Persona 5 announced for PS3, winter 2014

Every RPG people complain about grinding in is usually a game I've never actually had to grind in, except by choice (to look for a specific item or Persona).

I remember for years everyone complaining about how grindy Dragon Quest games are and when I started playing one, I was shocked by how easily every stumbling block was solved by changing my strategy or thinking around it.

Right. Before I played DQ VIII I heard all about how hard and grindy it is but when I played I found out that it was pretty easy. Never grinded once, except for the post game.

I don't understand the hype for Persona 5 when I felt the same for Persona 4 for the PS2, bought it when it came out, loved the dialogs, the japanese setting and the story but eventually lost all interest and stopped playing the game because even though the battle system is great, crawling around dungeons is mindnumbingly boring!

I just cannot, for the life of me, accept in this day and age dungeons with lots of levels that all have more or less the same layout, similar art designs and mobs/bosses positioning. Dungeon after dungeon. And you do the exact same things in each of them. Christ almighty, just no.

Persona 5 has a lot to prove to be worth considering a purchase, personally.

P5 may ditch the random dungeons and change up the formula so wait and see.

Teddie by himself stole 90% of all the darkness from the plot.
Not to mention that only 2 people, and only one of them that people actually cared about very vaguely, died during the whole thing.
That's not to say that Persona 4 didn't have dark moments but compare that to 3:
Strega murdering people during the dark hour because it was interesting, Kenji dieing, Ken's mom being murdered by Kenji, Chidori repeatedly cutting herself and her death, Mitsuru's father dieing, having to kill a friend one way or the other near the end as the avatar of Nyx, apathy syndrome victims everywhere, etc. etc.
Persona 3 had its light moments too, of course, it's just that they weren't in focus as much as Persona 4 built most of the game around light moments.

Shinji not Kenji lol.

Each game has its own style & tone. P3 had it different, P4 had it different. Same for the the first two and I appreciate each one for trying to be different and enjoy them for what they do individually.

A reasonable opinion? WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE!!?
Seriously though, I agree. I enjoy the basic "Persona Structure" of the sim and dungeon crawler mix. I can appreciate the different tones for each game.

I feel like what has made the last 2 Persona entries great has been the writing. The characters are so well written. They feel like real people you want to hang out with.

As long as the core Persona structure is in place with well-written characters I'm sure Persona 5 will have a lot to love.

It wasn't exactly "dark" in the sense of 18+ games but the mood later on was sombre. It felt more serious.

Sure, but the way fans of P3 throw around the word "dark" at every damn turn makes it seem as if you play a little girl trying to escape a bunch of serial rapists.

P3 is chock-full of pop and hip-hop music, bright colors, dumb jokes, cheerful characters and anime clichés. It is anything but "dark". If you want to elaborate on the tonal differences between P3 and P4, use another word.

I'd pay that compliment to all of them really. I don't enjoy the gameplay of P2, but for the time I spent with it, it seemed to be just as strongly written as the latter games and that aspect I was really really into.

I'd really dig a darker toned Persona in a College setting. The teaser talks about being slaves, the image also has chains tied to what looks like school chairs? Not sure what they're going for here but so far I'm really digging the tone. It can still have the humor, I just don't want it to be too cheesy/immature like P4.

Unfortunately, Japan is Persona's biggest fan base and P4 really jumped Persona into popularity with it's wacky characters, high school dating sim, and light heart humor. I expect this to maintain most of what made P4 so popular. It's sucks to say that it's a stretch that I'll never get to see a mature cast of main characters (I know nothing about P3 so forgive me if that cast is a lot more mature than P4's). The teaser is giving me hope though as it does look like they're going for a darker tone this time. It's just one image though so you never know. Ether way I expect a mind blowing story like with what I had with P4.

Well if you're talking about region lock it don't think it will happen. P4A was region locked because of option to have japanese language in both voices and text. The game came out around the same time in Japan and US and they feared people would in Japan would import the cheaper US version. I doubt P5 will have dual voice option and most certainly US version won't have a japanese text option and I can't see them releasing the game close in both US and Japan. But if you're talking about Zen and all that publisher stuff than well yeah we're going to wait here for a long time unless SEGA or some else steps up but I doubt it.

The problem was region locking + delaying. But your explanation is really logic, I'm a little less worried now.

Still, I hope SEGA does something about distribution here.

I've never had any problem with grinding in P4 neither 3. In Persona 3, I replayed some floor looking for people that gets caught in Tartarus. In Persona 4 I do it to finish the siquests and defeat the miniboss. It's kinda boring, but not something that will make me love both games a little less.

And about "Kenji"... I don't know. I didn't feel anything when Shinji died and I couldn't care less about Ken, it was just furniture. The only guys in the party that I developed some kind affection was Junpei
(Chidori's death really saddened me)
, Mitsuru and Yukari. Koromaru, Akihiko, Ken, Shinji and Fuuka didn't mean that much to me.

In Persona 4, however, I loved every single of those guys. People can say whatever they want about P4 being lighthearted, but the characters feel more "real" to me than the bunch of miserables that populated P3 city.

In P4 they actually feel like teenagers and, most importantly, friends. I like that they can joke and have that much fun even when there is some serious stuff going on. And I like every single one of them. Even Teddie, to a certain degree.

