Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

To the Plasma fans:

When people say "I am worried about IR", that doesn't necessarily mean that they are worried about burn in. Some people just really don't like IR, because even though it goes away, it will literally cause artifacts that last a couple minutes. That's really annoying to some people, including myself.

Since I primarily use my TV as basically a PC display, it's especially more worrisome. If I were to load up some art-rich gorgeous game, I don't want to be looking at Chrome tabs on the top and a start button on the bottom.

Just some subjective perspective for you.

IR on my 6 year old plasma is nonexistent. The only time I might see a shadow of a previous scene is when I'm turning the channel, on the black screen. But then the new picture refreshes it.

The 55" W900A was on sale at Best Buy today for $1700. Not sure if it will be the same price for Boxing day or Super Bowl deals.

Shows as $1999 online here for me, but I'd be interested in this as I'd like to get Amazon to pricematch my recent purchase if possible.

Same. Images are still pristine. IR is such a nonissue.

We're in the same boat. After reading all the plasma hype I bought a st50 last year and returned it shortly after. IR and dithering make for a terrible pc display.

I honestly don't understand how someone can claim image quality is king while apologizing for IR. Isn't the first part of image quality displaying the proper image?

Plasmas are terrible PC monitors so you're right to return it. Great for everything else.

why would anyone get a 1080p 50" tv for a PC monitor?

why would anyone get a 1080p 50" tv for a PC monitor?

Even though I've got a Dell Ultrasharp 30 inch monitor, there are absolutely times I'd like to have my PC hooked up to my much bigger TV... mostly for gaming on it. I don't think it's an unreasonable thing for people to want or do depending on how they use their PC.

It doesn't have to be your primary monitor to be a monitor. My computer is in my office, but I have HDMI and USB run under the house to the living room where my 50" Plasma sits. So I don't use it as a monitor primarily, but I can comfy couch some games on it.

I have my HTPC hooked up to my 50" plasma too, but I use it for games and for movies, which look perfect. If you're using it for PC work, which seems to be the issue stated, then yeah it's not a good idea.

My reason is mainly for space. I am going to use my tv for everything!

I've been using a 50" Panasonic VT25 as my only monitor for 3 years. I did break it in more than most though. I browse on it constantly, and have no issues.
Two friends with ST60s, both have the issue despite a 72 hour break in period and some fancy guy from AVS Forum's special calibration. Same with another friend on some Samsung Plasma, though I don't think he broke it in.

Given that consoles have certainly moved towards being more PC-esque, would this not hold true again?

I hate standard LCD panels as much as the rest of the Plasma folk, but there's a lot out there in terms of new technology that actually give superior motion resolution to plasma. Strobing backlights, inserting black frames without interpolation, etc, that have helped deal with a lot of the native issues of LCD.

Sony's Motion Flow Impulse is a prime example of what I'm talking about.

The good news is that it has excellent motion clarity (similiar to LightBoost), and it retains the Sony color quality, with better-than-plasma video game motion on an LCD. It flickers like a 60Hz CRT, and add a very small amount of input lag (but less than interpolation).

Really though, I'm holding out until some TV's with proper inputs (Displayport) are out, so I can finally have a 120Hz TV. The Seiki 4K option is just a bit too 'meh' for me to bite on at the moment, despite it's ability to run at 120Hz/1080p.

I have decided I'm going to get the W900a, but I want to wait for the price to drop below $2000, it's on sale at futureshop currently for $2200. Is it likely to get any cheaper?

I finally had enough of waiting and just splurged. Cant wait to start using it.

Isnt it 2k everywhere? I just bought one for 2k

I just decided on this against the F9000, (saves me about 2k lol)
It's about $2400 around where I am at. California to be exact.
I am also getting the 7.1 sound bar so I get $300 off that.

I'm in California as well. I'm serious, purchase from B&H. You'll have to wait about 2 weeks for delivery, but you will get 0 tax and free shipping. It's literally $2k to your doorstep.

Ahh, no US. In any case, I bought it from B&H. They usually offer no tax and no shipping. Maybe everything changes when you try to ship internationally, but maybe you can add it to your cart there and see what happens.
Just checked, shipping would be like $168, and with the Canadian dollars at about 94 cents all told it would come in at almost $2300 and that's before taxes.

