Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

Maybe it's about time I updated my list and see if I can't alienate whoever's left.

  • PS2 was a lazy, mediocre system that merely rode that cheap DVD player gimmick and the leftover third-party ass-kissing from the admittedly great PS1 to its supposed "best console ever" status.
  • As of this writing, Wii is the best console ever. Best exclusives of this generation and a bigger library of greats than either the N64 or the GameCube. Severely underrated system.
  • The Xbox 360 controller is a bulky piece of junk that compromises in such a way between ergonomics and symmetry that it accomplishes neither. GameCube did ergonomics much better.
  • DualShock3's triggers were actually pretty good and the controller itself was the best DualShock so far. Shame that DualShock4 removed some functionality among all the cool new stuff it brings.
  • Related to the above, the Microsoft ABXY layout is all wrong and in an ideal world everything would use the Nintendo ABXY layout instead. It's a shame the former is what caught on for PC.
  • Brawl was better than Melee. Melee being as fast and heavy as it was were not points in its favor, but the game was good before the filthy competitives tore it to pieces and killed all the fun.
  • Yoshi's Island was boring. Credit is due for codifying stuff like red coins, but aside from the great-for-the-SNES graphics, it wasn't anything special. The Baby Mario mechanic was just annoying.
  • Borderlands is a mediocre shooter series that gets by entirely on its Skinner-box quest/loot system. Firefall pulled off the concept a million times better.
  • Sunshine was one of the best Mario games and FLUDD was a good mechanic. At the very least it aged better than the original N64 version of Super Mario 64 did.
  • Star Fox 64 was the weakest of the series. Assault did the classic Star Fox formula so much better and Adventures was good in its own right even if not much of a Star Fox game.
  • Mega Man 2 was an average installment that everyone only remembers because of the Wily music and overpowered Metal Blade. Mega Man & Bass was probably the best classic-series game.
  • Motion controls are still a valid control scheme and potentially even better than the beloved keyboard/mouse combo. Everyone's just too stupid to use them correctly.
  • Competitive/professional gaming is a waste of time and an indicator of the participants' unwillingness to grow the hell up and get a real job.
  • Vista and Win8 are good operating systems (for Vista, at least once it got its launch issues ironed out.) This "Windows Cycle" is a load of garbage.
  • Meanwhile, XP started as a buggy piece of crap, was pretty good for a while, and ended as an archaic piece of crap. Far from the "best Windows ever."
  • More related to the above two items than gaming, but Firefox blows and always has. I preferred IE6 over that crap and once Chrome came out, I never looked back.
  • MOBAs are pretty much everything wrong with modern gaming crushed into one genre. Particularly, DotA 2 is a bad influence on VALVe and distracting them from more significant things.
  • Pre-Microsoft Rare is overrated and even at its peak wasn't as good as Retro Studios (not that it didn't put out some good games, though.) Conker's Bad Fur Day in particular was a low point.
  • Aside from the new inFAMOUS, PS4 really doesn't look like anything special. For starters, they gooned up the controller by removing a proper Start/Select pair and pressure-sensitive buttons.
  • Video games are still just toys.
  • I still hate gamer culture.
  • Unless given reason to believe otherwise, all message board posts besides my own are mentally heard in a condescending nerd voice by default when I read them.

This is hilarious!

Uhh.

Nice to see some quality junior member posting again.

90% of the current AAA releases are disgustingly casual and anybody who exclusively plays overpriced 95% metacritic hypejobs is not a hardcore gamer to me. A chimpanzee would have no trouble playing through Assassin's Creed, Tomb Raider, Bioshock Infinite and all that popular stuff.

Games are cool and I like them and I appreciate the work developers put into them

woah now that is TOO controversial, man

but i have a confession... i enjoy video games too :(

Not cool dudes. This is the controversial opinion thread, not the total nonsense thread.