Even if P5 is darker, I want Team Persona to keep that feeling that made the main guys in P4 so especial. I don't need 9 months of doom and gloom. People needs to disconnect some times, and it didn't look like they rest enough in P3.

I think I've decided that I'll just have no expectations of the tone that I want this game to have.

Thinking back to P3 and P4, the release time gap between both of them was like 2 years and they used almost the exact same gameplay mechanics and assets... yet both games feel very unique to me despite the short delay. There's some aspects I like of one game over the other, but I would never recommend playing one game over the other. Each game deal with its own theme, and it sets the tone appropriately for that.

Whatever theme they decide to explore, I'll gladly accept it. I trust them to show me something new, I don't wish for it to be like my preferred game of the series; they've already explored it. A darker or lighter tone is just the means to doing that, not the main attraction of it IMO. I wouldn't worry much over P5 possibly trying hard to appeal to be Persona 4-2... they're milking that cow with the spinoffs already, and a good business decision as well.

Lincoln should be one of the party members.

You mean the MC.

"Racisma The Elder, you will not stop the power of friendship. I will emancipate the slaves in the new world! -Abraham Lincoln.

Burn My Dread played through loudspeakers when Abraham Lincoln finished the Emancipation Proclamation.

Not gonna lie, I liked Persona 4's tone. All the bright yellow and happiness in the midst of a murder mystery and struggling to accept yourself, it provided a nice contrast. I would have liked that game a lot less if it didn't have that stuff.

Yep. The whole Scooby-Doo aspect of P4 is why it's my favorite Persona game. I liked that I could hang out with my friends, do a silly school show and go on vacations while still investigating the crazy murders and searching for my true self.

The tones & themes stuck with me long after I beat the game.

Whether or not people care about certain characters varies from person to person, but I agree that Persona 4 really made you love the cast. My problem with it is that it spends a lot of time building that bond with the characters rather than plot.

To be clear, I like 4 a lot, I just think that it can't get much lighter than that and still have a story with weight.

Edit:
This thread made me want to play P2. Are we ever going to get Eternal Punishment on PSP ? Would like to play both IS and EP on my Vita.

EP is in the PS1 section and it seems we're not gonna get the psp version.

I hope P5 will take place in a giant prison which is sucked into the Makai. Most of the characters become crazy and some of them start to kill each other, mutate into disgusting creatures, other humans become Metal Fetishists and implement pieces of metal into their body to become stronger.
To escape this hell, the hero will need to beat the arch demons who govern this world.

Oh dear that's dark, throw in some prison tape and you got yoursf a rated M game alright.

It would be interesting to see if the had a shift in the style of game play like they had from P2 to P3.

PS1: Classical first person dungeon crawling with an emphasis negotiating with demons

PS2: Third person dungeon crawling with an emphasis on social links.

PS3:???

Third person, cover based shooter.

With dating elements of course.

Third person is definitely in. I think social links will be back too as that's one of the reasons that made people like P4 so much. I'm hoping we'll be able to interact more with demons/shadows in this. In P4, shadows just seemed to be there for you to beat up so you can move on with the dungeon, in this game I'd like to see the characters be able to interact more with them besides just being an enemy in a dungeon.

Maybe if they replaced the current shadows with demons (who would still be shadows). Because the current shadows aren't very interesting.

I would prefer if they made the shadows more interesting in their own right. P1, 2, and SMT do the demon thing already.

On the topic, what are the chances that they lose the turn based combat? I mean so many JRPGs are doing it, though Atlus doesn't in general with most of its titles.

Hey Arsenic. Is this your image? If so, what font does the "Persona5" text use? I've been wondering that for the past day. I really like the font.

It's Helvetica so I'm told, but I don't have it, so I used Arial for the 1863. But squeezed it down to be more narrow since Helvetica is skinnier than Arial. I only put in 1863

A more dynamic style of combat like FFXIII's could potentially be cool. Changing Personas on the fly akin to shifting Paradigms and such.

I think it's a metaphore for a slave to the system. Chair represents a correct place to sit, your seat in the society. Chains are expecation, peer presure, normality that ensnares everyone. That's why they are not tying the chair down but merely serve as a reminder.

You can move the chair anywhere. You are emancipated but at the same time you are rebel and an outcast. The choice is yours.

Or something like that.

God, no (while I can at least see why some people enjoyed combat in FFXIII for what it was, in spite of hating it personally, I would hate to see P5 incorporate anything like it).

The Shin Megami Tensei games in general have always preferred regular turn based combat, so I wouldn't say chances are high.

Although as a spinoff, I wouldn't mind a ARPG Persona game.

I feel similarly actually. I've never been a fan of turn based combat in anything (though I love Persona despite its reliance on it) and a part of me would really love all the elements of Persona mixed with ARPG or Action/Adventure mechanics. I know tons of people would rage over a change like that - and I totally understand and respect that position - but I've always preferred less obfuscation in my gameplay, regardless of genre.

About how I feel. Think I'd be disappointed if they stopped doing turn based. It could be interesting though, and there does seem to be a jrpg trend that direction.

How about a Persona where you play the teachers! :P That would be interesting. I wonder if they will keep social links. That's pretty much a Persona staple.

After seeing how well Catherine turned out, I feel like it would be a shame if Hashino is stuck hashing out games with the exact same formula for the rest of his career.

If he wants to play around with ideas that different he could just work on spinoffs or other series like he did with Catherine.
