Nvidia Shield Thread

Judging by the pictures on nVidia's site, their Black Friday deal pretty much looks like it'll be:

nVidia Shield console + carrying case ($39.99 value) + Batman Arkham Origins ($37.49 value) for likely the standard $299 price. Obviously it's all speculation on my part, but the picture clearly has batman, clearly has a case, and the console.

I'd guess this would be a pretty reasonable deal for folks shopping for a shield. I am anxiously awaiting to see what Amazon does, but I have a feeling it'll likely be the same package. Amazon have moved their deal from the 26th to 12:01am on the 29th, which is after the 9pm 28th deal goes live on nVidia's own site, so maybe nVidia asked Amazon to push the deal as to not make theirs seem like a leftover.

really wonder what the Amazon deal will be.
Toto has been pushing this to me so much... that I'm kinda interested too

(but I use an AMD card on my PC... Radeon 5830... will the streaming still work for me)?

Yes and no, I think you can only play games in Windowed mode and you have to use Splashtop, cant use the nVidia default app, Splashtop is better anyways.
 
Just an update, Newegg's deal was the same as Nvidia has on their site, so I'm thinking Amazon's will also be the same.

I just purchased it, came out to 175 with a gift card I was saving. Looking forward to tinkering with this!

Shield gaming is android gaming. I don't rate mobile gaming very highly (even iOS gaming) but there are indeed some good stuff. The Rayman games play well on the shield after two minutes gesture mapping. I recommend them. Aside from emulators and the play store, there are other good games than can run natively on the shield, like all id games up to Doom 3 (!).
 
Saw SHIELD stations at Game Stop and Fry's Electronics. A lot of kids seem interested in the device. One was trying to get his dad to buy it "It has Sonic 4!".

I thought you were talking about the stream's framerate. I can't test properly at the moment because I had to move my computer around the house but I did test Tomb Raider and I was still able to pull out 70+ fps even with tressfx so no, Splashtop doesn't affect performance for me.
 
I haven't bought an Nvidia Shield, but I do have a tablet and have been using Splashtop.

My router apparently isn't very good. And occasionally disconnects from my desktop computer when I'm trying to use it for gaming.

Would it be worth investing into a ASUS RT-AC68U for desktop and gaming streaming? Or would it be too powerful and too much money for my needs?

I am hoping to both stream higher definition games to my tablet, and put all of game games on a NAS device. Accessing both via wifi might be very demanding, and this device seems to have the best data rates I've found on the consumer market.

Again, I want to use it both for NAS and PC game streaming. Would this be too much? Would it be enough? I'm not against investing $220 in a very good router. Especially as I intend to make use and keep using this in the future. I really enjoy streaming, but I would like to eliminate lag and disconnects entirely, if possible.
 
On the topic of native Shield games I want to recommend Ittle Dew. Is a nice little Zelda type game that has native controller support which is not compromised since it was first an Ouya game so its designed for controller firsts.

patiently waiting for delivery. i should've gotten the carbon fiber "shield" with my order, but it was total impulse.

can not wait to give this a try. with the free case from brack friday bunduru, this is going to be the first time in my adult life i bring a portable gaming device outside my home.

anyone happen to know if a 802.11 "ac" router is going to outperform my Cisco E4200 which is a dual band 802.11n? I'm hardwired in on my computer side, and just want to make sure streaming works nicely. I'm set for 450mbps on 5ghz, but I'm seeing claims of 1.6gbps on ac routers. would the shield notice the difference? planning on just reserving the entire 5ghz channel for shield.

As far as I know, the Shield only has a 802.11n module, so no ac yet.

I have a 570, so no native streaming for me. Maybe slashtop does uses the dedicated nvidia's encoder when available.
 
I don't think they've said what their plans are after the beta.

The email I got said people close to their northern California servers can try it, but I've seen some people in Florida saying its working.

According to a moderator on the Nvidia forums:
The requirement of location is just to set the performance expectation, as anyone outside of that area will likely see performance issues as we do this public test.

If you have a Shield its worth a try just to see how well it works for you.

Man, I was happy with the purchase before but now I'm even more excited, can't wait till it gets here tomorrow.

Hopefully I can get it to work.
 
I tried out the GRID streaming (I'm in Texas), and it works well enough. I tried a bit of Street Fighter X Tekken, Witcher 2, and Darksiders 2. Control Lag is evident on SFxT, obviously, but still playable if you can adjust to it. Compression artifacts kill the Witcher 2 for me on dark scenes, and Darksiders 2 looks and runs fine. Compression is also noticeable, but the game started on a snowy scene, and is not that visible on bright scenes.

Overall, it works ok. I've only briefly dabble in stuff like Onlive, so I can't really compare the two. For me, it's mostly a novelty, and I'll stick to streaming off of my own PC.
 
I don't suppose it would be okay for me to make a thread about my router and NAS question? It's probably partially my fault for writing too much text in the TechSupport thread.

But I'd really like to be able to make a decision soon. And I wonder if anyone's going to get back to me about my question here on NeoGAF without me making a thread specifically for it.
 
Yes, more info on this grid thing please. I've never even heard of it.

Also .. just got my Shield today. WOW! This thing is built so solid and the d-pad feels amazing. I was expecting "mediocre" to "good" at best in the d-pad department.