But on a serious note, because apparently I'm in the mood to be hated,

The whole 720 vs 1080 thing is wildly overblown.
The blurred pixelated gifs weren't funny.
Most people aren't going to spot much of a difference at first glance without labeling.
Anyone who spouts that "get your eyes checked" crap is probably an insufferable pissant.
Anyone who said that it's more important than framerate is a total nutso.
Naughty Dog is by far THE most overrated developer here by a goddamn country mile because their fans that act like they can do no wrong. That map thread and that Ellen Page thread were disgusting.
The Uncharted games are good, yet average (as in no different that other TPS's) third person shooters that get more praise than they should their production values, story, and the fact that the first game essentially started the PS3 recovery after the first two dismal years of its life.
The Last of Us is a much better game by virtue of not trying to sweep the fact that it's a game under the rug. And anyone who was spouting that "if you're not playing it on hard with listen off, you 're playing it wrong" crap is also probably an insufferable pissant.

And I agree with VinLAURiA's point about the "condescending nerd" voice because a lot of people here are condescending jackasses.

And as much crap as Sonic fans constantly get on this board, SonicGAF is probably THE most pleasant and personable group of folks on GAF.

- I wish we could all act like kids again and get fucking hyped for shit and not feel weird for doing it. Fuck the framerate. Fuck the resolution. Fuck the polygon count. That game looks fucking cool, I want it, lets go get it, play the shit out of it and discuss it.

- I know the Vita and Wii U are colossal fuck ups, but I wish they weren't. =(

The Halo series has the best, if not most difficult to follow (and not sure if that's due to complexity, vagueness, me being a dullard or all of the above) story when it comes to sci-fi games. This is putting the books, etc. into consideration. Yes, better than Mass Effect.

Both Ocarina and FF7 are overrated games that get a lot of praise because they were the first 3D games for each series.

Not saying they're bad games (they're not and I love them both), the flaws they have get glossed over because of the fact that they were the first 3D games.

There is nothing wrong, shameful, embarrassing, or "problematic" about erotic art or sexualized female characters.

To think as much is to be childish, selfish, or both.

These are the bits that are mostly true. The Wii is NOT the best console ever, but it is miles ahead of the Xbox 360 or the PS3.

X360 controller sucks.

Valid point on motion controls. People who complain about motion controls, sometimes I wonder if they know how to put on their own pants.

my god junior , what a huge flame shield you have !

Need more(Non-armored core) mech games(I miss you Chromehounds. RIP). Oh and space sims. Star citizen can't come soon enough. And hybrid rpg-strategys like the OG xbox Kingdom under fire games. Just in general this gen has eliminated a lot of innovative gameplay ideas.

Far more games (and really things in all media) are just fine and acceptable than either terrible or amazing.
Very true. There are actually very few truly bad games being released. People seem to criticize games more based on originality. Most games this generation are average at worst.

This whole resolutiongate is a waste of time.
I thought video games were about having fun, I guess I thought wrong.

I can see the difference between 1080p and 720p and yet, it doesn't matter to me. Same goes with frame rates, but I do appreciate a good 60fps+ game.

QTEs can be used as a device for engaging gameplay when not used lazily. The best, most recent example of this is The Wolf Among Us.

There hasn't been a good Zelda game since Wind Waker.

Implying Wind Waker was a good Zelda game. Yes, there has been a good game Zelda since Majora's Mask, it was named Skyward Sword. Also, QTE sucks.

Lastly, OoT is a great game, but not the best Zelda and not even close to be the best game ever.

With so many people are flipping their shit over 720p and calling it "resolutiongate", I'm convinced it's mostly just console warz and kicking the Xbone while it's down.

FFX is the best FF of all time next to FFVII

The Last of Us is game of the generation

C&C: Red Alert is the best RTS ever made next to Starcraft

And the one that might actually be controversial:

The new Mortal Kombat is the best one. MK2 being close 2nd.

I have and will hate this whole 8 bit retro trend. Its garbage.

I hate how pretentious everyone is about indie games.

Mass effect and bioshock series are overrated. At best they are on par with homefront.

Nintendo is for kids

Every game should be massively open world with no fast travel.

THERE....puffpuffpuff

I need to hear some justification for this opinion.

If you think it's a waste of time it's probably because you don't understand what the argument is about. Maybe you're getting to hung up on the name, was WaterGate about a hotel? "Resolutiongate" is about the lack of (or perceived lack of) improvement in hardware capability is the XBO has over last gen consoles, how MS prioritized "gimmicks" over tech similar to what Nintendo did with Wii, how a portion of the once loyal MS crowd feels deceived, how the large gaming sites are ignoring or outright denying the problem, and how they're lashing out against criticisms instead of acknowledging them. It's a pretty deep and damning argument. It's definitely not just about 720p vs 1080p in one game.

and lol at every game should be open world

fuck variety!

