Any hardware launch will have duds. Be it TVs, soundbars or video game consoles.

We all know that the unboxing is the best part. And if you get a broken console there's TWO unboxings in it for you. Win/win!

Trying to come to any conclusions based on such small numbers seems ridiculous. Let's see what happens when the console officially launches.

Yeah, I don't remember people's overreactions being so magnified 7 years ago anyway.

My Mountain Dew 360 was dead out of the box at launch, don't think I ever mentioned it online, just called and got the coffin.

It always sucks when a new toy doesn't work, and it's far more likely to happen when bitter Chinese workers are putting this stuff together at a rate of a million or more a month.

Obvious lies. I've run the numbers and by my estimates there are at LEAST 1080 broken PS4s out there.

If social media was as huge back then, I honestly don't believe we'd have seen an Xbox One.

I don't know, it would have been crazy, the PS3 outrage back then really was limited to message boards other than the price, which man seemed to consider for the blu ray drive. If giant enemy crabs/Ridge racer/second job as well as the in depth hardware specs came to the mainstream PS3 would have gotten to an even rockier start, though with the RROD they would have certainly had a bit of breathing space.

Facebook was only for college students at that time.

In 2007/8? Thats when the console really started hitting the mass market. I dont think so. Besides, there was also youtube.

Edit: Just checked. Facebook was opened up to the public in sept 2006. The RROD wasnt something that seemed to happen straight away, it took a few months in most cases.

7 out of 4700 is a small number?

But that's all of them!

7 that are reported, some from vocal people or publications. There could be more that are defective but haven't been reported yet. And these are units that IMMEDIATELY became defective, there's a possibility that we may have a RROD situation where a large amount of units are defective and it's only a matter of time until they croak.

I think news online moves so swiftly these days, much more than even a few years ago. This greatly amplifies the core community's awareness and a herd mentality creates both positive hype and widespread fear so easily. It doesn't help that the two biggest competitors are publicly duking it out head to head and I think the collective stakes are perceived to be very high for fanboy camps when in reality, both new systems will do fine.

I said in a different thread, I bet there were PS2 failures right out of the gate too but you didn't have social media and YouTube to really share it on.

Do you walk around worrying about all of the negative things that could happen in your life or do you wait until you have a better idea of what is going on and act accordingly?

Actually if it was a RROD situation they would manage to survive a bit longer.

This just sounds like a few faulty units to me unlike the whole RROD situation.

It's a little worrisome, but we shouldn't jump to conclusions just yet. However, all those saying 8 reported out of 4000+ consoles need to realize that making hasty generalizations work both ways. It doesn't mean there's a mere 0.2% failure rate, it simply means that 8 people have reported it that you know of.

At this point, we can only wait and see what happens, and whether this is indeed a real issue that we need to worry about.

I love neogaf but man... These overreactions are just really silly and shows that there might be more 8-12 year old kids in here then I thought. Defective units are normal. In laptops for example it varies around 10 to 15%...

Yep. My retina macbook bro had a defective screen. Got one the week it came out. Horrible blotches on the screen whenever white was being displayed and nasty image retention issues.

If you're an early adopter that's the small risk we take. Bitching over the internet won't fix it but a warranty will.

If it's screwed up, send it in and relax. Take comfort in the fact that the odds are in your favor that your unit will be just fine.

Actually i do think people are overreacting, i mean if we talk about a 5% failure rate which doesn't sound like the end of the world to me... we are talking about 200+- (we don't know how many are out there, prolly a bit more than 4k) defects.
And if this is the case... i am pretty fucking sure we would have had alot more reports than the 8 or so that we have now.

There were PS2s that outright caught fire. Now that would be amazing to see on twitch.

You would need 470 to fail before you would even be above the normal failure rate of the PS3 within 2 years.... at least for the first generation model. Square trade had posted their statistics in 2009. 10% of all squaretrade pruchasers for PS3 died before the 2 year expired. 25% of the Xbox 360 died in the same period.

The 470 of course is over 2 years... so you would only expect 100~ or less in the first couple months. 7 is nonsense.... its less than a fraction of 1%. We'd be hearing a hell of a lot more by now if it was a huge issue.

This is just silly; not everyone with a defective unit is going to report it online to the masses.

A 3% failure rate on 4000 units still gives you 120 busted units. If only 10% of people who got busted PS4s made it to twitch/reddit/youtube/gamefaqs/gaf/etc you'd still end up with 4-5 more busted PS4s than we know about.

He shouldn't have said anything lol. Blowing this up for no reason.

Yes, because silence wouldn't make this worse.

And "No reason?" Uh, how about reassuring people who plan to go out in the freezing cold tonight that pick up their $400+ purchase that they shouldn't worry about it.

Lock if old or not needed.

Be assured we are investigating reported PS4 issues. The number is very small compared to shipped, we believe they are isolated incidents.

Is there a MS statement on the RROD while it was happening, I would like one for comparison sake.

Well it depends how you look at it, I don't think many of the 360s RROD'd in the first week either.

Things could get worse they could stay the same its impossible to say.

To be fair, failures out the gate because of a busted/bent/shit hdmi port are a lot better than a ticking countdown to post warranty death. Ones a manufacturing bug and the others a design flaw.

I would imagine @yosp knows how many more than 7 units were reported faulty.
The only semi-worrying thing about this is that IGN and Kotaku both god bonked ones but Kotaku's issue was different from all the others so meh.

I'm not worried , I have an extended protection plan. If this happens to me 3 years from now maybe i'll worry since it will be out of warranty.

You'd figure they'd be super paranoid about press units and would plug them in before handing them over.

Looking into it

Well well well
HI11ZONE rejoice you will not have keep on pressing your TV inputs and also counting up until you hear two beeps anymore!

Does faulty hardware usually show symptoms day one that renders the hardware unusable?

Because in that case, besides the statistics I see people posting, I have never owned a faulty piece of hardware.

That said, I expect this to be a software issue, mainly.

Pretty sure they denied it at first, didn't even acknowledge it was a real problem. It was at that point I think either the reporting on it got serious (as in outside of gaming obviously) or class action lawsuits were spoken of. I think that also tied into new terms where class action lawsuits were voided.

I may be misremembering though, god this generation was long.
