Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

The Uncharted series is massively overrated. The production values and story are AAA, but the fighting endless waves of baddies and gunplay just doesn't work in a game that should focus more on exploration and stealthier more impactful combat. Naughty Dog seems to be going in the right direction though as The Last of Us was phenomenal.

Tearaway is thoroughly ugly. Nothing about that art style is appealing to me at all.

I didn't think this would be a controversial opinion, but so many people are sharing screenshots of it in the portable screenshot thread, so it must be well-received visually. I don't understand it.

Flame Shield Up!

Dragon Age 2 was better than Dragon Age 1 in almost every way. The story was far less hackneyed, the gameplay was superior in every way, and the characters. Oh man the characters. Just Varrick alone beats out all of the characters from DA1, and then there's Isabella and Anders... Just fantastic.

This is an opinion that has nearly gotten me killed in the past. =(

3DS library is really awful for an adult gamer in this day and age, but people seem so happy with it. Terrible selection of games in comparison to what the Vita has.

There's like OOT and maybe 3DLand, Mario Kart. Pretty much everything is targeting children or people into Japanese games.

Sure, exclusives, I get it. But are people really playing indies on home consoles instead of big budget titles? Nah.

I think the Halo series is pretty terrible.
I also think Xbox has the worst exclusives.

I own a 360 and X1.
Yes, i prefer the Playstation brand.

PC gaming = Handheld gaming >>>>>>>>>>> Home console gaming.

Naughty Dog never released a single game worth playing last gen.

Bioshock was a mediocre serie of games.

Graphic whores mentality is hurting the video game industry since the start of last gen.

It's ridiculous and absurd that the Xbox One and PS4 have been selling like they are - they're not worth the price even slightly, and the fact that machines that are basically slightly improved versions of their predecessors can sell like that paints a bleak picture of our industry. Especially when the Wii U continues to fail to sell when it is, by far, the most "next gen" in terms of actually bothering to do something different.

Bethesda games get way too much praise. When they're not completely broken by glitches, they're only good games at best. Skyrim was a perfect example of a game hindered by miles of wasted potential, and even more miles of bad game design.

Sakurai should take a break from the Smash Bros. series and the games should be handed off to a different creative director, ideally someone with more experience in crafting a fighting game. He has laid a fantastic groundwork, but I find it hard to believe that he has the mentality or experience to build it upwards from the peak he struck in Melee.

- MOBAs are all garbage
- Assassins Creed Revelations is the best AC game
- Team Fortress 2 was better in 2007, it's awful now
- Rome 2 is a good game
- GTAIV is the best GTA
- Super Mario World just isn't that great
- Fallout New Vegas is a horrible, horrible fucking video game
- Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is simultaneously one of the best games and one of the worst games ever made
- Valve hasn't made a good game in six years

The PSP thumbstick was the best handheld thumbstick. The Vita OS is the best console OS I've ever used(Hell I think it's better than Android).

Mario needs to stop being remade eternally for at least 5 years, same for call of duty.

I already said it once and it's fresh on my mind, so I'll say it again.

Metroid Fusion is the worst 2D Metroid game besides the original. It's probably the most boring Metroid game to replay besides Hunters and Other M, because every five seconds Adam forces you to wait in a data room and skip his text, or Samus goes on one of those elevators and has a poorly-written inner monologue. The final boss fight is awful and is a ripoff of Super Metroid's with none of the storytelling that made the Mother Brain fight matter. The story reads like a Metroid fanfic, with Samus glorifying this new character we've never seen and coincidentally meeting the Zebes animals that escaped at the end of Super Metroid. There's a lot of tedious "go here and do this" plotting that makes you feel like Adam's janitor, a far cry from the explorer of other Metroid games. There are some really good boss fights (BOX, Nightmare, Yakuza, Serris), but the level design has none of the mystery and discovery Metroid 2, Super Metroid, and Zero Mission had, so you feel bored between said boss fights. The changes to the Morph Ball bombs and wall jumping felt like a "fuck you" to people who experimented with those abilities in Super Metroid. The Fusion Suit is cool-looking until you get the yellow upgrade, at which point you vomit at the horrible clown-suit.

*Deep breath*

I dunno, this might be a popular opinion, but I replayed Fusion recently and it really doesn't feel as good as the other 2D Metroids. And then I go online and everybody wants a sequel to this insipid storyline because apparently it's just sooooo interesting having Samus fight the Weyland-Yutani Corp-I mean, the Galactic Federation while having five minute conversations with her computer.

If we ever get another Metroid, I want it to be somewhere remote. I don't want it on a fucking space station or military base or whatever. Leave the Galactic Federation alone and explore the wilderness.

I wish this weren't considered a controversial opinion.

I find the vast majority of indie games, even ones that people seem to like a lot like Limbo to be incredibly boring.

My first game console was a N64 but I still hate Nintendo for acting like their gimmicks are actual innovation.

