Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

I'm helping my friend try to pick out a new TV. Any suggestions? His max budget is around $1600, either a 55" or 60". He's mostly going to use for gaming and just regular TV watching.

Might be able to get a Panasonic TC-P55VT60 for close to that price. Best you're going to get for the money tbh. Reference grade PQ.

It's truly shocking how much cheaper TVs are in the US compared to Europe. 1600$ doesn't even buy you a 50" GT60 over here.

I'm hoping the W900A goes on sale during Black Friday. I really want to pick one up. Though if I order it now, Amazon will honor a Black Friday drop correct?

Unfortunately, it's not featured in any of the national ads that have been released. Amazon is running a 6% cash back on it right now though and it still comes with the free 1 year memberships to Netflix and Hulu Plus. That may be your best bet.

I've had mine for over a month now and it's absolutely the most stunning television and perfect for my PS3 and Wii U.

Thanks for the answers guys. This raises two other questions for me though. This page mentioned the Pioneer Kuro and I remember those screens looking amazing so I looked on a local craigslist variant in my country and there's a couple of pretty affordable PDP-LX5090's. Nearly identically priced to a new ST60 here. Would this be worth looking into? Providing I check carefully for burn-in etc. Is there anything else I should be looking for when buying secondhand? Also how do the Samsung plasma's hold up? You mentioned them but are they comparable to Panasonic's? Panasonic's ST60 reputation seems to be second to none but I'd be willing to consider a Sammy if they're good. Sorry for being so exhaustive with my answers but I can't make a purchase like this lightly.

I can only speak of my personal experiences, but I certainly would never recommend a Samsung plasma over a Panasonic one.

When I bought my PS3 over 4 years ago, I got my first Panasonic plasma and still have it today. A couple weeks after getting it, my sister and her husband decided they wanted one just like it. Even though I strongly recommended them to go with either Pioneer or Panasonic, they went with a Samsung one instead.
Not even a day had passed and I got a phone call to come over and calibrate the set because it wasn't looking as nice as the one I had.
Needless to say, no amount of calibration can compensate for built quality.

They have now gotten rid of it a couple of weeks ago since it started getting black lines. :-/
Ended up picking a Panasonic LED since plasmas use too much power for their tastes.

I myself just ordered a new TX-P65VT60E last week as I don't want to be in a postion where I'm not able to get a new set when they are all sold out, even though my old one is perfectly fine. That's how much I have enjoyed their plasmas. :)
The old 46" will end up in the bedroom while the new 65" should arrive just in time for my PS4.

This past years Samsung Plasmas are pretty good. They were always horrible in the past.

A main reason people are recommending the Samsung Plasmas is because they have better brightness levels. I don't watch TV with my room full of sunlight, so it isn't really a problem for me.

The VT60 looks a bit too pricey here in Canada, but it seems like we will be able to find a ST60 within that price range. Thanks for pointing us in the right direction!

Samsung's 7000/8000 series plasmas have been great for the last few years now...

I don't know much about the cheaper units, since I never really shopped for one.

So here's my dilemma. I just bought a house where I want at least a 65 inch tv for my living room. I'm looking at the ZT60, VT60, and Samsung F8500.

Right now I have an excellent 55 inch Samsung full array local dimming LED that was rated the best LED for a while. Samsung UN55B8500.

I'm primarily going to be gaming in my downstairs room where I was thinking of placing my 55 inch Samsung LED that I already have.

I'm reconsidering and thinking of placing the Samsung LED in the living room and buying a new Sony 55W900A for my downstairs room for gaming. Then in the next year or two, get a 65 inch 4k (OLED if prices drop a good amount) tv for my living room and sell the Samsung LED. I really really want the Sony 55W900A for the minimal input lag that I hear everyone mentioning. I'm sure the picture quality is pretty fantastic as well.

So what would you guys do? Buy a 65 inch ZT60, VT60, or F8500 for the living room now and use my 55 inch Sammy LED downstairs, or buy a 55 inch W900A for downstairs, use my Sammy LED in the living room for a year or two and get a bigger size 4k/OLED tv then?