I simply cannot fathom how Braid is an interesting game.

totally

i think ryse looks fantastic and cant wait to play it.

halo 4 was the best of the bunch on and off-line.

infamous was an over-rated rinse and repeat fest.

kz 2 mp played 100x better with a cross battle adaptor and a wired 360 pad.

I don't actually like the story in Mass Effect and I think it has mostly uninteresting characters (except Garrus). It also reaches uncanny valley for too often for my comfort.

Need more(Non-armored core) mech games(I miss you Chromehounds. RIP).

I can get behind this. I love mechs, but very few mech games have scratched that "itch". I thought Titanfall might be that game, but it seems like the mechs are going to be just like Warhawk/Starhawk, in that they're mobile turrets that you can get in or out of.

It's not that Armored Core is that bad or anything. It's just after so many entries I'm kind of sick of the formula.

-People who justify horrible hardware strategies behind the word "fun" is stupid and deserves to play with an 8 bit console paid 1000$.

-Ouya could've become a great thing but the company behind it sucks ass

-Sony is forgetting the most important thing, the games.

-Microsoft it's a really sad company and not in the gaming side only.

-Nintendo has the mentality of a very tiny and territorial company and that is the reason of why it will remain healthy for a veeeeery long time and the reason of why it won't be a big player for long.

-Not having a console that crushes all the others is not a good thing, in the era of the nes, snes, ps1 and ps2 you knew what was the console to buy to have all the benefits now this sales balance hurts the customer like no other thing.

-this indie culture should die in a fire

Online gaming is highly overrated. For some people, it's an absolute necessity. That's something I will never get. Sure, it's fun at times, but for the most part I prefer sitting down and enjoying the game on my own. It's possible. Not only that, but apparently EVERY game has to have an online mode nowadays or it will experience huge backlash - even if the game doesn't need it at all. That's why we see so many tacked on multiplayer modes that not only make the game more expensive to make but also results in a longer development cycle. It's unnecessary and shouldn't be considered a standard by any means.

I'm not saying this is the case with every game, but generally speaking we tend to forget that gaming can be enjoyed offline, just like in the old days.

Resurrecting this topic to say Super Mario Bros 2 is underrated. It's a much better games than SMB 1 and almost as good as SMB 3. I love the music and atmosphere of SMB 2 as well.

Maybe that's not a very controversial opinion? I seem to recall that SMB is not regarded highly for being so different from the other NES games, at least artistically.

Just finished Bioshock Infinite.

In what fucking universe is this even close to being GOTY material? It's not even a good game. You have a great setup to a story and 10 hours later you get a great ending to it. In between the game is a boring shooting gallery that looks pretty.

GOTY? It's not even top 10. It's fucking whack-a-mole that shows you half an episode of Fringe before it starts and the second half when you finish.

Also tried Alan Wake and that game seems to be a poor man's Deadly Premonition.

I like Infinite.. But I think it could be one (or the only one) game that I REALLY like that I will end up beating only once.. I tried doing a second run just for the story and atmosphere and some trophies. And I just can't. The gameplay is too bad. The enemies are bad and so is the level design.

I just went to Youtube and rewatched the ending and my favorite moments instead.. Sooo good. I would rather do my 4th start to finish playthrough of Heavy Rain than a 2nd of Infinite. At least the stupid/boring sections in heavy rain don last more than 3 minutes.

That's not an unpopular opinion anymore, lol. People have come around to it. I agree on both Bioshock Infinite and Alan Wake.

Bioshock Infinite WAS worth playing though, if only to run through that world and for the mind-fuckery at the end. I enjoyed all of that stuff immensely. Nowhere near a GOTY, though.

My unpopular opinions that have gotten me in 'trouble' on my first two days with posting privilege... (lurked for years though)

Nintendo should go third party in the home console space. (Incredibly unpopular opinion with fellow nintendo fans)

AND

Assassin's Creed gameplay is fun, and in particular freerunning is still very entertaining. All these years later I still enjoy it. Pretty unpopular around here, I think.