I think that the Xbox One DRM that got killed should come back.

As a result of the last one above being retracted, I think Sony killed any chances they or MS stood against Steambox when they pushed not having those policies as a plus for them.

I think people who bitch about $500 are only doing it to bitch. People could get a high end Android tablet for $400 but the vast majority of people still only get $500 iPads.

I like Windows 8 and Metro UI.

Edit: a couple more:

Valve sucks at FPS's. Half Life is overrated, gunplay sucks and the story is OK but not great. TF2 is one of the most tedious and boring games I've ever played. Portal is fun because of the story and the puzzles. Left 4 Dead I've never gotten too but short play sessions solo show that the only redeeming quality would be a sense of teamwork and working together.

Steam is very in your face with DRM, and doesn't even work properly at times with offline mode, was much worse up until a couple months ago.

People who bitch about games that require uPlay or some other crap that requires an internet connection at startup but then go ahead and praise Steam even though Steam is only slightly better than uPlay are hypocrites.

Nintendo fanboys are by far some of the worst fanboys in the industry, and Pokemon and Mario games are more repetitive than CoD and Pokemon has one of the worst grinds in any game.

I've got a few.

-Xbox One should have omitted the Bluray drive and truly gone all digital download. They then would not have had to implement the maligned "always on" DRM policy. In the end, their messaging would have been much more clear and they could highlight the advantages much better than they did.

-Sony should have kept a bare-bones version of online play free. No parties, voice chat, etc. just play. I think they've built PS+ up to the point that its worth the price of admission based on the instant games collection. This would also give them a big leg up on Microsoft in terms of *free features (someone fro Sony needs to get on ads that detail the Xbox Live paywall).

-Nintendo needs to have an American executive from outside their company to reimagine their brand and products. Namely, someone from Apple.

-Nintendo should consider making Wii its own brand of console along side a more "hardcore" device. I believe Nintendo got lucky with the Wii in the United States. In the realm of 3D gaming consoles outside of the Wii, Nintendo has had middling success compared to its peers. I believe Nintendo can salvage the Wii brand by releasing a Wii2 that is more of an evolution of the original Wii than the WiiU is. They can also salvage their "hardcore" audience by finally making a console that meets performance parity with Playstation and Xbox.

TLOU has a very cliched story line. Zombies have taken over the world, little girl has only cure, escort little girl across country.

What makes it good is the characters, not the story which was meh at best.

I agree with all of these.

2D Mario is better than 3D Mario.

giphy.gif

GTA fucked up the sandbox genre.

Now sandbox means a 'free' world where you can go everywhere and do things that do not affect the world at all. (Basically the map screen of old JRPGs)
Story is told trough linear missions which are heavily scripted.

Mass Effect 3 is a great game.
Equally as good as ME2.
The ending satisfied me and the gameplay was even better than ME2.

Nintendo fans in general are pretty awful, but the NeoGAF bunch on the whole are much better.
Sony fans are the worst on this forum.

Knack is worse than Sonic 06
The ATB battle system literally ruins every game Square used it in (Chrono Trigger managed to be good despite it, but that's the only exception.)
FF Tactics is boring, there are far better SRPGS in the form of Shining Force, Disgaea and FE.
When people suggest a Nintendo Homeconsole/Handheld hybrid I get unreasonably angry at the stupidity of the Idea.
MGS 5 looks really bad, I'll probably still get it but I don't think it's going to be a good game.
Gamecube is the best home console of all time, followed by the Dreamcast and PS3.

(All this is just in my opinion but was effort to clarify that for every statement)

I agree. I've been borderline murdered for saying this before.

----------------------------------------------

Mine are:

- Tetris is the single most boring game ever, and the music makes me want to fall asleep.

- Breath Of Fire 1-5 is better than FF 1-5.

- Golf is the best video game sport.

- Final Fantasy X is better than VII

Shenmue III handled by the right hands, developed for the right console with the right fanbase, in the right time and with the right marketing, would succeed financially unlike popular opinions.

Alex Kidd in Miracle World on SMS, was a better game than Super Mario Bros. on NES.

GTA games should transform into ones where the quests would be about being kind and helpful, instead of freely killing people in a vain circle.

All Super Mario games, starting from SM64 and then, are not as they should be.

All Sonic games, starting from Sonic Adventure and then, are not as they should be.

Dreamcast is the best console of all time.

The best Pro Evolution Soccer game was the PES4.

Sims 2 is better than Sims 3 (and I haven't played Sims 1, yet...)

SAMMY has devastated the old good SEGA (but its marketing remains as bad as ever...)

I think the Mass Effect series is kinda mediocre.

Bioshock Infinite was like a 5/10 at best for me.

TLoU is one of the most overrated things I've ever seen in my life.

Also I fucking hated Metroid Prime. When I finished it I just kinda stared at the screen for 2 minutes and then asked myself "how the hell did this game get so much praise?" The combat was boring, puzzles are super brain dead/game is constantly unable to find a way to naturally guide you and good god that weird fetch quest thing at the end that was absolutely not needed at all.