I'm leaning towards getting the latter option. I really would like minimal input lag as it is huge for shooters and I remember how fun the original Halo and Halo 2 used to be for me, and how I just thought I sucked in Halo 3 (got a new tv). What say you GAF?

Hi there GAFers,

I'm looking to upgrade my old 32" Samsung.

I got my eyes on two LEDs (don't want to risk Plasma, as I very often let static images for very long times on the screen):
Sony Bravia KDL-42W655: http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00C97ZGFG/
Philips 40PFL4508K/12: http://www.amazon.de/dp/B00BWLXSS2/

The Sony is 42", and... well, it's a bravia.
The Phillips is 40", but has 3D (which I don't really carte about), is cheaper, and has one more HDMI port...

Does anyone know how they compare on screen quality/image processing of the TVs?
I'll mostly be at around 2.5m (8.2 feets) of the screen.

Picked up my W900A today. Set it all up (ARC is awesome) and tried a few recommended settings floating around on the web... Wow, this thing is amazing. I use it for both blu-rays and as a PC monitor. Such a huge upgrade over my 2007 46" Samsung LCD.

Just saw a few 4k tv with 4k content on it. I do believe that will be my next tv purchase. The picture was so clear and the color are so vibrant and black level are so deep.

I hope you are ready to either wait a couple years, or hand out quite a hefty sum.

The quality is indeed stunning, but given there isn't really any 4k content yet, I don't see the point.

Just ordered the 50" ST60 over the 42". You guys are such a bad influence on me but I'm so giddy to get it. Upgrading from a 26" LCD but ever since I saw Sin City on a Panasonic screen a couple of years ago I've wanted a plasma. And now it's happening :)

Anyone got any links to finding the best settings for KDL42W654

I've had a KDL42W653A for about a week now, and I've spent some time tweaking it. The 653 and 654 models are exactly the same, other than the bezel being black on the 653 and silver on the 654. I've used a Spyder 3 meter for calibrating grayscale and color. I'm pretty happy with the settings, but I'm not sure I entirely trust the Spyder, as it's a few years old, and these things don't stay accurate forever. I will however get an I1 Display Pro for christmas, so I'll update my post if I find inaccuracies. So here are my settings. Keep in mind that the white balance settings are probably particular to my exact tv, but feel free to give them a go. I calibrated 2 Samsung D8000 screens recently, and actually ended up with the exact same corrections to white balance, so sometimes the settings can work on multiple panels.

The game mode is calibrated with HD709 standards in mind, but white point and colors should be the same for sRGB and HD709? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Please try them out, and feel free to give feedback if you have suggestions!

Some general tips from below:

Make sure that Home->Settings->System Settings->Eco->Light Sensor is set to off. This improves the light output of the screen, and my settings are based upon this being turned off.

Make sure that Home->Settings->Display->Screen->Display Area is set to Full Pixel.

Also, for the person complaining about the headphone jack being in the back (can't remember who it was), here's a trick: Leave the headphones in at all times (that might not be an option if you use them elsewhere of course.) Toggle Home->Settings->Sound->Headphone Speaker Link to Off to play both from the speakers and the headphone. There will then be separate volumes for headphones and speakers.

It's not that simple, not for gaming. OLED tech in itself is fine, but Samsung's new OLED TV has abysmal input lag (65ms) making it a complete no-go for gaming.

It's always relative and people need to choose TV wisely, OLED/LED/LCD/Plasma aside

That being said, I still think a good quality OLED TV will top other formats of screen. Still, if you already own a 1080p TV, maybe you should wait for 4k ones and when 4k becomes gaming "standard" (if and when because even 1080p isn't the standard yet).

Sadly on both count you are right; content and price are not there at the moment.

About to pull the trigger on a Sony W900a, but out of curiosity how do PS1/2 games look on 55 inch screens. I get the feeling it's going to look like ass, and not the oohhh nice ass kind.

I tried to google for some videos or screenshots but couldn't find anything.

I use a component-to-hdmi for my PS2, and the image is great. Low resolution or course, but crisp.

They're still expensive, but 4KTV prices drops for one week. CamelCamelCamel alerted me and I check AVSForum to see what's up.