There's a difference between using the Plasma as a PC Monitor and using a Plasma for PC Gaming.
Sure, but a TV as an HTPC does a lot more than game.

Seems like for the gaming crowd, it's really a subjective choice between improved motion resolution and no chance of IR with Motionflow Impulse or superior colors with Plasma.

Back when Plasma was the only choice on the block for motion resolution, it more than made up for some slight issues one might encounter. Now that it no longer does, it's really a toss up.

I've got a Toshiba 52XV540U from 2008. Great set, but after seeing this thread, I wanted more. I've spent weeks crawling through forum threads, TV firmware updates, calibration settings ect. Finally found this TVs quirk. He's the before (bot.) and after (top);

l1HXAmS.jpg

For those that have this model....

This TV has 4 preset image settings as well as a user-defined 'Preference' setting. If you change any of the preset settings, it'll turn your new changes into the 'Preference' setting. 2 of the presets have correct chroma (top), 2 of which don't (bottom). You'll need to select one of the good chroma presets, then calibrate the display to get a 'Preference' setting that has correct chroma. You can not set chroma yourself.

Calibration;

Select 'PC' Preset first

Contrast: 98
Backlight: 60-100 (your choice)
DynaLight: your choice
Brightness: 53
Color: 76
Tint: +19
Sharpness: 50
Dynamic Contrast: Low
Color Temp: Cool

The 'After' picture is supposed to be better?

It was just on sale yesterday at Best Buy (Canada) for $1700 so maybe it will hit that price again for Boxing day, but I'm not sure it will.

I finally got mine for a good deal from Craigslist and it had a Fry's warranty...so I just look at it as an open box item.

but before that there was a website I found that was selling it for $1,800..and supposedly they didn't have any hidden shipping fees. It wasn't "ALLTIMETVS" or what ever they are called, they have hidden shipping fees...even thought they say $1,800.

I can't remember that other site's name (saved link on laptop) but if you google a bit you should find it. I swear there was no tax as well.

I'll try to search right now. Supposedly some BestBuys might price match it, but don't try Magnolia they go by the book.

So, those who have a W650 (I got the 32" one): what picture settings do you guys use? Just out of curiosity, I'm pretty happy with my image quality. I'll post my setting if anyone wants too.

Hey GAF,

Can any of you all recommend me a really good projector for my HTPC and Console Gaming. Right now i have a dual Monitor Set up, Plasma for my Gaming and Movies and another Monitor on my desk for browsing and Work. And so far I love it but Im thinking i want to have that really big Movie theatre effect in my Man Cave and a Projector would finish my room off.

My concerns are that i play a lot of games, watch TV and Movies all on the same screen....day and night. I dont want issues with brightness or clarity. I want the picture to be as consistant regardless of time day Im playing my games.

Also how efficient is gaming on a projector....and how often do you have to change the bulb.

Any help you guys can offer would be great!

yeah we (at work) usually purchase from BH or abesofmaine.
I kinda wanted to just pick it up since I'm off work for the next 2-3 weeks lol.
I could use those best buy points for something else. I dont thin BH does the $300 off the 7.1 sound bar though

Yea probably not. In hindsight I wish I had bought from Best Buy. The wait time on the delivery was torturous (like 10 days), I would have probably preferred to pay the extra $200 just to have it earlier. Oh well, if you're strapped for cash and it's already at the top of your budget, it's definitely a nice savings (assuming you don't need the sound bar)

thats true.

I've been hurting with my sound system since I didn't want to run wires all over the place AND my receiver just died :(

Onkyo did good for a while.

Is this a fully light controlled room? If not I'll stop you right there... Also what's your projector budget looking like?

Just pulled the trigger on a Panny 50ST60. I would have liked a VT, but they don't come in a reasonable size for my use and are quite a bit more expensive. The ST will still be a significant upgrade over my current 42" PZ800U though.