Been along time and I have a few new ones.

It was a smart move by Capcom to cancel ALL Rock titles.

Street Fighter IV has been pushed for far to long. Adding Poison, Hugo and the others does not change this for me.

Capcom is still a very good studio with some wonderful teams.

Dragon's Dogma was my biggest disappointment ever. Havong Itsuno make DMC 3/4 only to make that boring trash broke my heart.

Mass Effect 2 is the best game in the franchise. 3 > 1 also.

Final Fantasy XIV ARR - story and characters are nearly as bad as XIII's and the voice acting is far worse.

Fang is the best FF female period.

Persona 3 Port is its best version and its better then P4.

Wind Waker is boring and the worst Zelda aside from SS.

Vaan across the three games becomes the most developed and one of the bedt FF leads ever.

Tomb Raider Reboot is GOTY.

Yep
2d Mario > 3d Mario >>>>>(...)>>>>> that weird shit they are doing with 3dland and 3dworld.

I don't hate 3D Land, but part of Mario's original charm was the simplicity. You only had one dimension to travel in, which made it easier to kill bad guys, and hit certain jumps. Now is just too messy. IMO.

Here's another couple:

-Dead or Alive is the best fighting game series
-Street Fighter is not fun, or good
(The above two make fighting game fans either rage or die laughing)

-Mass Effect 2 was worse than 3, and where the story and series started to go downhill

-We need more games that are MP-only like Titanfall, and SP games that don't include tacked-on MP. Spend all your resources on what you do best. A couple extra levels are worth losing crappy MP that will have a dead community in weeks.`

-Dragon's Dogma had some good ideas but was dragged down by the downright awfulness of everything else. It is a 6/10 game, at best.

-If Xbox One could have turned out like Steam, it's a shame they 180'd on everything before it even started. And as a consumer, I would have liked to see the competing philosophies in action before buying a new console. If it failed, so be it.

-I want new exclusive IPs for new generations. I have no excitement for Uncharted and only a little for InFamous. Meanwhile, I am fascinated by The Order and Deep Down.

I don't think any of those are unpopular opinions at all. I know I agree with all of them. Thing about the XB1 was no-one was willing to trust that it would have worked out like Steam.

FFVII isn't all that great. I used to adore that game but it is just kinda eh now. Not even nostalgia can fully redeem it for me. X and XII are far superior in every possible way.

I thought Mario 64 was awful and unfocused, even when it was new.

GTAV is absolute trash and one of the few games of the entire generation I've regretted buying. San Andreas is still the king.

Oh god... this thread delivers.

I vomited a little

Here's mine:

- Metroid Fusion is the best 2D Metroid
- Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions is the best SM game of all time

As far as XBONE goes, I wish it kept its original path barring a deal with Gamefly for rentals somehow now there's little to no reason to get one now, if ever.

Cutscenes, and highly scripted linear games do harm to storytelling in videogames. Games are not movies and a game studio shouldn't focus on the above when it comes to telling a story. The best form of storytelling is the method that From use in the Souls franchise.

Mass Effect 1 is a technical turd and every change made between 1 and 2 was a massive improvement.

Drew Karpyshyn was just as big a hack as Mac Walters, but his awfulness was hidden by the work of others earlier in his career.

Agreed.
I forced myself to finish ME so I could play ME2 AND ME3.
My sister took months to play ME, wanted to give up but I kept insisting it gets better.
"The first 10 minutes of ME2 is better than the entire first game"

:) I thought the first game was by far the best. Interesting story, and the Citadel was never better. The second game was awful, imo. Just a holding pattern. After the first, you wanted to get on with the story. Instead, seemingly to drag the story out to a fucking trilogy (and that should be another - why does everything have to be a fucking trilogy, yawn) they introduced the Collectors. Pointless.

Technically, yes the second game was far better than the first, but in terms of narrative and story telling, it was awful. The Collector's were nothing but a forced way to stretch the story out. You don't go through the first game / story then introduce a completely new villain. They may have been able to salvage it if the second game ended on a cliff hanger, but it didn't. The Earth needed to be in peril, like proper peril, with the extermination happening.

I liked the third game more, but again, where was the peril? You're just flying around collecting [oh the irony!] war assets. Is it even possible to fail? There's seemingly no time limit, you can just keep going.

I don't know if anyone remembers Mercenary 2: Damocles, but a Mass Effect with that kind of time limit, where your actions REALLY DO MATTER and where you can balls the game up and be forced to go all the way back to the start and try a new approach - that would have been something.

Honestly, I liked ME2 better because it marginalized the Reaper plot. They weren't effective villains to me after Sovereign spilled his guts about everything except their motive and just about every other antagonist in the games displayed more personality than Sovereign, Saren, and Harbinger combined.