OK I was gonna make a new thread for my questions, but this thread seems better:

I haven't bought a new tv since my last one in 2007, and my question is how have 1080p tvs changed in the past 6 years? I'm sure they had to have, but I'm not sure in what way.

I have a Samsung LN-T4061F. It's a 1080p/60Hz LCD and I would LIKE to upgrade on account of the new consoles and such.
But I'm wondering how much better an upgrade would really be? Do all new tvs that are still 1080p have THAT much of a better picture? Also some recommendations would be helpful if they do.
Also, do you think planing for the future now and going for a 120hz or more would be better than just upgrading to another 60hz?

Thanks, Gaf. I lub u.

Also I lied a little, I bought this one for my bedroom last black friday and I like it a lot. Thinking about getting the same one just in 46". Good upgrade from what I have?

There is no option for Full
Just - 1 or +1 or Normal

After getting the right settings dialed in, my god is this S60 beautiful. PS4 on this thing is like sex.

if you could post your general settings, that'd be cool. I know every room is different, but I'm a newbie to this whole thing. did you do it all yourself?

Okay GAF, I'm wanting to upgrade my tv in the near future.. Currently using a Vizio 42" VT420M from way back in 2010. It's held out well over the years, but I'm noticing random anomalies cropping up in my everyday viewing (I use it in my living room for all my entertainment. PC and game systems are all hooked up to it via HDMI).

Could any kind soul direct me or guide me in where I should begin looking/what I should be looking for?

Things I want:

  • Most importantly, my budget will probably be $500-1000.
  • Low, low lag. The lower the better.
  • Large screen size, preferably. 40"-50" would be fine. Though larger than that is definitely okay.
  • As for LCD, LED, or Plasma... I'm unsure which would be the best for me. I plan on using the TV for the same things I do now: Everyday PC use, streaming HD content, playing PC games at ridiculously awesome resolutions, playing PS4, Wii U, and Xbox One content on it, and that'll prolly be it. Definitely need guidance on the screen type!
  • Also, I don't need it to be 3D-enabled, as I will probably never use that functionality. Same goes for app-intensive TV's... I use my PC directly for any streaming, so the TV need not have Netflix or Hulu or the like. That being said, I know most TV's come equipped with app/3D functionality these days, so if it's got it, oh well. As long as it doesn't tack hundreds of dollars to the price, I'll be fine with it.

I think I've covered everything! I hope someone on here can help me out. :D

P.S. If this isn't the correct thread for this kind of post, please direct me to that thread! Thanks :)

Finally managed to order my BENQ W1070 Projector.
Should arrive in two days, and I can't wait to test it with Pacific Rim and the PS4 in two weeks !
Tonight I'll order a Samsung UE40F6640 too, to put in the bedroom, should be a good end of the month :D

Got a W900A last week and a PS4 today.

Gotta say, the W900A gives a beautiful crisp picture with fantastic colours, deep blacks and low input lag (19ms). PS4 looks great on it.

So Gaf, I finally took the plunge and ordered a new telly. Just seems like the right time with the new consoles also hitting and I wanted to get it calibrated and set-up beforehand. Will be hard parting with my full-array local-dimming LG, but after finally testing the input lag over the weekend and finding out it was more than 60ms, realised that it was definitely time to move on.

Was an eventual choice between a Sony 46" W9 or 50" W6 and I settled on the W6 after discovering that Currys exclusively do it in a black bezel version but with passive 3D as a 50W685 model. Would rather not have to use Currys but what can you do.

I did fancy the triluminous colours of the W9 but reviews seem to suggest that the setting is best left off for accuracy anyway. Other than that, there wasn't anything else to set it apart for me aside from the additional motion enhancement modes of which the only one I'll possibly use is the Impulse setting for gaming that also happens to be the only one available on the W6 anyway. Also preferred the appearance of the W6 as well after seeing them both in the flesh. Can't say I'm keen on the turquoise finish on the W9 and the even slimmer bezel of the W6 gives the illusion of an even bigger difference in actual screen size.

Anyway, really looking forward to getting it delivered and calibrated. Was initially disppointed that it only has 2-point greyscale controls, but might be a good thing for my OCD as I've tweaked and tweaked previous sets for weeks on end when they've 10 or 20-point controls!
