There is even confirmation that it's not a good idea to say it at work. Like if you just say" Well I enjoy it and that's all that matters" you're still going to be bullied and harassed for not buying the cool thing. It's happening everywhere