I moved my consoles and tv to another, smaller room, but my Panny was way too big to enjoy. Had to find another tv. Bought the Sony KDL 42W655 ( It's called 42W653 in the UK for some reason, I live in the Netherlands myself ) and it's really unbelieveable what difference a few years make. This tv was way cheaper than my Panny 3 years ago and the quality is still awesome and for gaming it may even be on par with my Panasonic.

Has anyone found the correct settings for this TV when playing on XboxOne and PS4?

Same. Images are still pristine. IR is such a nonissue.

It very much isnt a non issue, i had to get a vt60 replaced due to persistent ir i couldnt shift despite hevy use of pixel flipper and scrolling bar im talking months of it. The ir was of watching sports for around 5 hours.

Every plasma is different, ive broke this vt60 in now over 100s of hours and making sure i dont have scoreboards etc displayed, i setup the wifi the other day and the keyboard panel left ir that took a few hours to shift. I dont dare think what 4 hours of a game hud would leave.

Just wanna give a shout out to the Panasonic TH-L50EM6A

Great TV, the colours are superb. Pikmin 3 and Super Mario 3D World are just breathtaking.

That being said, should i manually alter my settings? And to what? I played with them for a bit and found something that felt good to my eyes, but i don't know if its perfect.

I love how some people fail to comprehend there is variance in plasma display panels. Panasonic's in particular have been problematic since the move to the NeoPDP panels, some have virtually no IR at all, some have a bit of IR which fades upon normal use, and then some people get these really awful panels where you watch a channel for 10 minutes and the logo is there forever.

Panasonic's QA was either really bad or they were losing so much money that they might as well use every panel they manufactured even the ones which failed testing because it actually costed less to sell defective TVs than dispose of the panels. Either possibility is awful to consider, which is why Panasonic bled billions for a few years, neared bankruptcy, and finally packed it up and exited the market.

Meanwhile Samsung makes plasma display panels which rarely if ever get IR. It's too bad Samsung plasma TVs also have a reputation for buzzing loudly, I would have the kept the 64D7000 I had a few years back if it didn't sound like a fluorescent light when it was on as that TV didn't get IR even if I left it sitting at the Windows desktop overnight, which I did by accident during the first week of ownership.

There's a difference between using the Plasma as a PC Monitor and using a Plasma for PC Gaming.

Is there? I don't really think so, persistent Windows UI elements are not really any different from persistent game UI elements insofar as the plasma display panel is concerned. One persistent static image is the same as any other.

The worst IR I get on my VT60 is from FFXIV, which I play for 4-5 hours at a stretch. You can't play an MMO in 1 hour increments and expect to accomplish anything. So I beat the shit out of my panel and then I get the UI there and I have to Pixel Jogger it all night to make it fade. The reason plasma is a dead technology now is because unlike for example LCD you have to either change your life to accomodate your TV, or you just burn all kinds of shit into it.

I'm just going to keep burning shit into it until OLED comes along and I can jump ship.

Well said... I totally agree. I made the switch from Panasoinc to Sammy, and that was one of the reasons for doing so. The 50" ST in our bedroom still get IR but it fades after some use. It was no where as bad as the more expensive larger sets. The 65" GT and VT was replaced, because HUDs (sports and game) would stick around for a longer period of time that I was comfortable with. I ended up getting tired of exchanging rather large sets, so I jumped ship.

It's great isn't it?

I just set it to Game mode, adjusted the white balance to "Clear"? and then toned down the sharpening effect. Everything else was turned off in that mode and it looks fine to me. I left the PS4 settings on Auto and the TV and PS4 have worked it all out themselves even the chroma 4:4:4 is set correctly. Lovely.

I haven't played FFXIV yet, but I imagine there is probably at least some loading screens/transitions. Having a desktop on the screen is much different. If you don't have the taskbar (if using Windows) set to be minimized or hidden, you are going to have IR and if left too long burn in since that is static. Same thing with if you leave the desktop up full of icons. The top bar of Mac OSX will cause IR/burn in. If a browser windows is up, most of that interface will cause IR/burn in that never changes. Even most TV channel's have transparent logos that still allow a little bit of a change in the phosphors as well as commercials. Most games aren't 100% static with HUD or menu's unless you actually press start and leave the menu there for hours without turning off your TV.

Also OLED has burn in and other issues lol.