It rivals the damn sega saturn d-pad which to date is my favorite d-pad I've ever touched. Hours of classic gaming are about to happen on this thing. Gorgeous piece of hardware.

The silver "shield" on the front is ok, but they're going to fleece me out of another $20 for the faux carbon fibre one. After seeing the build quality of the device itself, it inspires some confidence that the accessories are going to be up to par.

Oh, case is really nice too. I am so sad that people aren't more interested in this thing!! I mean with all the kickstarter madness for things like Dingoo and GCZ-Zero I just don't understand how this isn't held in higher reguard.

Zero regrets thus far. I'm part of the club boys! :)
 
I've been using the Shield for almost a month now and it's been mostly positive. It disconnects for some reasons but my 2004-router will soon be replaced.

GRID gaming doesn't really interest me and Android games are just a distraction but PC streaming is really fun for my type of gaming.

I haven't tried the update yet, hopefully the wifi connection will be more robust.
 
Added a Shield to my wife's Amazon wishlist, let's see if it pans out. I'll mostly use it when we move back to Australia next year, since that's where my GTX690 lives.

But to answer your questions, there is a limited selection(more to come) of free games. These are free only during the beta, they have not announced pricing information for after the beta yet.

I actually got to try their grid service back during PAX but that was on a controlled environment so testing it on my own device will be interesting.
 
Well this sucks. I was charging my shield and I setup wifi and got settled in to try out the GRID stuff, and my shield just randomly shut off .. like the screen went blank.

So I tried doing a hard reset .. nothing.

Tried plugging it in again to see if it maybe was a battery issue .. nothing.

Got it to turn on a brief second while the boot screen loaded followed by a flash of a charging battery indicator .. followed by nothing.

I think I got a defective one. Bummer I really wanted to take this on the plane with me next week on my Vegas trip. Doubt nVidia is going to be able to get me another before Monday.

It was glorious for the few moments it worked!
 
Uhm. I know this isn't the best place to ask, but this thread seems to have a few Nvidia enthusiasts following it, so I figure you guys can either point me in the right direction or answer my question(s).


1. I currently have a 570 as mentioned earlier. If I had a second 570, it would not affect the potential of my computer to stream to a shield via Splashtop or some other work around right unless Slasphtop is made for it, and I'm assuming it wouldn't be.


2. Having zero to do with streaming, and just a general gaming performance question, what is a better purchase, a second 570 for around $150 or move on to a single 760 for I guess around $250?

3. Where is the best place to ask this? The "I want to build a pc" thread?

So my first store.nvidia.com purchase and my first store.nvidia.com customer service experience. Sounds like it's outsourced, but they're very good with english. Very friendly. I'm getting an advance replacement which sounds like a cross-shipped overnight replacement, so I should have my SHIELD for my upcoming Vegas vacation. WHOO!

I stream with 670's in SLI and I am able to do so over Splashtop to my tablet. I would assume 570's in SLI wouldn't affect this either.

570 SLI vs 760 = 760 will consume less power but perform around the same. I'd say go for it just because you'll save in the long run on the power consumption ... plus new warranty, newest design, etc etc etc.

The I want a build pc thread would likely have a lot of answers for you too.
 
I just got my Shield in today and it has really surpassed all expectations. I thought Vita/PS4 streaming was good, but this Shield streaming seems to be even better (except for audio hiccup moments that might occur every once in a while). Really great how the software just works so seamlessly with the PC. I thought there would be a lot more of a setup process.

Apparently I'm extra lucky that I always have a 360 controller plugged into the PC, because that fact enables a lot of games to stream that otherwise wouldn't (like Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed).

Can you elaborate on the audio stuff?

You have personally streamed vita/ps4? How exactly does it compare?

Maybe every few minutes, the audio of streamed games can cut out for about a quarter second (likely a signal hiccup)

PS4/Vita streaming is very good, but input lag appears to be about 100ms, and the video signal seems slightly more compressed. It's still great, but Shield seems to have even clearer video quality with less input lag.

Ironically, there are some native Android apps which seem to have much more input lag (the sort that are uncouth to talk about on GAF)
 
So I'm mad.

I updated to the latest GeForce Experience and Display Drivers, and not I get a black screen on my PC monitor while trying to stream. The Shield is displaying "Launching Steam..." indefinitely.

I have to restart my PC, otherwise I can't do anything.

I tried:

- Booting in Safe Mode
- Uninstalling Everything
- Deleting everything under C:\Nvidia
- Installing the latest Display Drivers
- Rebooting
- Installing Geforce Experience
- Rebooting Shield

I still have the same problem. I'm running on Windows 8.1

Anyone else has the same problem ?

Has NVIDIA ever said anything about the sales of this handheld so far? Are they generally a company who release sales figures on things such as their video cards? I'm curious how this is doing. Regardless if they are turning profit or whatever, I just want to know how many of these things are out in the wild.
 
So can someone go into detail about the Gamepad Mapper? I get that the idea is to add support to games without controller support built-in, but I was wondering how well it works. Mostly I'm wondering if things like the Chaos Rings, Final Fantasy games and Chronotrigger -- all of which use a virtual analog stick which appears wherever you touch the screen -- can be configured to use the sticks.
 
Since the Shield has HDMI out can I use a bluetooth controller for relaxed couch gaming on the big TV screen? And can I set this additional bluetooth controller as primary controller?
